System and method for engine control with pressure reactive device to control combustion timing

The present disclosure relates to a system for controlling ignition of an intake charge directed into an internal combustion engine. The system may have a movable component operably associated with at least one of a piston of the engine or a combustion chamber of the engine. The movable component may be tuned to deflect in response to a predetermined pressure being reached in a cylinder in which the piston is housed. The movable component operates to deflect in response to the predetermined pressure being reached in the cylinder as the piston travels toward top dead center during its compression stroke, to change a compression ratio of the engine.

The Tiny Triplet Finder as a Versatile Track Segment Seeding Engine for Trigger Systems

In high energy physics experiment trigger systems, track segment seeding is a resource consuming function and the primary reason is the computing complexity of the segment finding process. As the Moore's Law is reaching its physical limit, reducing computing complexity should be carefully considered, rather than keep piling up silicon resources. The Tiny Triplet Finder is a scheme that reduces the computing complexity of the segment seeding. As a proof of concept, a 3D track segment seeding engine core based on the Tiny Triplet Finder has been implemented and tested in a low-cost FPGA device. The seeding engine is designed to preselect and group hits (stubs) from detector layers to feed subsequent track fitting stage. The seeding engine consists of a Hough transform space for r-z view and a Tiny Triplet Finder for r-phi view to implement 3D constraints. The seeding engine is organized as a pipeline so that each hit is processed in a single clock cycle. Taking advantage of the register-like storage block scheme which enables effectively resetting of a block RAM within a single clock cycle, clearing or refreshing the seeding engine takes only one clock cycles between two events. The Tiny Triplet Finder is also a generic coincidence finding scheme that can be used for many tasks. As a versatility demonstration, track segment finding performances for two distinctive detector geometries are tested in our seeding engine. In a collider barrel-layer geometry, the fake segment rates are studied for 3D (i.e., both r-phi and r-z views) and 2D (i.e., r-phi or r-z view only) configurations for high hit multiplicity events (>4000 hits/layer in the barrel region). Another detector geometry contains strip plane layers with timing information. The numbers of coincidences, both real or fake, with or without timing ("3D" or "2D") information at various hit multiplicities are studied.

A Multi-Scale Inference, Estimation, and Prediction Engine for Earth System Modeling

We posit that AI methods can be leveraged to significantly enhance the predictive skill of forward Earth system modeling (ESM) activities. A hybrid framework incorporating traditional ESM modeling, inference methods, and AI techniques could make better use of both measured and computed information as well as computational resources by targeting inference tasks at program priorities, such as the predictability of precipitation extremes. This runtime pathway to closing the simulation/analysis-data/model improvement loop will streamline the traditional offline pathway to model improvement, which is based on domain science expertise, while suggesting guidance for further observations and measurements.

Systems and methods for detecting and mitigating cyber attacks on power systems comprising distributed energy resources

Extensive deployment of interoperable distributed energy resources (DER) on power systems is increasing the power system cybersecurity attack surface. National and jurisdictional interconnection standards require DER to include a range of autonomous and commanded grid-support functions which can drastically influence power quality, voltage, and the generation-load balance. Investigations of the impact to the power system in scenarios where communications and operations of DER are controlled by an adversary show that each grid-support function exposes the power system to distinct types and magnitudes of risk. The invention provides methods for minimizing the risks to distribution and transmission systems using an engineered control system which detects and mitigates unsafe control commands.

Quantum Engineering With Hybrid Magnonic Systems and Materials (Invited Paper)

Quantum technology has made tremendous strides over the past two decades with remarkable advances in materials engineering, circuit design and dynamic operation. In particular, the integration of different quantum modules has benefited from hybrid quantum systems, which provide an important pathway for harnessing the different natural advantages of complementary quantum systems and for engineering new functionalities. This review focuses on the current frontiers with respect to utilizing magnetic excitations or magnons for novel quantum functionality. Magnons are the fundamental excitations of magnetically ordered solid-state materials and provide great tunability and exibility for interacting with various quantum modules for integration in diverse quantum systems. The concomitant rich variety of physics and material selections enable exploration of novel quantum phenomena in materials science and engineering. In addition, the relative ease of generating strong coupling and forming hybrid dynamic systems with other excitations makes hybrid magnonics a unique platform for quantum engineering. We start our discussion with circuit-based hybrid magnonic systems, which are coupled with microwave photons and acoustic phonons. Subsequently, we are focusing on the recent progress of magnon-magnon coupling within confined magnetic systems. Next we highlight new opportunities for understanding the interactions between magnons and nitrogen-vacancy centers for quantum sensing and implementing quantum interconnects. Lastly, we focus on the spin excitations and magnon spectra of novel quantum materials investigated with advanced optical characterization.

Common occupational classification system amendments for Accelerator Science and Engineering workforce

A common system to classify occupations and skills is essential to support accelerator workforce planning between the Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. In 2025, ten DOE laboratories conducted a census of their accelerator science and engineering workforce and projected their accelerator workforce needs for the next ten years. To support this, revision 3 of the “Common Occupational Classification System” (COCS) was used as a common taxonomy. Modifications were made to include accelerator-specific skills and specialisms. COCS was originally developed for DOE Office of Environmental Restoration and Waste Management in 1996. The framework provides a high-level functional structure that can be expanded with further occupations and specialisms and remains well aligned to DOE laboratory roles nearly 30 years later. Accelerator occupations and specialisms were added to the framework for the 2025 effort to quantify the accelerator workforce. This document is a companion document to COCS and provides a definition for these new occupations and specialisms that do not appear in COCS. Proceeding with a stable taxonomy is seen as essential such that its use becomes easier each year; the taxonomy as used for the 2025 effort is recommended to be continued.
