The effect of partial coherence in receiving system noise temperature on array gain for telemetry and radio frequency carrier reception for receiving systems with unequal predetection signal-to-noise ratios

Signal to noise ratio improvement realized by arraying receiving systems or stations for coherent reception is reduced when some portion of the predetection noise is coherent in the array. This effect for arrayed receiving systems with unequal apertures including expected performance for selected planets of the solar system within the array beamwidth is examined.

A radio-frequency analysis of paraboloidal antennas located near diffracting fences

The cylindrical waves associated with the Sommerfeld solution for a diffracting half-plane are applied in the evaluation of the effects of secondary radiation on the focal-region-fields of paraboloids. A cross-correlation between the computed focal-region-fields and the feed-antenna-fields is then introduced to determine the modified radiation pattern of paraboloidal antennas. The half-plane solution is adapted to estimate the effects of a polygonal fence on 9-meter S-band and 3-meter S- and Ku-band antennas at the Merrit Island, Fl Spacecraft Tracking and Data Network Station.

Low temperature operation of an S2 laser using radio frequency simmer discharges

Technological problems stemming from high temperature operation of the sulfur resonator have hindered its development as a tunable, efficient, discharge pumped laser. The use of RF simmer discharges is shown to reduce previous temperature constraints by dissociating polyatomic sulfur molecules into the dimer, such that lasing is achieved when pumped by an XeCl excimer laser. The peak power output of the S2 laser and the transmission spectra through sulfur discharges are used to infer the effectiveness of the discharge in dissociating the vapor.

Radar activities of the DFVLR Institute for Radio Frequency Technology

Aerospace research and the respective applications microwave tasks with respect to remote sensing, position finding and communication are discussed. The radar activities are directed at point targets, area targets and volume targets; they center around signature research for earth and ocean remote sensing, target recognition, reconnaissance and camouflage and imaging and area observation radar techniques (SAR and SLAR). The radar activities cover a frequency range from 1 GHz up to 94 GHz. The radar program is oriented to four possible application levels: ground, air, shuttle orbits and satellite orbits. Ground based studies and measurements, airborne scatterometers and imaging radars, a space shuttle radar, the MRSE, and follow on experiments are considered.

Interstellar O2. I - Abundance, excitation, and prospects for detection of O-16O-18 at radio frequencies

Molecular oxygen, O2, is predicted to be an important constituent of the interstellar gas, but it has not yet been detected in interstellar clouds. In this paper, the gas phase production and destruction of O2 are reconsidered, a non-LTE calculation of level populations at cloud temperatures is presented, and O2 column densities in diffuse and dark clouds are predicted. Ground-based detection of the 234 GHz line of O-16O-18 is shown to be feasible; if CO and O2 are comparable in abundance in clouds similar to the Taurus molecular cloud or in giant molecular clouds, the brightness temperature is predicted to be 0.1 K.

Radio frequency fields generated by the S-band communication link on OV102

The Space Shuttle STS-3 mission carried a Plasma Diagnostics Package (PDP) whose instrumentation included an S-band antenna and detector. The PDP was maneuvered by the Remote Manipulator System arm through a computer controlled sequence in the Orbiter's X-Z plane, above the quad and hemi S-band communications antennas. Antenna field strength measurements were conducted during transmitter high power modes, and the results were compared to ground full scale measurements and predictions. A field strength 4.8 + or - 3 dB higher than predicted is noted. This RF field is primarily due to the quad PM transmitter, whose power output of 115 W compares with 15 W for the hemi.

The NASA data systems standardization program - Radio frequency and modulation

The modifications being considered by the NASA-ESA Working Group (NEWG) for space-data-systems standardization to maximize the commonality of the NASA and ESA RF and modulation systems linking spaceborne scientific experiments with ground stations are summarized. The first phase of the NEWG project shows that the NASA MK-IVA Deep Space Network and Shuttle Interrogator (SI) systems in place or planned for 1985 are generally compatible with the ESA Network, but that communications involving the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) are incompatible due to its use of spread-spectrum modulation, pseudonoise ranging, multiple-access channels, and Mbit/s data rates. Topics under study for the post-1985 period include low-bit-rate capability for the ESA Network, an optional 8-kHz command subcarrier for the SI, fixing the spacecraft-transponder frequency-multiplication ratios for possible X-band uplinks or X-band nondeep-space downlinks, review of incompatible TDRS features, and development of the 32-GHz band.

Radio-frequency electrical properties of some neat and metal-doped polyimides

As the size and complexity of aerospace systems increase, the uses of polymers are also expected to increase. Polyimides constitute one promising generic class of polymeric materials. They retain good mechanical and physical properties at higher temperatures and absorb less moisture than do the epoxies, which are the polymers most frequently used in present aerospace systems. The properties of these polyimide materials are, therefore, of considerable interest to the aerospace community. Of particular importance are the electrical properties because these properties relate to both electrical and structural applications.

Spacecraft mass trade-offs versus radio-frequency power and antenna size at 8 GHz and 32 GHz

The purpose of this analysis is to help determine the relative merits of 32 GHz over 8 GHz for future deep space communications. This analysis is only a piece of the overall analysis and only considers the downlink communication mass, power, and size comparisons for 8 and 32 GHz. Both parabolic antennas and flat-plate arrays are considered. The Mars Sample Return mission is considered in some detail as an example of the tradeoffs involved; for this mission the mass, power, and size show a definite advantage of roughly 2:1 in using the 32 GHz over 8 GHz.

Detection of radio-frequency modulated optical signals by two and three terminal microwave devices

An interdigitated photoconductor (two terminal device) on GaAlAs/GaAs heterostructure was fabricated and tested by an electro-optical sampling technique. Further, the photoresponse of GaAlAs/GaAs HEMT (three terminal device) was obtained by illuminating the device with an optical signal modulated up to 8 GHz. Gain-bandwidth product, response time, and noise properties of photoconductor and HEMT devices were obtained. Monolithic integration of these photodetectors with GaAs microwave devices for optically controlled phased array antenna applications is discussed.

Radio Frequency (RF) strain monitor

This invention relates to an apparatus for measuring strain in a structure. In particular, the invention detects strain in parts per million to over ten percent along an entire length (or other dimension) of a structure measuring a few millimeters to several kilometers. By using a propagation path bonded to the structure, the invention is not limited by the signal attenuation characteristics of the structure and thus frequencies in the megahertz to gigahertz range may be used to detect strain in part per million to over ten percent with high precision.

Radio-frequency plasma chemical vapor deposition growth of diamond

Plasma chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at 13.56 MHz has been used to produce diamond particles in two different inductively coupled systems with a mixture of methane and hydrogen. The effect of a diamondlike carbon (DLC) overcoating on silicon, niobium, and stainless-steel substrates has been investigated and in the case of silicon has been found to enhance particle formation as compared to uncoated polished silicon. In addition the use of carbon monoxide in hydrogen has been found to produce well-defined individual faceted particles as well as polycrystalline films on quartz and DLC coated silicon substrates. Plasma CVD is a competitive approach to production of diamond films. It has the advantage over microwave systems of being easily scaled to large volume and high power.

Power spectra at radio frequency of lightning return stroke waveforms

The power spectra of the wideband (10 Hz to 100 kHz) magnetic field signals in a number of lightning return strokes (primarily first return strokes) measured during a lightning storm which occurred in Lindau, West Germany in August, 1984 have been calculated. The RF magnetic field data were obtained with the engineering unit of the Galileo Jupiter Probe lightning experiment. The spectra of the magnetic field data definitely show fine structure, with two or three distinct peaks appearing in the spectra of many of the waveforms. An enhancement of power at frequencies of about 60-70 kHz is often seen in the spectra of the waveform time segments preceding and following the rise-to-peak amplitude of the return stroke.

Ion optics system incorporating radio frequency mass separation

Results of an experimental study are presented. They show that an RF mass discriminator, based on a Bennett mass spectrometer concept, can be used to discriminate between two species of ions with about a 2-to-1 charge-to-mass ratio. Such a device would be useful for separating monatomic and diatomic oxygen ions in a system designed to simulate the environment that spacecraft encounter in low earth orbit. The influence of changing mass discriminator parameters - such as the spacing of its grids, the amplitude and frequency of RF voltage signals applied to it and the current density of ions incident upon it - on its species discrimination capabilities is discussed. Experimental results are also compared to the results of a simple theoretical model to gain insight into the processes occurring in the discriminator. These results are shown to be in good agreement.

Remote, PCM-controlled, multi-channel radio frequency FM telemetry system for cryogenic wind tunnel application

A telemetry system used in the NASA-Langley cryogenic transonic wind tunnel to obtain rotational strain and temperature data is described. The system consists of four FM transmitters allowing for a remotely controlled PCM combination. A rotating four-contact mercury slip-ring is used as an interface between the fixed and rotating mechnical structures. Over 60 channels of data on the main fan disk and blade structures have been obtained. These data are studied to verify computer predictions and mechanical life. A series of block diagrams are included.

Dynamics of charged particles in a Paul radio-frequency quadrupole trap

A molecular-dynamics simulation of hundreds of ions confined in a Paul trap has been performed. The simulation includes the trapped particles' micromotion and interparticle Coulomb interactions. A random walk in velocity was implemented to bring the secular motion to a given temperature which was numerically measured. When the coupling Gamma is large the ions from concentric shells which undergo a quadrupole oscillation at the RF frequency, while the ions within a shell form a 2D hexagonal lattice. Ion clouds at 5 mK show no RF heating for q(z) less than about 0.6, whereas rapid heating is seen for qz = 0.8.
