Exploratory Investigation of Disengagements and Crashes in Autonomous Vehicles Under Mixed Traffic: An Endogenous Switching Regime Framework

Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) have a large potential to improve traffic safety but also pose some critical challenges. While AVs may help reduce crashes caused by human error, they still may experience failures of technologies and sensing, as well as decision-making errors in a mixed traffic environment. A disengagement refers to an AV transitioning control from autonomous systems to the trained test driver. The safety critical nature of disengagements makes it imperative to analyze disengagements and crashes together. In this study, we analyze both crashes and disengagements from real-world AV driving in California to fill the knowledge gap regarding the relationship between disengagements and crashes in a mixed traffic environment. A nested logit model was calibrated using three different outcomes: (1) disengagement with a crash, (2) disengagement with no crash, and (3) no disengagement with a crash. Furthermore, endogenous switching regime models were also calibrated to draw distinctions between the relation of disengagements and crashes while accounting for endogeneity effects. The results show that factors related to AV systems (such as software failures) and other roadway participants increase the propensity of a disengagement without a crash. Furthermore, AVs were observed to disengage less often as the technology matured over time. Marginal effects revealed an 8% decrease. The results thus suggest that disengagements are a part of AVs' safe performance and disengagement alerts may need to be triggered in order to avoid certain failures with current technology.

Enabling Data Exchange and Data Integration with the Common Information Model: An Introduction for Power Systems Engineers and Application Developers

The Common Information Model (CIM) is an open-source information model that is used to model an electrical network and the various equipment used on the network. CIM is widely used for data exchange of bulk transmission power systems and is finding increasing use for distribution systems. Use of a non-proprietary information model (such as CIM) that has been agreed upon and adopted by numerous utilities, vendors, and researchers allows significant reduction in the effort and cost of data integration. Likewise, adoption of open data platforms built around the CIM increases available functionalities for managing and optimizing the smart grid of the future. This report is intended as an introduction to CIM for utility engineers, power systems researchers, and application developers, providing a broad view of the CIM and how particular profiles can be adapted for various use cases. Unlike most other CIM introduction documents and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards (which are mostly targeted to an audience of data scientists, enterprise database managers, and platform developers), this report is intended for users of traditional power systems analysis software and other readers without any prior experience with canonical information models, data profiles, or UML modeling.

Software Verification and Validation Guidelines for Non-Linear Soil-Structure Interaction Analysis

Seismic analysis of structures, systems, and components (SSCs), including the consideration of soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects, is an important and required step in the design and licensing of nuclear power plant SSCs important to safety. Historically, the SSI analysis of nuclear structures has been performed using equivalent linear methods. However, there has been considerable industry investment in alternative seismic design and analysis approaches to reduce the construction cost of new reactors. Toward that goal and in alignment with the Licensing Modernization Project (LMP) framework, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (US NRC) has proposed a risk-informed, performance-based approach to seismic design that allows inelastic response in those nuclear plant structures not required for confinement. As a complementary effort, reactor designers are exploring nonlinear seismic analysis methods to optimize structural designs and reduce construction costs.

Enhancing Monte Carlo Workflows for Nuclear Reactor Analysis with Metamodel-Driven Modeling

Monte Carlo codes are essential components of many reactor physics simulation workflows as high-fidelity continuous-energy neutron transport solvers. Among Monte Carlo radiation transport codes, MCNP is particularly notable due to its diverse simulation capabilities, large user base, and long validation history. Despite being a powerful simulation tool, MCNP provides limited capabilities to allow automated execution, model transformation, or support for user-defined logic and abstractions that limit its compatibility with modern workflows. Here, to better integrate MCNP into a modern scientific workflow, we have developed an intuitive yet full-featured MCNP Application Program Interface (API) in Python, named MCNPy, which provides a specialized set of classes for MCNP input development. Moreover, to guarantee that our reading, writing, and modeling capabilities remain self-consistent (and to render the huge scope of the MCNP API manageable), we have adopted a strategy of model-driven software development in which a generalized model of the MCNP input format has been created. From this generalized model, or “metamodel,” problem-specific implementations such as an engine for input validation or a codebase for programmatic operations may be automatically generated. Since MCNPy primarily acts as a Python front-end to the underlying Java API that directly interfaces with the metamodel, it is intrinsically linked to the metamodel and thus remains maintainable. With MCNPy, users can programmatically read, write, and modify any syntactically valid MCNP input file regardless of its origin. These capabilities allow users to automate complicated tasks like design optimization and model translation for nuclear systems. As examples, this work demonstrates the use of MCNPy to find the critical radius of a plutonium sphere and to translate a 9000+ line MCNP input file into a corresponding OpenMC model.

spot_bt v.0.1.1

SAND2024-08430O spot_bt allows users to easily construct complex, autonomous behaviors without having to overly rely on Boston Dynamic’s Spot robot software development kit. Using a form-of-state machine called a "behavior tree," the software develops and applies different "leaves" or actions to the robot. Attaching multiple actions in sequence creates a "branch," and a series of these make up the "tree." The software works on any x86 or aarch64 hardware but must run on a Linux OS. Preliminary Thermal-Hydraulic Analysis of the UTA–2 Subcritical Linear Accelerator–Driven System

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s mission includes establishing a reliable supply of 99 Mo without highly enriched uranium. Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) supports this objective through collaborative research and development with industrial partners. Niowave Inc., a current partner, is currently designing a subcritical linear accelerator-driven system (ADS) and preparing for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s licensing process. Niowave’s system has the potential to efficiently supply medical radioisotopes. The technology includes a superconducting electron accelerator and a pile of both natural and low-enriched uranium (LEU) targets. The process fissions uranium and many valuable isotopes can then be extracted from the targets. Niowave is currently iterating through conceptual and detailed design processes for several system sizes. This report discusses UTA–2, which is at the demonstration stage. UTA–2 will validate numerical modeling results with experimental measurements before progressing to the detailed design of UTA–3, the commercial-sized ADS. The thermal-hydraulic behavior of the UTA–2 core design was numerically investigated using STAR-CCM+, as described in this report. STAR-CCM+, a state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software that was commercially developed by Siemens, has an extensive user base and a set of validation studies. It is also compliant with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Nuclear Quality Assurance 1 standard. Three cases are investigated in this report. Case 1 quantified the temperature field within the UTA–2 assembly and water tank using only conduction as the method of thermal energy transport. This simplified approach was overly conservative and yielded wetted cladding temperatures above the coolant saturation temperature. In this case, the maximum temperature of the wetted cladding surface of the highest power rod exceeded the saturation temperature of water by 63.8°C. Because of the overly conservative approach taken in Case 1 and its negative subcooled margin, buoyancy-driven natural circulation flow physics were implemented in Case 2. Adding coolant motion significantly distributed the thermal energy of the system through convective heat transfer. This relatively small amount of convective heat transfer significantly reduced system temperatures and increased the subcooled margin from –63.8 to 61.3°C. This margin confirmed that no boiling was expected during normal operation of UTA–2 at 230 W. Case 3 had no additional physics models but considered an overpower event during which the power of each LEU and natural uranium rod was at its respective peak values. This resulted in a study with the total assembly power equal to 176% of the nominal power of 230 W considered in Cases 1 and 2. The resulting natural circulation flows were slightly enhanced. The subcooled margin decreased slightly to 46.3°C, which is still a significant margin to local boiling of the water within the tank. This margin confirmed that no boiling was expected during an abnormal operation of UTA–2 at 406 W.

Technical Learning and Integration of Interns in Advanced Protection Lab Space: Enhancements to Testbed and Experiments to Improve Workflows for Producing Datasets

This report presents a successful technical learning integration of student interns in the Advanced Protection Laboratory space, located in the Grid Research Integration and Deployment Center (GRID-C) at the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Advanced Protection Laboratory was created for the primary goal of supporting DOE’s research projects and technical staff at ORNL. As a secondary goal, the space was used for collaborating with ORNL’s intern programs, providing support to the lab’s mentors and student interns. In 2024, three student interns spent a summer in the Advanced Protection lab space and were involved in the DarkNet Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) project. The students had a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience with communication and protective relay equipment focused on information technology, data analytics, and cybersecurity. Experiences in the lab space with real equipment and software integration offer education and professional development for students, which is especially important because of a need in the energy industry to recruit highly skilled power and communication engineers.

2021 Small Turbine Certification Awardee: Intergrid LLC

Currently, there are no U.S., fully certified inverters for wind turbines in the 10-15-kilowatt (kW) range. The federal government's Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP) and Small Business Innovation Research programs present the most viable paths for manufacturers in the distributed wind energy industry to conduct research, develop their products, and, ultimately, commercialize them. Through CIP, Intergrid LLC is reducing the cost, size, and weight of its legacy inverter for distributed wind turbines while increasing efficiency, reliability, and serviceability. To accomplish this, Intergrid will address three areas related to power electronics for distributed wind turbines: (1) Software verification and functional safety certification; (2) Simulation for grid-interconnecting testing; (3) Component alternatives that reduce cost and improve reliability and serviceability. The first two areas relate to long-term management of inverter software, which, for grid-connected inverters, must comply with three standards - one issued by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and two issued by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Dynamic force and stability prediction for milling using feed rate scheduling software and time-domain simulation

This paper describes: 1) the use of feed rate scheduling software to predict the radial depth of cut variation for three-axis milling toolpaths and; 2) the use of the radial depth profile in a time-domain simulation to predict dynamic cutting forces. The time-domain simulation, which also includes the tool tip frequency response functions and force model (which relates the cutting force components to the chip geometry) as inputs, enables dynamic force profiles to be predicted and parameter combinations that cause chatter to be identified. A ramp geometry is selected that provides constantly varying radial depth and force predictions are completed at multiple axial depths for comparison to measured forces. Both stable and unstable (chatter) milling conditions were observed with good agreement between time-domain simulation and measurement results. The value of combining the feed rate scheduling software and time-domain simulation is demonstrated.

2.2.2.405 - Verdant/NREL Research Measurement Campaign

The marine renewable energy industry primarily uses thermoset composite materials for blades and other hydrodynamic components, which can have up to 50% reduction in strength when exposed to seawater and are not recyclable. Thermoplastic composite materials have been shown at a coupon-scale to have improved seawater saturated properties but have not been validated at full scale. The primary goal of the project is to demonstrate the structural properties of thermoplastic-fiberglass composite blades compared to epoxy-fiberglass composite blades in seawater at a tidal energy site on an operational turbine. Through this work, NREL manufactured, tested and deployed thermoplastic blades and a data acquisition system on Verdant Power's turbine TriFrame in the East River, NYC. The thermoplastic blades and DAQ were retrieved after a 6-month deployment with no signs of degradation and all cable connections, structural supports and strain gages had a 100% survival rate. The blades are currently undergoing post-deployment structural validation to compare their performance to traditional epoxy blades that were deployed for the same amount of time. This will increase confidence in thermoplastic materials and move it closer to commercial adoption, as well as increase confidence in the design of a DAQ and instrumentation method for a tidal turbine. However, due to an error in the DAQ software that was introduced after the DAQ and software were validated, there was no loads data collected during the deployment.
