($\mathrm{INVITED}$)Counter-ion effect on the diffusion behavior of $\mathrm{Y}$b, $\mathrm{L}$u, and $\mathrm{N}$d ions in $\mathrm{YAG}$ transparent ceramics

The ability to fabricate additively manufactured laser waveguides with sharp dopant concentration interfaces is limited by diffusion of the dopants at the temperatures required to fully densify the material. Compositional analysis of bilayer samples, where each layer was either undoped YAG or YAG doped with Yb, Lu, or Nd, were fabricated such that all combinations were available for testing. Samples were fabricated at both 1750°C and 1850°C to determine the diffusion behavior of each dopant alone and also in the presence of a second dopant. It was found that the experimental concentration profiles exhibited both intragranular (bulk) and grain boundary contributions, and thus fitting to a complementary error function equation required the use of two diffusion coefficients. Nd always diffused further along grain boundaries than the other dopants, due in part to its small segregation coefficient in YAG. It is shown that the presence of Nd as a counter dopant inhibits intragranular diffusion of other dopants while enhancing their grain boundary diffusion. All the observed trends were attributed to a combination of intragranular lattice strain due to: dopant ions replacing yttrium substitutionally, the relative driving forces for the segregation of dopant ions to grain boundaries, and the ability of one dopant to affect the diffusion of a different dopant in the other direction to maintain charge neutrality.

Search for Higgs boson decays into Z and J/ψ and for Higgs and Z boson decays into J/ψ or Y pairs in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV

Decays of the Higgs boson into a z boson and a J/ψ or ψ(2S) meson are searched for in four-lepton final states with the CMS detector at the LHC. A data set of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 is used. Using the same data set, decays of the Higgs and z boson into quarkonium pairs are also searched for. An observation of such decays with this sample would indicate the presence of physics beyond the standard model. No evidence for these decays has been observed and upper limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the corresponding branching fractions ($\mathscr{B}$). Assuming longitudinal polarization of the Higgs boson decay products, 95% confidence level observed upper limits for $\mathcal{B}$(H→ZJ/ψ) and $\mathcal{B}$(H→Zψ(2S)) are 1.9 X 10 -3 and 6.6 X 10 -3 , respectively.

Bond valence sum analysis of pyrochlore oxides including the novel dielectric Te 6+ pyrochlores: A Bi M TeO 7-y ( A = Cd, Ca; M = Cr, Ga, Sc, In, Fe)

Bond valence sum analysis is a powerful tool used in evaluating and validating crystal structures; especially when those structures are complex in nature. The pyrochlore structure type is versatile in not only the unique bonding that it exhibits, but also in the properties that results from the structure. Here this paper aims to center the discussion of evaluating the pyrochlore structure using the bond valence sum method. In this study, novel quaternary pyrochlores with a general stoichiometry of ABiMTeO 7 (A = Cd, Ca; M = Cr, Ga, Sc, In, Fe) were synthesized and characterized for their structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties. Two representative compounds within this series of pyrochlores, BiCaFeTeO7 and BiCdFeTeO 7 , were structurally characterized utilizing a combination of high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction revealing oxygen deficient pyrochlore systems which were off from the expected stoichiometry with respect to the M site. The A site of both pyrochlores were found to be moved off-center from the expected 16d site to the 96h displaced position at a magnitude of 0.25 Å and 0.22 Å for the Bi/Ca and Bi/Cd systems, respectively. These structures were evaluated using the bond valence sum method and compared with trends in the literature. The properties are also reported for the Bi/Ca system for the first time, showing relatively high dielectric constants with a low dielectric loss which are primarily independent of frequency and temperature. The magnetic measurements for the Bi/Ca system for the magnetic substitutions reveal a paramagnet and antiferromagnetic properties for the Fe and Cr analogs, respectively. The novel BiCaMTeO 7 quaternary pyrochlore system shows great promise as an emerging dielectric material.

Effect of Nanoscale Ce 0.8 Gd 0.2 O 2–δ Infiltrant and Steam Content on Ni–(Y 2 O 3 ) 0.08 (ZrO 2 ) 0.92 Fuel Electrode Degradation during High-Temperature Electrolysis

Studies of Ni–yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) fuel electrode degradation mechanisms in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) are complicated by the different possible Ni–YSZ microstructures and compositions, and the variations in the H 2 /H 2 O ratio encountered in an electrolysis stack. Here, in this study, we describe a life testing scheme aimed at providing survey results on degradation as a function of the H 2 O–H 2 composition, with life tests carried out at five different steam contents from 90% to 10%. A Ni–YSZ-supported symmetric cell geometry is employed both with and without infiltrated nanoscale gadolinia-doped ceria (GDC). Impedance spectroscopy is utilized to observe changes in electrochemical characteristics during the life test, and a transmission-line-based equivalent circuit is used to model the data. Post-test electrode microstructures were observed. The results suggest that the GDC infiltrant reduces the electrode polarization resistance and provides more stable electrode polarization over a range of conditions.
