Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Ultrafast Closure Valve Use Cases

The purpose of this report is to document several use cases of the Ultra-Fast Closure Valve System (UCVS) at the Joint Actinide Shock Physics Experimental Research (JASPER) facility. The goal is to clearly identify the use cases so that an explosive hazard classification may be assigned.

Development of Cast Valve Bodies For High Temperature Service

Gen 3 Concentrating Solar-Thermal Power (CSP) system components are required to operate at 750°C - 800°C to achieve the Sunshot target of 6 cents/kWh. Haynes ® 282 and IN ® 740H are preferred alloys for the construction of these components due to their high tensile and creep strengths for service at temperatures greater than 750°C. There is significant motivation to lower the cost of materials and components so that the capital costs can be minimized. One approach to reduce costs is to fabricate castings at the lowest possible cost. To obtain the lowest cost in castings, there is a significant need to maximize yields in castings by decreasing rejects due to casting defects and to minimize wastage in material lost in the gating systems. However, very little work has been performed to develop cast products using Haynes ® 282. Although preliminary work has established the feasibility of casting Haynes ® 282 using investment and sand casting, there are no commercial cast components available. In particular, there is significant interest in the development of casting design and process technology for the fabrication of components such as valve bodies using Haynes ® 282.

Equipment Qualification Report Environmental Qualification of GNB Absolyte Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) 1600 Ah100G33 Battery Rack Assembly (24590-QL-POA-EDB0-00001-11-00002_00A)

Greenberry Environmental Qualification Report 550001.001-35.0.5 provides basis for assignment of qualified life for: GNB Absolyte Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) 1600 Ah 100G33 Battery Rack Assembly in accordance with the requirements specified 24590-WTP-3PS-G000-T0015 (Rev 2) and Environmental Qualification Plan 550001.001-35.0.1 (Rev. 3). The equipment qualification basis represents the most conservative capability of the equipment. The analysis performed for the qualification is not less conservative than the bounding environmental conditions detailed in contract documents issued to Greenberry in contract 24509-QL-POA-EDB0-00001 Rev.0. The qualified life of 10 years has been established based upon an end-condition objective of the equipment condition indicators that correlate to the ability of equipment to perform its safety function. The VRLA Battery Cell Assembly was aged by 10 years (minimum) in accordance with conditions specified by Bechtel Equipment Qualification Datasheet 24590-LAW-EUQ-UPE 00003 Rev. 3 and the process conditions specified by the Instrument Data Sheet 24590-LAW EUD-UPE-00009 Rev. 2. Greenberry Industrial has contracted with GNB Industrial Battery Co located at 4115 S Zero St, Fort Smith, AR 72908 to perform age conditioning, monitoring, and capacity testing in accordance with Environmental Qualification Plan 550001.001-35.0.1 Rev. 1. The required process at the stated conditions set by the parameters established by the plan were completed satisfactorily. The details of the of the test process observed by Greenberry is detailed in the attached Seismic Test Log 550001.001-7.0.3, including examples of the objective evidence collected during the qualification process.

High-Temperature Freeze & Leak-Resistant Advanced Molten Salt Valve (Final Project Report)

The overall goal of this investigation was to develop an innovative high-temperature chloride molten salt flow control valve capable of operation up to 750 °C. The team developed an integrated active and passive thermal management system to ensure robust design for freeze-thaw cycles, with either a bellows-sealed configuration, a high-temperature stuffing box, or combination of the two. The STM system is unique in the industry.

Sensitive low-pressure relief valve has positive seating against leakage

A pilot-operated relief valve which provides positive seating against leakage in cryogenic systems is described. The principal advantage is that the pilot poppet is unaffected by variations in control pressures in the pilot cavity, and results in a more accurate sensing of inlet pressure conditions.

Improved poppet valve provides positive damageproof seal

Soft-seat poppet valve provides positive closure against fluid without damage to the seating surface on repeated cycling. It incorporates two compressible soft rings and a retaining ring of hard metal. Sealing is effected when the poppet seat is forced into intimate contact with a mating surface on one of the soft rings.

Pneumatic shutoff and time-delay valve operates at controlled rate

Shutoff and time delay valve, which incorporates a metering spool that moves at constant velocity under pneumatic pressure and spring compression, increases fluid-flow area at a uniform rate. Diaphragm areas, control cavity volume, and bleed-orifice size may be varied to give any desired combination of time delay and spool travel time.

Flow ring valve is simple, quick-acting

Two porting rings, one within the other, control gas or liquid flow by using seal buttons as the sliding valve closers. Multiporting within the ring allows close control of the flow by the slight rotation of the outer porting ring.

Valve seat pores sealed with thermosetting monomer

Hard anodic coating provides a smooth wear resistant value seating surface on a cast aluminum alloy valve body. Vacuum impregnation with a thermosetting monomer, diallyl phthalate, seals the pores on the coating to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Spool valve cycles at controlled frequency

Spool valve accurately controls the cycle of a pneumatically-actuated system over long periods. Regulation of pressure from the external source, positioning of the adjusting plugs, and magnet selection, together afford wide variation in cyclic timing and speed of closure in either direction.

Study of vortex valve for medium temperature solid propellants

Fluid state vortex valve secondary injection control system shows considerable promise for future application to solid propellant rocket engine thrust vector control. The single axis injection system tested would be capable of providing secondary injection thrust vector control using 2000 deg F gas.
