Optical communication with semiconductor laser diodes

A 25 megabit/sec direct detection optical communication system that used Q=4 PPM signalling was constructed and its performance measured under laboratory conditions. The system used a single-mode AlGaAs laser diode transmitter and low noise silicon avalanche photodiode (APD) photodetector. Comparison of measured performance with the theoretical revealed that modeling the APD output as a Gaussian process under conditions of negligible background radiation and low (less than 10 to the -12 power A) APD bulk leakage currents leads to substantial underestimates of optimal APD gain to use and overestimates of system bit error probability. A procedure is given to numerically compute system performance which uses the more accurate Webb's Approximation of the exact Conradi distribution for the APD ouput signal that does not require excessive amounts of computer time (a few minutes of VAX 8600 CPU time per system operating point). Examples are given which illustrate the breakdown of the Gaussian approximation in assessing system performance. This system achieved a bit error probability of 10 to the -6 power at a received signal energy corresponding to an average of 60 absorbed photons/bit and optimal APD gain of 700.

Projection filters for modal parameter estimate for flexible structures

Single-mode projection filters are developed for eigensystem parameter estimates from both analytical results and test data. Explicit formulations of these projection filters are derived using the pseudoinverse matrices of the controllability and observability matrices in general use. A global minimum optimization algorithm is developed to update the filter parameters by using interval analysis method. Modal parameters can be attracted and updated in the global sense within a specific region by passing the experimental data through the projection filters. For illustration of this method, a numerical example is shown by using a one-dimensional global optimization algorithm to estimate model frequencies and dampings.

Influence of large deflection and transverse shear on random response of rectangular symmetric composite laminates to acoustic loads

Nonlinear equations of motion of symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates are derived accounting for von Karman strains. The effect of transverse shear is included in the formulation and the rotatory inertia effect is ignored. Using a single-mode Galerkin procedure the nonlinear modal equation is obtained. Direct equivalent linearization is employed. The response of acoustic excitation on moderately thick composite panels is studied. Further, the effects of transverse shear on large deflection vibration of laminates under random excitation are studied. Mean-square deflection and mean-square inplane stresses are obtained for some symmetric graphite-epoxy laminates. Using equilibrium equations and the continuity requirements, the mean-square transverse shear stresses are calculated. The results obtained will be useful in the sonic fatigue design of composite aircraft panels. The analysis is presented in detail for simply supported plate. The analogous equations for a clamped case are given in the appendix.

Microwave electrothermal thruster performance in helium gas

The microwave electrothermal thruster presented uses an internally tuned, single-mode cylindrical cavity applicator to focus and match microwave energy into an electrodeless, high pressure flowing gas discharge that is located within a quartz discharge chamber. Experimental measurements of microwave coupling efficiency, thruster energy efficiency, and specific impulse, are obtained for N and He discharges; the efficiency of microwave energy transfer to the discharge is found to be of the order of 95 percent. Higher temperature nozzle materials and more efficient discharge chambers will further enhance performance.

Effects of large deflection and transverse shear on response of rectangular symmetric composite laminates subjected to acoustic excitation

Nonlinear equations of motion of symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates are derived accounting for von Karman strains. The effect of transverse shear is included in the formulation. Using a single-mode Galerkin procedure, the nonlinear modal equation is obtained. The direct equivalent linearization method is employed for solution of this equation. The response to acoustic excitation of moderately thick composite panels is studied. Further, the effects of transverse shear on large deflection vibration of laminates under random excitation are studied. Mean-square deflections and mean-square inplane stresses are obtained for symmetric graphite-epoxy laminates. Using equilibrium equations and the continuity requirements, the mean-square transverse shear stresses are calculated. The results obtained will be useful in the sonic fatigue design of composite aircraft panels. The analysis is presented in detail for simply supported plates. The analogous equations for a clamped case are also obtained.

Coherent laser radar at 1.06 micron using Nd:YAG lasers

A coherent laser radar system operating at the 1.06 micron Nd:YAG laser wavelength has been built and operated. A laser-diode-pumped monolithic ring laser served as the master oscillator. A single flash-lamp-pumped zigzag slab amplified the oscillator output to a power of 2.3 kW. Single-mode optical fiber was used to collect and mix the return signal with the local-oscillator output. Signals from clouds at a range of 2.7 km and from atmospheric aerosols at a range of 600 m were detected.

A simplified derivation of stimulated emission by black holes

A black hole, when acting as a scatterer for quanta in a single mode of a massless scalar field, is known to convert any ingoing Gibbs state of that mode into an outgoing Gibbs state (with some other mean particle number). The paper presents a simple derivation for this property which may help to clarify what relation, if any, it bears to the microscopic structure of the black hole horizon.

Fiber-linked telescope arrays on the ground and in space

The use of single-mode optical fibers in telescope arrays, first proposed for a set of free-flying spacecraft, is developed and applied to more modest, shorter range projects. The basic advantage remains a considerable simplification in the control system; the main limitation is spectral range. Two proposals are described: a ground-based array of small optical telescopes supported on a radio dish, and a similar space array. The control system is almost the same in both cases, hence the ground-based array can be considered a test-bench for the space device.

Distributed feedback lasers

A ridge waveguide distributed feedback laser was developed in InGaAsP. These devices have demonstrated CW output powers over 7 mW with threshold currents as low as 60 mA at 25 C. Measurements of the frequency response of these devices show a 3 dB bandwidth of about 2 GHz, which may be limited by the mount. The best devices have a single mode spectra over the entire temperature range tested with a side mode suppression of about 20 dB in both CW and pulsed modes. The design of this device, including detailed modeling of the ridge guide structure, effective index calculations, and a discussion of the grating configuration are presented. Also, the fabrication of the devices is presented in some detail, especially the fabrication of and subsequent growth over the grating. In addition, a high frequency fiber pigtailed package was designed and tested, which is a suitable prototype for a commercial package.

Low-loss, high-isolation, fiber-optic isolator

A low-loss, high-isolation, fiber-optic isolator for use in single-mode fiber systems utilizes a Faraday rotator and two polarizers, one at each end angularly oriented from each other at the angle of rotation for isolation, and two aspheric lens connectors to couple optical fibers to the Faraday isolator to reduce forward loss to about 2.5 dB and improve isolation to greater than 70 dB.

Overview of advanced components for fiber optic systems

The basic operating principles and potential performance of several state-of-the-art fiber-optic devices are illustrated with diagrams and briefly characterized. Technologies examined include high-birefringence polarization-maintaining fibers and directional couplers, single-mode fiber polarizers and cut-off polarizers, optical-fiber modulators with radially poled piezoactive polymer (PVF2) jackets, and piezoelectric-squeezer polarization modulators. The need for improved manufacturing techniques to make such fiber-optic devices cost-competitive with their thin-film integrated-optics analogs is indicated.

Deformation of the core-mantle boundary induced by spherical-shell, compressible convection

Single-mode, mean-field equations, for spherical-shell convection are derived, with variable viscosity and compressibility included. Core-mantle boundary (CMB) topography produced by whole mantle convection is computed for various rheologies and different thermal boundary conditions at CMB. Results for long-wavelength undulations show the extreme sensitivity of these signatures to rheological and equation of state parameters. In order to obtain excess ellipticity of about 1 km, the activation energy and volume in the lower mantle should be low, and the temperatures at CMB should be around 4500 K, in accord with recent experimental findings.

A finite element large deflection random response analysis of beams and plates subjected to acoustic loading

A finite element formulation is presented for the analysis of beams and rectangular plates undergoing large deflections subjected to Gaussian white noise excitations. Single-mode response is assumed in the present formulation. Root-mean-square (RMS) maximum deflections for simply supported and clamped beams and plates at various sound spectrum levels are obtained and compared with solutions using the Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation and the equivalent linearization methods. RMS maximum stains and equivalent linear frequencies are compared with the equivalent linearization results for assessment of the accuracy of the finite element method.

Guided transmission for 10 micron tunable lasers

Performance characteristics are reported for two types of IR tunable laser guided transmission, one of which incorporates a CO2 laser, metallic piping or fiber-optics, and a detector system, while the other employs a tunable diode laser, fiber-optics, and a detector system. While existing technology furnishes low loss, rugged, near-single mode piping, fiber-optics exhibits appreciably higher loss, and its multimode fibers are fragile and chemically unstable. Studies have accordingly concentrated on such relevant fiber parameters as loss, toxicity, hygroscopicity, refractive index, flexibility, and thermal behavior at low temperature.

Optical bistability in self-pumped phase-conjugate ring resonators

Bistable oscillations have been observed in BaTiO3 pumped by a single-mode 30-mW (488-nm) argon-ion laser, which is used simultaneously as a ring passive phase conjugator (RPPC) and as a unidirectional ring resonator (UDRR). Strong oscillations in the UDRR increase the threshold coupling strength required for oscillation in the RPPC. The oscillations in the RPPC reduce the fanning in the crystal necessary for the startup of oscillation in the UDRR. Auxiliary resonators pumped by the RPPC are also bistable with the UDRR. Similar bistable oscillations have been observed when the crystal is used simultaneously as a RPPC and as a linear passive phase conjugator.

Nonlinear evolution of longitudinal plasma waves

Long-time nonlinear behavior of single-mode longitudinal plasma waves is studied on the basis of the Vlasov equation with Fokker-Planck collision terms. The resonant layer, trapped island, collisional sublayers, and X-point neighborhoods are analyzed. A nonlinear evolution equation is obtained and the wave-generated current is also evaluated.
