Tuning the hydrogenation of CO 2 to CH 4 over mechano-chemically prepared palladium supported on ceria

CO 2 methanation reactivity, reaction mechanism, and surface structure were investigated on a mechanochemically prepared Pd/CeO 2 catalyst (PdAcCeO 2 -M), where an oxidative pretreatment (-o) increased methane yield by a factor of two compared to a reductive pretreatment (-h). Methanation rates were maintained for over 48 h and further increased upon oxidative regeneration treatments. The surface species of both PdAcCeO 2 -M-o and PdAcCeO 2 -M-h were explored via in situ CO 2 and CO hydrogenation DRIFTS, where CO hydrogenation effectively models the dissociative CO 2 mechanism (CO 2 → CO → CH 4 ). PdAcCeO 2 -M-o yielded distinct Pd-CO adsorption and the absence of monodentate carbonate at ~ 1400 cm -1 , while AP-XPS showed that PdAcCeO 2 -M-o yielded a unique Pd δ+ contribution at 335.9 eV. By gaining insights from various in situ spectroscopic techniques, and by breaking the CO 2 hydrogenation mechanism into piecewise steps, a deeper understanding of the direct CO 2 reduction towards methane and CO over mechanochemically prepared Pd/CeO 2 catalysts was obtained.

Tailoring olefin distribution via tuning rare earth metals in bifunctional Cu-RE/beta-zeolite catalysts for ethanol upgrading

Bioethanol to middle distillate technologies have offered a unique solution to produce renewable aviation fuel for decarbonizing the hard-to-electrify sectors. Here, we have developed the series of bimetallic Cu- and rare earth-containing (RE) Beta zeolite catalysts that yield high C 3+ alkene selectivity from ethanol upgrading (>80% selectivity at ~100% conversion, 623 K). The formation rates of butene isomers to C 5+ alkenes are linearly correlated with the strength of Lewis acidic RE identity, which follows the sequence of Yb 12 /Beta >Y 7 /Beta > Gd 12 /Beta > Ce 10 /Beta > La 12 /Beta. Rate measurements indicate that the RE selection plays the vital role in altering the rate of the key competitive reactions within the ethanol-to-alkenes reaction network, namely C 4 alcohol dehydration and C-C chain growth, which dictate alkene product distributions. Finally, these findings indicate a feasible and promising method for tailoring alkene product distributions from ethanol upgrading, which is of notable significance to the generation of renewable middle distillates.

Towards defect engineering in hexagonal MoS 2 nanosheets for tuning hydrogen evolution and nitrogen reduction reactions

Combined computational and experimental approaches were used to evaluate defective 2H-MoS 2 nanosheets for their activity and selectivity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). Density functional theory calculations were used to understand the relationship between HER and NRR activity on the ideal basal MoS 2 plane, seven grain-boundaries, ten single-/few-atom vacancies and anti-sites, and zigzag and armchair edge sites. The results confirm that 2H-MoS 2 should contain several defects with high activity for HER: armchair and zigzag edges, VS vacancy, MoS 2 anti-site, and S-S and Mo-Mo grain boundaries. Considering Gibbs free energy change for all the steps in the NRR mechanism and kinetic barriers for a key NRR step, we have found that activation of perspective NRR selective sites in 2H-MoS 2 , namely V MoS6 and clusters of S-vacancies, would require large overpotential, conditions at which HER dominates. The DFT conclusions are supported by the electrochemical studies of NRR activity and selectivity under aqueous conditions, which show an increase in NRR activity but a decrease in Faradaic efficiency as applied cell potential becomes more negative. The results of this work therefore highlight the challenges in activating natural 2H-MoS 2 for NRR, which would require additional material engineering or reaction condition optimization as a way to suppress HER, decrease the NRR overpotential or preferentially both.

Tuning conformational structures of imidazolium ionenes with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquid solvents

In this report the structures and conformations of imidazolium ionenes solvated in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) ([C 2 mim + ][X - ]) are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. Four different ionenes poly(decylimidazolium) (PD 10 ), poly(tetraethyleneglycolimidazolium) (PE 10 ), alternating copolymer (P(ED) 5 ), and a block copolymer PE 5 D 5 are immersed in [C 2 mim + ][X - ], where [X - ] = thiocyanate [SCN - ], tetrafluoroborate [BF 4 - ], and trifluoromethanesulfonate [TfO - ]. The radius of gyration indicates that the ionene chains are more extended when immersed in [TfO - ] compared to [BF 4 - ] and [SCN - ], while the solvent accessible surface area shows that PE 10 is the most contracted ionene among all systems. The electrostatic interactions between the ionenes and the ILs are very consistent with the inherent electrostatic characteristics of the different anions, which can be quantified using the Ionic Polarity Index (IPI). The ionene configurations and dynamics strongly depend on the backbone functionality and architecture of the chain, due to the balance between the inter- and intra-molecular interactions in these systems.

Tuning the surface energy of fluorinated diamond-like carbon coatings via plasma immersion ion implantation plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition with 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane

Here, we demonstrate an environmentally friendly and scalable method to create fluorine-doped diamond-like carbon (F-DLC) coatings using plasma immersion ion implantation plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PIII-PECVD) with 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane. F-DLC films tend to have low wettability and good mechanical flexibility, which make them suitable for applications in biomedical devices and antibiofouling surfaces. We report on the effects of fluorine incorporation on the surface chemistry, surface energy, and morphology of these coatings, showing that our method is effective in increasing the fluorine content in the F-DLC up to 40%. We show that the addition of fluorine leads to a decrease in surface energy, which is consistent with a reduction in surface wettability.
