Generalized current distribution rule

Method helps determine branch current in parallel-series network in relation to total input current by inspection. Method is particularly useful for circuits with many elements when branch elements are described as admittances. If element values are variables, then these values may be expressed as admittances to find currents readily in desired branches.

Acreage estimation, feature selection, and signature extension dependent upon the maximum likelihood decision rule

A maximum likelihood estimation technique is used for the analysis of agricultural remote sensor data. The m-class probability of misclassification is estimated using unlabeled test samples and labeled training samples. A bound on the variance of a proposed unbiased estimator of the m-class probability of error is derived. The particular case in which each class density is assumed to be a mixture of multivariate normal densities is considered. The extension of spectral signatures in space and time is discussed.

On the use of two hardening rules of plasticity in incremental and pseudo force analysis

The tangent stiffness and pseudo force forms of the equations of motion are first derived within the context of a total Lagrangian formulation. After a brief discussion of available incremental theory plasticity models, the small strain formulations and computational procedures of the mechanical sublayer model and combined kinematic-isotropic hardening as used in the general purpose structural analysis program AGGIE I are presented. Several sample problems are then presented along with recommended guidelines for use of the two plasticity models.

Control/display trade-off study for single-pilot instrument flight rule operations

The objectives were to determine minimum autopilot functions and displays required to keep pilot workload at an acceptable level; to determine what constitutes an acceptable level of workload; to identify critical tasks; and to suggest specific experiments required to refine conclusions. It was determined that workload relief is derived from basic stability augmentation; that complex autopilots can lead to serious blunders; and that displays need to enhance positional awareness and minimize the likelihood of false hypothesis.

An experiment proposed and set up by the readers will be flying on board the Shuttle; these are the rules of the game; the experiments of others

The 400th round trip ticket to space via the space shuttle is booked in the name of an Italian journal. Students from that country are offered an opportunity to propose an experiment for NASA's Get Away Special program. The dimensional characteristics of the container, as specified by NASA, are given as well as limitations of weight, volume, diameter, and height for the experiment. The types of experiments in the OSS-1 payload and their operation are described.

Ground-simulation investigation of VTOL instrument flight rules airworthiness criteria

A two-part ground-simulation investigation of VTOL terminal-area operations, conducted as part of a joint NASA/FAA program to develop airworthiness criteria for this class of vehicle, is described. The baseline vehicle selected for the simulations was a generalized version of the XV-15 tilt-rotor mathematical model, which was modified to permit generic variations in forces or moments or both with power or configuration changes. Additionally, changes to wing area and rotor-blade chord were considered as a means of modifying the allowable thrust-angle versus speed relationships (the conversion corridor). The Vertical Motion Simulator at Ames Research Center was used in the experiment. Four engineering test pilots conducted over 200 piloted evaluations examining the influence of the experimental variables on their ability to perform terminal-area operations.

A rule based computer aided design system

A Computer Aided Design (CAD) system is presented which supports the iterative process of design, the dimensional continuity between mating parts, and the hierarchical structure of the parts in their assembled configuration. Prolog, an interactive logic programming language, is used to represent and interpret the data base. The solid geometry representing the parts is defined in parameterized form using the swept volume method. The system is demonstrated with a design of a spring piston.

Generalization of rectangular element stiffness matrix and thermal load vector associated with a(0) + a(1)x + a(2)y + a(3)xy type interpolation rule

The stiffness-matrix formulation for the rectangular finite element described by Melosh (1963) and Weaver and Johnston (1984) is generalized to orthotropic materials with material axes not necessarily coincident with the x and y axes; i.e., the condition d(13) = d(23) = 0 is removed. Also included are explicit expressions for the element load vector associated with nonuniform temperature increase in the element. Applications to the analysis of thermal stresses in thin Si-crystal ribbons subjected to temperature changes with highly nonuniform lengthwise and transverse gradients (Utku et al., 1986) and to the simulation of the thermoviscoelastic behavior of growing Si ribbons (Utku and Ray, 1986) are indicated.
