Improving the efficiency of GaP LED's which emit green light

A study of techniques for preparing n-type material and junctions which yield the most consistent high diode efficiency values high lighted the role that Ga vacancies and/or associated defects play in reducing the green luminescent efficiency of n-type GaP. A useful method for obtaining good quality material was developed. It is shown that junction formation at high temperatures in a process where the n to p transition occurs without removing the substrate from the furnace yields devices superior to those obtained by diffusion or double epitaxy in the conventional manner previously used for GaP junction formation.

Silicon solar cell efficiency - Practice and promise.

The maximum efficiency of silicon solar cells is calculated and yields a value near 18%. Additionally, the performance of these high efficiency cells in a synchronous orbit radiation field is calculated and indicates that these cells would be superior to present silicon cells at all times. The performance of conventional cells is analyzed and several areas in which performance gains may be achieved are discussed. These areas include improvements in diffused region profile, in reduction of excess forward currents in cells made from low resistivity material and in the theory for describing complex solar cell structures.

Saturn systems holddown acoustic efficiency and normalized acoustic power spectrum.

Saturn systems field acoustic data are used to derive mid- and far-field prediction parameters for rocket engine noise. The data were obtained during Saturn vehicle launches at the Kennedy Space Center. The data base is a sorted set of acoustic data measured during the period 1961 through 1971 for Saturn system launches SA-1 through AS-509. The model assumes hemispherical radiation from a simple source located at the intersection of the longitudinal axis of each booster and the engine exit plane. The model parameters are evaluated only during vehicle holddown. The acoustic normalized power spectrum and efficiency for each system are isolated as a composite from the data using linear numerical methods. The specific definitions of each allows separation. The resulting power spectra are nondimensionalized as a function of rocket engine parameters. The nondimensional Saturn system acoustic spectrum and efficiencies are compared as a function of Strouhal number with power spectra from other systems.

X-ray reflection efficiency of nickel-coated quartz optical flats

The reflection efficiency of quartz optical flats vacuum coated with 1000-A nickel was evaluated. Of the three vacuum coated samples tested, two had been contaminated during the firing of the Lunar Module Reaction Control System in the vacuum chamber. Measurements were made for 1.54-, 1.79-, and 2.29-A incident radiation. The reflection efficiency of the contaminated samples was reduced by as much as 50 percent for some angles of incidence.

An efficient multiplexing approach for adaptive aircraft communications via a relay satellite.

Description of a coherent wide-angle multiplexing approach which is 4 to 8 dB more efficient in the utilization of satellite power as compared to a multicarrier transmission accessing a single TWT amplifier transponder. The wide-angle multiplexing approach achieves this performance by efficiently trading the modulation power improvement against backoff at the satellite earth terminal phase modulator. A simple addition of an amplitude clipper at the modulator input is critical to the proper operation of the system.

High-quantum-efficiency infrared up-conversion.

Experimental study in which 100% conversion of infrared photons into visible photons was achieved through three wave interactions in a nonlinear medium. The first experimental evidence of overconversion is presented, and the classical theory of up-conversion in the high-conversion-efficiency region is confirmed. A laser pump light feedback technique is described that promises to make the process practical with modestly powerful pump lasers and less than perfect nonlinear crystals. The nonlinear medium used was a LiIO3 crystal that cannot be 90-deg phase-matched. The 'walk off' that resulted helped make possible the attainment of 100% conversion efficiency.

Electromagnetic diffraction efficiencies for plane reflection diffraction gratings

Results are presented of research activities on holographic grating research. A large portion of this work was performed using rigorous vector diffraction theory, therefore, the necessary theory has been included in this report. The diffraction efficiency studies were continued using programs based on a rigorous theory. The simultaneous occurrence of high diffraction efficiencies and the phenomenon of double Wood's anomalies is demonstrated along with a graphic method for determining the necessary grating parameters. Also, an analytical solution for a grating profile that is perfectly blazed is obtained. The performance of the perfectly blazed grating profile is shown to be significantly better than grating profiles previously studied. Finally, a proposed method is described for the analysis of coarse echelle gratings using rigorous vector diffraction that is currently being developed.

High-efficiency, 200 watt, 12-gigahertz traveling wave tube

Design and performance of a highly efficient experimental 200-watt traveling wave tube for space communications are described. The tube uses a coupled cavity slow wave structure with periodic permanent magnet focusing. A two-step velocity taper is incorporated in the slow wave structure for velocity resynchronization with the modulated beam. The spent beam is reconditioned in a refocusing section before it is collected in a novel multistage depressed collector. The collector is radiation cooled and heat insulated from the tube body. At saturation the tube provides peak output power of 240 watts with a 35-db gain and an overall maximum efficiency of 56 percent.

Design, construction and evaluation of a 12.2 GHz, 4.0 kW-CW high efficiency klystron amplifier

An analytical and experimental program is described, for studying design techniques for optimizing the conversion efficiency of klystron amplifiers, and to utilize these techniques in the development and fabrication of an X-band 4 kW cw klystron, for use in satellite-borne television broadcast transmitters. The design is based on a technique for increasing the RF beam current by using the second harmonic space charge forces in the bunched beam. Experimental analysis was also made of a method to enhance circuit efficiency in the klystron cavities. The design incorporates a collector which is demountable from the tube to facilitate multistage depressed collector experiments employing an axisymmetric, electrostatic collector for linear beam microwave tubes.

Luminous efficiency measurements for silicon and aluminum simulated micrometeors

Laboratory measurements on simulated silicon and aluminum micrometeors in an air atmosphere have produced values for the elemental photographic luminous efficiencies of silicon over a velocity range 13-48 km/sec and of aluminum over a range 12-42 km/sec. The photographic luminous efficiency of both elements first increases with increasing velocity, then reaches a peak and declines. Supplementary measurements on Si and Al in atmospheres of O2 and N2 support the air results.

Efficient generation of statistically good pseudonoise by linearly interconnected shift registers

A number of efficient new algorithms for generating digital pseudonoise are presented. The algorithms are efficient because a large number of new pseudorandom bits are generated at each iteration of a computer implementation or at each clock pulse of a hardware implementation. The maximal-length shift register sequences obtained have good randomness properties. Some of the properties of p-n sequences are reviewed and the results of an extensive statistical evaluation of the pseudonoise are presented.

The efficient identification of relativistic particles by transition radiation

A system of transition radiation detectors has been constructed and exposed to beams of electrons and pions in the energy range of 3 to 15 GeV at SLAC. Transition radiation was generated in a variety of stacks of mylar foils (radiators), and its intensity was detected with 7 multiwire proportional chambers. The raw data demonstrate a good separation between electron and pion induced signals. A more detailed analysis shows that a very efficient identification of individual particles is possible. Typically, a detection efficiency for electrons above 90%, combined with a pion-electron discrimination ratio of .001, has been achieved. Some conclusions with respect to the design of a practical detector for relativistic particles are drawn.

Numerical orbit integration efficiency of the Delaunay-Similar elements

Orbit equations with a set of conservative and a set of nonconservative perturbing potentials were considered. Scheifele's DS formulation of these equations has dependent variables similar to Delaunay's orbital elements with the true anomaly as the independent variable. Efficiency curves of computing cost v.s. accuracy were constructed for Adams integrators of order of 2 through 15 with several correcting algorithms and for a Runga-Kutta integrator. Considering stability regions, choices were made for the optimally efficient integration modes for the DS elements. Integrating in these modes reduces computing costs for a specified accuracy.
