Structure of current sheets in magnetic holes at 1 AU

Current density profiles in several types of interplanetary magnetic holes have been calculated using high-resolution Imp 6 magnetic field data (12.5 vector measurements/s), assuming that the currents flow in planar sheets and that the magnetic field varies only in the direction normal to the sheet. The planarity was verified in four holes which were observed by two suitably spaced spacecraft. Four types of simple magnetic holes are discussed, in which B varies nearly monotonically on each side of the hole. In two of the holes, B varies in intensity but not in direction as a result of currents normal to B. In the other two holes, B changes in both magnitude and direction as a result of currents both normal and parallel to B. The observed structures are found to be qualitatively consistent with the models of Burlaga and Lemaire (1978). Examples of complex irregular magnetic holes are also presented, and they are shown to contain multiple current sheets in which currents flow parallel to one another at various angles with respect to B. There is no model of such magnetic holes at present.

A two dimensional analysis of sheet resistance and contact resistance effects in solar cells

A computer model is developed to study the two-dimensional nature of the sheet resistance and contact resistance effects in solar cells. A major result is the demonstration that the distributed nature of the semiconductor sheet resistance causes the terminal dark I-V characteristics to exhibit an exp(qV/2kT) type dependence even when the one-dimensional characteristics of the cell exhibit an exp(qV/kT) type voltage dependence. The analytical model which is developed provides an easy method for estimating the sheet resistance of a solar cell from the terminal I-V data.

Radial deformation of the solar current sheet as a cause of geomagnetic storms

It is suggested that the solar current sheet, extending from a coronal streamer, develops a large-scale radial deformation, at times with a very steep gradient at the earth's distance. The associated magnetic field lines (namely, the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) lines) are expected to have also a large gradient in the vicinity of the current sheet. It is also suggested that some of the major geomagnetic storms occur when the earth is located in the region where IMF field lines have a large dip angle with respect to the ecliptic plane for an extended period (6-48 h), as a result of a steep radial deformation of the current sheet.

Origin of the warped heliospheric current sheet

The warped heliospheric current sheet for early 1976 is calculated from the observed photospheric magnetic field by a potential field method. Comparisons with measurements of the interplanetary magnetic field polarity for early 1976 obtained at several locations in the heliosphere by Helios 1, Helios 2, Pioneer 11, and at the earth show a rather detailed agreement between the computed current sheet and the observations. It appears that the large-scale structure of the warped heliospheric current sheet is determined by the structure of the photospheric magnetic field and that 'ballerina skirt' effects may add small scale ripples.

A semi-analytic approach to the self induced motion of vortex sheets

The rolling up of the trailing vortex sheet produced by a wing of finite span was calculated as a series expansion in time. For a vorticity distribution corresponding to a wing with cusped tips, the shape of the sheet was found by summing the series using Pade approximants. The sheet remains analytic for some time but ultimately develops an exponential spiral at the tips. The centroid of vorticity was conserved to high accuracy.

Multiple crossings of a very thin plasma sheet in the Earth's magnetotail

High resolution magnetic field, plasma and energetic particle data from the IMP-8 spacecraft were studied for multiple crossings of the Earth's magnetotail plasma sheet when it becomes thin during magnetospheric substorms. Traversals recur on a time scale of several minutes and they are associated with high velocity plasma flows that are usually directed tailward but are occasionally directed earthward for brief intervals. Observations are explained by rapid oscillations of a plasma sheet that is only a few thousand km thick, a dimension comparable to the gyroradius of energetic protons. Differences in the angular distributions of the two energies indicate that the higher energy protons are preferentially located on field lines deeper in the tail lobe. A neutral line acceleration model is supported tailward streaming energetic electrons which are occasionally present at the lobe plasma sheet interface.

Magnetohydrodynamic shock propagation in the vicinity of a magnetic neutral sheet

This paper reports a numerical investigation of the propagation of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) shocks in the vicinity of magnetic neutral sheets. The attenuation of a shock after passing through a neutral sheet has been evaluated (assuming infinite electrical conductivity). In a parameter study, values of shock speed, polytropic index, plasma beta, and neutral-sheet thickness which are representative of solar coronal conditions have been examined. If solar cosmic rays are accelerated in association with a flare-induced shock (as seems most likely), then our results suggest that the spatial structure of solar particle sources will be influenced by helmet streamers. Such streamers are most readily detectable by H alpha filaments in the underlying chromosphere.

Energetic ion composition of the plasma sheet

Data obtained from the energetic ion mass spectrometer experiment on Isee 1 in the distant plasma sheet are presented. These data show that (1) the plasma sheet has a significant and variable ionospheric component (H(+) and O(+)) representing from 10% to more than 50% of the total number density and (2) there is more than one process responsible for the energization of solar wind plasma (H(+) and He(++)) to plasma sheet energies.

Evaluation and optimization of silicon sheet solar cells

This paper describes the results and procedures to evaluate and improve the efficiency of solar cells made from various unconventional silicon sheets. The performance parameters included photovoltaic characteristics, spectral response, dark I-V characteristics, and diffusion length. The evaluation techniques used provided accurate and reliable information on sheet performance, and self-consistent results were obtained from the various measurement techniques used. Minority carrier diffusion length (L) was shown to be the ultimate limiting factor for the sheet cell performance (efficiency) and other back-up measurements confirmed this L-dependence. Limited efforts were made to identify defects which influence cell performance, and to use some improved process methods to increase cell efficiency.

Energetic ion and electron observations of the geomagnetic plasma sheet boundary layer - Three-dimensional results from ISEE 1

A description of energetic ion and electron behavior in the geomagnetic plasma sheet boundary layer is presented based on observations made by the medium-energy particle experiment on board ISEE 1. Three-dimensional observations of ions of energies 24-2081 keV and electrons of energies 22.5-1200 keV were obtained by the NOAA/WAPS instrument near the center of the magnetotail at a distance of approximately 15 earth radii. Large-scale motions of plasma sheet energetic particles are observed as an apparent result of a series of magnetospheric disturbances (substorms), which are characterized by substantial contractions and expansions. Ion flow velocity in a distinct boundary layer in energetic ions has been found to be in the earthward direction in each of the five ISEE 1 boundary crossings. Boundary layer motion during one of these crossings is interpreted as large-amplitude boundary waves with periodicities of a few minutes superimposed on the general plasma sheet behavior associated with the substorm process.

What causes the warp in the heliospheric current sheet

A comparative discussion of the warp in the heliospheric current sheet is presented. Pioneer 10 and 11 data of the interplanetary magnetic field compared with earlier data (Helios 1 and 2) show a good agreement on the phenomenon of the warp; however, the interpretations differ. One theory (Thomas and Smith, 1980) proposes that fast solar wind streams associated with interaction regions may move the current sheet higher to heliospheric latitudes, thus causing the warp; while the earlier theory (1976) adequately explained the phenomenon by using the observed photospheric magnetic field and the Zeeman effect but omitted the solar wind dynamical considerations as part of the computations. It is shown that the Helios data of the polarity of the interplanetary magnetic field are in good agreement with the computed location of the current sheet, confirming the earlier theory.

The orientation and motion of the predawn current sheet and Jupiter's magnetotail

From the observed times when Pioneer 10 and Voyager 1 observe particle flux maxima and minima and when the magnetic field strength is at minimum a geometric description of the current sheet in Jupiter's magnetosphere is derived. It lags the planetary rotation by an angle delta which varies as a function of radial distance as delta equals 22 deg + 0.80 (r - 16.3). The maximum latitude of the current sheet is roughly 10 deg inside of 60 Jovian radii and decreases beyond. Thus there is a hinge point near 60 Jovian radii. The position of the hinge point moves in response to the external solar wind pressure variation. The variation of delta(r) is discussed theoretically and how it is related to the magnetic field topology and plasma flow is shown. It is concluded that the distant field lines do not corotate with Jupiter and that the Alfven speed at 50 Jovian radii is of the order of 1500 km/s. The topology of the current sheet is affected by centrifugal forces, outward mass transport and solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. It is shown how these effects can be related to different current systems.

Progress toward goals in silicon sheet development

One of the goals of the national photovoltaic program in the U.S. is the establishment of an industry producing photovoltaic material which can be sold at a price not exceeding $0.70/W by 1986. A key element concerning the achievement of this goal is the development and utilization of improved methods for producing silicon sheet. Specific technologies being investigated in this connection can be divided into two categories. Methods of one category are based on a utilization of sheet growth techniques including film-fed growth, dendritic web, and silicon-on-ceramic processes. The approaches used by methods of the second category involve ingot and wafering processes, including Czochralski growth, the heat exchanger method, multiblade procedures, and the use of a fixed abrasive multiwire. It is found that using $84/kg silicon, most sheet technologies would yield module prices in the $2.00/Wp to $3.00/Wp range.

Improved performance from solar cells made from candidate sheet silicon materials

Performance of solar cells made from various candidate silicon sheets is updated and the results are presented. Solar cells were fabricated using a baseline process and other process variations, and tested under AM1 conditions. Performance of the baseline solar cells indicates that remarkable improvements in material quality have been achieved for most of the sheets, showing efficiencies close to that of the control cells made from conventional CZ silicon. Process variations (or additions), in general, have resulted in significant improvements in all performance with a degree of change dependent on the process chosen and to a certain extent the sheet quality.
