Mid-infrared chiral metasurface absorbers with split-ellipse structures

Natural chiral materials usually have very weak circular dichroism (CD) responses. Here, in this study, we design and demonstrate one type of mid-infrared chiral metasurface absorber with strong chiroptical effects, which can achieve high CD in absorption above 0.57 over the wavelength range of 5 to 5.9 μm. The maximum absorption of the chiral metasurface absorber under circularly polarized light can reach 0.90 and the maximum CD in absorption is 0.63. Meanwhile, the chiral resonance wavelength and the CD value can be tuned by varying the geometric parameters of the metasurface. A thermal analysis of the metasurface absorber further shows the strong connection between CD in absorption and temperature difference. The demonstrated chiral metasurface absorbers can be used in many promising applications such as molecular sensing, thermophotovoltaics and chiral spectroscopy.

Origin of Large Effective Phonon Magnetic Moments in Monolayer MoS 2

Recent helicity-resolved magneto-Raman spectroscopy measurement demonstrates large effective phonon magnetic moments of ~2.5 μ B in monolayer MoS 2 , highlighting resonant excitation of bright excitons as a feasible route to activate Γ-point circularly polarized phonons in transition metal dichalcogenides. However, a microscopic picture of this intriguing phenomenon remains lacking. In this work, we show that an orbital transition between the split conduction bands (Δ 0 = 4 meV) of MoS 2 couples to the doubly degenerate E" phonon mode (Ω 0 = 33 meV), forming two hybridized states. Our phononic and electronic Raman scattering measurements capture these two states: (i) one with predominantly phonon contribution in the helicity-switched channels and (ii) one with primarily orbital contribution in the helicity-conserved channels. An orbital-phonon coupling model successfully reproduces the large effective magnetic moments of the circularly polarized phonons and explains their thermodynamic properties. Strikingly, the Raman mode from the orbital transition is superimposed on a strong quasi-elastic scattering background, indicating the presence of spin fluctuations. As a result, the electrons excited to the conduction bands through the exciton exhibit paramagnetic behavior although MoS 2 is generally considered as a nonmagnetic material. By depositing nanometer-thickness nickel thin films on monolayer MoS 2 , we tune the electronic structure so that the A exciton perfectly overlaps with the 633 nm laser. The optimization of resonance excitation leads to pronounced tunability of the orbital-phonon hybridized states. Our results generalize the orbital-phonon coupling model of effective phonon magnetic moments to material systems beyond the paramagnets and magnets.

Low-temperature MnBi alloys: Electronic and magnetic properties, constitution, morphology and fabrication (Review article)

The article reviews the rich phenomena of physical properties of MnBi. The diverse phenomena include strong spin-orbit interaction, anomalous temperature dependence of the coercivity and the magneto-crystalline anisotropy field, unique magneto-optical properties. Issues addressed include the nature of the electronic ground states of MnBi, the electronic and magnetic structures, Fermi surface, magneto-crystalline anisotropy, x-ray magnetic dichroism. The discussion includes key experiments, such as optical and magneto-optical spectroscopic measurements, de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements, x-ray photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements as well as x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The effect of the spin-orbit (SO) interaction and Coulomb repulsion U were found to be crucial for the Fermi surface, cyclotron masses, magneto-optical properties, and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The microscopic origin of unique magneto-crystalline anisotropy and giant Kerr effect in MnBi is analyzed in detail. The huge Kerr effect in MnBi is caused by the combination of a sizable magnetic moment on manganese, the large spin-orbit coupling of bismuth, and a strong hybridization between the manganese 3d and the bismuth 6p states. The magneto-optically active states are mainly the 6p states of Bi. We show that the observed temperature dependence of the magneto-crystalline anisotropy can be explained taking into account the spin-orbit interaction together with strong Coulomb electron-electron interaction. The SO coupling of Bi is equally responsible for the large magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy as is the exchange splitting of Mn. The fabrication, morphology, and constitution of low-temperature MnBi alloys in bulk, thin films, and nanoparticles are discussed. The nanocomposite permanent magnetic materials based on MnBi, (Co, Fe) and Nd 2 Fe 14 B are also discussed.

Bulk and element-specific magnetism of medium-entropy and high-entropy Cantor-Wu alloys

Magnetic Compton scattering, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy, and bulk magnetometry measurements are performed on a set of medium- (NiFeCo and NiFeCoCr) and high-entropy (NiFeCoCrPd and NiFeCoCrMn) Cantor-Wu alloys. The bulk spin momentum densities determined by magnetic Compton scattering are remarkably isotropic, and this is a consequence of the smearing of the electronic structure by disorder scattering of the electron quasiparticles. Nonzero x-ray magnetic circular dichroism signals are observed for every element in every alloy indicating differences in the populations of the majority and minority spin states implying finite magnetic moments. When Cr is included in the solid solution, the Cr spin moment is unambiguously antiparallel to the total magnetic moment, while a vanishingly small magnetic moment is observed for Mn, despite calculations indicating a large moment. Some significant discrepancies are observed between the experimental bulk and surface magnetic moments. Furthermore, despite the lack of quantitative agreement, the element-specific surface magnetic moments seem to be qualitatively reasonable.

3D imaging of magnetic domains in Nd 2 Fe 14 B using scanning hard X-ray nanotomography

Nanoscale structural and electronic heterogeneities are prevalent in condensed matter physics. Investigating these heterogeneities in 3D has become an important task for understanding material properties. To provide a tool to unravel the connection between nanoscale heterogeneity and macroscopic emergent properties in magnetic materials, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) is combined with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. A vector tomography algorithm has been developed to reconstruct the full 3D magnetic vector field without any prior noise assumptions or knowledge about the sample. Two tomographic scans around the vertical axis are acquired on single-crystalline Nd 2 Fe 14 B pillars tilted at two different angles, with 2D STXM projections recorded using a focused 120 nm X-ray beam with left and right circular polarization. Image alignment and iterative registration have been implemented based on the 2D STXM projections for the two tilts. Dichroic projections obtained from difference images are used for the tomographic reconstruction to obtain the 3D magnetization distribution at the nanoscale.

Perspectives on future research directions in green manufacturing for discrete products

With the increasing concern due to climate change caused by a higher atmospheric concentration of CO 2 and other greenhouse gases, reducing environmental impact is becoming more important for every part of society. Manufacturing is responsible for a significant amount of energy/material consumption and environmental burden and, therefore, has a great opportunity to reduce its impact through green manufacturing. Green manufacturing presents opportunities across the manufacturing enterprise to increase the efficient usage of energy and material resources. These opportunities include designing products to consume fewer materials and energy during manufacturing and use, incorporating more efficient manufacturing processes, streamlining and optimizing manufacturing schedules and plans, and circularizing products. The goal of this paper will be to provide a perspective from the authors on the opportunities that exist within green manufacturing for discrete products through a review of pertinent topics and future directions. The paper will focus on processes, manufacturing equipment, manufacturing systems, recovering value at a product’s end-of-life, and additional thoughts that include metrics and indicators, techno-economic assessment, and a discussion of efficiency and effectiveness. Key findings from this review include a need for social indicators and renewable energy considerations in scheduling and process planning, integrating Industry 4.0 into circular economy along with social and institutional dimensions, consistency in the ability to measure and conceptualize metrics and indicators, a detailed evaluation of the life cycle impacts and cost of Addit Manuf, and more human and environment-oriented considerations for smart manufacturing.

A Comparative Analysis of Waste-as-a-Feedstock Accounting Methods in Life Cycle Assessments

Global waste generation is a ubiquitous challenge, driving a paradigm shift towards viewing waste as a valuable resource for a circular economy across diverse sectors. While innovative waste-to-resource pathways are crucial, rigorous Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is essential to ensure the pathways are an important part of current practices. However, LCA application to waste valorization varies, leading to incomparable results due to differing methodological choices. This paper examines three key nuances in waste-as-resource LCAs: the zero-burden assumption, the biogenic carbon neutrality assumption, and the benchmark assumption for emissions avoidance. Using a waste gasification to hydrogen case study, we demonstrate how these methodological decisions impact LCA outcomes. Our findings reveal that waste composition significantly influences the results and highlight challenges associated with biogenic carbon accounting under various system boundary assumptions. Emissions avoidance accounting requires multi-functional unit perspectives and robust benchmark selection. This paper clarifies these accounting approaches, empirically illustrates their influence, and discusses broad implications for accurate sustainability assessment, emphasizing the critical role of transparent LCA choices for effective policy and investment in circular economy solutions.

Regulatory and Policy Considerations for the Reuse and End-of-Life Management of Solar and Batteries in the U.S.

The demand for solar photovoltaics (PV) and lithium-ion batteries (LIB) is expected to continue in the U.S. as the call for solar is projected to quadruple by 2030 to meet renewable energy and decarbonization goals. The expected demand for PV and LIB brings supply chain concerns and a growing need for a circular economy for PV and LIB materials. Domestic reuse and recycling is one potential circular economy solution for PV and LIB. This presentation explores the current U.S. law and regulatory landscape for the reuse and recycling of PV and LIB materials, and how certain policy frameworks impact reuse and end-of-life management decisions for PV and LIB materials.

Analysis as a Key Guiding Tool for Waste Carbon Utilization

Over a billion metric tons of waste and biomass are projected to be available in a future mature market in the United States. These resources represent an opportunity to decouple chemical and polymer production from conventional fossil fuel feedstocks, but such a broad solution space can also make for challenging decision-making. This talk will provide researchers with an introduction to key analysis techniques such as techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, and material flow analysis: how they are conducted and how they can be used to benchmark the costs, environmental impacts, and circularity of new innovations as well as to identify opportunities for prioritization and optimization. Using a series of examples related to plastic recycling and chemical manufacturing, we will explore how analysis can guide where and how to leverage waste carbon in supply chains towards a future circular economy.

Dark Exciton in 2D Hybrid Halide Perovskite Films Revealed by Magneto-Photoluminescence at High Magnetic Field

Here, a comprehensive study of the exciton fine structure (EFS) is presented in 2D-phenethylammonium lead iodide films using magnetic field-induced polarization of photoluminescence (PL) in both Faraday and Voigt configurations at fields up to 25 Tesla. Three exciton bands are identified in the PL spectrum associated with bound, dark, and bright excitons, respectively. Under a high magnetic field in Faraday/Voigt configuration, large field-induced circular/linear polarization is observed in the PL band related to the dark exciton, which is magnetically activated. Furthermore, it is found that the dark exciton has an anomalous field-induced circular polarization, which cannot be explained by the classical Boltzmann distribution of spin-polarized species. These findings are well explained by an effective mass model that includes exchange terms unique to the monoclinic symmetry as a perturbation of the EFS in the approximate tetragonal symmetry. It is also confirmed that the field-induced linear polarization is sensitive to the monoclinic exchange term, whereas the field-induced circular polarization is immune to such term.

Enhancing Chiroptoelectronic Activity in Chiral 2D Perovskites via Chiral–Achiral Cation Mixing

Rational design of chiral two-dimensional hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites is crucial to achieve chiroptoelecronic, spintronic, and ferroelectric applications. Here, in this study, an efficient way to manipulate the chiroptoelectronic activity of 2D lead iodide perovskites is reported by forming mixed chiral (R- or S-methylbenzylammonium (R-MBA + or S-MBA + )) and achiral (n-butylammonium (nBA + )) cations in the organic layer. The strongest and flipped circular dichroism signals are observed in (R/S-MBA 0.5 nBA 0.5 ) 2 PbI 4 films compared to (R/S-MBA) 2 PbI 4 . Moreover, the (R/S-MBA 0.5 nBA 0.5 ) 2 PbI 4 films exhibit pseudo-symmetric, unchanged circularly polarized photoluminescence peak as temperature increases. First-principles calculations reveal that mixed chiral–achiral cations enhance the asymmetric hydrogen-bonding interaction between the organic and inorganic layers, causing more structural distortion, thus, larger spin-polarized band-splitting than pure chiral cations. Temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function structure studies show the compressed intralayer lattice with enlarged interlayer spacing and increased local ordering. Overall, this work demonstrates a new method to tune chiral and chiroptoelectronic properties and reveals their atomic scale structural origins.

Self‐Assembly of Helical Nanofibrous Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks

Abstract Despite significant progress on the design and synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), precise control over microstructures of such materials remains challenging. Herein, two chiral COFs with well‐defined one‐handed double‐helical nanofibrous morphologies were constructed via an unprecedented template‐free method, capitalizing on the diastereoselective formation of aminal linkages. Detailed time‐dependent experiments reveal the spontaneous transformation of initial rod‐like aggregates into the double‐helical microstructures. We have further demonstrated that the helical chirality and circular dichroism signal can be facilely inversed by simply adjusting the amount of acetic acid during synthesis. Moreover, by transferring chirality to achiral fluorescent molecular adsorbents, the helical COF nanostructures can effectively induce circularly polarized luminescence with the highest luminescent asymmetric factor ( g lum ) up to ≈0.01.

Dual Recycling of Depolymerization Catalyst and Biodegradable Polyester that Markedly Outperforms Polyolefins

Abstract Chemically recyclable, circular polymers continue to attract increasing attention, but rendering both catalysts for depolymerization and high‐performance polymers recyclable is a more sustainable yet challenging goal. Here we introduce a dual catalyst/polymer recycling system in that recyclable inorganic phosphomolybdic acid catalyzes selective depolymerization of high‐ceiling‐temperature biodegradable poly(δ‐valerolactone) in bulk phase, which, upon reaching suitable molecular weight, exhibits outstanding mechanical performance with a high tensile strength of ≈66.6 MPa, fracture strain of ≈904 %, and toughness of ≈308 MJ m −3 , and thus markedly outperforms commodity polyolefins, recovering its monomer in pure state and quantitative yield at only 100 °C. In sharp contrast, the uncatalyzed depolymerization not only requires a high temperature of >310 °C but is also low yielding and non‐selective. Importantly, the recovered monomer can be repolymerized as is to reproduce the same polymer, thereby closing the circular loop, and the recycled catalyst can be reused repeatedly for depolymerization runs without loss of its catalytic activity and efficiency.

Chiral Teropyrenes: Synthesis, Structure, and Spectroscopic Studies

Abstract We present the inaugural synthesis of a chiral teropyrene achieved through a four‐fold alkyne benzannulation catalyzed by InCl 3 , resulting in good yields. The product underwent thorough characterization using FT‐Raman and FT‐IR spectroscopies, demonstrating a close agreement with calculated spectra. X‐ray crystallographic analysis unveiled a notable twist in the molecule‘s backbone, with an end‐to‐end twist angle of 51°, consistent with computational predictions. Experimentally determined enantiomeric inversion barriers revealed a significant energy barrier of 23 kcal/mol, facilitating the isolation of enantiomers for analysis by circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) spectroscopies. These findings mark significant strides in the synthesis and characterization of chiral teropyrenes, offering insights into their structural and spectroscopic properties.
