Spatiotemporal control of two-color terahertz generation

A laser pulse composed of a fundamental and properly phased second harmonic exhibits an asymmetric electric field that can drive a time-dependent current of photoionized electrons. The current produces an ultrashort burst of terahertz (THz) radiation. When driven by a conventional laser pulse, the THz radiation is emitted into a cone with an angle determined by the dispersion of the medium. Here we demonstrate that the programmable-velocity intensity peak of a spatiotemporally structured, two-color laser pulse can be used to control the emission angle, focal spot, and spectrum of the THz radiation. Of particular interest for applications, a structured pulse with a subluminal intensity peak can drive highly focusable, on-axis THz radiation. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Robust nonlinear isolators based on frozen mode exceptional point degeneracies

We introduce a class of imperfection-protected nonlinear isolators designed to operate at exceptional point degeneracies (EPDs) of the Bloch modes of periodic photonic structures. These Bloch EPDs are responsible for slow light and the emergence of a scattering frozen mode regime (FMR). When a weak spectral asymmetry is introduced, the group velocity in their proximity varies sharply, boosting the directional nature of the nonlinear interactions and leading to extreme isolation.

The importance of shear on the collective charge transport in CDWs revealed by an XFEL source

Charge transport in materials has an impact on a wide range of devices based on semiconductor, battery, or superconductor technology. Charge transport in sliding charge density waves (CDW) differs from all others in that the atomic lattice is directly involved in the transport process. To obtain an overall picture of the structural changes associated to the collective transport, the large coherent x-ray beam generated by an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) source was used. The CDW phase can be retrieved over the entire sample from diffracted intensities using a genetic algorithm. For currents below threshold, increasing shear deformation is observed in the central part of the sample while longitudinal deformation appears above threshold when shear relaxes. Shear thus precedes longitudinal deformation, with relaxation of one leading to the appearance of the other. Moreover, strain accumulates on surface steps in the sliding regime, demonstrating the strong pinning character of these surface discontinuities. The sliding process of nanometric CDW involves macroscopic sample dimensions.

Overcoming energy limitation in post-compression of picosecond pulses by free beam propagation in air and temporal pulse splitting and recombining

Cryogenically cooled diode-pumped Yb:YAG has been demonstrated to efficiently generate pulses of >1 J energy and several picoseconds duration at a kilohertz repetition rate. Pulse broadening and post-compression techniques capable of operating at these high pulse energies will expand the use of these lasers in applications requiring shorter pulses. Towards this goal, we demonstrate the post-compression of 5.5 ps pulses with energy in the 0.1 J range by spectral broadening of self-collimated large area beams in air. In proof-of-principle experiments, pulses of 65 mJ energy from a cryogenically cooled Yb:YAG laser were compressed to 1.1 ps after 65 m propagation in a compact setup in which the beam was folded using flat mirrors. Further energy scaling was demonstrated by combining this spectral broadening technique with temporal pulse splitting and recombining. 120 mJ pulses were split into two pulses and coherently recombined with 85% efficiency after 50 m of propagation in air to yield 1.4 ps pulses.

Adaptive nonlinear wavefront shaping in layered TMDs

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides are promising candidates for nonlinear photonics applications, offering strong nonlinear susceptibility and compatibility with integrated platforms. Although considerable effort has been devoted to manipulating second harmonic generation in these materials, the dynamic control of nonlinear wavefronts remains largely unexplored. Metasurfaces have enabled significant progress in nonlinear beam engineering, yet their practical implementation is limited by low conversion efficiencies and restricted design flexibility. In this work, we employ feedback-based wavefront shaping using spatial light modulators to enhance SHG from pyramid-like WS 2 multilayer structures by over three orders of magnitude in selected spatial regions. This approach allows us to program nonlinear holograms and dynamically shape the SHG signal through phase-only modulation, opening new possibilities for nonlinear imaging, optical information processing, and data communication.

IOTA Run 2 Beam Dynamics Studies in Nonlinear Integrable Systems

Nonlinear integrable optics is a promising design approach for suppressing fast collective instabilities. To study it experimentally, a new storage ring, the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA), was built at Fermilab. IOTA has recently completed its second scientific run, incorporating many hardware and instrumentation improvements. This report presents the results of the two integrable optics experiments - the quasi-integrable Henon-Heiles octupole system and the fully integrable Danilov-Nagaitsev system. We demonstrate tune spread and dynamic aperture in agreement with tracking simulations, and a stable crossing of the integer resonance. Based on recovered single-particle phase space dynamics, we show improved invariant jitter consistent with intended effective Hamiltonian. We conclude by outlining future plans and efforts towards proton studies and larger designs.

Sextupole misalignment and defect identification and remediation in IOTA

The nonlinear integrable optics studies at the integrable optics test accelerator (IOTA) demand fine control of the chromaticity using sextupole magnets. During the last experimental run undesirable misalignments and multipole composition in some sextupole magnets impacted operations. This report outlines the beam-based methods used to identify the nature of the misalignments and defects, and the subsequent magnetic measurements and remediation of the magnets for future runs.

Injection simulations of space charge dominated proton beams in IOTA

A 2.5 MeV proton injector is being constructed for the IOTA ring at Fermilab to study the interaction of nonlinear integrable optics (NIO) with high space charge beams. Space charge in the transport line from the RFQ to the injection location has a significant current dependent effect on the phase space. Simulation studies to support efficient injection of intense bunches into IOTA are presented, included schemes to inject directly into NIO lattices.

NIOLD Run 4 Report

In this report we discuss the motivation, methods, and analysis of the IOTA Run 4 studies of the Nonlinear Integrable Optics, Landau Damping (NIOLD) experiment. We introduce Landau Damping, an effect that damps collective instabilities in particle accelerators. We also introduce and discuss a new method to measure stability diagrams which quantify the strength of Landau Damping, that employs an antidamper. We also present the data collection process, the data analysis procedure, and the preliminary results. The first results qualitatively agree with the analytical predictions and the simulations. Next steps for the current data and goals for future data are also discussed.
