200 Gbps TBIRD CubeSat Downlink: Pre-Flight Test Results

The Terabyte Infrared Delivery (TBIRD) program will establish an optical communication link from a 6Unanosatellite in low-Earth orbit to a ground station at burst rates up to 200 Gbps. The system is capable of reliable data delivery from a 2 TB storage buffer on the payload to a ground terminal in the presence of atmospheric fading. An overview of the communication architecture for TBIRD is provided as well as results from communications performance testing of the 3U lasercom payload prior to spacecraft integration. Launch is scheduled for mid-year 2022.

Investigation Of Prandtl-Ishlinskii Hysteresis Compensation for Deep Space Optical Communications Pointing Control

This paper studies the simulated performance of the Deep Space Optical Communication (DSOC) laser downlink pointing control system that has a pointing requirement at the sub-microradian scale. To achieve the required pointing precision, the DSOC Flight Laser Transceiver (FLT) point-ahead mirror (PAM) employs piezoelectric actuators, which are widely used in precision applications due to their high motion resolution, rapid response, and high output forces. However, a piezoelectric actuator's performance is often limited by nonlinearities in their response, most significantly hysteresis. To study the effect of hysteresis on our simulated pointing performance, an invertible hysteresis model is developed using the Classical Prantdl-Ishlinskii (CPI) method. The simulation includes models of DSOC hardware and electronic system components based on key parameters (bias, frequency response, noise), with the hysteresis modeled in the PAM piezo actuator dynamics. A Proportional-Integral controller provides feedback with measurements from two potential sources: strain gauge sensors or a photon-counting camera. To compensate for hysteresis behavior, a feedforward inverse CPI hysteresis model is implemented in the control system. Two CPI models are built using different sampling methods (uniform sampling and cosine spacing) and controller performance is compared. For the maximum command range of ±400 μrad at 1 mHz, results show that the feedforward combined with feedback control reduces output tracking error by 50% or 58% (to 0.20 or 0.38 μrad) compared to feedback control alone (from 0.40 or 0.90 μrad), corresponding to the uniform-sampled and cosine-sampled CPI models, respectively.

Ultra: Underwater Laser Telecommunications & Remote Access (Final Report)

High speed wireless communication has proven elusive in subsea environments due to the inherent bandwidth limitations of acoustics and range limitations of other transmission modalities. A truly connected subsea system necessitates a high-speed, resilient architecture that can enable the integration of new sensor technologies and edge analytics and allow closed-loop monitoring and control of subsea operations for integrity monitoring and optimization. Like terrestrial Internet of Things applications, the realization of this “digital subsea” vision requires the application of high speed, point-to-point wireless technologies to complement rather than replace “hard-wired” communications such as optical fiber or acoustic systems. This work addresses the development of ULTRA (Underwater LASER Telemetry and Remote Access), an ultra-long range underwater laser communications system for use in critical points of the subsea communications architecture to increase reliability, operational flexibility, and reduce communication system maintenance associated with physical subsea connections.

Baseline Optical Design for an Integrated Radio and Optical Communication System

This document outlines the baseline optical design for an Integrated Radio and Optical communication (iROC) system, specifically the version labeled in-house as Lunar R1.2a. The version number corresponds to the particular design iteration, including major and minor changes that have been made throughout the design process. The catadioptric design is based on a reflective Cassegrain telescope configuration united with refractive tertiary components in order to approach a diffraction limited, laser beam expander communication transmitter. The configuration presented is intended to be used as an optical transmitter only. Optical design parameters, far-field beam propagations, optical component sensitivity studies, and design explorations are included to provide a high-level understanding of the beam expander’s basic design requirements and optical performance.

Optical technologies for space communication systems; Proceedings of the Meeting, Los Angeles, CA, Jan. 15, 16, 1987

The conference presents papers on optical communications in space, diode laser transmitters, lasercom link transmission characteristics, lasercom systems and technologies, high frequency optical components, and optically controlled phased array antennas. Particular attention is given to a deep space optical communications development program, 0.87-micron CSP diode lasers for spaceborne communications, performance measurements of a diode laser optical communications link with Q = 4 PPM signaling, the optical communications link design for the tracking and data acquisition system, and a cost-performance model for ground-based optical communications receiving telescopes. Other topics include optoelectronic componentry for the direct transmission of microwave signals over optical fiber, applications of monolithic detectors, and optical control considerations for phased array antennas.
