Uranium and thorium in achondrites.

The abundances of U and Th in 19 achondrites and two pallasite olivines have been measured by radiochemical neutron activation analysis. Brecciated eucrites are enriched relative to chondrites in both elements by factors between 10 and 20, perhaps as a result of a magmatic differentiation process. Two unbrecciated eucrites are far less enriched, possibly due to their origin as igneous cumulates. The diogenites Johnstown and Shalka contain approximately chondritic levels of U and Th, but Ellemeet is 10 times lower. The abundances in three howardites are in good agreement with those expected from major element data for a mixing model with eucrite and diogenite end members. The high O-18 basaltic achondrites Nakhla, Shergotty and Angra dos Reis have a range of U and Th abundances similar to the brecciated eucrites and howardites, but have systematically higher Th/U ratios.

Survey of aircraft subcritical flight flutter testing methods

The results of a survey of U. S., British and French subcritical aircraft flight flutter testing methods are presented and evaluation of the applicability of these methods to the testing of the space shuttle are discussed. Ten U. S. aircraft programs covering the large civil transport aircraft and a variety of military aircraft are reviewed. In addition, three major French and British programs are covered by the survey. The significant differences between the U. S., French and British practices in the areas of methods of excitation, data acquisition, transmission and analysis are reviewed. The effect of integrating the digital computer into the flight flutter test program is discussed. Significant saving in analysis and flight test time are shown to result from the use of special digital computer routines and digital filters.

A general description of Loran-C: Present and potential applications

Loran-C is a low frequency (100 kHz) pulse navigation system. The pulse format and phase stability of the system are of paramount importance for both navigation and time synchronization using this system. Present Loran-C installations operated by the U. S. Coast Guard cover much of the northern hemisphere. A recent government-wide decision has declared that Loran-C will be the U. S. Coastal confluence navigation system for the immediate future. Therefore, Loran-C stations are presently being installed or planned to cover the entire U. S. coastline.

A numerical comparison of discrete Kalman filtering algorithms: An orbit determination case study

The numerical stability and accuracy of various Kalman filter algorithms are thoroughly studied. Numerical results and conclusions are based on a realistic planetary approach orbit determination study. The case study results of this report highlight the numerical instability of the conventional and stabilized Kalman algorithms. Numerical errors associated with these algorithms can be so large as to obscure important mismodeling effects and thus give misleading estimates of filter accuracy. The positive result of this study is that the Bierman-Thornton U-D covariance factorization algorithm is computationally efficient, with CPU costs that differ negligibly from the conventional Kalman costs. In addition, accuracy of the U-D filter using single-precision arithmetic consistently matches the double-precision reference results. Numerical stability of the U-D filter is further demonstrated by its insensitivity of variations in the a priori statistics.

Combined optical and X-ray observations of variable stars

Questions concerning the optical identification of X-ray sources are considered. There are now a total of eight optically identified galactic X-ray sources. Of these eight, five are definitely established as binaries. The nature of the other three sources remains unknown. Studies of U Geminorum conducted on the basis of optical and X-ray observations are also discussed. From the upper limit to the accretion rate for U Gem obtained with the aid of soft X-ray data, it is seen that most of the mass flow in U Gem is lost from the system.

Callan-Symanzik equation in Bronzan-Lee model

Considering the renormalized U-particle propagator of the Bronzan-Lee (1965) model as a function of energy, the Callan-Symanzik (1970) equations are derived for various amplitudes. The varied parameters include the renormalized U-particle mass and the renormalized U-V-theta coupling constant. Following Adler's (1972) technique, the Gell-Mann-Low (1954) equation is derived for vanishing V-, N- and theta-particle masses. This leads to a consistency relation that is valid for high energy. Consequences of the consistency relation are discussed.

Magnetic moments of charmed baryons. I, II

The magnetic moments of all charmed baryons belonging to the totally symmetric 20 (underlined) representation, the mixed symmetry 20 prime (underlined) and the totally antisymmetric 4 (underlined) representation have been compared under U(4) symmetry, assuming that the magnetic-moment operator is proportional to the charge operator. The magnetic moments of all charmed particles have been expressed in terms of the moments of proton, neutron and delta particles in the case of U(4) symmetry. Then assuming that the magnetic moment operator is a tensor transforming as the (15,3) members of a 63 (underlined) representation of U(8) or SU(8), the magnetic moments of all the baryons belonging to the 120 (underlined) representation are compared.

The period-pulse-width distribution of pulsars and their division into three classes

The period-pulse-width (P-W) distribution of sample of 41 pulsars has been reanalyzed under two versions of a model where radiation is beamed from magnetic polar caps which are isotropically oriented with respect to the rotation axis of the neutron stars (IOPC models). It is found that neither IOPC model can explain the P-W distribution of the entire sample. Pulsars with simple unimodal (U) or complicated multimodal (M) pulse shapes show significantly different P-W distributions. Class M pulsars have a narrower P-W distribution than do class U pulsars and, taken separately, are compatible with either IOPC model. Class U pulsars divide into two subgroups, those with relatively narrower pulses (UN) and those with relatively wider pulses (UW), each of which is compatible with either IOPC model. One interpretation of these results is that the pulsars in classes UN, M, and UW have different intrinsic beam sizes, roughly in the ratios 1:2:4, respectively. The possible origins of the three classes are discussed in terms of the force-balance magnetosphere model (Roberts et al., 1972, 1973), where the differences may be attributed to different-mass neutron stars and the structure of the polar caps. An alternative interpretation is that the angle between the rotation and emission axes is not isotropically distributed, but can take only certain preferred values.

The case for an unfractionated Pu-244/U-238 ratio in high-temperature condensates

The coarse-grained, Ca-rich inclusions in the Allende meteorite are the highest-temperature condensates from the cooling solar nebula and, as such, the oldest solid objects in the solar system. All refractory elements with condensation points above the accretion temperature of the inclusions whose concentrations in them have been measured are seen to be present in the inclusions in unfractionated proportion to one another relative to Cl chondrites when data are averaged for a large number of inclusions. Observational data for U and theoretical data for both U and Pu suggest that these elements exhibited refractory behavior in the solar nebula. An experiment is proposed in which fissiogenic Xe and U contents are measured in a suite of these inclusions to obtain the Pu-244/U-238 ratio of the solar system at the time of initial condensation with an uncertainty of plus or minus 15%.

The development of large diameter, high pressure, cryogenic radial static seals

Two configurations of radial static seals are developed for high-pressure 773 kg per sq cm cryogenic applications: a U-shaped fluorocarbon seal and a delta-shaped PTFE seal. The U-seal is a common commercial design consisting of a spring-loaded cup-shaped jacket; the basic principle is that the soft plastic jacket provides the interface between the piston and the bore, the jacket being held in place by a metal spring. The delta seal is based on the principle that the soft plastic delta cross section furnishes the interface at the metal face and circumferential face of the gland and cylinder. Test results indicate that both the plastic U-seal and the delta seal designs are sufficiently flexible to accommodate assembly in bore or piston grooves. Of these two configurations, the delta seal is found to be superior as it meets all the design requirements for proof pressure testing the turbopump components of the main engine in the Space Shuttle.

Thorium-uranium fission radiography

Results are described for studies designed to develop routine methods for in-situ measurement of the abundance of Th and U on a microscale in heterogeneous samples, especially rocks, using the secondary high-energy neutron flux developed when the 650 MeV proton beam of an accelerator is stopped in a 42 x 42 cm diam Cu cylinder. Irradiations were performed at three different locations in a rabbit tube in the beam stop area, and thick metal foils of Bi, Th, and natural U as well as polished silicate glasses of known U and Th contents were used as targets and were placed in contact with mica which served as a fission track detector. In many cases both bare and Cd-covered detectors were exposed. The exposed mica samples were etched in 48% HF and the fission tracks counted by conventional transmitted light microscopy. Relative fission cross sections are examined, along with absolute Th track production rates, interaction tracks, and a comparison of measured and calculated fission rates. The practicality of fast neutron radiography revealed by experiments to data is discussed primarily for Th/U measurements, and mixtures of other fissionable nuclei are briefly considered.

Numerical comparison of Kalman filter algorithms - Orbit determination case study

Numerical characteristics of various Kalman filter algorithms are illustrated with a realistic orbit determination study. The case study of this paper highlights the numerical deficiencies of the conventional and stabilized Kalman algorithms. Computational errors associated with these algorithms are found to be so large as to obscure important mismodeling effects and thus cause misleading estimates of filter accuracy. The positive result of this study is that the U-D covariance factorization algorithm has excellent numerical properties and is computationally efficient, having CPU costs that differ negligibly from the conventional Kalman costs. Accuracies of the U-D filter using single precision arithmetic consistently match the double precision reference results. Numerical stability of the U-D filter is further demonstrated by its insensitivity to variations in the a priori statistics.

Differentiation of the matter of the moon

The following facts were uncovered in comparing the basaltic surface rocks of the moon with terrestrial tholeiitic basalts and ordinary chondrites: (1) there is an excess of the so-called refractory chemical elements, including the group of truly refractory elements, the rare earths, U, and Th, in comparison with their content in primitive terrestrial basalts and chondrites; (2) the so-called siderophilic elements have lower contents in the lunar surface rocks than in terrestrial rocks; (3) the low alkali content (Na, K, Rb) in lunar rocks is established; (4) there is a low content of H2O and the ordinary gases CO2, halides, etc.; (5) the low content of metals with high vapor pressure, (In, Tl, etc.) has been established. It is proposed that U and Th were carried from the internal areas to the peripheral rocks of the moon during magmatic activity, i.e., up to 3 billion years ago. This redistribution of U and Th lead to their concentration in surface layers of the moon, and the heat which they generated was lost into surrounding space. The conclusion is then reached that in order to understand processes on the moon, the chondritic model cannot be used.

The development of the Poincare-similar elements with true anomaly as the independent variable

In reference 1, the Hamiltonian of the unperturbed two-body problem in extended phase space is established. Depending on the type of time transformation, eight canonical elements were developed with the true anomaly or the eccentric anomaly as the independent variable. These two new sets, DS(phi) and DS(u), however contain singularities for small eccentricities and inclinations. In reference 2, these singularities are removed by a transformation from DS(u) to eight canonical PS(u) elements. In reference 3, the DS(phi) variables are transformed to the PS(phi) elements to remove the singularities. However, no direct relation was established between the eight canonical PS(phi) elements and the Cartesian coordinates. It is the purpose of this report to establish those relations and to develop the perturbed equations of motion in the PS(phi) space. This report also demonstrates the accuracy of this new set when it is applied to numerical orbit prediction problems.

Pb loss from Apollo 17 glassy samples and Apollo 16 revisited

U-Th-Pb analyses of bulk samples of soil breccia 70019, when compared to KREEP data, indicate that different lunar samples are sometimes characterized by distinctly different initial Pb isotopic compositions. U-Th-Pb analyses on nonglassy samples and a glassy separate of soil breccia 70019, and bulk and agglutinate samples of soil 72701 showed that the glassy samples did lose considerable Pb relative to U less than 200 million years ago. These data support the contention of other investigators that vaporization of volatile elements owing to impact events significantly alters the chemistry of the lunar regolith. Metaclastic rock 60315 was reanalyzed and was found to be concordant at 3.93 billion years rather than slightly discordant, as was previously reported.

Photometric study of the X-ray pulsar 4U 1626-67

Results are reported for UBVR photometric observations of the optical candidate for the pulsating X-ray source 4U 1626-67. The data are found to be consistent with a constant V magnitude of approximately 19.00 and marginally consistent with constant B-V and U-B colors, but two averaged measures obtained about 2 hr apart suggest that the B-V and U-B colors are variable and that this variability may be entirely in U and B. Additional evidence for variability of the optical candidate is examined, and it is shown that the optical object is probably variable with a B amplitude of no more than about 0.5 mag and time scales as short as less than the order of 1 min. A power spectrum analysis reveals no significant peaks at or near the X-ray pulse period of 7.68 sec or its harmonics. It is concluded that although the optical data do not provide any additional evidence that 4U 1626-67 is a binary, a short-period binary system with the optical emission strongly dominated by an accretion disk is probably favored.

Chemical and structural studies of 'Brownlee' particles

Several techniques were applied to the study of small particles (around 10 microns) collected in the upper atmosphere by U-2 aircraft. The major element chemistry of roughly 1/3 of the particles is similar to that of chondritic meteorites, although considerable variation of element ratios is observed from particle to particle, and even within a given particle. All particles of 'chondritic' composition are polycrystalline aggregates. About half have fully re-entrant structures; the remaining ones have more compact structures ranging from platey to spherical morphologies. Micro-crystallites with various internal structures are observed in the size range from less than 100 A to several microns. Although tracks are clearly observed in transmission electron microscope examination of terrestrial analog crystals, no tracks of solar flare origin have yet been identified in the U-2 particles. Induced fission track analysis of one aggregate shows that the U concentration is less than 15 ppbm, lending support to the extraterrestrial origin hypothesis.
