Sequence-Structure–Property Relationships in Short-Chain Polyesters: How Primary Structure Governs Macroscopic Performance

While polymer properties are fundamentally linked to their nanostructure, the influence of monomer sequence remains less understood than stereochemical factors like tacticity. This study examines how sequence distribution affects the thermal behavior and morphology of homo- and copolyesters, specifically comparing polymers derived from constitutionally identical monomers but with varying degrees of sequence regularity depending on monomer structure or polymerization selectivity. Our findings show that increasing sequence defects progressively diminish thermal stability, crystallinity, melting temperatures, and morphological order. As new materials become more compositionally complex, this work underscores the importance of sequence control in the design of advanced polymers for emerging applications.

Disordered, Sub-Nanometer Ru Structures on CeO 2 are Highly Efficient and Selective Catalysts in Polymer Upcycling by Hydrogenolysis

We report non-degradable polyolefin plastics pose severe environmental threats, and thus demand efficient upcycling technologies. In this work, we discovered that low-loading (= 0.25 wt%) Ru/CeO 2 exhibits remarkable catalytic performance in the hydrogenolysis of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and n-C 16 H 34 that is superior to high-loading (= 0.5 wt%) Ru/CeO 2 . They possess high PP conversion efficiency (7-fold increase over current literature reports), low selectivity towards undesired CH 4 , and good isomerization ability. In the low-loading range, the intrinsic activity of Ru in PP hydrogenolysis increases as the particle size decreases, opposite of the trend in the high-loading range. Detailed characterization revealed that the abrupt changes in catalytic behaviors coincide with Ru species transitioning from well-defined to highly disordered structures in the low-loading domain. The disordered Ru species were shown to be sub-nanometer in size and cationic. Mechanistically, the regioselectivity and the rate dependence on hydrogen pressure of C-C bond cleavage are different on low- and high-loading Ru/CeO 2 , both explained by the higher coverage of adsorbed hydrogen (*H) on low-loading Ru/CeO 2 . This work uncovers the remarkable catalytic performance of highly disordered, sub-nanometer, cationic Ru species in polyolefin hydrogenolysis, opening immense opportunities to develop effective, selective, and versatile catalysts for plastic upcycling.

Tuning the Solvation Structure in Aqueous Zinc Batteries to Maximize Zn-Ion Intercalation and Optimize Dendrite-Free Zinc Plating

Aqueous zinc batteries are recognized to suffer from H + /Zn 2+ coinsertion in the cathode, but few approaches have been reported to suppress deleterious H + intercalation. We realize this goal by tuning the solvation structure, using LiV 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (LVP) as a model cathode. Phase conversion of LVP induced by H + intercalation is observed in 4 m Zn(OTf) 2 , whereas dominant Zn 2+ insertion is confirmed in a ZnCl 2 water-in-salt electrolyte (WiSE). This disparity is ascribed to the complete absence of free water and a strong Zn 2+ –H 2 O interaction in the latter that interrupts the H 2 O hydrogen bonding network, thus suppressing H + intercalation. On the basis of this strategy, a novel PEG-based hybrid electrolyte is designed to replace the corrosive ZnCl2 WiSE. This system exhibits an optimized Zn 2+ solvation sheath with a similar low free water content, showing not only much better suppression of H + intercalation but also highly reversible Zn plating/stripping with a CE of ~99.7% over 150 cycles.

Magnetic and structural properties of the solid solution CuAl 2(1–x) Ga 2x O 4

CuAl 2 O 4 is a ternary oxide spinel with Cu 2+ ions (s = 1/2) primarily populating the A-site diamond sublattice. The compound is reported to display evidence of spin glass behavior but possess a non-frozen magnetic ground state below the transition temperature. On the other hand, the spinel CuGa 2 O 4 displays spin glass behavior at ~ 2.5 K with Cu 2+ ions more readily tending to the B-site pyrochlore sublattice. Therefore, we investigate the magnetic and structural properties of the solid solution CuAl 2(1-x) Ga 2x O 4 examining the evolution of the magnetic behavior as Al 3+ is replaced with a much larger Ga 3+ ion. Our results show that the Cu 2+ ions tend to migrate from tetrahedral to octahedral sites as the Ga 3+ ion concentration increases, resulting in a concomitant change in the glassy magnetic properties of the solution. Results indicate glassy behavior for much of the solution with a general trend towards decreasing magnetic frustration as the Cu 2+ ion shifts to the B-site. However, the x = 0.1 and 0.2 members of the system do not show glassy behavior down to our measurement limit (1.9 K) suggesting a delayed spin glass transition. We suggest that these two members are additional candidates for investigation to access highly frustrated exotic quantum states.

Structural disorder, sublattice melting, and thermo-elastic properties of anti-perovskite Li 3 OBr under high pressure and temperature

Here, in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments were conducted in the system Li-O-Br at pressures up to 6.5 GPa and temperatures up to the melting points. The thermal equation of state determined from the P–V–T measurements indicates that crystalline anti-perovskite Li 3 OBr exhibits similar thermo-elastic properties to common salts. At temperatures that are 50–75 °C below the crystal melting, a pre-melting behavior was inferred based on weakened Bragg intensity and a substantial increase in the diffuse scattering. Concurrent with the onset of pre-melting, an anomalous increase in the lattice volume was observed and is interpreted as anion sublattice disorder. These findings support previous ab initio molecular dynamics simulations based on a simple anion interchange mechanism, indicating that structural disorder below crystal melting temperature can be a main driving force for Li-sublattice melting and superionic transition in the Li 3 OBr anti-perovskite.
