A reexamination of the mean H I density along the Hubble sequence.

Using the 21-cm galaxy surveys of both Roberts (1969) and Bottinelli (1971), it is shown that the mean H I space density is at most a weak function of galactic type along the limited Hubble sequence Sb to Irr. On this basis, it is concluded, contrary to previous thought, that the mean H I density is not the large-scale galactic parameter which determines the morphological characteristics of galaxies.

Mariner 9 extended mission sequence design optimization

This paper discusses the Mariner 9 science sequence design during the extended mission including science objectives, and mission operation and spacecraft constraints. The primary objectives of the extended mission were to complete 100% mapping of the planet, photograph special interest targets, obtain high resolution coverage of prospective Viking landing sites, and to function through the superior conjunction period. The optimization of planet viewing characteristics by moving to different celestial reference stars, and the techniques used to efficiently allocate science links to data taking days are described.

On the generation of the sequence of diffuse resonances observed on top side ionograms

Two different plasma wave instabilities have been invoked in earlier models for the generation of top side ionogram diffuse resonances. Arguments are presented that support the model based on the Harris instability, i.e., the instability resulting from a sounder-stimulated anisotropic electron velocity distribution. Two modifications to this model are also presented. First, it is only necessary for the instability mechanism to operate for a period of the order of milliseconds (rather than tens of milliseconds) in order to explain the observations. Second, the wave associated with the second harmonic of the electron cyclotron frequency, which enters into the nonlinear wave-wave interaction process included in the model, comes from the side bands of the transmitted sounder pulse rather than from the turbulent state of the plasma caused by the pulse. The second modification provides an explanation for the variation of the time duration observed among the members of the sequence of diffuse resonances.

Inferences from protein and nucleic acid sequences - Early molecular evolution, divergence of kingdoms and rates of change

Description of new sensitive, objective methods for establishing the probable common ancestry of very distantly related sequences and the quantitative evolutionary change which has taken place. These methods are applied to four families of proteins and nucleic acids and evolutionary trees will be derived where possible. Of the three families containing duplications of genetic material, two are nucleic acids: transfer RNA and 5S ribosomal RNA. Both of these structures are functional in the synthesis of coded proteins, and prototypes must have been present in the cell at the inception of the fundamental coding process that all living things share. There are many types of tRNA which recognize the various nucleotide triplets and the 20 amino acids. These types are thought to have arisen as a result of many gene duplications. Relationships among these types are discussed. The 5S ribosomal RNA, presently functional in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes, is very likely descended from an early form incorporating almost a complete duplication of genetic material. The amount of evolution in the various lines can again be compared. The other two families containing duplications are proteins; ferredoxin and cytochrome c.

Prediction and identification of some forbidden lines in the Ne I sequence

A magnetic quadrupole transition which according to a prediction by Garstang (1969) is to have an appreciable transition probability in the higher ions of the Ne I sequence has recently been observed in Fe XVII with high resolution by Parkinson (1973), at 17.086 A. Values of an interval predicted by calculations of Crance (1973) are plotted in a graph. Interval values obtained from the curve are used to predict the values of certain transition wavelengths in the ions Si V Cr XV.

The Apsidal-motion test for models of main-sequence stars

Apsidal-motion constants, k2, have been determined for models of homogeneous main-sequence stars constructed with the new 'Thomas-Fermi' opacities of Carson. These models are similar to those constructed with the 'hydrogenic' opacities of Cox and Stewart up to about 7 solar masses, but yield smaller values of k2 at higher masses. Nevertheless, the new theoretical constants are still systematically too large compared with most of the empirical constants known for members of well-observed binary systems. Uniform rotation is found to lower the theoretical constants only slightly. The effect of normal evolution during core hydrogen burning, however, produces good detailed agreement with observations. The primary of alpha Vir is probably evolving normally if Carson's opacities are adopted.

Theoretical studies of massive stars. I - Evolution of a 15-solar-mass star from the zero-age main sequence to neon ignition

The evolution of a star with mass 15 times that of the sun from the zero-age main sequence to neon ignition has been computed by the Henyey method. The hydrogen-rich envelope and all shell sources were explicitly included in the models. An algorithm has been developed for approximating the results of carbon burning, including the branching ratio for the C-12 + C-12 reaction and taking some secondary reactions into account. Penetration of the convective envelope into the core is found to be unimportant during the stages covered by the models. Energy transfer from the carbon-burning shell to the core by degenerate electron conduction becomes important after the core carbon-burning stage. Neon ignition will occur in a semidegenerate core and will lead to a mild 'flash.' Detailed numerical results are given in an appendix. Continuation of the calculations into later stages and variations with the total mass of the star will be discussed in later papers.

An algorithm for a single machine scheduling problem with sequence dependent setup times and scheduling windows

An enumeration algorithm is presented for solving a scheduling problem similar to the single machine job shop problem with sequence dependent setup times. The scheduling problem differs from the job shop problem in two ways. First, its objective is to select an optimum subset of the available tasks to be performed during a fixed period of time. Secondly, each task scheduled is constrained to occur within its particular scheduling window. The algorithm is currently being used to develop typical observational timelines for a telescope that will be operated in earth orbit. Computational times associated with timeline development are presented.

Maneuver sequence design for the post-Jupiter leg of Pioneer Saturn

After passing the planet Jupiter in December 1974, Pioneer 11 is on a flight path on which it will encounter Saturn in late 1979. Following an uncorrected trajectory, the spacecraft would pass 2 million km behind Saturn. A sequence of midcourse maneuvers for modifying the Pioneer trajectory is discussed. The corrected flight path is to bring the spacecraft within 500,000 km of Saturn's satellite Titan. Attention is given to maneuver capabilities and constraints, the maneuver design concept, questions related to the selection of an interim aimpoint, and aspects of maneuver implementation.

Mechanical sequencer

A mechanical sequencer having a rotatable drive shaft is described. The drive shaft has a spline formed thereon. A freely rotatable shaft contains a plurality of rollers positioned thereon, the axis of the freely rotatable shaft having an axis parallel to and offset from the axis of the drive shaft. A drive fitting has an opening therein, the drive fitting being positioned on the drive shaft spline for rotating the fitting with the shaft. A finger is formed integral with the drive fitting for enabling the fitting to move the rollers and the freely rotatable shift. A crank structure is positioned in a plane in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the drive shaft and the freely rotatable shaft. The crank structure has a drive shaft opening through which the shaft passes. The crank structure further contains a slot into which the freely rotatable shaft and one of the rollers extends for driving the crank structure during movement of the freely rotatable shaft.

Does the upper main sequence extend across the whole H-R diagram

The effect of using Carson's (1976) radiative opacities in evolutionary sequences of stellar models has been studied over the mass range from 7 to 60 solar masses. The opacities are very large in the outer part of the envelope and induce such enormous radii for masses greater than about 30 solar masses for a heavy-element fraction of 0.02 or about 20 solar masses for a heavy-element fraction of 0.04 that the evolutionary tracks during the phase of core hydrogen burning extend across the whole H-R diagram. The choice of the Schwarschild or Ledoux criterion for convection makes very little difference for the behavior of the tracks. Evolution through the effective-temperature range (in logarithms) of 3.6 to 4.0 occurs in all cases on a rapid (secular) time scale. Core helium burning takes place exclusively in the red-supergiant configuration for stellar masses exceeding 8 solar masses (heavy-element fraction of 0.02) or 6 solar masses (heavy-element fraction of 0.04). These stellar models seem to be in significantly better agreement with the observed distribution of bright stars on the H-R diagram than are the older models based on the Cox-Stewart opacities. It can be inferred that a large envelope opacity (e.g., Carson's) exists and that substantial mass loss takes place in very massive late-type supergiants.

Preliminary design of an Orbiter/IUS separation sequence

An orbiter/IUS separation sequence to satisfy the assumed requirements of Shuttle Flight 8 was defined for the purpose of gaining an insight into the flight design software requirements. The key to economical and effective flight design for orbiter/IUS proximity operations is considered to be the capability for rapid and accurate generation of graphical displays that will facilitate not only decision making on the part of the designer, but also lucid documentation of rationale and the resulting design features. The data indicate that (1) an OMS burn is required to attain the necessary velocity without subjecting the IUS and its payload to undue plume impingement, and (2) a departure trajectory that places the orbiter above and behind the IUS at SRM ignition time is preferred over the alternative which would place it below and ahead.

On the comparison between equilibrium and disequilibrium condensation sequences of meteorites

A definition is presented of a simple formalism for calculating the condensation sequence of meteoritic minerals in a cooling vapor phase in temperature disequilibrium (between the vapor phase and the condensed phase) when such minerals condense congruently. Certain preliminary comments are made about the possibility of judging the relative plausibility of the equilibrium and the disequilibrium models from the observations in meteorites if a monotonic cooling were indeed the course of condensation in either case.
