BIRP - A way to search through image engineering data

Several hundred thousand images have been returned by planetary missions and by earth-orbiting satellites. Locating specific images for study based on engineering data can be cumbersome and time consuming if done manually. BIRP, a FORTRAN program for small computers, is designed to quickly search through catalogs of image engineering data. A description of the desired images is entered and the BIRP program finds the images meeting the requirements. A videodisk player or microfiche reader may be controlled by BIRP so that images can be viewed immediately after a search. A search through 50,000 images on a single parameter takes less than 1 min on a minicomputer. Data for each parameter is stored in a separate file so that the number of files and thus the storage space required may be varied to fit computers with different storage capacities. Most modern minicomputers with FORTRAN compilers and an 8-bit byte variable type may use BIRP with minor modifications to the program.

A search for Earth-crossing asteroids, supplement

The ground based electro-optical deep space surveillance program involves a network of computer controlled 40 inch 1m telescopes equipped with large format, low light level, television cameras of the intensified silicon diode array type which is to replace the Baker-Nunn photographic camera system for artificial satellite tracking. A prototype observatory was constructed where distant artificial satellites are discriminated from stars in real time on the basis of the satellites' proper motion. Hardware was modified and the technique was used to observe and search for minor planets. Asteroids are now routinely observed and searched. The complete observing cycle, including the 2"-3" measurement of position, requires about four minutes at present. The commonality of asteroids and artificial satellite observing, searching, data reduction, and orbital analysis is stressed. Improvements to the hardware and software as well as operational techniques are considered.

The Structure of the Uranian Rings and the Search for Rings Around Neptune

The nine narrow rings of Uranus, presently the only confirmed features of this system, have been observed with the diffraction-limited resolution (3.5 km) of ground-based occultations since their discovery in 1977. These data have been used to establish an orbit model, from which the five Keplerian orbit parameters for each ring, the pole of the mean ring plane, and the gravitational harmonic coefficients J sub 2 and J sub 4 have been determined. The rings are typically a few kilometers wide with eccentricities of about 0.001 and inclinations of a few hundredths of a degree, although a few have no measurable eccentricity or inclination. Interesting Voyager investigations would include probing the structure of the rings at higher spatial resolution, searching for new rings in the system (including inter-ring material), locating the postulated shepherd satellites, and searching for satellites inside the orbit of Miranda that might have dynamical influence on the rings. The high precision (approx 2 km) of the ring orbits might prove useful for spacecraft navigation. For Neptune, occultation searches have revealed no rings to a limit of a few hundreths optical depth, within a few hundred kilometers from the top of the planet's atmosphere (for equatorial rings).

Progress report on a new search for free e/3 quarks in the cores of 10(15) - 10(16) eV air showers

The Leeds 3 sq m Wilson cloud chamber is being used in a new search for free e/3 quarks close to the axes of 10 to the 15th power - 10 to the 16th power eV air showers. A ratio trigger circuit is used to detect the incidence of air shower cores; the position of the shower center and the axis direction are determined from photographs of current-limited spark chambers. It is thus possible, for the first time, to know where we have looked for quarks in air showers and to select for scanning only those cloud chamber photographs where we have good evidence that the shower axis was close to the chamber. 250 g/sq cm of lead/concrete absorber above the cloud chamber serve to reduce particle densities and make a quark search possible very close to the shower axes. The current status of the search is given.

Broadcasting satellite service synthesis using gradient and cyclic coordinate search procedures

Two search techniques are considered for solving satellite synthesis problems. Neither is likely to find a globally optimal solution. In order to determine which method performs better and what factors affect their performance, we design an experiment and solve the same problem under a variety of starting solution configuration-algorithm combinations. Since there is no randomization in the experiment, we present results of practical, rather than statistical, significance. Our implementation of a cyclic coordinate search procedure clearly finds better synthesis solutions than our implementation of a gradient search procedure does with our objective of maximizing the minimum C/I ratio computed at test points on the perimeters of the intended service areas. The length of the available orbital arc and the configuration of the starting solution are shown to affect the quality of the solutions found.

Using the IRAS data to search in the asteroid belt for any potential evidence of galactic colonization

The end product of the biological evolution seems to be the appearance of technological civilizations, which are characterized by superior technology that supercedes biological capabilities. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) has gained scientific recognition in recent years. The concept of galactic colonization is debated extensively, with opinions ranging from the impossible to the inevitable, but without a clear resolution. Answers can be obtained only with experimental tests and not with endless debates. A search for large space colonies in the asteroid belt, an ideal source of raw materials for a spaceborne civilization, is a test of the galactic colonization theory. The catalogue of solar system objects obtained form the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) observations at 12, 25, 60, and 100 microns, is an ideal source for such a search. The catalog is expected to be ready at the end of 1985 and will contain more than 10,000 objects.

Recent progress and future plans on the search for extraterrestrial intelligence

The history and present status of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) are surveyed. Individual search projects and NASA searches for ETI in the radio band are discussed, giving the targets and wavebands used in the investigations. The arguments about the existence of ETI and the usefulness of looking for it are reviewed.

The search for extraterrestrial life: Recent developments; Proceedings of the Symposium, Boston University, MA, June 18-21, 1984

The conference presents papers on the history of the search for extraterrestrial life, the scientific rationale and methods used in the search for other planetary systems, the detection of distant planets with the Space Telescope, planetary searches using optical astrometric interferometers, and infrared spectral identification of complex organic molecules in interstellar grains. Also considered are universal protein ancestors from hydrogen cyanide and water, astronomical sources of polarized light and their role in determining molecular chirality on earth, the universal diagrams and life in the universe, the precambrian evolution of terrestrial life and a thermodynamic approach to the occurrance and appearance of galactic life forms. Papers are also presented on the Ohio Seti program, lunar reflections of terrestrial radio leakage, the multichannel spectrum analyzer, software implementation of detection algorithms for the MCSA, the Serendip II design, galactic colonization and competition in a young galactic disk, implications of ancient and future migrations, extraterrestrial intelligence, the ineviability and the possible structures of supercivilizations, planetary, interplanetary and interstellar organic matter, and universal aspects of biological evolution.

SETI - The microwave search problem and the NASA sky survey approach

NASA's microwave observing program for SETI is presented. This strategy is composed of a high sensitivity, narrow frequency coverage, Target Search and a low sensitivity, broad frequency coverage, Sky Survey. The complementary nature of this dual mode search strategy is discussed. An overview is given of ongoing work in the development of the search strategy for the Sky Survey.

A search for Earth-approaching asteroids

New automated methods were developed for the detection and discrimination of Earth-approaching asteriods. Specifically, utilizing state-of-the-art, electron-bombarded, silicon diode, beam scanned, low light level television cameras and the most advanced video processing equipment available. The improvement of the limiting magnitude for a 50% probability of detection, increase the areal search rate, and minimize the burden on humans of the search effort. To this end, three increasingly automated and sophisticated versions of the data acquisition, storage, and processing systems, were designed and implemented. The celestial sphere were searched for Earth-approaching minor planets. An example of this effort is the recent cataloging of 1982 HS=3343 VNEDZEL. This particular high eccentricity, high inclination object is of a type even more rare than are Earth-approaching asteriods. Several of these were found.

Search for optical flashes from gamma-ray bursters

Preliminary results of an investigation of the Ondrejov and Sonneberg plate collections for possible optical counterparts to gamma ray bursters (GRBs) are presented. The study proceeds in three directions: as time-correlated searches for GRBs with known positions, as time-correlated searches for GRBs without known positions, and as archival searches. The position of the Perseus flasher was also investigated using 1000 hours of monitoring. No evidence for true optical images associated with GRBs was found. Statistical conclusions are drawn and discussed.

Survey of optimization techniques for nonlinear spacecraft trajectory searches

Mathematical analysis of the optimal search of a nonlinear spacecraft trajectory to arrive at a set of desired targets is presented. A high precision integrated trajectory program and several optimization software libraries are used to search for a converged nonlinear spacecraft trajectory. Several examples for the Galileo Jupiter Orbiter and the Ocean Topography Experiment (TOPEX) are presented that illustrate a variety of the optimization methods used in nonlinear spacecraft trajectory searches.

A search for evidence of past and ongoing mass loss in the hot DO degenerates PG 1159 - 035, PG 1034 + 001, and KPD 0005 + 5106

The results are reported of a search for evidence of mass loss from three very hot, helium-rich degenerate stars, PG 1034 + 001, PG 1159 - 035, and KPD 0005 + 5106, based upon a search for weak, velocity-displaced line features in high-resolution IUE spectra. The search was entirely negative for PG 1159 - 035 and resulted in the detection of Si IV in PG 1034 + 001 at the same redshifted velocity as the other detected far-ultraviolet resonance doublets. The presence of photospheric silicon in a DO star at 80,000 K is not predicted by current radiative acceleration theory. For KPD 0005 + 5106 there is no convincing far-ultraviolet spectroscopic detection of either past or ongoing mass loss. The high-ionization resonance doublets of C IV, Si IV, and N v share the same velocity broadening as the interstellar lines but are velocity displaced by + 10 km/s relative to the local interstellar medium. Their origin is ascribed to an expanding, photoionized H II region around KPD 0005 + 5106.

Minimizing distortion in truss structures via Tabu search

The shape control of large flexible space structures is of great interest to structural designers. A related problem is to seek ways to minimize the need for active controls by careful design and construction of the space structure. A tetrahedral truss structure that is used to support a precision segmented reflector or antenna surface is considered. The structure has a hexagonal platform and is characterized by the number of rings of members in the truss. For simplicity it is assumed that a flat truss geometry exists. Hence, all structural members and ball joints are required to have the same nominal length and diameter, respectively. Inaccuracies in the length of member or diameters of joints may produce unacceptable levels of surface distortion and internal forces. In the case of a truss structure supporting an antenna, surface distortions may cause unacceptable gain loss or pointing errors. The focus is solely on surface distortion, however, internal forces may be treated in a similar manner. To test the Tabu search code for DSQRMS the appropriate influence matrices are used for a flat, two-ring tetrahedral reflector truss generated by Green and Haftka (1989). In this example there are 102 members (NMEMB) and 31 ball joints (NJOINT) of the same nominal length, respectively. Hence, all the members may be interchanged and all the joints may be interchanged. In addition, 19 positions on the surface of the truss (NNODES) were used to measure error influences. After a variety of experiments a set of good parameters was choosen for Tabu search. The sample size at each iteration is 10*NMEMB and the short term memory size is 40. In addition four pruning rules were used to accelerate the search..

Single-agent parallel window search

Parallel window search is applied to single-agent problems by having different processes simultaneously perform iterations of Iterative-Deepening-A(asterisk) (IDA-asterisk) on the same problem but with different cost thresholds. This approach is limited by the time to perform the goal iteration. To overcome this disadvantage, the authors consider node ordering. They discuss how global node ordering by minimum h among nodes with equal f = g + h values can reduce the time complexity of serial IDA-asterisk by reducing the time to perform the iterations prior to the goal iteration. Finally, the two ideas of parallel window search and node ordering are combined to eliminate the weaknesses of each approach while retaining the strengths. The resulting approach, called simply parallel window search, can be used to find a near-optimal solution quickly, improve the solution until it is optimal, and then finally guarantee optimality, depending on the amount of time available.

Pioneer Venus Orbiter search for Venusian lightning

The results are reported of a search during 1988 and 1990 for optical pulses from lightning on the Venus nightside using the star sensor aboard the Pioneer Venus Orbiter. No optical evidence for lightning activity is found. These searches covered a much larger latitude range than any previous search. The results show that the Beta and Phoebe Regio areas previously identified by Russell et al. (1988) as areas with high rates of lightning activity were not active during the two seasons of the present observations. The results imply that the global flash rate and energy dissipation rate derived by Krasnopol'sky (1983) from observations of a single storm are too high. Experimental measurements performed to determine the amount of scattering occurring in the star scanner optics indicate that a previously determined upper bound to lightning activity is too low.

Application of a directed search to global steering of single gimballed CMGs

A guided depth-first search that manages null motion about torque-producing trajectories calculated with a singularity-robust (SR) inverse is proposed as a practical feedforward steering law that can globally avoid (or minimize the impact of) singular states in minimally-redundant single gimballed CMG systems. Cost and heuristic functions are defined to guide the search procedure in improving CMG trajectories. On-orbit implementation of the steering law is proposed as an extension to momentum management algorithms. A set of simulation examples is presented, illustrating the search performance for a 4-CMG pyramid-mounted array. Sensitivities of feedforward gimbal trajectories are examined in the presence of unmodeled disturbances, and techniques are proposed for avoiding excessive divergence.
