Mutual coupling between circular waveguide-fed apertures in a rectangular ground plane

A method is presented whereby the infinite ground plane analytical model for the self-admittance and mutual admittance of waveguide-fed apertures can be supplemented (using the geometrical theory of diffraction) to include the edge effects of a rectangular ground plane. The H-plane coupling between two TE-11 mode excited circular apertures is calculated and compared with measurements.

Nonlinear propagation of a wave packet in a hard-walled circular duct

The method of multiple scales is used to derive a nonlinear Schroedinger equation for the temporal and spatial modulation of the amplitudes and the phases of waves propagating in a hard-walled circular duct. This equation is used to show that monochromatic waves are stable and to determine the amplitude dependance of the cutoff frequencies.

Interaction between a circular inclusion and an arbitrarily oriented crack

The plane interaction problem for a circular elastic inclusion embedded in an elastic matrix which contains an arbitrarily oriented crack is considered. Using the existing solutions for the edge dislocations as Green's functions, first the general problem of a through crack in the form of an arbitrary smooth arc located in the matrix in the vicinity of the inclusion is formulated. The integral equations for the line crack are then obtained as a system of singular integral equations with simple Cauchy kernels. The singular behavior of the stresses around the crack tips is examined and the expressions for the stress-intensity factors representing the strength of the stress singularities are obtained in terms of the asymptotic values of the density functions of the integral equations. The problem is solved for various typical crack orientations and the corresponding stress-intensity factors are given.

Flush-mounted dielectric-loaded axial slot on circular cylinder

An investigation is conducted of electric field patterns of a TE axial slot antenna which radiates through a dielectric window in a circular cylinder. The cylinder is partially coated with a dielectric layer. The investigation is to provide information regarding the effects of a high-temperature dielectric layer on the performance of antennas mounted on a space shuttle. Numerical results are presented for the far-field patterns. It is pointed out that the calculations show excellent agreement with experimental measurements.

Laser tuners using circular piezoelectric benders

The paper presents the results of an experimental evaluation of a new type of piezoelectric ceramic device designed for use as a laser mirror tuner. Thin plates made from various materials were assembled into a circular bimorph configuration and tested for linearity of movement, maximum travel, and resonant frequency for varying conditions of clamping torque and mirror loading values. Most of the devices tested could accept mirror diameters up to approximately 1.3 cm and maintain a resonant frequency above 2 kHz. Typical mirror translation without measurable tilt was plus or minus 20 micrometers or greater for applied voltages of less than plus or minus 300 V.

Elastic-plastic analysis of an infinite sheet having a circular hole under pressure

An exact elastic-plastic solution for the stresses in an infinite sheet having a circular hole subject to pressure is obtained on the basis of J2 deformation theory together with a modified Ramberg-Osgood law. The sheet is orthotropic but isotropic in its plane. The results are assessed on the basis of Budiansky's criterion for the acceptability of J2 deformation theory. By using exact elastic-plastic stresses, the function connecting the pressure at the hole with the radial enlargement is obtained. Upon release of the pressure, residual stresses around the hole are produced.

Interplanetary spacecraft design using solar electric propulsion - A circular 1.0 AU out-of-the-ecliptic mission

A preliminary study has been conducted to investigate the utility of solar electric propelled spacecraft for delivering a scientific payload to high heliographic latitudes to study cosmic rays, the sun, and its influence on environments within our solar system. The mission is considered a candidate for launch in the early 1980's by both the United States and Europe and has the potential of becoming a cooperative space venture. A brief description of the science objectives, mission design and spacecraft design is presented for a circular 1.0 AU heliocentric orbit and a 15 kW solar electric propulsion module. Particular emphasis is placed upon the performance available from this approach.

Uniform magnetic fields generated by circular current-carrying coils

The study described was carried out to evaluate known systems of circular coils with a view toward their application on board the space probes Ranger 1, Ranger 2, and Explorer 10. Particular attention is given to a new method, developed during the investigation, for determining the constants of systems composed of 6 to 8 coils. Such systems were found to generate magnetic fields of very high uniformity. By using advanced computational techniques, it proved possible to evaluate the field uniformity of various systems without recourse to complex analytical methods. Means of evaluating the influence of coil dimensions on the uniformity of the field of any system are described.

Pressure Distribution at Subsonic Speeds over the Forepart of Two Blunt Circular Cylinders

A wind tunnel investigation was made at subsonic speeds to determine the pressure distribution over the forward part of a circular cylinder. The cylinder was equipped with interchangeable faces, one having a flat face and one having a dome shaped face. The investigation was made over angle of attack range from -1 deg to 26 deg and a Mach number range from 0.30 to 0.89. Pressure coefficients are presented in tabular form and plotted data are presented for some selected angles of attack about the surface of the cylinder.

A Theoretical and Experimental Study of Acoustic Propagation in Multisectioned Circular Ducts

The propagation of plane waves and higher order acoustic modes in a circular multisectioned duct was studied. A unique source array consisting of two concentric rings of sources, providing phase and amplitude control in the radial, as well as circumferential direction, was developed to generate plane waves and both spinning and nonspinning higher order modes. Measurements of attenuation and radial mode shapes were taken with finite length liners inserted between the hard wall sections of an anechoically terminated duct. Materials tested as liners included a glass fiber material and both sintered fiber metals and perforated sheet metals with a honeycomb backing. The fundamental acoustic properties of these materials were studied with emphasis on the attenuation of sound by the liners and the determination of local versus extended reaction behavior for the boundary condition. A search technique was developed to find the complex eigenvalues for a liner under the assumption of a locally reacting boundary condition.

The experimental results were compared with a mathematical model for the multisectioned duct.

Normal Impingement of a Circular Liquid Jet onto a Screen in a Weightless Environment

The normal impingement of a circular liquid jet onto a fine-mesh screen in a weightless environment was investigated. Equations were developed to predict the velocity of the emerging jet on the downstream side of the screen as a function of screen and liquid parameters and of the velocity of the impinging jet. Additionally, the stability of the emerging jet was found to be Weber number dependent. In general, excepting at high velocities, the screen behaved much as a baffle, deflecting the major portion of the impinging flow.

Optimal rendezvous in the neighborhood of a circular orbit

The minimum velocity change rendezvous solutions, when the motion may be linearized about a circular orbit, fall into two separate regions; the phase-for-free region and the general region. Phase-for-free solutions are derived from the optimum transfer solutions, require the same velocity change expenditure, but may not be unique. Analytic solutions are presented in two of the three subregions. An algorithm is presented for determining the unique solutions in the general region. Various sources of initial conditions are discussed and three examples presented.

Influence of a circular hole under uniform normal pressure on the stresses around a line crack in an infinite plate

Based on the two dimensional theory of elasticity and by the use of Muskhelishvili's technique, the influence of a circular hole, under uniform normal pressure, on the stresses around a line crack in an infinite plate subjected to tension is discussed. Numerical calculations were carried out, and the variation of the crack tip stress intensity factor due to the geometry was clarified.
