Science Goals and New Mission Concepts for Future Exploration of Titan’s Atmosphere, Geology and Habitability: Titan POlar Scout/orbitEr and in Situ Lake Lander and DrONe Explorer (POSEIDON)

In response to ESA’s “Voyage 2050” announcement of opportunity, we propose an ambitious L-class mission to explore one of the most exciting bodies in the Solar System, Saturn’s largest moon Titan. Titan, a “world with two oceans”, is an organic-rich body with interior-surface-atmosphere interactions that are comparable in complexity to the Earth. Titan is also one of the few places in the Solar System with habitability potential. Titan’s remarkable nature was only partly revealed by the Cassini-Huygens mission and still holds mysteries requiring a complete exploration using a variety of vehicles and instruments. The proposed mission concept POSEI-DON (Titan POlar Scout/orbitEr and In situ lake lander DrONe explorer) would perform joint orbital and in situ investigations of Titan. It is designed to build on and exceed the scope and scientific/technological accomplishments of Cassini-Huygens, exploring Titan in ways that were not previously possible, in particular through full close-up and in situ coverage over long periods of time. In the proposed mission architecture, POSEIDON consists of two major elements: a spacecraft with a large set of instruments that would orbit Titan, preferably in a low-eccentricity polar orbit, and a suite of in situ investigation components, i.e. a lake lander, a “heavy” drone (possibly amphibious) and/or a fleet of mini-drones, dedicated to the exploration of the polar regions. The ideal arrival time at Titan would be slightly before the next northern Spring equinox (2039), as equinoxes are the most active periods to moni-tor still largely unknown atmospheric and surface seasonal changes. The exploration of Titan’s northern latitudes with an orbiter and in situ element(s) would be highly complementary in terms of timing (with possible mission timing overlap), locations, and science goals with the upcoming NASA New Frontiers Dragonfly mission that will provide in situ exploration of Titan’s equatorial regions, in the mid-2030s.

Creating a Deformation Time Series Utilizing InSAR to Assess Hazards and Detect Volcanic Unrest in Clear Lake Volcanic Field, California

According to the U.S Geological Survey, the Clear Lake Volcanic Field (CLVF) in northern California is at a high threat potential for volcanic hazards. Eruptions leading to increased seismic activity could result in silicic domes, cinder cones, and flows that would be dangerous to the residential areas near the volcanic field. Remotely sensed Earth observations can reveal volcanic processes in the subsurface, which are essential to the timely monitoring of potential volcanic activity. In particular, Sentinel-1 C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (C-SAR) and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data capture relative surface deformation at unprecedented high spatial and temporal resolutions. Leveraging C-SAR and DEMs, we conducted interferometric analysis from January 2016 to December 2023. Our results demonstrate 1) the mean surface displacement velocity of the Clear Lake Volcanic field is measured to undergo 5 to 10-centimeter scale deformation and shows a strong correlation with the surrounding faults, 2) apparent seasonal differences in rates of surface change, and 3) seismic activity associated with the geyser geothermal field has a strong correlation with cumulative surface displacement, with active fault zones having 2 to 5 cm of additional displacement. Results indicate that deformation is linked to deep pressure sources causing stresses on the surficial environment that should be considered in hazard mitigation. This study provides a baseline of historic deformation, aiding hazard analysts in communication efforts and streamlining decision-making for potential risks to region residents.

Improving the Accessibility and Usability of Geothermal Information with Data Lakes and Data Pipelines on the Geothermal Data Repository

The Geothermal Data Repository (GDR) provides universal access to data and information resulting from research and development activities funded by the Department of Energy (DOE). The GDR has extended this universal access to big data through integration with data lakes developed by the Open Energy Data Initiative (OEDI). Previously, large datasets such as seismic waveform or distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data could only be accessed by institutions with high performance data storage and compute capabilities, effectively limiting the accessibility of big data to national labs, larger universities, and major corporations. Moreover, the time and resources needed to transport big data and configure them can produce additional barriers to use. Many of the standard formats used for structured data models (also known as content models) are incapable of handling big data and can introduce additional usability problems, often requiring data to be reformatted prior to use. This paper will explore how recent integrations between the GDR and the OEDI data lake have improved the accessibility and usability of geothermal data in a big way, making the data available to a broader audience, and enabling collaborative analysis and innovation across the greater geothermal industry.

Influence of sampling frequency and estimation method on phosphorus load uncertainty in the Western Lake Erie Basin, Ohio, USA

Accurate estimates of nutrient loads are necessary to identify critical source areas and quantify the impact of management practices on pollutant export. Previous studies have investigated nutrient load estimate uncertainty, but they often focus on nutrient loads estimated using an interpolation method for large-scale watersheds with short-term datasets. The study objective was to quantify uncertainty in soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), total phosphorus (TP), and suspended solids (SS) load estimates from two small (<10 3 km 2 ) agricultural watersheds in the western Lake Erie Basin resulting from different sampling frequencies. Each watershed had high temporal resolution datasets of discharge (15 min) and nutrient concentration (1 to 3 samples per day) collected over a 30-year period (1990–2020). Firstly, SRP, TP, and SS loads were calculated using the high temporal resolution datasets, which was assumed as “true loads”. Secondly, the high temporal concentration data were decomposed to semiweekly, weekly, biweekly, and monthly sampling and annual loads were estimated using four common load estimation methods to assess the effect of sampling frequency and load estimation method on load estimate error. Across the four different methods, the composite method had the lowest relative root mean square and absolute bias, but the rectangular interpolation method was the most precise. Furthermore, even with semiweekly sampling, the composite method resulted in an unacceptable level of precision (average imprecision = 39 %), while the interpolation method resulted in an unacceptable bias (average absolute bias = 16 %). Because neither method could provide acceptable accuracy and precision at the lowest decrease in sampling (e.t. semiweekly sampling), continued daily sampling is recommended in these watersheds.

Thiohalorhabdus methylotropha sp. nov., an extremely halophilic autotrophic methylotiotroph from hypersaline lakes

So far, there have been no reports of trimethylamine (TMA)-utilizing extremely halophilic microorganisms in hypersaline habitats. Our aerobic enrichments at 4 M total Na + with 5 mM TMA inoculated with surface sediments from hypersaline soda (at pH 9.5) or chloride-sulfate (at pH 7) lakes in southwestern Siberia were successful only for the latter. The initial enrichment included both bacteria and haloarchaea but only the bacterial component was able to grow as a pure culture with TMA. Strain Cl-TMA forms a new-species lineage within the genus Thiohalorhabdus which includes extremely halophilic and obligate lithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing gammaproteobacteria. Cl-TMA can grow methyloautotrophically utilizing TMA, dimethylamine (DMA) and methanol (MeOH) as the electron donors or chemolithoautotrophically with thiosulfate. Mixotrophic growth was also observed with the three methyl compounds and thiosulfate. Carbon is assimilated autotrophically via the Calvin-Benson-Basham pathway. Unlike the type species of Thiohalorhabdus, T. denitrificans , Cl-TMA was incapable of anaerobic growth via denitrification. The isolate belongs to extreme halophiles growing between 2.5 and 5 M NaCl with an optimum at 3–3.5 M. Genome analysis identified two gene clusters coding for PQQ-dependent methanol dehydrogenases (MxaFI and XoxF), four homologues of the formaldehyde activating enzymes (Faes), a TMA/DMA oxidation locus, and two cluster of genes encoding an N-methylglutamate dehydrogenase pathway (NMGP) for methylamine oxidation. The first steps of C 1 -subtrate conversions are followed by the tetrahydrofolate (THF)-linked and tetrahydromethanopterin (H4MPT)-linked formaldehyde oxidation pathways and two formate dehydrogenases. All of those signatures of methylotrophy were absent in T. denitrificans . In contrast, genes for two key sulfur oxidation enzymes, thiosulfate dehydrogenase TsdAB and sulfide dehydrogenase FccAB, that are present in the type species are missing in Cl-TMA. Thiosulfate is oxidized to sulfate by a combination of an incomplete Sox cycle and an sHdr system. Strain Cl-TMA T (JCM 35977 = UQM 41915) is proposed to be classified as Thiohalorhabdus methylotrophus sp. nov.

A >200 ka U-Th Based Chronology From Lacustrine Evaporites, Searles Lake, CA

Well-dated lacustrine records are essential to establish the timing and drivers of regional hydroclimate change. Searles Basin, California, records the depositional history of a fluctuating saline-alkaline lake in the terminal basin of the Owens River system draining the eastern Sierra Nevada. Here, we establish a U-Th chronology for the ~76-m-long SLAPP-SLRS17 core collected in 2017 based on dating of evaporite minerals. Ninety-eight dated samples comprising nine different minerals were evaluated based on stratigraphic, mineralogic, textural, chemical, and reproducibility criteria. After the application of these criteria, a total of 37 dated samples remained as constraints for the age model. A lack of dateable minerals between 145 and 110 ka left the age model unconstrained over the penultimate glacial termination (Termination II). We thus established a tie point between plant wax δD values in the core and a nearby speleothem δ 18 O record at the beginning of the Last Interglacial. We construct a Bayesian age model allowing stratigraphy to inform sedimentation rate inflections. We find that the >210 ka SLAPP-SRLS17 record contains five major units that correspond with prior work. The new dating is broadly consistent with previous efforts but provides more precise age estimates and enables a detailed evaluation of evaporite depositional history. We also offer a substantial revision of the age of the Bottom Mud-Mixed Layer contact, shifting it from ~130 ka to 178 ± 3 ka. The new U-Th chronology documents the timing of mud and salt layers and lays the foundation for climate reconstructions.

Farm Practice Typologies as a Strategy for Management-Relevant Land Use and Land Cover Mapping in the Great Lakes Region (Version 1) [Dataset]

Dataset overview and development This dataset provides spatially explicit agricultural land-use and land-management typologies developed for the Great Lakes Region (GLR) at the farm-parcel level. The typologies were designed to characterize not only the land-use and land-cover (LULC) associated with individual agricultural farm parcels, but also the land-management practices (LMPs), including irrigation, tile drainage, and conservation easements, occurring within those parcels and how these characteristics change through time. The dataset contains four related typology products: Annual integrated typology – describes the combined LULC and land-management characteristics for each farm parcel for individual years. LULC transition typology – describes the temporal pattern of LULC change for each farm parcel across the study period (2008-2023). LMP trend typology – describes the temporal pattern in the occurrence of LMPs for each farm parcel across the study period. Multi-year integrated typology – combines the LULC transition typology and LMP trend typology to provide an integrated characterization of long-term land-use and management patterns. Purpose of the dataset The purpose of these products is to provide a management-relevant integrated and consistent framework for evaluating the spatial and temporal organization of agricultural landscapes across the GLR. The resulting typologies can: support landscape-scale environmental and land-use analysis; provide spatial information relevant to land-management strategies, conservation planning, policy development, and program evaluation; characterize spatial patterns of agricultural land use and management; examine changes in agricultural landscapes through time; and identify persistent, transitional, and changing agricultural systems. Application of GRACE to the Estimation of Groundwater Storage Change in a Data-poor Region: A Case Study of Ngadda Catchment in the Lake Chad Basin

The present study is to explore the feasibility of GRACE-based estimation of a groundwater storage change in a data-poor region using a case study of the Ngadda catchment in the Lake Chad Basin. Although the Ngadda catchment has only one set of in situ time series data of groundwater from 2006 to 2009 and a limited number of groundwater measurements in 2005 and 2009, GRACE-based groundwater storage change can be evaluated against thein situ groundwater measurements combined with specific yield data. The cross-correlation analysis in the Ngadda catchment shows that maximum rainfall reached in July and August, whereas both the maximum total water storage anomaly and the maximum groundwater storage anomaly occurred 2months later. Whereas the mean annual amplitude of total water storage anomaly is about 17cm from both the average total water storage anomaly from three mascon products and the one from three spherical harmonic products, the mean annual amplitude of soil moisture storage anomaly is substantially varied from5.58cm for CLM to about 14cm for NOAH and Mosaic. The goodness-of-fit tests show that CLM soil moisture produces the closest estimation of groundwater storage anomaly to thein situ groundwater measurements. The present study shows that GRACE-based estimation for groundwater storage anomaly can be a cost-effective and alternative tool to observe how groundwater changes in a basin scale under the limitation of modelling and in situ data availability.
