Workshop Summary: Bridging the Gap Between Atmospheric Science and Grid Integration

The need for dedicated, accurate, expertly curated weather data is increasingly important as the share of variable renewable energy increases on the power system. Projections for futures with very high (50+% annual energy) shares of variable generation require ongoing assessment of data requirements from industry stakeholders in their power system operation and planning contexts. In March 2024, NREL organized a workshop entitled "Bridging the Gap Between Atmospheric Science and Grid Integration Workshop", which brought atmospheric scientists and power system experts together to refine the requirements of atmospheric datasets for grid integration, and to describe a holistic approach to creating new and regularly updated national scale wind datasets for power system planning and operations. The results of this workshop are being used to inform the near-term development and a longer-term strategy for DOE to produce relevant wind resource datasets and inform wider use of wind/solar/load data sets in power system planning. This presentation provides an overview of a preworkshop survey, an assessment of current state of the art of national-scale datasets for wind resource assessment and grid integration, insights on appropriate uses of the WTK-LED, power system perspectives on data needs, as well as recommended next steps as discussed in the workshop and how these steps support longer-term strategies.

Integral Experiment Request 554: CED-2 Summary Report

This report summarizes the critical experiment design 2 (CED-2) or final design study for Integral Experiment Request 554 (IER-554). This experiment describes the effects and importance of adding a commercially available neutron absorber material to a known light-water low-enriched uranium assembly. The assembly in question is the Seven Percent Critical Experiments (7uPCX) at Sandia National Laboratories. The neutron absorber plates considered for the experiment are known as Boralcan and are made of boron carbide (B 4 C) particles embedded in 1100 aluminum alloy. The concentrations of B 4 C and 1100 aluminum were changed as well as the thickness and the positions of the plates, and the fuel rod configuration was adapted to ensure that the assembly would be critical in each case studied. A total of 6 critical configurations, each with a neutron absorber plate inserted, are described in this report. No results of high-quality integral experiments involving neutron absorbers made with B 4 C and 1100 aluminum plates are currently publicly available. Sensitivity to the neutron absorber plate material definition, isotopes, and cross sections of specific regions and configurations are also analyzed. As part of the final design of the experiment, a safe plate holder made of 3003 aluminum was designed. The study results indicate that these experiments are achievable with sufficiently low uncertainties and minimal modification to the assembly, and the CED-3 phase can start when funding allows.

Multiphysics Design Optimization and Additive Manufacturing of Nuclear Components (Final CRADA Report - Executive Summary)

Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC) actively participated in the advancement of the nuclear fuel and reactor design space and requested the help of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the creation of a new design tool set. This report details the creation of a collection of software tool sets that are linked together to collectively assist WEC design engineers in developing novel ideas outside the normal scope of traditional nuclear fuel and reactor design formulas. Specifically, Siemens HEEDS, a design space exploration and parametric optimization software, monitored and changed parameters in a collection of softwares to meet the team’s objective. The HEEDS parametric optimization method, SHERPA, was developed to control the Siemens NX CAD platform to adjust the native CAD of a hexahedral spacer grid. This new geometry can be used to execute a topological design optimization by the NX Topology software add-in. The resulting geometry is additively manufacturable. This topological optimization occurred twice—once on the spacer grid’s spring, and once on the dimple geometry. These new geometries were imported by Siemens’ STAR-CCM+, a multiphysics structural and fluid dynamic computational solver in which the spring geometry is deflected to match the rod insertion configuration. Along with the dimple geometry, this new deflected spring was used to complete a hydraulic assessment of a single-unit cell comprising one rod, one spring, and two dimples. The HEEDS SHERPA algorithm ranks the design based on the final mass of the unit cell and the hydraulic pressure drop performance. The ORNL team demonstrated the ability to use this software and provided engineering judgement to apply modern aerospace aerodynamic design. The effort has been focused on thinking outside the conventional design space and redesigning a spacer grid to perform beyond the WEC set objectives. Furthermore, the ORNL team also demonstrated that the HEEDS optimization routine can independently develop a design that meets the WEC design goals. Although these designs were at a low technology readiness level, their demonstration confirmed the team’s capability to create novel advanced nuclear concepts.

IMS Rapid Response 2024 Summary Report: A Machine Learning Potential for the Periodic Table

Stockpile stewardship and nuclear waste remediation are inherently chemically complex, involving practically the full diversity of the periodic table, but existing methods are too expensive or not functional for a large diversity of atom types. Overall, the field of machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) has advanced dramatically in 2024 with large high-accuracy datasets existing for bulk, surface, and organic chemical systems and new online leaderboards for diverse chemistry. To participate in, and bring LANL interests into this ecosystem, here, we have built upon existing technologies created by LANL to create a framework capable of creating machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) for over 90 atom types. Our results have created a massively diverse coordination complex training dataset more than 3 times the size of existing datasets, parallelized MLIP training over multiple GPUs, enabling the training of an MLIP spanning the periodic table at 20 times the speed of prior training on 32 GPUs. These advances are substantial towards creation on foundational MLIPs for LANL-specific application areas.

Summary Report on Ion Irradiation Study of Ceramic Coating on Suppressing FCCI

Advanced cladding is critical for advanced nuclear reactors with an enhanced performance in radiation tolerance and neutron transparency. Using advanced cladding will ensure the adequate thermal conductivity and mechanical stability of the cladding base material, corrosion resistance, high-temperature coolant compatibility of the cladding surface, and chemical stability in the cladding inner wall against fuel cladding chemical interaction (FCCI). An innovative cladding with a three-layer structure (i.e., a modified surface, a clad base material, and a modified inner wall) promises to meet all these requirements. Initial research and development (R&D) regarding this innovative cladding seek to demonstrate the effectiveness of a thin ceramic coating in suppressing FCCI under ion irradiation to high dose. This United States (U.S.) Department of Energy (DOE)–Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) project report summarizes the results of recent ion irradiation studies of diffusion-couple samples with details of an ion irradiation experiment, the characterization of the interface microstructure of cerium (Ce)/titanium nitride (TiN)/oxide-dispersion strengthened (ODS), Ce/TiN/iron (Fe), Ce/ODS, and Ce/Fe samples irradiated with 80 million electron-volts (MeV) of xenon (Xe) ions to 100 displacements per atom (dpa) at 500?C using the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS) facility at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). The results of the ODS-substrate sample are encouraging and demonstrate the effectiveness of a thin ceramic coating on FCCI mitigation under irradiation. The results from an Fe-substrate sample revealed a complex microstructure, and the root cause is discussed.
