Experimental considerations for 2-D acoustooptic spectrum analysis

Two-dimensional acoustooptic spectrum analysis (AOSA) with the associated reference function generator and real-time image processor is presented. The resolution, bandwidth, and analysis time of the two-dimensional AOSA depend on the characteristics. The operation of the two-dimensional AOSA and the experimental considerations for obtaining a high-resolution two-dimensional spectrum in real time are described.

Three-dimensional turbopump flowfield analysis

A program was conducted to develop a flow prediction method applicable to rocket turbopumps. The complex nature of a flowfield in turbopumps is described and examples of flowfields are discussed to illustrate that physics based models and analytical calculation procedures based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are needed to develop reliable design procedures for turbopumps. A CFD code developed at NASA ARC was used as the base code. The turbulence model and boundary conditions in the base code were modified, respectively, to: (1) compute transitional flows and account for extra rates of strain, e.g., rotation; and (2) compute surface heat transfer coefficients and allow computation through multistage turbomachines. Benchmark quality data from two and three-dimensional cascades were used to verify the code. The predictive capabilities of the present CFD code were demonstrated by computing the flow through a radial impeller and a multistage axial flow turbine. Results of the program indicate that the present code operated in a two-dimensional mode is a cost effective alternative to full three-dimensional calculations, and that it permits realistic predictions of unsteady loadings and losses for multistage machines.

Cluster analysis based on dimensional information with applications to feature selection and classification

A new clustering algorithm is presented that is based on dimensional information. The algorithm includes an inherent feature selection criterion, which is discussed. Further, a heuristic method for choosing the proper number of intervals for a frequency distribution histogram, a feature necessary for the algorithm, is presented. The algorithm, although usable as a stand-alone clustering technique, is then utilized as a global approximator. Local clustering techniques and configuration of a global-local scheme are discussed, and finally the complete global-local and feature selector configuration is shown in application to a real-time adaptive classification scheme for the analysis of remote sensed multispectral scanner data.

Three-dimensional temporal reconstruction and analysis of plume images

An experiment with two subsonic jets generating a cross-flow was conducted as part of a study of the structural features of temporal reconstruction of plume images. The flow field structure was made visible using a direct injection flow visualization technique. It is shown that image analysis and temporal three-dimensional visualization can provide new information on the vortical structural dynamics of multiple jets in a cross-flow. It is expected that future developments in image analysis, quantification and interpretation, and flow visualization of rocket engine plume images may provide a tool for correlating the engine diagnostic features by interpreting the evolution of the structures in the plume.

Three-dimensional compressible viscous analysis of mixer nozzles

An analysis-based design procedure for compound-mixer exhaust nozzles is presented and compared to test data. The design approach is based on two numerical solutions to the 3-D viscous compressible Navier-Stokes equations: an equation splitting technique used for the analysis of the core and bypass flow, and a parabolic marching scheme used in the analysis of the mixing duct. The selection of the analytical methods through test data comparisons and their coupling into an integrated design system are discussed. NASA test data is used to demonstrate the validity of the computations from the exhaust system rating station, upstream of the mixer lobe, to the nozzle throat. An estimate is made of the savings in development time and cost utilizing the new procedure.

Specialty three-dimensional finite element analysis codes

General purpose finite element computer codes that can model inelastic material behavior have been available for more than a decade. However, these codes have not been accurate enough for use in analyzing hot section engine components. To correct this problem, General Electric developed a series of nine new stand-alone computer codes for NASA. Because of the large temperature excursions associated with hot section engine components, these codes have been designed to accommodate broad variations in material behavior, including plasticity and creep. The capabilities of these computer codes are summarized.

Preconditioned domain decomposition scheme for three-dimensional aerodynamic sensitivity analysis

A preconditioned domain decomposition scheme is introduced for the solution of the 3D aerodynamic sensitivity equation. This scheme uses the iterative GMRES procedure to solve the effective sensitivity equation of the boundary-interface cells in the sensitivity analysis domain-decomposition scheme. Excluding the dense matrices and the effect of cross terms between boundary-interfaces is found to produce an efficient preconditioning matrix.

A Special Investigation to Develop a General Method for Three-dimensional Photoelastic Stress Analysis

The method of strain measurement after annealing is reviewed and found to be satisfactory for the materials available in this country. A new general method is described for the photoelastic determination of the principal stresses at any point of a general body subjected to arbitrary load. The method has been applied to a sphere subjected to diametrical compressive loads. The results show possibilities of high accuracy.

Strategic planning for aircraft noise route impact analysis: A three dimensional approach

The strategic routing of aircraft through navigable and controlled airspace to minimize adverse noise impact over sensitive areas is critical in the proper management and planning of the U.S. based airport system. A major objective of this phase of research is to identify, inventory, characterize, and analyze the various environmental, land planning, and regulatory data bases, along with potential three dimensional software and hardware systems that can be potentially applied for an impact assessment of any existing or planned air route. There are eight data bases that have to be assembled and developed in order to develop three dimensional aircraft route impact methodology. These data bases which cover geographical information systems, sound metrics, land use, airspace operational control measures, federal regulations and advisories, census data, and environmental attributes have been examined and aggregated. A three dimensional format is necessary for planning, analyzing space and possible noise impact, and formulating potential resolutions. The need to develop this three dimensional approach is essential due to the finite capacity of airspace for managing and planning a route system, including airport facilities. It appears that these data bases can be integrated effectively into a strategic aircraft noise routing system which should be developed as soon as possible, as part of a proactive plan applied to our FAA controlled navigable airspace for the United States.
