Improving Cooperative Interactions Between Halogenated Aromatic Additives and Aromatic Side Chain Acceptors for Realizing 19.22% Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells

Processing additive plays an important role in the standard operation procedures for fabricating top performing polymer solar cells (PSCs) through efficient interactions with key photovoltaic materials. However, improving interaction study of acceptor materials to high performance halogenated aromatic additives such as diiodobenzene (DIB) is a widely neglected route for molecular engineering toward more efficient device performances. Here, in this work, two novel Y-type acceptor molecules of BTP-TT and BTP-TTS with different aromatic side chains on the outer positions are designed and synthesized. The resulting aromatic side chains significantly enhanced the interactions between the acceptor molecules and DIB through an arene/halogenated arene interaction, which improved the crystallinity of the acceptor molecules and induced a polymorph with better photovoltaic performances. Thus, high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 18.04% and 19.22% are achieved in binary and ternary blend devices using BTP-TTS as acceptor and DIB as additive. Aromatic side chain engineering for improving additive interactions is proved to be an effective strategy for achieving much higher performance photovoltaic materials and devices.

Forming Gas Annealing Improves the Performance of Ex Situ Sb-Doped CdSeTe Thin-Film Solar Cells

Group V doping in cadmium-selenide-telluride (CdSeTe) polycrystalline thin-film solar cells has demonstrated improved power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) and long-term stabilities as compared to the traditional Cu doping in the last decade. The dopants can be successfully incorporated by either in situ or ex situ doping. Here, we report that forming gas (FG) annealing enhances the efficiencies of CdSeTe polycrystalline thin-film solar cells utilizing ex situ antimony (Sb) doping via close-space sublimation of SbCl3 at ambient pressure. The FG annealing increases the hole density and carrier lifetime, reduces the back barrier height, and, therefore, leads to improved open-circuit voltages (VOCs) and fill factors (FFs). The champion device achieves a PCE of 19.2% with a VOC of 877 mV, a current density (JSC) of 30.2 mA/cm2, and an FF of 72.4%. Importantly, the Sb-doped devices showed improved stability under stress tests as compared to Cu-doped devices.

Using Visual Systems Mapping to Improve Transparency and Comparability of Life Cycle Assessment Baseline Scenarios

Visual systems mapping is a systems engineering approach used to represent complex processes and interactions. This study evaluates its application for documenting assumptions in life cycle assessment (LCA) baseline scenarios. In LCA, the baseline or reference case represents the business as usual system against which changes in impacts (e.g., emissions) are assessed. These baseline assumptions are particularly influential in biomass LCAs, yet they often vary across studies due to regional context, system boundaries, and simplifying assumptions that are not consistently or transparently documented. As a result, key feedbacks, omitted processes, and boundary choices may remain unclear, limiting comparability across studies and weakening their usefulness for decision-making. This study examines whether visual systems mapping can improve the transparency and comparability of biomass LCA baseline scenarios. A case study of five published biomass-related LCAs were reviewed, and their baseline scenarios were translated into visual system maps to identify included processes, omitted components, and underlying assumptions. The analysis demonstrates that visual systems mapping can make baseline assumptions more explicit, highlight excluded dynamics, and improve documentation of system boundaries. Based on these findings, the study recommends the use of visual systems mapping alongside open data repositories and reproducible workflows to support greater transparency, reproducibility, and comparability in LCAs. These improvements can strengthen the role of LCAs in informing decisions related to sustainable biomass systems.

Improving the Mechanical Properties of Cast Aluminum Via Ultrasonication-Induced Microstructural Refinement

One barrier to the broader use of cast aluminum alloys in automotive applications is their poor mechanical properties, especially compared to wrought materials. This study investigates the use of ultrasound to refine the microstructure of cast aluminum alloys during solidification and thus improve their mechanical properties. An A356 aluminum alloy (Al-Si-Mg) with added Fe (to mimic a recycle-grade alloy) was cast in a graphite mold with the simultaneous application of ultrasound. Tensile specimens were extracted from the castings and heat treated to a T6 temper. Ultrasonication during casting transformed the morphology of primary aluminum grains from dendritic (~140 microns in size) to globular (~36 microns in size), increased the ultimate tensile strength by 10 %, and tripled the ductility compared to casting without ultrasound. This improvement in strength and ductility demonstrates the potential for ultrasonic processing to improve the performance of cast aluminum alloys without altering their chemistry or additional post-processing.

Improved Simulation of East Asian Summer Monsoon in the High-resolution CESM1 and Its Causes

Based on the high- and low-resolution Community Earth System Model, version 1 (CESM1), and corresponding simulations from phase 6 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), we compare the interannual variability of the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM). The EASM interannual variability is characterized by the anomalous western North Pacific anticyclone (WNPAC) circulation and the dipole rainfall pattern with a negative southern lobe over the western North Pacific and a positive northern lobe along the Meiyu–Baiu region, which is better reproduced by the high-resolution models. Here, the reason for the improvement in the high-resolution models has been attributed to the better simulation of the warm temperature advection from the wind anomalies on the climatological temperature gradient. Positive sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies over the tropical Indian Ocean are the key to the improved wind anomalies featuring a WNPAC in the high-resolution models. The warm SST anomalies over the tropical Indian Ocean strengthen the WNPAC by triggering a Kelvin-wave response to the enhanced heat release induced by the increased precipitation. Based on the mixed-layer heat budget analysis, the warm SST anomalies over the western Indian Ocean in the high-resolution CESM1 are tied to the anomalous easterly wind along the equator, which reduces surface evaporation and upwelling. Therefore, the better simulations of air-sea feedback and the oceanic mesoscale eddy over the western Indian Ocean are the key for the improved simulation of the EASM interannual variations in the high-resolution CESM1.

Uncertainty improvement of 22 Na based radioactive tracer dilution for determining total mass of pyroprocessing molten salt systems by 154 Eu removal

To determine the total salt mass of the molten salt systems for pyroprocessing spent nuclear fuels, a 22 Na based radioactive tracer dilution was studied in Idaho National Laboratory in recent years. This 22 Na based RTD technique was deemed feasible, but due to the gamma energy peak of 22 Na coinciding with one of the energy peaks of 154 Eu radioisotope in the molten salt, the uncertainty of the 22 Na radioactivity in the 22 Na-spiked salt samples was quite high. To improve the uncertainty of the 22 Na based RTD technique, we proposed to chemically remove the 154 Eu of the salt samples by DGA resin for gamma spectroscopy. The effectiveness of removing 154 Eu on uncertainty improvement was evaluated. Furthermore, it was found that (1) the 154 Eu fission product effect on the uncertainty and detection limit can be effectively eliminated by chemically removing the 154 Eu during the salt sample preparation and (2) the uncertainty of 22 Na radioactivity in the salt samples for electrorefining was significantly improved from 13% to 2%, showing the potential of practical engineering application of 22 Na based RTD as a safeguards technique for molten salt systems for pyroprocessing spent nuclear fuels.

Consequential improvement acquisition function for efficient multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization

Abstract Surrogate-based Bayesian optimization has been widely applied in design optimization to increase sampling efficiency. However, the cost for each evaluation of the objective function can still be very high when physical experiments or large-scale simulations are involved. Multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization is the new approach to further improve the sampling efficiency by reducing the number of expensive samples at the highest fidelity level and supplementing them with less expensive ones at low-fidelity levels. In this paper, a new consequential improvement (CI) acquisition function is proposed to allow for the simultaneous selection of the solution and the fidelity level in problems with a known hierarchy of fidelity levels. The new CI acquisition function incorporates the consequential effectiveness of objective improvement with the considerations of cost, accuracy, and validity differences between high- and low-fidelity samples in engineering practice. The new method of multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization based on the CI is demonstrated with several analytical and simulation-based design examples. In the simulation-based design optimization example, the results show that the CI acquisition function has a decisive advantage in the sampling efficiency over the other methods of multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization with simultaneous selection. The results indicate that the proposed method is particularly advantageous in solving high-dimensional problems and when large cost ratios between high- and low-fidelity evaluations exist and high-fidelity validation is mandatory. Furthermore, the method robustly avoids the prevalent issue of over sampling at low-fidelity levels.

The mitochondrially targeted peptide elamipretide (SS-31) improves ADP sensitivity in aged mitochondria by increasing uptake through the adenine nucleotide translocator (ANT)

Aging muscle experiences functional decline in part mediated by impaired mitochondrial ADP sensitivity. Elamipretide (ELAM) rapidly improves physiological and mitochondrial function in aging and binds directly to the mitochondrial ADP transporter ANT. We hypothesized that ELAM improves ADP sensitivity in aging leading to rescued physiological function. We measured the response to ADP stimulation in young and old muscle mitochondria with ELAM treatment, in vivo heart and muscle function, and compared protein abundance, phosphorylation, and S-glutathionylation of ADP/ATP pathway proteins. ELAM treatment increased ADP sensitivity in old muscle mitochondria by increasing uptake of ADP through the ANT and rescued muscle force and heart systolic function. Protein abundance in the ADP/ATP transport and synthesis pathway was unchanged, but ELAM treatment decreased protein s-glutathionylation incuding of ANT. Mitochondrial ADP sensitivity is rapidly modifiable. This research supports the hypothesis that ELAM improves ANT function in aging and links mitochondrial ADP sensitivity to physiological function.

Improved Creep and Tensile Properties of a Corrosion Resistant Ni-Based Superalloy Using High Temperature Aging and Nb/Ta Additions

Resistance to creep deformation is essential for cast and wrought Ni-based superalloys in next generation energy systems due to the considerable exposure times required at the operating temperature. Here the amount of precipitate strengthening was increased in variants to Inconel alloy 725 (IN725), a corrosion resistant alloy, to improve its elevated temperature mechanical strength. Additions of Nb or Ta coupled with a high temperature aging (HTA) heat treatment promoted the formation of γ" precipitates and grain boundary phases which led to significant increases in time to failure. The HTA increased the creep life of various alloy formulations as compared to the standard aging heat treatment with a maximum improvement of 371%. The Nb and Ta additions lowered the minimum creep rate (MCR) and had a similar effect on increasing creep life. The positive effect of the additions was more pronounced when coupled with the HTA which employed a higher temperature in the first step of the heat treatment to promote precipitate phase formation. The Ti/Al ratio was used to design alloys with preferential formation of ' or γ" precipitates. Compact morphology precipitates were formed in the alloys with a low Ti/Al ratio. While a low Ti/Al ratio was primarily associated with lower MCRs, the effect on the creep life was less evident than that of the HTA. By using additions of Nb or Ta and a HTA heat treatment, the creep life of IN725 for testing at 973 K (700 °C) and 483 MPa was improved by up to 256%.

Increasing the Number of Installed Residential Heat Pump Water Heaters in the USA Through Improved Technology and Utility Programs

Heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) offer an efficient alternative to electric resistance water heaters, but they suffer from limited market penetration. This paper reviews the current state of HPWHs in the USA, focusing on technology developments and programs to increase adoption. What technological improvements are needed to make HPWHs a good fit in more homes? Additionally, what are the best ways of promoting HPWHs to consumers? Improved communication and controls will allow HPWHs to provide demand response and follow dynamic utility rates. To enable fuel-switching, HPWHs are being developed that only need a standard 120V outlet. Split HPWHs can alleviate the cooling and noise that limit the use of HPWHs in small homes, multifamily buildings, and cold climates. Additionally, new utility programs aim to train installers and provide incentives to distributors to increase the number of HPWHs installed. Some utilities offer novel incentive programs that have led to increased customer uptake. Those advances, coupled with improved controls for load shifting and new products such as split HPWHs and HPWHs that can run on 120V power, may finally move the market forward.

Tracking Improvement in Simulated Marine Biogeochemistry Between CMIP5 and CMIP6

The changes or updates in ocean biogeochemistry component have been mapped between CMIP5 and CMIP6 model versions, and an assessment made of how far these have led to improvements in the simulated mean state of marine biogeochemical models within the current generation of Earth system models (ESMs). The representation of marine biogeochemistry has progressed within the current generation of Earth system models. However, it remains difficult to identify which model updates are responsible for a given improvement. In addition, the full potential of marine biogeochemistry in terms of Earth system interactions and climate feedback remains poorly examined in the current generation of Earth system models. Increasing availability of ocean biogeochemical data, as well as an improved understanding of the underlying processes, allows advances in the marine biogeochemical components of the current generation of ESMs. The present study scrutinizes the extent to which marine biogeochemistry components of ESMs have progressed between the 5th and the 6th phases of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP).

Applying design principles to improve hydrogen storage capacity in nanoporous materials

Hydrogen is an attractive option for energy storage because it can be produced from renewable sources and produces environmentally benign byproducts. However, the volumetric energy density of molecular hydrogen at ambient conditions is low compared to other storage methods like batteries, so it must be compressed to attain a viable energy density for applications such as transportation. Nanoporous materials have attracted significant interest for gas storage because they can attain high storage density at lower pressure than conventional compression. Here, we examine how to improve the cryogenic hydrogen storage capacity of a series of porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) by controlling the pore size and increasing the surface area by adding functional groups. We also explore tradeoffs in gravimetric and volumetric measures of the hydrogen storage capacity and the effects of temperature swings using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. We also consider the effects of adding functional groups to the metal–organic framework NU-1000 to improve its hydrogen storage capacity. We find that highly flexible alkane chains do not improve the hydrogen storage capacity in NU-1000 because they do not extend into the pores; however, rigid chains containing alkyne groups do increase the surface area and hydrogen storage capacity. Finally, we demonstrate that the deliverable capacity of hydrogen in NU-1000 can be increased from 40.0 to 45.3 g/L (at storage conditions of 100 bar and 77 K and desorption conditions of 5 bar and 160 K) by adding long, rigid alkyne chains into the pores.

Improved pore network models to simulate single-phase flow in porous media by coupling with lattice Boltzmann method

In this paper, different pore network models to simulate single-phase flow in porous media are built and their accuracy is evaluated. In addition to the conventional pore network model (CPNM) which consists of regular pore bodies and throat bonds, three improved pore network models (IPNMs) are developed allowing to better describing the real pore and throat geometry. The first improved pore network model (IPNM1) replaces the regular throat bond with a throat bond showing the real throat cross section. The second improvement (IPNM2) uses a series of sub-throat bonds with varying cross sections to better describe the real throat geometry, which is firstly proposed in this paper. The third model (IPNM3) extracts the real pore-throat-pore geometry without simplification. The conductance of fluid flow through these more realistic throat bonds is calculated by the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The accuracy and computational efficiency of the different pore network models are evaluated taking the LBM simulation over the whole porous medium as reference solution. The global permeability and detailed pressure distributions in the pores for the different pore network models are validated. The results show that the accuracy of the pore network model increases from CPNM to IPNM3, but at the expense of increasing computational cost. This study suggests that IPNM3 can replace a whole-domain LBM simulation with similar accuracy but much lower computational cost. As a first-order approximation the newly proposed IPNM2 is suggested as good compromise between accuracy and computational cost.

Improved Bayesian regularization of inverse problems in vibrations and acoustics using noise-only measurements

Here, this paper studies Tikhonov regularization (ridge regression) parameter selection for problems in vibrations and acoustics. The selection method is based on a popular Bayesian method, but it incorporates measurements of sensor noise. The regularization parameter is closely related to the ratio of system input energy to noise energy, so noise measurements inform the inference procedure and improve parameter identification. In cases where standard Bayesian regularization identifies zero as the optimal regularization parameter, noise measurements guarantee a unique nonzero optimum. Sufficient theoretical criteria are developed for this guarantee. The method is verified in even-determined and under-determined configurations in an acoustic source localization simulation and a vibration load identification experiment. It is shown to yield significant improvements over existing empirical Bayesian regularization. Improvements are larger in the even-determined case and smaller in the under-determined case, wherein the inverse solution is less sensitive to the regularization parameter.

Precisely doping the surface of tin-based electrocatalysts for improved CO 2 conversion to liquid chemicals

Doping tin catalysts with sulfur can improve the electrochemical CO 2 conversion into formate/formic acid, but the lack of composition-dependent activity trends hinders further catalyst development. Here, we precisely controlled the composition of sulfur-doped Sn catalysts to show that sulfur doping only improves CO 2 conversion over a very narrow composition range, achieving maximum activity at 1.4 at% S. In situ Raman spectroscopy indicted working catalysts were in a primarily metallic state (e.g. S-Sn), and we achieved some of the highest reported partial current densities in both H-cell and full-cell electrolyzer configurations. Density Functional Theory calculations predicted S atoms preferentially occupied the catalyst surface and improved CO 2 reduction by localizing charge density at the catalyst/intermediate interface, which stabilized the *OCOH intermediate and lowered the CO 2 conversion thermodynamic barrier. Our work quantifies the composition-dependent influence of S dopants on Sn-based CO 2 reduction catalysts and provides a pathway for maximizing their CO 2 conversion activity.

Incremental Interval Assignment by Integer Linear Algebra with Improvements

Interval Assignment (IA) is the problem of selecting the number of mesh edges (intervals) for each curve for conforming quad and hex meshing. The intervals x is fundamentally integer-valued. Many other approaches perform numerical optimization then convert a floating-point solution into an integer solution, which is slow and error prone. We avoid such steps: we start integer, and stay integer. Incremental Interval Assignment (IIA) uses integer linear algebra (Hermite normal form) to find an initial solution to the meshing constraints, satisfying the integer matrix equation Solving for reduced row echelon form provides integer vectors spanning the nullspace of A. Here we add vectors from the nullspace to improve the initial solution, maintaining Ax = b Heuristics find good integer linear combinations of nullspace vectors that provide strict improvement towards variable bounds or goals. IIA always produces an integer solution if one exists. In practice we usually achieve solutions close to the user goals, but there is no guarantee that the solution is optimal, nor even satisfies variable bounds, e.g. has positive intervals. We describe several algorithmic changes since first publication that tend to improve the final solution. The software is freely available.

Simultaneously improved J sc and V oc achieving 19.15% efficiency in ternary blend polymer solar cell containing a Y-type acceptor with thiophene based end groups

Simultaneously enhancing the short-circuit current density (J sc ) and open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of current state-of-the-art polymer solar cells (PSCs) containing wide bandgap polymers as donors and Y6 derivatives as acceptors is of great challenge but essential for further improvement of the photovoltaic performances. Here, in this work, two Y-type non-fullerene acceptors of BTP-T and BTP-TCl were designed and successfully synthesized with relatively weak electron-accepting thiophene based end groups, where blue-shifted absorption and upshifted LUMO energy levels were achieved to fill the well-known absorption gap at 700 nm of typical binary devices based Y-type molecules and rise the output voltage, respectively. Simultaneously increased J sc and V oc were achieved in ternary blend devices containing D18:BTP-eC9:BTP-TCl with a significantly improved PCE up to 19.15 %, which is over 7 % increase compared to the binary device. Our results illustrated the great potential of rational design of Y6 derivatives for constructing ternary PSCs to improve their performances.

Graphene nanoplatelets reinforced cement as a solution to leaky wellbores reinforcing weak points in hydrated Portland cement with graphene nanoparticles improves mechanical and chemical durability of wellbore cements

In this work, to improve the performance of wellbore cement under subsurface environments, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) were added in various percentages to Class-H cement slurry. Microstructural characterization of cement slurries cured at 90 °C and 95% RH indicates that GNP modifies the microstructure of hydrated cement by reinforcing pore spaces. As a result, the mechanical properties, such as Young's modulus and axial peak stress, obtained from high temperature triaxial compression tests are significantly improved based on different percentages of added GNPs. Furthermore, the hydrated 1 × 2 inch GNP- Portland cement cores tested under simulated deep wellbore conditions of high-temperature and high pressure (HTHP), appear to have a ductile-like behavior, when compared to a typical brittle nature of Portland cement pastes. From our observations and published data on graphene resistance to fracture, GNP addition to cement is evidently enhancing the flexibility of cement. These improvements would reduce the risks associated with wellbore cement deterioration and a consequent leakage in fossil fuel production, geothermal energy production, CO 2 storage as well as long-term sealing materials in plugging and abandonment of all wellbores at the end of their service life.
