Rapid scalable fabrication of roll-to-roll slot-die coated flexible perovskite solar cells using intense pulse light annealing

Perovskite solar cells have achieved high efficiencies at the lab scale using batch processes that often may not be scalable. Processes that can be integrated into a continuous manufacturing platform, such as roll-to-roll, where several processes can be carried out sequentially are necessary to develop a new cost-competitive solar technology. In this work, intense pulsed light thermal post-processing is coupled with scalable slot-die coating and air knife evaporation in a high-speed roll-to-roll process of up to 2 m min –1 . The optimization of IPL energy parameters, web speeds, solution flow rates, and concentration of precursor inks yielded a champion power conversion efficiency of 11.24% for a 1 cm 2 roll-to-roll coated device. The overall processing time for a single layer in this process is reduced from minutes to seconds and the overall footprint of the manufacturing process is decreased. Furthermore, this demonstrates the promising capabilities for intensed pulsed light to reduce manufacturing costs and paves a roadmap for scalable and efficient PSCs on a roll-to-roll platform.

Enhanced charge carrier extraction and transport with interface modification for efficient tin-based perovskite solar cells

Interface modification improves charge carrier extraction in tin-based perovskite solar cells. Tin-based perovskites have become the most promising non-lead perovskites due to their ideal band gap and low toxicity. Although the open circuit voltage of tin-based perovskite solar cells (TPSCs) continues to approach the theoretical value, the short-circuit current is still far from the theoretical value. Here, we describe an interface modification method by regulating the property of hole transport layer, PEDOT:PSS, which improves the surface molecular morphology and the energy level alignment of PEDOT:PSS/perovskite interface. Advanced GIWAXS and IR s-SNOM characterization are conducted to achieve multi-dimensional characterization of nanoscale surface morphology and chemical distribution of PEDOT:PSS. With the multi-attribute optimization, charge carrier extraction and non-radiative recombination are also improved. The resultant TPSCs exhibit a higher power conversion efficiency of 13.32% in compared with the control device of 10.50%, accompanied with an increase in the short-circuit current from 18.10 to 20.50 mA cm −2 and FF from 68.23% to 76.43%. This work demonstrates a reliable strategy for improving charge carrier extraction and device performance for lead-free TPSCs.

Octave-spanning terahertz quarter-wave plates based on over-coupled Fabry–Pérot resonances in reflective metal–dielectric–metal metasurfaces

Compact devices for broadband polarization control in the terahertz (THz) regime remain challenging to realize due to the intrinsic phase dispersion associated with birefringent materials and resonant structures. Here, we demonstrate achromatic THz quarter-wave plates with near-unity efficiency and operating under a wide range of incidence angles, based on over-coupled metal–dielectric–metal reflective metasurfaces. The devices operate as single-port anisotropic Fabry–Pérot cavities, in which the phase dispersion of the over-coupled resonances is engineered to maintain an approximately constant relative phase delay between orthogonal field components over a broad frequency range. Four complementary metasurface designs operating at an incidence angle of 45° collectively cover the 0.25–3 THz frequency range accessible to a typical THz time-domain spectroscopy system. Each device exhibits an approximately octave-wide operational bandwidth, with axial ratios below 3 dB and polarization-conversion efficiencies exceeding 80% across most of the operating band. Systematic structural optimization suppresses coupling to diffraction and guided-wave modes, thereby further extending the usable bandwidth while preserving the required phase relationship between orthogonal polarizations. The demonstrated metasurfaces are compatible with wafer-scale fabrication processes, and experimental results show excellent agreement with simulations. These findings establish over-coupled reflective metasurfaces as a robust, scalable, and versatile platform for broadband THz polarization control.

Strain-relaxed tetragonal MAPbI 3 results in efficient mesoporous solar cells

In mesoporous organo-halide perovskite solar cells, the coexistence of tetragonal phase and cubic phase in the perovskite layer is found to result in strained crystal structure at the mesoporous TiO 2 (mp-TiO 2 )/perovskite heterointerface. This results in structural defects pinholes, grain boundaries, and interfacial porosity which is detrimental towards photovoltaic performance and device stability. The strain at the interface originates from the lattice mismatch between the mp-TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) and perovskite. Here, a transformative approach is demonstrated to realize relaxed and high purity tetragonal phase MAPbI 3 (RP) near the mp-TiO 2 interface region. This approach involves inserting a ~2 nm lattice matched buffer layer of cubic CsPbBr 3 between mp-TiO 2 NPs and MAPbI 3 , which serves as a template for epitaxial growth for top MAPbI 3 . As a result, the solar cell with relaxed MAPbI3 shows a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.12% with significantly enhanced environmental, light, and thermal stability.

Bringing Inorganic Carbon to Life: Developing Model Metalloenzymes for C1 Conversion Reactions

The global carbon cycle is carefully balanced through the use of specialized enzymes in plants, algae, bacteria, and archaea. A primordial metabolic pathway for the conversion of inorganic carbon into cellular biomass uses a large, nickel-containing enzyme called carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH)/acetyl coenzyme A synthase (ACS). This system fixes carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into carbon monoxide (CO) at the CODH site. The carbon monoxide is then used to generate acetyl coenzyme A, a biological building block, through a key carbon-carbon bond forming step at the nickel site in ACS. Despite the significance of these processes in the context of energy conversion, the fundamental chemistry underlying these transformations has remained elusive, in part due to the complexity of the natural enzyme. To better understand the principles governing these biological processes, which represent one-carbon (C 1 ) activation reactions, this project will develop functional models of CODH and ACS based on modifications to a small metalloprotein scaffold. Comprehensive characterization of these systems using advanced spectroscopic and biophysical techniques will reveal key elements responsible for conferring high levels of activity to the model systems, with implications for gaining insight into the mechanisms of the natural enzymes. Moreover, the principles learned from this research can be used to guide design of robust catalysts for efficient conversion of CO 2 and CO into liquid fuels.

18.6% Efficiency All-Polymer Solar Cells Enabled by a Wide Bandgap Polymer Donor Based on Benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bisthiazole

The limited selection of wide bandgap polymer donors for all-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) is a bottleneck problem restricting their further development and remains poorly studied. In this work, a new wide bandgap polymer, namely PBBTz-Cl, is designed and synthesized by bridging the benzobisthiazole acceptor block and chlorinated benzodithiophene donor block with thiophene units for application as an electron donor in all-PSCs. PBBTz-Cl not only possesses wide bandgap and deep energy levels but also displays strong absorption, high-planar structure, and good crystallinity, making it a promising candidate for application as a polymer donor in organic solar cells. When paired with the narrow bandgap polymer acceptor PY-IT, a fibril-like morphology forms, which facilitates exciton dissociation and charge transport, contributing to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.15% of the corresponding all-PSCs. Moreover, when introducing another crystalline polymer acceptor BTP-2T2F into the PBBTz-Cl:PY-IT host blend, the absorption ditch in the range of 600–750 nm is filled, and the blend morphology is further optimized with the trap density reducing. As a result, the ternary blend all-PSCs achieve a significantly improved PCE of 18.60%, which is among the highest values for all-PSCs to date.

Y-Type Non-Fullerene Acceptors with Outer Branched Side Chains and Inner Cyclohexane Side Chains for 19.36% Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells

Raising the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level of Y-type non-fullerene acceptors can increase the open-circuit voltage (V oc ) and thus the photovoltaic performance of the current top performing polymer solar cells (PSCs). One of the viable routes is demonstrated by the successful Y6 derivative of L8-BO with the branched alkyl chains at the outer side. This will introduce steric hindrance and reduce intermolecular aggregation, thus open up the bandgap and raise the LUMO energy level. To take further advantages of the steric hindrance influence on optoelectronic properties of Y6 derivatives, two Y-type non-fullerene acceptors of BTP-Cy-4F and BTP-Cy-4Cl are designed and synthesized by adopting outer branched side chains and inner cyclohexane side chains. An outstanding V oc of 0.937 V is achieved in the D18:BTP-Cy-4F binary blend devices along with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.52%. With the addition of BTP-eC9 to extend the absorption spectral coverage, a remarkable PCE of 19.36% is realized finally in the related ternary blend devices, which is one of the highest values for single-junction PSCs at present. The results illustrate the great potential of cyclohexane side chains in constructing high-performance non-fullerene acceptors and their PSCs.

Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells Achieved via Rapid Photonic Annealing of all Stacking Layers: Unveiling the Crystallization Energy Window

In this study, we report high-performance perovksite solar cells (PSCs) with rapid photonic annealing (RPA) of all stacking layers, enabled by ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diode (LED) sources, to replace lengthy and energy-intensive thermal annealing (TA). The UV-LED annealing technique allows for layer-specific annealing, where the selected light source provides a precise UV wavelength for maximizing the amount of light absorption by the target layer. The disparity in optical absorption between the target layer and the underlying films allows the stack of the underlying films to remain relatively unaffected, making this process ideal for heating sensitive substrates. Along with a systematic investigation into the layer-specific annealing mechanism of RPA, the results demonstrated that this UV-LED-based photonic annealing of all stacking layers (7 s for perovskite absorber) can produce PSCs with the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 23%, the highest reported among optically annealed PSCs. Moreover, the RPA device retains over 80% of the initial PCE over 1000 h under continuous 1 sun illumination at 55 °C and 30%–60% relative humidity (RH), while TA control device drops to 50% of its initial efficiency. Furthermore, these findings represent significant strides toward achieving rapid, cost-effective, and scalable manufacturing of commercial perovskite photovoltaics (PV).

Startup regime of high-efficiency tapering-enhanced FEL oscillator

In this paper, we present a design of a high-efficiency high-gain free-electron laser oscillator based on the use of a strongly tapered undulator for extracting energy from high-brightness electron beams. We provide an analytical model of the setup followed by numerical simulations for lasing at the wavelength of 13.5 nm. We discuss the optimization of the system in steady state and the conditions necessary for the pass-per-pass buildup of the power from shot noise level. We propose the use of fast phase shifters as a way to accelerate the buildup. Finally, we present time-dependent simulations of the oscillator and discuss the role of spectral filtering. The optimized working point yields a total energy conversion efficiency from the electron beam to output radiation above 1% at the wavelength of 13.5 nm.

Simultaneous Enhancement of Efficiency And Operational-Stability of Mesoscopic Perovskite Solar Cells via Interfacial Toughening

The combined effects of compact TiO 2 (c-TiO 2 ) electron-transport layer (ETL) are investigated without and with mesoscopic TiO 2 (m-TiO 2 ) on top, and without and with an iodine-terminated silane self-assembled monolayer (SAM), on the mechanical behavior, opto–electronic properties, photovoltaic (PV) performance, and operational-stability of solar cells based on metal-halide perovskites (MHPs). The interfacial toughness increases almost threefold in going from c-TiO 2 without SAM to m-TiO 2 with SAM. This is attributed to the synergistic effect of the m-TiO 2 /MHP nanocomposite at the interface and the enhanced adhesion afforded by the iodine-terminated silane SAM. The combination of m-TiO 2 and SAM also offers a significant beneficial effect on the photocarriers extraction at the ETL/MHP interface, resulting in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 24% and 20% for 0.1 and 1 cm 2 active areas, respectively. These PSCs also have exceptionally long operational stability lives extrapolated T80 (duration at 80% initial PCE retained) is ≈18 000 and 10 000 h for 0.1 and 1 cm 2 active areas, respectively. In conclusion, postmortem characterization and analyses of the operational-stability-tested PSCs are performed to elucidate the possible mechanisms responsible for the long operational-stability.

Fine‐Tuning Alkyl Chains on Quinoxaline Nonfullerene Acceptors Enables High‐Efficiency Ternary Organic Solar Cells with Optimizing Molecular Stacking and Reducing Energy Loss

Abstract Material design of guest acceptor is always a big challenge for improving the efficiency of ternary organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, a pair of isomeric nonfullerene acceptors based on quinoxaline core, Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O and Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O, is designed and synthesized. By moving the alkoxy chain attached on side phenyl frommeta‐position topara‐position, both π–π stacking distance and crystallinity are enhanced simultaneously. They obtain the uplifted lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level. Compared to Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O, Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O exhibits wider absorption spectrum and higher extinction coefficient. Using D18‐Cl:N3 as host materials, the addition of guest acceptor Qx–p‐C 7 H 8 O significantly improves the power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 17.61% to 18.49% because of higher open‐circuit voltage (0.875 V) and short‐circuit current density (27.85 mA cm −2 ). This can be attributed to the faster exciton dissociation, more balanced carrier mobility, fine fiber morphology, and lower energy loss in the ternary devices. However, Qx–m‐C 7 H 8 O‐based ternary device achieves relatively low PCE of 17.17% because this device shows extremely low electron mobility. The results indicate that molecular stacking, film morphology, etc., can be effectively modulated by fine‐tuning the side chains of guest materials, which may be an effective design rule for further improving the PCE of OSCs.

Dual aggregation steering in bulk-heterojunction via solvent engineering toward efficient and stable binary organic solar cells

In high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs), efficient charge transport hinges on a well-optimized morphology of the photoactive layer, which depends critically on controlled aggregation and favorable interactions between donor and acceptor materials. In this work, we introduce a cascade solvent system comprising high-boiling-point ethylbenzene (EB) and low-boiling-point chloroform (CF) to finely tune the aggregation behavior of the D18 donor and L8-BO acceptor. The incorporation of EB not only promotes the H-aggregation of D18 and the J-aggregation of L8-BO but also facilitates the formation of ideal nanoscale phase separation, thereby suppressing bimolecular recombination. As a result, devices processed with the EB/CF solvent blend achieve a best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.6 % and enhanced operational stability, outperforming those fabricated with pure CF (17.1 %). In conclusion, this study offers a reliable and effective strategy for optimizing donor and acceptor aggregation, providing a viable pathway toward higher-performance OSCs.

A 3D nonfullerene electron acceptor with a 9,9'-bicarbazole backbone for high-efficiency organic solar cells

One-dimensional ladder-type nonfullerene electron acceptors (NFAs) with large fused ring cores have been typically used in highly efficient organic solar cells (OSCs). Prior studies have demonstrated that small molecule acceptors with three-dimensional (3D) structures may exhibit low energy loss, and hence can lead to improved OSC performance. In this study, a new 3D NFA ( 99CZ-8F ) with a 9,9'-bicarbazole backbone was designed, synthesized, and characterized, where two linear A-D-A architectures were linked by a single N–N bond. 99CZ-8F showed strong absorption in the range of 500–800 nm in the solid state, which is complementary to the absorption of the donor material PM6 . After regulating the morphology of the active layer via binary solvent mixture, the optimized device exhibited a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.6 ± 0.1%, which is among the best reported values for 3D nonfullerene electron acceptor based OSCs

Smartly Optimizing Crystallinity, Compatibility, and Morphology for Polymer Solar Cells by Small Molecule Acceptor with Unique 2D-EDOT Side Chain

A desired morphology is essential for achieving efficient polymer solar cells. Donors and acceptors with appropriate crystallization can lead to a suitable phase-separated morphology for effective photocurrent generation process. Inspired by the success of Y6 acceptors and the 2D side chain engineering on popular polymer donors and small molecule acceptors, the usage of unique 2D 3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene (EDOT) side chains on Y6 to regulate its crystallinity, compatibility, and thus the related blend morphology is explored. Here, in this study, two molecules of BTP-EDOT-4F and BTP-EDOT-4Cl with such unique 2D EDOT side chains are designed and synthesized. Due to the advantage of EDOT side chain, when these molecules are blended with PM6, the decent power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 16.78% and 15.87% are obtained. Furthermore, BTP-EDOT-4F is selected as the third component and added into PM6:L8-BO binary system to form ternary blends. The optimized crystallinity, compatibility, and morphology of such ternary blend are discovered in the presence of BTP-EDOT-4F, which enables efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport as well as decreased recombination, resulting in higher short circuit current density (J sc ) and fill factor. Finally, the outstanding PCE of 18.56% is achieved in ternary blends containing PM6, L8-BO, and BTP-EDOT-4F.

Effects of Copolymer Structure on Enzyme-Catalyzed Polyester Recycling

Polyesters are an omnipresent material used for a variety of applications (e.g., bottles, packaging, textile, windshield), roughly comprising 8% of plastics produced worldwide. Enzymatic recycling is an emerging solution to deal with the increasingly diverse polyesters that are not suitable for mechanical recycling. However, enzyme activity and efficiency are still the limiting factors impeding enzymatic recycling for different plastic waste forms. The effects of thermal and structural properties (e.g., glass transition temperature, crystallinity, specific surface area), which are determined by chemical composition and preprocessing, directly influence enzyme recycling efficiency. This work investigates two extrusion methods (single screw and twin-screw extrusion) to pretreat a range of copolyesters (RPET, PETG, Ecozen, Tritan and PBT) and modify their properties (i.e., glass transition temperature (T g ), crystallinity (%), and molecular weight (M n )). A PET-specific enzyme, leaf-branch compost cutinase (LCC ICCG ), produced from a fed-batch fermentation of Escherichia coli BL21(DE3), was used for the enzymatic depolymerization of different polyesters. Several copolyesters showed improved depolymerization after pretreatment, as measured by rate and amount of monomers produced. Furthermore, those that did not depolymerize were found to have exceptionally high glass transition temperature or percent crystallinity, highlighting the importance of these physical parameters on conversion efficiency.

In planta production of the nylon precursor beta-ketoadipate

Beta-ketoadipate (βKA) is an intermediate of the βKA pathway involved in the degradation of aromatic compounds in several bacteria and fungi. Beta-ketoadipate also represents a promising chemical for the manufacturing of performance-advantaged nylons. We established a strategy for the in planta synthesis of βKA via manipulation of the shikimate pathway and the expression of bacterial enzymes from the βKA pathway. Using Nicotiana benthamiana as a transient expression system, we demonstrated the efficient conversion of protocatechuate (PCA) to βKA when plastid-targeted bacterial-derived PCA 3,4-dioxygenase (PcaHG) and 3-carboxy-cis,cis-muconate cycloisomerase (PcaB) were co-expressed with 3-deoxy-D-arabinoheptulosonate 7-phosphate synthase (AroG) and 3-dehydroshikimate dehydratase (QsuB). This metabolic pathway was reconstituted in Arabidopsis by introducing a construct (pAtβKA) with stacked pcaG, pcaH, and pcaB genes into a PCA-overproducing genetic background that expresses AroG and QsuB (referred as QsuB-2). The resulting QsuB-2 x pAtβKA stable lines displayed βKA titers as high as 0.25 % on a dry weight basis in stems, along with a drastic reduction in lignin content and improvement of biomass saccharification efficiency compared to wild-type controls, and without any significant reduction in biomass yields. Using biomass sorghum as a potential crop for large-scale βKA production, techno-economic analysis indicated that βKA accumulated at titers of 0.25 % and 4 % on a dry weight basis could be competitively priced in the range of $2.04-34.49/kg and $0.47-2.12/kg, respectively, depending on the selling price of the residual biomass recovered after βKA extraction. This study lays the foundation for a more environmentally-friendly synthesis of βKA using plants as production hosts.

Work Function Tuning of a Weak Adhesion Homojunction for Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have demonstrated a comparable efficiency to Si-based cells. However, the buried interface with weak adhesion remains a critical issue since the ion migration enhanced by the built-in electric field at this interface might lead to instability. We report here that adjusting the energy-level alignment at the weak adhesion homojunction interface can mitigate ion migration and thereby enhance the stability and photovoltaic performance of PSCs. Functional molecules with self-assembled monolayer characteristics were introduced to the surface of the SnO2 layer using silane derivatives, which tuned the work function of the homojunction depending on the functional groups in the molecules and thereby significantly reduced the built-in electric field. The PSC exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.3%. The maximum power point (MPP) tracking under continuous illumination confirmed that the device retained more than 97% of its initial PCE, even after 1,000 h.

Electro-optic transduction in silicon via gigahertz-frequency nanomechanics

Interfacing electronics with optical fiber networks is key to the long-distance transfer of classical and quantum information. Piezo-optomechanical transducers enable such interfaces by using gigahertz-frequency acoustic vibrations as mediators for converting microwave photons to optical photons via the combination of optomechanical and piezoelectric interactions. However, despite successful demonstrations, efficient quantum transduction remains out of reach due to the challenges associated with hybrid material integration and increased loss from piezoelectric materials when operating in the quantum regime. Here, we demonstrate an alternative approach in which we actuate 5-GHz phonons in a conventional silicon-on-insulator platform. In our experiment, microwave photons resonantly drive a phononic crystal oscillator via the electrostatic force realized in a charge-biased narrow-gap capacitor. The mechanical vibrations are subsequently transferred via a phonon waveguide to an optomechanical cavity, where they transform into optical photons in the sideband of a pump laser field. Operating at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, we measure a microwave-to-optical photon conversion efficiency of 1.72±0.14×10 −7 in a 3.3 MHz bandwidth. Our results mark a stepping stone towards quantum transduction with integrated devices made from crystalline silicon, which promise efficient high-bandwidth operation and integration with superconducting qubits. Additionally, the lack of need for piezoelectricity or other intrinsic nonlinearities makes our approach applicable to a wide range of materials for potential applications beyond quantum technologies.
