Use of imaging and mass spectrometry-based capabilities to describe microbiome interactions (Q4 Performance Metric Report, 2021)

The LLNL “Microbes Persist” Soil Microbiome Scientific Focus Area (SFA) seeks to determine how microbial soil ecophysiology, population dynamics, and microbe-mineral-organic matter interactions regulate the persistence of microbial residues and formation of soil carbon (C). In much of our research, we use imaging, mass spectrometry, and related methods to study plantmicrobe-mineral interactions, viral and microbial particles from soil, and the signatures plant and microbial necromass contribute as part of soil organic matter (SOM). Our project’s signature techniques include NanoSIMS-enabled approaches (to understand cell-cell and OM-mineral interactions at the single cell and even viral particle scale), radiocarbon (14C) analyses (to determine both the age and turnover time of soil organic matter), and a suite of soil chemical characterization techniques we describe below, and collectively refer to as ‘Multi- dimensional SOM-mineral characterization’ (SEM, TEM, STXM, NEXAFS, NMR, FTICR-MS, LC-MS). In this report, we focus on how imaging, NMR, beamline and mass spectrometry approaches can deepen our understanding of soil microbiomes and their engagement with the soil matrix.

2021 Supercomputer Institute Outbrief [Slides]

An ideal early career candidate for the HPC division is one who has a bachelor’s degree in a related field and experience with concepts of high performance computing. Most programs do not provide a good background on the systems side of HPC in their undergraduate curricula. We are competing for the same candidates that large tech companies are interested in and recruiting into a field that isn’t on the radar of many undergrads.

Los Alamos Climatology 2021 Update

The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL or the Laboratory) operates a Meteorological Monitoring (Met) Program to support LANL emergency response, engineering designs, environmental compliance, environmental assessments, safety evaluations, weather forecasting, environmental monitoring, research programs, and environmental restoration. Weather data has been collected in Los Alamos since 1910. A 30-year averaging period is termed by the National Weather Service (NWS) as a climatic normal, and these statistics are updated every 10 years to represent the current climatic normal conditions. Previous climate statistics are provided in Bowen (1990) for the 1961–1990 averaging period and Dewart et al. (2017) for the 1981–2010 averaging period. No climate statistics were developed for the 1971-2000 averaging period. This report provides climate statistics for the current 30-year 1991–2020 averaging period.

Lawrence Graduate Research Scholar, Allegra Mayer, 2021 (Final Report)

Carbon storage in tropical forest soil depends on the balance between large C inputs from high rates of productivity, and high rates of soil C loss due to rapid decomposition rates. Disturbances to tropical forests, including severe hurricanes, could result in globally significant fluxes of C either to or from forest soils. Severe hurricane events are increasing in frequency in the tropics, yet the vulnerability of soil carbon to a frequent severe hurricane regime is unknown. By constraining a model with samples from before and after three major hurricanes within thirty years, this study examines the cycling of C between soil pools and with depth, under conditions marked by sudden organic matter pulses, rapid shifts in forest structure, and fast decomposition rates.

Model Year 2021 Fuel Economy Guide

The Fuel Economy Guide is published by the U.S. Department of Energy as an aid to consumers considering the purchase of a new vehicle. The Guide lists estimates of miles per gallon (mpg) for each vehicle available for the new model year. These estimates are provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in compliance with Federal Law. By using this Guide, consumers can estimate the average yearly fuel cost for any vehicle. The Guide is intended to help consumers compare the fuel economy of similarly sized cars, light duty trucks and special purpose vehicles.

2021 Microbial U (Summary Report)

The US nuclear industry is on the cusp of significant growth in the areas of advanced reactors, SMRs, and microreactors. The existing commercial nuclear reactor fleet is considering expanding the life of the reactor cores by slightly increasing enrichment of their fuel. The common thread is the demand for High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU). A technical challenge exists with a blend down of Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) from spent nuclear fuel (SNF) to meet the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the “Y12” specifications. U-236 impacts reactor performance and is not desired in fresh fuel cores. In order to meet tight specifications, U-236 must be diluted by addition of fresh HEU. Fresh HEU is highly sought after and not plentiful in the US. A solution to this issue lies in the application of a technology to selectively remove the U-236 with non-hazardous microorganisms, which will be evaluated in this project by experimentally separating different isotopes of uranium.

Floating Photovoltaic System Cost Benchmark: Q1 2021 Installations on Artificial Water Bodies

In this report, we conduct a bottom-up analysis of the installed costs for FPV systems deployed on artificial water bodies under average site conditions (wind load of about 40 m/s, snow load of 20 psf, water depth of 50 m, water level variation of 10 m, and swell height of 1 m). We estimate an installed system cost premium of $\$0.26$/WDC (25%) for 10-MWDC fixed-tilt FPV systems, compared with ground-mounted, fixed-tilt PV installed over bare ground. Higher structural costs related to the floats and anchoring system are the largest contributors to this premium. Currently, site investigation costs are also higher for FPV because of the additional effort needed to plan and design these more complex installations. Our preliminary sensitivity analysis shows that the installed cost of FPV systems is most sensitive to float costs, wind and snow loading, and module efficiency. FPV deployment is in an early stage, and additional experience, best practice development, and new configurations and technologies could help reduce the costs of FPV systems over time.
