Stability of nonuniform rotor blades in hover using a mixed formulation

A mixed formulation for calculating static equilibrium and stability eigenvalues of nonuniform rotor blades in hover is presented. The static equilibrium equations are nonlinear and are solved by an accurate and efficient collocation method. The linearized perturbation equations are solved by a one step, second order integration scheme. The numerical results correlate very well with published results from a nearly identical stability analysis based on a displacement formulation. Slight differences in the results are traced to terms in the equations that relate moments to derivatives of rotations. With the present ordering scheme, in which terms of the order of squares of rotations are neglected with respect to unity, it is not possible to achieve completely equivalent models based on mixed and displacement formulations. The one step methods reveal that a second order Taylor expansion is necessary to achieve good convergence for nonuniform rotating blades. Numerical results for a hypothetical nonuniform blade, including the nonlinear static equilibrium solution, were obtained with no more effort or computer time than that required for a uniform blade.

Detailed gravity anomalies from Geos 3 satellite altimetry data

Detailed gravity anomalies are computed from a combination of Geos 3 satellite altimeter and terrestrial gravity data using least-squares principles. The mathematical model used is based on the Stokes' equation modified for a nonglobal solution. Using Geos 3 data in the calibration area, the effects of several anomaly parameter configurations and data densities/distributions on the anomalies and their accuracy estimates are studied. The accuracy estimates for 1 deg x 1 deg mean anomalies from low density altimetry data are of the order of 4 mgal. Comparison of these anomalies with the terrestrial data and also with Rapp's data derived using collocation techniques show rms differences of 7.2 and 4.9 mgal, respectively. Indications are that the anomaly accuracies can be improved to about 2 mgal with high density data. Estimation of 30 in. x 30 in. mean anomalies indicates accuracies of the order of 5 mgal. Proper verification of these results will be possible only when accurate ground truth data become available.

Reformulation of Possio's kernel with application to unsteady wind tunnel interference

An efficient method for computing the Possio kernel has remained elusive up to the present time. In this paper the Possio is reformulated so that it can be computed accurately using existing high precision numerical quadrature techniques. Convergence to the correct values is demonstrated and optimization of the integration procedures is discussed. Since more general kernels such as those associated with unsteady flows in ventilated wind tunnels are analytic perturbations of the Possio free air kernel, a more accurate evaluation of their collocation matrices results with an exponential improvement in convergence. An application to predicting frequency response of an airfoil-trailing edge control system in a wind tunnel compared with that in free air is given showing strong interference effects.

Energy from wood waste - A case study

A joint study has been conducted by NASA and Army installations collocated in a dense forest in southwestern Mississippi in order to determine the technical and economic feasibility of using wood waste as a renewable energy source. The study has shown that, with proper forest management, the timber on government lands could eventually support the total energy requirements of 832 billion Btu/yr. Analysis of the current conversion technologies indicates that the direct combustion spreader stoker approach is the best demonstrated technology for this specific application. The economics of the individual powerplants reveal them as attractive alternatives to fossil fueled plants. Environmental aspects are also discussed.

Unsteady Subsonic Loadings Due to Control-Surface Motion

RHOIV computer program predicts unsteady lifting-surface loadings caused by motions of leading edge and trailing-edge control surfaces having sealed gaps at hinge lines and side edges. Analysis is based on linear, subsonic, potential-flow theory using kernel function method. Linear combinations of pressure distributions are used that are continuous except at planform edges and hinge lines. Loading solution is obtained by downwash collocation for deflection or motion of main wing and control surfaces.

Experimental compliance calibration of the compact fracture toughness specimen

Compliances and stress intensity coefficients were determined over crack length to width ratios from 0.1 to 0.8. Displacements were measured at the load points, load line, and crack mouth. Special fixturing was devised to permit accurate measurement of load point displacement. The results are in agreement with the currently used results of boundary collocation analyses. The errors which occur in stress intensity coefficients or specimen energy input determinations made from load line displacement measurements rather than from load point measurements are emphasized.

The stability of pseudospectral-Chebyshev methods

The pseudospectral-Chebyshev methods are shown to be convergent in variable coefficient problems and, in some cases, hyperbolic problems. The analysis demonstrates that the rate of convergence is greater for finite difference methods or the finite element method. For a single first-order hyperbolic equation, the method is seen as remaining stable even when the coefficient changes sign, although in this case it is specified that care must be taken to have adequate spatial resolution. It is noted that this fact, combined with the fact that collocation methods are easy to apply in the nonlinear case, shows that the pseudospectral method is in general preferable to the Galerkin or Tau methods.

A class of stable, robust feedback controllers for large space structures

A two-level control system design is considered for large space structures, which consists of a primary and a secondary controller. The secondary or damping enhancement controller is shown to be stable and robust, even when time-invariant nonlinearities are present in the actuators and/or sensors. The use of Annular Momentum Control Devices (AMCD's) is also considered for secondary control. The primary attitude controller using collocated torque actuators and attitude and rate sensors is stable and robust. The effect of actuator/sensor dynamics on the stability of the primary and secondary controllers is considered. The AMCD's used for secondary control actuation can also be used for the primary controller.

The state of the atmosphere as inferred from the FGGE satellite observing systems during SOP-1

The statistical properties, and coverage, of satellite temperature sounding data are described. Tropical regions are observed every two days, extratropics from one to four times a day. Oceans are covered two to three times a day. Asynoptic coverage is comparable to the U.S. rawinsonde network twice daily coverage. Lack of ground truth for data sparse areas makes accuracy difficult to assess. The rms differences of layer mean temperatures obtained from collocating rawinsonde observations with satellite temperature profiles in space and time differ from rms differences of layer mean satellite temperature soundings. The FGGE satellite systems can infer the three dimensional motion field and improve the representation of the large scale state of the atmosphere.

Edge delamination in angle-ply composite laminates, part 5

A theoretical method was developed for describing the edge delamination stress intensity characteristics in angle-ply composite laminates. The method is based on the theory of anisotropic elasticity. The edge delamination problem is formulated using Lekhnitskii's complex-variable stress potentials and an especially developed eigenfunction expansion method. The method predicts exact orders of the three-dimensional stress singularity in a delamination crack tip region. With the aid of boundary collocation, the method predicts the complete stress and displacement fields in a finite-dimensional, delaminated composite. Fracture mechanics parameters such as the mixed-mode stress intensity factors and associated energy release rates for edge delamination can be calculated explicity. Solutions are obtained for edge delaminated (theta/-theta theta/-theta) angle-ply composites under uniform axial extension. Effects of delamination lengths, fiber orientations, lamination and geometric variables are studied.

Reduction of computer usage costs in predicting unsteady aerodynamic loadings caused by control surface motions: Computer program description

A digital computer program was developed to calculate unsteady loadings caused by motions of lifting surfaces with leading edge and trailing edge controls based on the subsonic kernel function approach. The pressure singularities at hinge line and side edges were extracted analytically as a preliminary step to solving the integral equation of collocation. The program calculates generalized aerodynamic forces for user supplied deflection modes. Optional intermediate output includes pressure at an array of points, and sectional generalized forces. From one to six controls on the half span can be accomodated.

Improved global prediction of 300 nautical mile mean free air anomalies

Current procedures used for the global prediction of 300nm mean anomalies starting from known values of 1 deg by 1 deg mean anomalies yield unreasonable prediction results when applied to 300nm blocks which have a rapidly varying gravity anomaly field and which contain relatively few observed 60nm blocks. Improvement of overall 300nm anomaly prediction is first achieved by using area-weighted as opposed to unweighted averaging of the 25 generated 60nm mean anomalies inside the 300nm block. Then, improvement of prediction over rough 300nm blocks is realized through the use of fully known 1 deg by 1 deg mean elevations, taking advantage of the correlation that locally exists between 60nm mean anomalies and 60nm mean elevations inside the 300nm block. An improved prediction model which adapts itself to the roughness of the local anomaly field is found to be the model of Least Squares Collocation with systematic parameters, the systematic parameter being the slope b which is a type of Bouguer slope expressing the correlation that locally exists between 60nm mean anomalies and 60nm mean elevations.

Attitude and vibration control of a large flexible space-based antenna

The problem of control systems synthesis is considered for controlling the rigid body attitude and elastic motion of a large deployable space based antenna. Two methods for control systems synthesis are considered. The first method utilizes the stability and robustness properties of the controller consisting of torque actuators and collocated attitude and rate sensors. The second method is based on the linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control theory. A combination of the two methods, which results in a two level hierarchical control system, is also briefly discussed. The performance of the controllers is analyzed by computing the variances of pointing errors, feed misalignment errors and surface contour errors in the presence of sensor and actuator noise.

Stress-intensity factors and crack-opening displacements for round compact specimens

An improved method of boundary collocation based on the complex variable analysis of Muskhelishvili (1953) is applied to the two-dimensional stress analysis of round compact specimens with pin-loaded holes. Stress intensity factors and crack opening displacements are calculated for various round compact specimens as a function of crack-length-to-specimen-width ratios. A wide-range equation for the stress intensity factors and equations for crack-surface displacements and load-point displacements are developed.

Discrete-time stability of continuous-time controller designs for large space structures

In most of the stable control designs for flexible structures, continuous time is assumed. However, in view of the implementation of the controllers by on-line digital computers, the discrete-time stability of such controllers is an important consideration. In the case of direct-velocity feedback (DVFB), involving negative feedback from collocated force actuators and velocity sensors, it is not immediately apparent how much delay due to digital implementation of DVFB can be tolerated without loss of stability. The present investigation is concerned with such questions. A study is conducted of the discrete-time stability of DVFB, taking into account an employment of Euler's method of approximation of the time derivative. The obtained result gives an indication of the acceptable time-step size for stable digital implementation of DVFB. A result derived in connection with the consideration of the discrete-time stability of stable continuous-time systems provides a general condition under which digital implementation of such a system will remain stable.

Incompressible Navier-Stokes and parabolized Navier-Stokes solution procedures and computational techniques

Recent developments with finite-difference techniques are emphasized. The quotation marks reflect the fact that any finite discretization procedure can be included in this category. Many so-called finite element collocation and galerkin methods can be reproduced by appropriate forms of the differential equations and discretization formulas. Many of the difficulties encountered in early Navier-Stokes calculations were inherent not only in the choice of the different equations (accuracy), but also in the method of solution or choice of algorithm (convergence and stability, in the manner in which the dependent variables or discretized equations are related (coupling), in the manner that boundary conditions are applied, in the manner that the coordinate mesh is specified (grid generation), and finally, in recognizing that for many high Reynolds number flows not all contributions to the Navier-Stokes equations are necessarily of equal importance (parabolization, preferred direction, pressure interaction, asymptotic and mathematical character). It is these elements that are reviewed. Several Navier-Stokes and parabolized Navier-Stokes formulations are also presented.
