A Scalable Quantum Cryptography Network for Protected Automation Communication (Final Report)

This is the final report for a CEDS-funded project aimed at developing a new quantum technology for securing utility communication networks used to control and monitor electrical grid equipment. Securing these control networks represents a unique challenge as the performance of the security solution has a direct impact on the stability and reliability of the electrical grid. Traditional, software-based solutions - developed for information networks - are not suitable for utility control networks because they introduce latency, require burdensome maintenance and upgrades, are often incompatible with legacy equipment, and introduce operational complexity that reduces grid reliability. Consequently, many U.S. utilities do not use existing solutions and, instead, protect their critical control networks through the careful isolation and obscuration of their networked equipment. With more utilities embracing grid automation, the attack surface that utilities must defend from hackers has grown to an unmanageable size. To address this situation, Qubitekk and its partners proposed and developed a hardware-based solution that can secure critical control networks without negatively impacting grid performance. This new solution is based on quantum key distribution (QKD) techniques that guarantee secure key generation and distribution across a utility control network. Through deployment and field testing of a prototype QKD system, we have shown that this solution delivers long-term network security, is technically feasible to implement and maintain on a utility’s distribution substation network and does not negatively impact grid operations. In addition, the project has identified and solved key challenges associated with generating, transmitting, and measuring coherent photonic quantum states on a real-world fiber optic network. These additional findings are playing a critical role in advancing quantum networks for quantum computing applications. An overview of the QKD prototype development effort, field testing activities and results, and additional findings relevant to emerging quantum networks are presented in this report.

Engineering topologically protected superconducting states

Efforts to develop systems which support non-Abelian excitations are motivated by both scientific curiosity and a practical desire to built a fault tolerant quantum computer to solve problems fundamentally intractable for classical computations. Experimentally, signatures of simplest non-Abelian excitations have been seen in spectroscopic measurements, yet current experiments fall shot of demonstrating non-Abelian exchange statistics. With DOE support we explore several systems where non-Abelian excitations are expected to appear, with special attention paid to the ability to demonstrate braiding. In nanowire semiconductor/superconductor hybrid system we are developing devices where position of Majorana particles, the simplest non-Abelian excitations, can be varied by magnetic field. The system will allow braiding of Majorana fermions and study non-Abelian statistics. In another system we focus on the development of a new platform where higher order non-Abelian excitations - parafermions - can be realized. Recently we demonstrated formation of heliacal channels in the fractional quantum Hall regime, precursors of topological superconductors that support parafermion excitations. Investigation of these channels and induced superconductivity will be an important part of the proposed research. Finally, investigation of induced superconductivity in topological insulators and discovery of highly unharmonic current-phase relation in Josephson junctions is the basis for the proposed realization of a topologically protected qubits with abelian anions.

Cyber Physical Protection for Natural Gas Compression

The secure transport of natural gas through North American pipelines is vital for both home and industrial purposes. GE in collaboration with Baker Hughes and Idaho National Laboratory, completed a US Department of Energy grant program to develop a new cyber-physical protection system that monitors the large compressor stations used to boost pressure and maintain proper gas flow. Algorithms were developed to detect the presence of a cyber-attack that impacts the compressor station physical processes, locate the critical functions being manipulated, and potentially neutralize the attack allowing continued operations. The technology was successfully demonstrated at an operating compressor facility located in New York state.

Laser Surface Processing of Alloys for Corrosion Protection (Final Project Report of Marine Energy Seedling Project)

This is the final project report for the MHK Seedling project. The report describes use of laser surface processing (LSP) to modify the surface of test materials (Al, steel) and the corrosion testing performed on the resulting samples in different corrosion environments. Data shows that LSP improved the corrosion resistance of Al and steel used in this work relative to respective non-LSP samples. The data also showed that each material had a specific range of laser processing conditions where the beneficial effects of LSP (i.e. improvement in corrosion protection) were observed. Application of LSP to enable low-cost materials in marine environments, additional microstructural analysis and long-term testing are proposed to further develop this technology for marine renewable energy and systems.

Harmonized Automatic Relay Mitigation of Nefarious Intentional Events (HARMONIE) - Special Protection Scheme (SPS)

The harmonized automatic relay mitigation of nefarious intentional events (HARMONIE) special protection scheme (SPS) was developed to provide adaptive, cyber-physical response to unpredictable disturbances in the electric grid. The HARMONIE-SPS methodology includes a machine learning classification framework that analyzes real time cyber-physical data and determines if the system is in normal conditions, cyber disturbance, physical disturbance, or cyber-physical disturbance. This classification then informs response, if needed and/or suitable, and included cyber-physical corrective actions. Beyond standard power system mitigations, a few novel approaches were developed that included a consensus algorithm-based relay voting scheme, an automated power system triggering condition and corrective action pairing algorithm, and a cyber traffic routing optimization algorithm. Both the classification and response techniques were tested within a newly integrated emulation environment composed of a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) and SCEPTRE™. This report details the HARMONIE-SPS methodology, highlighting both the classification and response techniques, and the subsequent testing results from the emulation environment.

Field Testing of Self-Healing Metallic Coatings for Internal Corrosion Protection of Natural Gas Pipelines

Internal corrosion occurs in natural gas pipelines primarily due to the presence of water, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide. Internal corrosion can eventually result in leakage, cracks, and rupture of the pipeline. The objective of this work is to mitigate internal corrosion in steel pipelines transporting natural gas using cold spray coatings. The corrosion behavior of carbon steel coated with self-healing zinc chromium (ZnCr) and zinc niobium (ZnNb) cold spray coatings was investigated in a natural gas environment. For comparison purposes, hot-dip galvanized steel (HDGS) was tested under the same conditions as cold spray coatings. The field test was performed at the NW Natural gas storage facility in Mist, Oregon. The field test was conducted in a 6-inch diameter pipe transporting wet natural gas out of an underground storage well at 500 psi and 4.4 °C. The coupons were tested for 15 and 32 days under stagnant and flow conditions, respectively. Weight loss method was used to measure the corrosion rate of metallic coatings. Post-corrosion surface characterization was performed on the specimen using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Crystalline phases were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The field-test results confirmed that the metallic coatings provided corrosion protection of carbon steel exposed to wet natural gas under stagnant and flow conditions. The formation of the ZnCO 3 layer on top of ZnNb and ZnCr coatings led to passivation of the coatings which helps to reduce the self-corrosion. These layers form a barrier for diffusion of corrosive species to the surface.

Intelligent, grid-friendly, modular extreme fast charging system with solid-state DC protection

The development of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is crucial for the widespread adoption of electric transportation. However, implementing such infrastructure is a complex task that requires consideration of factors such as space limitations, adherence to industry standards, grid capacity, and other technical and policy issues. This project seeks to create a framework for the efficient design of compact medium voltage (MV) extreme fast charging (XFC) stations for EVs. The station design involves the use of a solid-state transformer (SST) that connects to the MV distribution network, delivering power to a shared DC bus. This innovative approach eliminates the need for a step-down transformer to provide low-voltage service by connecting directly to the MV distribution network. Eliminating the low-frequency transformer not only reduces the system footprint and losses but also eliminates inrush currents during grid black-start. Additionally, placing power electronics directly on the distribution system allows for high-bandwidth filtering and power factor correction. The inclusion of a shared DC bus enables multiple charging dispensers and DC storage/generation units to connect, forming a DC microgrid. This setup facilitates power sharing with minimal conversion stages. The project showcases a DC distribution network protected by intelligent solid-state (SS) DC circuit breakers (DCCB) capable of isolating the smallest section of the faulted circuit much faster than existing mechanical solutions.
