A mathematical basis for the design and design optimization of adaptive trusses in precision control

A mathematical basis for the optimal design of adaptive trusses to be used in supporting precision equipment is provided. The general theory of adaptive structures is introduced, and the global optimization problem of placing a limited number, q, of actuators, so as to maximally achieve precision control and provide prestress, is stated. Two serialized optimization problems, namely, optimal actuator placement for prestress and optimal actuator placement for precision control, are addressed. In the case of prestressing, the computation of a 'desired' prestress is discussed, the interaction between actuators and redundants in conveying the prestress is shown in its mathematical form, and a methodology for arriving at the optimal placement of actuators and additional redundants is discussed. With regard to precision control, an optimal placement scheme (for q actuators) for maximum 'authority' over the precision points is suggested. The results of the two serialized optimization problems are combined to give a suboptimal solution to the global optimization problem. A method for improving this suboptimal actuator placement scheme by iteration is presented.

Test Bed Concentrator (TBC)

A point focussing concentrator design adapted from an existing communications antenna for use in a solar test bed application is described. The structure design, configured for use with JPL's spherical radius mirror panels, made no attempt toward optimization. The key objectives of stiffness, pointing accuracy, and timely delivery were exceeded. The system weight is approximately 16,000 Kg (36,000 lbs) and has a calculated 1 sigma system error of 0.03 degrees.

GW with hybrid functionals for large molecular systems

A low-cost approach for stochastically sampling static exchange during time-dependent Hartree–Fock-type propagation is presented. This enables the use of an excellent hybrid density functional theory (DFT) starting point for stochastic GW quasiparticle energy calculations. Generalized Kohn–Sham molecular orbitals and energies, rather than those of a local-DFT calculation, are used for building the Green function and effective Coulomb interaction. The use of an optimally tuned hybrid diminishes the starting point dependency in one-shot stochastic GW, effectively avoiding the need for self-consistent GW iterations.

Non-LTE line-blanketed model atmospheres of hot stars. 1: Hybrid complete linearization/accelerated lambda iteration method

A new munerical method for computing non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (non-LTE) model stellar atmospheres is presented. The method, called the hybird complete linearization/accelerated lambda iretation (CL/ALI) method, combines advantages of both its constituents. Its rate of convergence is virtually as high as for the standard CL method, while the computer time per iteration is almost as low as for the standard ALI method. The method is formulated as the standard complete lineariation, the only difference being that the radiation intensity at selected frequency points is not explicity linearized; instead, it is treated by means of the ALI approach. The scheme offers a wide spectrum of options, ranging from the full CL to the full ALI method. We deonstrate that the method works optimally if the majority of frequency points are treated in the ALI mode, while the radiation intensity at a few (typically two to 30) frequency points is explicity linearized. We show how this method can be applied to calculate metal line-blanketed non-LTE model atmospheres, by using the idea of 'superlevels' and 'superlines' introduced originally by Anderson (1989). We calculate several illustrative models taking into accont several tens of thosands of lines of Fe III to Fe IV and show that the hybrid CL/ALI method provides a robust method for calculating non-LTE line-blanketed model atmospheres for a wide range of stellar parameters. The results for individual stellar types will be presented in subsequent papers in this series.

Implication of production tax credit on economic dispatch for electricity merchants with storage and wind farms

The production tax credit (PTC) promotes wind energy development, reduces power generation costs, and can affect merchants’ joint economic dispatch, particularly for electricity merchants with both energy storage and wind farms. Two common PTC policies are studied – in the first policy, a wind farm receives PTC by selling wind generation to the market and its storage can be used to store energy from the wind generation and energy purchased from the grid but the energy released from the storage cannot receive PTC; in the second policy, the energy released from the storage can also qualify for PTC but purchasing energy from the grid is not allowed. We then employ dynamic programming to study merchants' optimal decision-making while considering PTC and the physical characteristics of storage systems. We analytically show that the state of charge (SOC) range can be segmented into different regions by SOC reference points under two PTC policies. The merchant's optimal action can be conveniently and uniquely determined based on the region within which the current SOC falls. Moreover, this study illustrates that PTC could substantially alter the optimal scheduling policy structures by affecting reference points and their relationships. The results showed that the frequencies for charging and discharging storage decisions decreased with an increase in PTC subsidy. Last, we confirm that, although the first policy allows merchants to buy electricity from the market, the second policy can bring more profits when the PTC is large at the current PTC rates. Furthermore, the findings can provide multistage decision-making guidance to electricity merchants in the wholesale power market.

GBOpt: Grain boundary structure optimization using Monte Carlo and evolutionary algorithms

Polycrystalline materials are made of many small crystals separated by grain boundaries (GBs), whose atomic structure strongly influences material properties. Because the structure of a GB determines its properties, the optimal structure must be known in order to determine those impacts. There are many ways of placing atoms in the GB region, but the optimal structure is defined as the one that gives the lowest value of a target property (typically energy). GB structure optimization has been successfully demonstrated using stochastic and evolutionary methods, but no reusable, community-maintained open-source workflow has been developed. GBOpt (Grain Boundary Optimization) is an open-source Python package that creates that workflow, where we have presently implemented two approaches: Markov Chain Monte Carlo, and genetic algorithm based on elite selection. We demonstrate this capability by successfully reproducing the known optimal structures of a specific GB in two materials, and point interested readers to the GitHub repository for additional examples, including optimization for different properties. Both of the implemented approaches recovered the known structures, with the genetic algorithm approach finding the optimal structure faster on average.

Point defects in Ga 2 O 3

In the field of high-power electronics, gallium oxide (Ga 2 O 3 ) is attracting attention due to its wide band gap and ability to be doped n-type. Point defects, including vacancies, impurities, and dopants, play important roles in optimizing device performance. This tutorial discusses the fundamental properties of point defects in monoclinic β-Ga 2 O 3 and the methods employed to study them. Oxygen vacancies are deep donors that do not cause n-type conductivity but may compensate acceptors. Gallium vacancies are deep acceptors that can be partially passivated by hydrogen. Substitutional magnesium is a promising acceptor that produces semi-insulating material and also forms a complex with hydrogen. Calcium and iron also have deep acceptor levels. Iridium deep donors are introduced into crystals grown from a melt in an Ir crucible. Here, other defects are introduced by irradiation with energetic particles such as neutrons or protons. In addition to altering the electronic properties, defects give rise to UV/visible emission bands in photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence spectra.

A Novel Dew Point Meter: Application to the Measurement of the Sulfuric Acid Dew Point for Combustion Flue Gas

Accurate knowledge of acid dew point is essential for industrial and applied combustion. Sulfur in the fuel or raw materials is converted to sulfur dioxide (SO2) during combustion, and a portion of the SO2 is oxidized to sulfur trioxide (SO3). The SO3 will react to form H2SO4 vapor when in the presence of water vapor. Even with just trace levels of H2SO4 vapor in the gas phase (1-10 ppm), the dew point can reach 100°C and higher. To avoid acid condensation and the resulting corrosion on heat recovery equipment, plant engineers must ensure that surface temperatures are above the acid dew point, but this decreases the efficiency of the thermal energy recovery. Thus, there is a trade-off between minimizing equipment corrosion and maximizing thermal energy recovery efficiency, and the acid dew point is a key parameter for this optimization. In this work, we analyze and discuss the theory of the sulfuric acid condensation process and develop a novel dew point meter based on this analysis. The meter consists of a novel optical instrument that is designed to monitor the slightest appearance of condensation on a hydrophobic window surface, and the surface temperature of the window is slowly decreased until condensation is first observed, yielding an accurate measurement of the dew point. The basis of the instrument is that a collimated beam from a diode laser generates scattered light when encountering surface condensate, and a sophisticated array detector is used to sensitively monitor the light scattering. The measurement procedures are established to rapidly find the acid dew point, while minimizing error. Further, we propose a calibration system based on a liquid bubbler, which can generate a stable gas flow with known sulfuric acid dew point, to test the dew point meter. Test results show that the dew point meter can accurately measure the acid dew point over a wide range.

Singular trajectories for time-optimal half-loop maneuvers of a high alpha fighter aircraft

Consideration is given to the problem of deriving a time-optimal open-loop control for the half-loop maneuver of a high-alpha aircraft, with initial conditions Mach 0.6 and 15,000 feet. Pontriagin's maximum principle is used to derive candidate optimal solutions. Using the two-point boundary-value algorithm, the flight path angle is maximized for various increasing specified final times until a final time of 13.6 sec yields a 180-deg flight-path angle. As the final time increased from 0.0 to 13.6 sec, the optimization process revealed 13 distinct switching structures of the control law, of which 11 contained singular arcs, and two had double singular arcs.

Artemis I Trajectory Design and Optimization

This paper presents the overall trajectory design and optimization process for NASA’s Artemis I mission to send an uncrewed Orion vehicle to a lunar Distant Retrograde Orbit (DRO). The on-orbit trajectory begins at the Space Launch System (SLS) core separation and ends at the Orion service module Earth Entry Interface (EI) point. The details of the trajectory optimization process are presented, including design of nominal and extended mission options, launch windows, and abort options. Novel design techniques are also discussed to account for contingencies, such as using auxiliary thrusters to protect against main engine failure and applying trajectory shaping to mitigate or reduce eclipse durations.

Mixed Integer Programming and Heuristic Scheduling for Space Communication Networks

We developed framework and the mathematical formulation for optimizing communication network using mixed integer programming. The design yields a system that is much smaller, in search space size, when compared to the earlier approach. Our constrained network optimization takes into account the dynamics of link performance within the network along with mission and operation requirements. A unique penalty function is introduced to transform the mixed integer programming into the more manageable problem of searching in a continuous space. The constrained optimization problem was proposed to solve in two stages: first using the heuristic Particle Swarming Optimization algorithm to get a good initial starting point, and then feeding the result into the Sequential Quadratic Programming algorithm to achieve the final optimal schedule. We demonstrate the above planning and scheduling methodology with a scenario of 20 spacecraft and 3 ground stations of a Deep Space Network site. Our approach and framework have been simple and flexible so that problems with larger number of constraints and network can be easily adapted and solved.

The Heuristic Dynamic Programming Approach in Boost Converters

In this study, a heuristic dynamic programming controller is proposed to control a boost converter. Conventional controllers such as proportional-integral-derivative (PID) or proportional-integral (PI) are designed based on the linearized small-signal model near the operating point. Therefore, the performance of the controller during the start-up, the load change, or the input voltage variation is not optimal since the system model changes by varying the operating point. The heuristic dynamic programming controller optimally controls the boost converter by following the approximate dynamic programming. The advantage of the HDP is that the neural network-based characteristic of the proposed controller enables boost converters to easily cope with large disturbances. An HDP with a well-trained critic and action networks can perform as an optimal controller for the boost converter. To compare the effectiveness of the traditional PI-based and the HDP boost converter, the simulation results are provided.

Experimental Investigation of Acceleration Characteristics of a Turbojet Engine Including Regions of Surge and Stall for Control Applications

The acceleration characteristics, in the region of maximum acceleration and compressor stall and surge, of an axial-flow turbojet engine with a fixed-area exhaust nozzle were determined by subjecting the engine to fuel flow steps, ramps, and ramps with a sine wave superimposed. From the data obtained, the effectiveness of an optimalizer type of control for this engine was evaluated. At all speeds above 40 percent of rated, a maximum acceleration was not obtained until the engine reached the point of stall or surge. A sharp drop, as high as 80 percent of maximum, in acceleration then occurred as the compressor entered surge of stall. With the maximum acceleration occurring at the point of surge or stall, the optimalizer-type control could not prevent the engine from entering surge or stall. Effective operation of the control may still be possible by sensing the sharp drop in acceleration experienced at the point of stall or surge and using this signal to limit fuel flow. The success of this type of operation would depend on the magnitude of the stall-recovery hysteresis.

RLV Turbine Performance Optimization

A task was developed at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) to improve turbine aerodynamic performance through the application of advanced design and analysis tools. There are four major objectives of this task: 1) to develop, enhance, and integrate advanced turbine aerodynamic design and analysis tools; 2) to develop the methodology for application of the analytical techniques; 3) to demonstrate the benefits of the advanced turbine design procedure through its application to a relevant turbine design point; and 4) to verify the optimized design and analysis with testing. Final results of the preliminary design and the results of the two-dimensional (2D) detailed design of the first-stage vane of a supersonic turbine suitable for a reusable launch vehicle (R-LV) are presented. Analytical techniques for obtaining the results are also discussed.

Design of Launch Abort System Thrust Profile and Concept of Operations

This paper describes how the Abort Motor thrust profile has been tailored and how optimizing the Concept of Operations on the Launch Abort System (LAS) of the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) aides in getting the crew safely away from a failed Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV). Unlike the passive nature of the Apollo system, the Orion Launch Abort Vehicle will be actively controlled, giving the program a more robust abort system with a higher probability of crew survival for an abort at all points throughout the CLV trajectory. By optimizing the concept of operations and thrust profile the Orion program will be able to take full advantage of the active Orion LAS. Discussion will involve an overview of the development of the abort motor thrust profile and the current abort concept of operations as well as their effects on the performance of LAS aborts. Pad Abort (for performance) and Maximum Drag (for separation from the Launch Vehicle) are the two points that dictate the required thrust and shape of the thrust profile. The results in this paper show that 95% success of all performance requirements is not currently met for Pad Abort. Future improvements to the current parachute sequence and other potential changes will mitigate the current problems, and meet abort performance requirements.
