Historical notes on aerodynamic research

It is obviously interesting to know the names of those who were the first contributors to aeronautical science. Therefore, without claiming to give a complete history, I present in this article a summary list of names in chronological order relating to the history of experiments on the resistance of the air and its application to aeronautics.

Note on some observed effects of rocket motor operation on the base pressures of bodies in free light

Some measurements of the effects of rocket-motor operation on base pressure were obtained incidental to other research on some bodies in free flight. These data are presented and qualitatively analyzed. The analysis indicates that jet effects on drag are of sufficient importance to deserve consideration in the design of jet motor nozzles, especially for aircraft and missiles where the thrust and drag are of the same order of magnitude. The base-pressure changes induced by the jet should be considered in the structural design of the outer body skin on the aft portion of fuselages containing jets. (author)

A note on the drag due to lift of delta wings at Mach numbers up to 2.0

In order to indicate the effects of Reynolds number and other variables on the drag due to lift of delta wings for Mach numbers up to 2.0, the results of several investigations of wing-body combinations employing delta wings with aspect ratios from 2 to 4 have been assembled for comparison. Effects of Reynolds number, leading-edge radius, and thickness ratio could be correlated with Reynolds number based on the leading-edge radius as a parameter. The results indicated that leading-edge Reynolds number effects were large at low speeds, but decreased with increases in Mach number. The effects of aspect ratio, wing modifications, and trim requirements are discussed.

Note on Hovering Turns with Tandem Helicopters

The source of an appreciable pitching-moment difference between left and right hovering turns for a tandem helicopter is described. The difference in pitching moment results from the difference in rotational speed of the counter rotating rotors with respect to the air while the helicopter is turning.

Some Notes on Gasoline-Engine Development

Experiments were carried out using a special engine with small glass windows and a stroboscope to record various aspects of engine performance. Valve position, supercharging, and torque recoil were all investigated with this experimental apparatus.
