Method and apparatus for preparing multiconductor cable with flat conductors

A method and apparatus for preparing flat conductor cable having a plurality of ribbon-like conductors disposed upon and adhesively bonded to the surface of a substrate is described. The conductors are brought into contact with the substrate surface, and while maintained in axial tension on said substrate, the combination is seated on a yieldably compressible layer to permit the conductor to become embedded into the surface of the substrate film.

Faster Test for Cable Seals

Vacuum-assisted immersion test is much faster than conventional atmospheric immersion tests of cable seals. Vacuum speeds removal of air, allowing its replacement by conductive salt solution in leaking specimens. Previously, 24-hour immersion was necessary to assure displacement of trapped air. Improved method takes only 10 minutes.

The design, fabrication and installation of cable routing mockups in support of Spacelab 2

From flight and mockup drawings of Spacelab 2 (SL 2) experiments and hardware, shop ready mockup drawings were produced. Floor panels were the first items considered for fabrication. Cold plate and orthogrid mockups were designed and fabricated. Experiment and other hardware mockups were fabricated of aluminum or plywood, depending on size and configuration. Eighty-three cable routing bracket mockups were fabricated of aluminum and delivered for painting.

High voltage cabling for high power spacecraft

Studies by NASA have shown that many of the space missions proposed for the time period 1980 to 2000 will require large spacecraft structures to be assembled in orbit. Large antennas and power systems up to 2.5 MW size are predicted to supply the electrical/electronic subsystems, solar electric subsystems, solar electric propulsion, and space processing for the near-term programs. Platforms of 100 meters/length for stable foundations, utility stations, and supports for these multi-antenna and electronic powered mechanisms are also being considered. This paper includes the findings of an analytic and conceptual design study for large spacecraft power distribution, and electrical loads and their influence on the cable and connector requirements for these proposed large spacecraft.

Finite element thermal-structural analyses of a cable-stiffened orbiting antenna

Finite element thermal-structural analyses of a cable-stiffened orbiting antenna are presented. The determination of prestresses in the antenna is described first. Heating and thermal analyses for orbiting space structures are then discussed briefly. Structural deformations and stresses are presented for three finite element structural analysis approaches: (1) small deflections, (2) stress-stiffening, and (3) large deflections. The accuracy of the three analysis approaches is evaluated for the orbiting antenna at different prestress levels.

Tester for Multiple-Conductor Cables

Portable testing circuit enables technician to determine quickly wiring errors in multiple-conductor electrical cable or terminal connectors. Active unit tester made of inexpensive integrated circuits and other readily available components. Timer and one-shot generate pulses counted by shift registers. Shift-register output terminals wired to connector pins so voltage applied to each pin in sequence.

Hanging Windmills From Cables

Relatively inexpensive structure enables raising and lowering of windmills. Windmills supported, according to new concept, by hanging from cables. Possible to raise and lower windmills easily for maintenance and to lower them to avoid excessive windspeeds. Airframe consists of fuselage and empennage. Windmill turns shaft driving electrical generator. Device aerodynamically stable so it will rotate in yaw to maintain windmill in downwind position as wind direction changes.

Flexible Ceramic-Insulated Cable

Cable withstands heat, radiation, and oxidation. Ceramic beads electrically insulate copper conductor from sheath of copper tape. Also suitable for furnaces, nuclear reactors, and robots operating in hot, radioactive environments.

Cable applications in robot compliant devices

Robotic systems need compliance to connect the robot to the work object. The cable system illustrated offers compliance for mating but can be changed in space to become quite stiff. Thus the same system can do both tasks, even in environments where the work object or robot are moving at different frequencies and different amplitudes. The adjustment can be made in all six degrees of freedom, translated in or rotated in any plane and still make a good contact and control.

Development of cable drive systems for an automated assembly project

In a robotic assembly project, a method was needed to accurately position a robot and a structure which the robot was to assemble. The requirements for high precision and relatively long travel distances dictated the use of cable drive systems. The design of the mechanisms used in translating the robot and in rotating the assembly under construction is discussed. The design criteria are discussed, and the effect of particular requirements on the design is noted. Finally, the measured performance of the completed mechanism is compared with design requirements.

Cable delay compensator for microwave signal distribution over optical fibers

The basic principles of microwave fiber-optic systems are outlined with emphasis on fiber-optic cable delay compensators (CDC). Degradation of frequency and phase stability is considered, and it is pointed out that the long-term stability of a fiber-optic link is degraded by group delay variations due to temperature fluctuations in the optical fiber and low-frequency noise characteristics of the laser. A CDC employing a voltage-controlled oscillator to correct for phase variations in the optical fiber is presented, and the static as well as dynamic closed-loop analyses of the fiber-optic CDC are discussed. A constructed narrow-band fiber-optic CDC is shown to reduce phase variations caused by temperature fluctuations by a factor of 400. A wide-band CDC utilizing a temperature-controlled coil of fiber to compensate for phase delay is also proposed.

The climbing crawling robot (a unique cable robot for space and Earth)

Some of the greatest concerns in robotic designs have been the high center of gravity of the robot, the irregular or flat surface that the robot has to work on, the weight of the robot that has to handle heavy weights or use heavy forces, and the ability of the robot to climb straight up in the air. This climbing crawling robot handles these problems well with magnets, suction cups, or actuators. The cables give body to the robot and it performs very similar to a caterpillar. The computer program is simple and inexpensive as is the robot. One of the important features of this system is that the robot can work in pairs or triplets to handle jobs that would be extremely difficult for single robots. The light weight of the robot allows it to handle quite heavy weights. The number of feet give the robot many roots where a simple set of feet would give it trouble.

The critical velocity of a body towed by a cable from an airplane

It is sufficient to consider only the equations of motion of the towed body whereas those of the cable may be left out of consideration. The result obtained makes it possible to determine which factors affect the critical velocity and what modifications of the instrument are necessary for extending the upper limit of that velocity.

Layout and cabling considerations for a large communications antenna array

Layout considerations for a large deep space communications antenna array are discussed. A fractal geometry for the antenna layout is described that provides optimal packing of antenna elements, efficient cable routing, and logical division of the array into identical sub-arrays.
