Probing for high-momentum protons in He 4 via the He 4 ( e , e ' p ) X reactions

Experimental cross sections for the $^4He(e,e'p)X$ reaction up to a missing momentum of 0.632 GeV/$c$ at $x_B=1.24$ and $Q^2$=2(GeV/$c$)$^2$ are reported. The data are compared to Relativistic Distorted Wave Impulse Approximation(RDWIA) calculations for $^4He(e,e'p)^3H$ channel. Significantly more events in the triton mass region are measured for $p_{m}$$>$0.45 GeV/$c$ than are predicted by the theoretical model, suggesting that the effects of initial-state multi-nucleon correlations are stronger than expected by the RDWIA model.

Low‐Temperature Synthesis of Stable CaZn 2 P 2 Zintl Phosphide Thin Films as Candidate Top Absorbers

Abstract The development of tandem photovoltaics and photoelectrochemical solar cells requires new absorber materials with bandgaps in the range of ≈1.5–2.3 eV, for use in the top cell paired with a narrower‐gap bottom cell. An outstanding challenge is finding materials with suitable optoelectronic and defect properties, good operational stability, and synthesis conditions that preserve underlying device layers. This study demonstrates the Zintl phosphide compound CaZn 2 P 2 as a compelling candidate semiconductor for these applications. Phase‐pure, ≈500 nm‐thick CaZn 2 P 2 thin films are prepared using a scalable reactive sputter deposition process at growth temperatures as low as 100 °C, which is desirable for device integration. Ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy shows that CaZn 2 P 2 films exhibit an optical absorptivity of ≈10 4 cm −1 at ≈1.95 eV direct bandgap. Room‐temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements show near‐band‐edge optical emission, and time‐resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) measurements indicate a photoexcited carrier lifetime of ≈30 ns. CaZn 2 P 2 is highly stable in both ambient conditions and moisture, as evidenced by PL and TRMC measurements. Experimental data are supported by first‐principles calculations, which indicate the absence of low‐formation‐energy, deep intrinsic defects. Overall, this study shall motivate future work integrating this potential top cell absorber material into tandem solar cells.

A plausible method of preparing the ideal p-n junction interface of a thermoelectric material by surface doping

Recent advances in two-dimensional (2D) crystals make it possible to realize an ideal interface structure that is required for device applications. Specifically, a p-n junction made of 2D crystals is predicted to exhibit an atomically well-defined interface that will lead to high device performance. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, a simple surface treatment was shown to allow the possible formation of such an interface. Furthermore, Ta adsorption on the surface of a p-doped SnSe shifts the valence band maximum towards the higher binding energy due to the charge transfer from Ta to SnSe that is highly localized at the surface due to the layered structure of SnSe. As a result, the charge carriers of the surface are changed from holes of its bulk characteristics to electrons, while the bulk remains as a p-type semiconductor. This observation suggests that the well-defined interface of a p-n junction with an atomically thin n-region is formed between Ta-adsorbed surface and bulk.

Sustainable valorization of waste tires: Selective hydrotreating for renewable p-cymene production

The escalating global concern over waste tire management driven by the surge in automobiles necessitates sustainable and innovative solutions. Here, this study posits a novel approach by introducing a selective catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation process using a tandem two-stage pressurized fixed-bed reactor, aiming to convert waste tires into valuable sulfur-free p-cymene. The experimental results indicate that among the studied catalysts including Pt/C, Pd/C, Ru/C, and Ni/Al 2 O 3 -SiO 2 , the Pd/C exhibits concomitant hydrogenation and dehydrogenation functionalities, achieving full conversion and displaying 100 % selectivity towards p-cymene from limonene model compound. Furthermore, the Pd/C catalyst demonstrates remarkable efficiency in converting real-world waste tires into p-cymene, yielding up to 134.8 mg/g at optimal conditions. Importantly, this catalyst also facilitates complete hydrodesulfurization activity, addressing environmental concerns by producing sulfur-free liquid products. This innovative method not only optimizes p-cymene synthesis from waste tires but also contributes to environmental sustainability, showcasing both economic and ecological viability.

Tarda and Tagish Lake: Samples from the same outer Solar System asteroid and implications for D- and P-type asteroids

Here, we report a comprehensive study of the ungrouped type 2 carbonaceous chondrite, Tarda, which fell in Morocco in 2020. This meteorite exhibits substantial similarities to Tagish Lake, Wisconsin Range 91600, and Meteorite Hills 00432, which are generally considered to have originated from a D-type asteroid(s). We constrain the compositions and petrologies of the materials present in a potential sample of a D-type asteroid by reporting the petrography, bulk chemical compositions, bulk H, C, N, Cr, and Ti isotopic compositions, reflectance spectra, and in situ chemical compositions of metals, sulfides, carbonates, and FeO-poor and FeO-rich chondrule silicates of Tarda. We also present new data for Tagish Lake. We then compare Tarda with the other Tagish Lake-like meteorites. Tarda and Tagish Lake appear to be from the same parent body, as demonstrated by their similar petrologies (modal abundances, chondrule sizes), mineral compositions, bulk chemical and isotopic compositions, and reflectance spectra. While the two other Tagish Lake-like meteorites, Wisconsin Range 91600 and Meteorite Hills 00432, show some affinities to Tagish Lake and Tarda, they also share similar characteristics to the Mighei-like carbonaceous (CM) chondrites, warranting further study. Similarities in reflectance spectra suggest that P-type asteroids 65 Cybele and 76 Freia are potential parent bodies of Tarda and the Tagish Lake-like meteorites, or at least have similar surface materials. Since upcoming spacecraft missions will spectrally survey D-type, P-type, and C-type Trojan asteroids (NASA's Lucy) and spectrally study and return samples from Mars' moon Phobos (JAXA's Martian Moons eXploration mission), which is spectrally similar to D-type asteroids, these meteorites are of substantial scientific interest. Furthermore, since Tarda closely spectrally matches P-type asteroids (but compositionally matches the D-type asteroid like Tagish Lake meteorite), P-type and D-type asteroids may represent fragments of the same or similar parent bodies.

Glass formation and structure of melt quenched mixed oxy-sulfide Na 4 P 2 S 7-x O x glasses for 0 ≤ x ≤ 5

The structures of Na 4 P 2 S 7-x O x , 0 ≤ x ≤ 5, glasses were investigated using melt quench (MQ) samples. The short-range order (SRO) structures of these glasses were examined using a combination of Raman, Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), and 31 P Magic Angle Spinning NMR ( 31 P MAS NMR) spectroscopies to determine how oxygen is incorporated into the sulfide structure. Using vibrational spectroscopy, semi-quantitative 31 P MAS NMR, and charge balancing, a complete compositional map of all the SRO structures present in these glasses has been generated. From these findings, full incorporation of the oxygen into the sulfide melt was found to occur across the compositional series through a structural disproportionation reaction where oxygen systematically replaces bridging sulfurs (BSs), before replacing the remaining non-bridging sulfurs (NBSs). Under the melting and quenching conditions used in this study, it was found that the melts crystallize too quickly to form homogeneous crystallite-free glasses for x > 5.

CRISPR/Cas9 editing of p-COUMAROYL-CoA:MONOLIGNOL TRANSFERASE 1 in maize alters phenolic metabolism, lignin structure, and lignin-first biomass processing

Valorization of lignocellulosic biomass for sustainable production of high-value chemicals is challenged by the complexity of lignin, a phenolic biopolymer. Beyond the classical lignin monomers derived from p-coumaryl, coniferyl, and sinapyl alcohol, grass lignins incorporate substantial amounts of monolignol p-coumarates that are produced by p-COUMAROYL-CoA:MONOLIGNOL TRANSFERASE (PMT). Here, the CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutation of ZmPMT1 in maize enabled the design of biomass depleted in p-coumaroylated lignin and enriched in guaiacyl lignin. Lignin-first biorefining of stem biomass from zmpmt1 mutants by reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) generated a lignin oil depleted in carboxylates and enriched in guaiacyl-derived alcohols, which are desirable substrates for bio-based polyurethane synthesis. Furthermore, the reported lignin engineering in maize is a promising strategy for designing a dual-purpose crop, providing both food and feed, along with a renewable feedstock for the production of plant-based chemicals.

Debottlenecking 4-hydroxybenzoate hydroxylation in Pseudomonas putida KT2440 improves muconate productivity from p -coumarate

The transformation of 4-hydroxybenzoate (4-HBA) to protocatechuate (PCA) is catalyzed by flavoprotein oxygenases known as para-hydroxybenzoate-3-hydroxylases (PHBHs). In Pseudomonas putida KT2440 (P. putida) strains engineered to convert lignin-related aromatic compounds to muconic acid (MA), PHBH activity is rate-limiting, as indicated by the accumulation of 4-HBA, which ultimately limits MA productivity. Here, we hypothesized that replacement of PobA, the native P. putida PHBH, with PraI, a PHBH from Paenibacillus sp. JJ-1b with a broader nicotinamide cofactor preference, could alleviate this bottleneck. Biochemical assays confirmed the strict preference of NADPH for PobA, while PraI can utilize either NADH or NADPH. Kinetic assays demonstrated that both PobA and PraI can utilize NADPH with comparable catalytic efficiency and that PraI also efficiently utilizes NADH at roughly half the catalytic efficiency. The X-ray crystal structure of PraI was solved and revealed absolute conservation of the active site architecture to other PHBH structures despite their differing cofactor preferences. To understand the effect in vivo, we compared three P. putida strains engineered to produce MA from p-coumarate (pCA), showing that expression of praI leads to lower 4-HBA accumulation and decreased NADP+/NADPH ratios relative to strains harboring pobA, indicative of a relieved 4-HBA bottleneck due to increased NADPH availability. In bioreactor cultivations, a strain exclusively expressing praI achieved a titer of 40 g/L MA at 100% molar yield and a productivity of 0.5 g/L/h. Altogether, this study demonstrates the benefit of sampling readily available natural enzyme diversity for debottlenecking metabolic flux in an engineered strain for microbial conversion of lignin-derived compounds to value-added products.

Transient Triplet Metallopnictinidenes M–Pn (M = Pd II , Pt II ; Pn = P, As, Sb): Characterization and Dimerization

Nitrenes (R–N) have been subject to a large body of experimental and theoretical studies. The fundamental reactivity of this important class of transient intermediates has been attributed to their electronic structures, particularly the accessibility of triplet vs singlet states. In contrast, electronic structure trends along the heavier pnictinidene analogues (R–Pn; Pn = P–Bi) are much less systematically explored. We here report the synthesis of a series of metallodipnictenes, {M–Pn=Pn–M} (M = Pd II , Pt II ; Pn = P, As, Sb, Bi) and the characterization of the transient metallopnictinidene intermediates, {M–Pn} for Pn = P, As, Sb. Structural, spectroscopic, and computational analysis revealed spin triplet ground states for the metallopnictinidenes with characteristic electronic structure trends along the series. In comparison to the nitrene, the heavier pnictinidenes exhibit lower-lying ground state SOMOs and singlet excited states, thus suggesting increased electrophilic reactivity. Furthermore, the splitting of the triplet magnetic microstates is beyond the phosphinidenes {M–P} dominated by heavy pnictogen atom induced spin–orbit coupling.

Chemical manipulation of hydrogen induced high p-type and n-type conductivity in Ga 2 O 3

Advancement of optoelectronic and high-power devices is tied to the development of wide band gap materials with excellent transport properties. However, bipolar doping (n-type and p-type doping) and realizing high carrier density while maintaining good mobility have been big challenges in wide band gap materials. Here P-type and n-type conductivity was introduced in β-Ga 2 O 3 , an ultra-wide band gap oxide, by controlling hydrogen incorporation in the lattice without further doping. Hydrogen induced a 9-order of magnitude increase of n-type conductivity with donor ionization energy of 20 meV and resistivity of 10 -4 Ω.cm. The conductivity was switched to p-type with acceptor ionization energy of 42 meV by altering hydrogen incorporation in the lattice. Density functional theory calculations were used to examine hydrogen location in the Ga 2 O 3 lattice and identified a new donor type as the source of this remarkable n-type conductivity. Positron annihilation spectroscopy measurements confirm this finding and the interpretation of the experimental results. This work illustrates a new approach that allows a tunable and reversible way of modifying the conductivity of semiconductors and it is expected to have profound implications on semiconductor field. At the same time, it demonstrates for the first time p-type and remarkable n-type conductivity in Ga 2 O 3 which should usher in the development of Ga 2 O 3 devices and advance optoelectronics and high-power devices.

Probabilistic Prediction of Geomagnetic Storms and the K p index

Geomagnetic activity is often described using summary indices to summarize the likelihood of space weather impacts, as well as when parameterizing space weather models. The geomagnetic index K p in particular, is widely used for these purposes. Current state-of-the-art forecast models provide deterministic K p predictions using a variety of methods – including empirically-derived functions, physics-based models, and neural networks – but do not provide uncertainty estimates associated with the forecast. This paper provides a sample methodology to generate a 3-hour-ahead K p prediction with uncertainty bounds and from this provide a probabilistic geomagnetic storm forecast. Specifically, we have used a two-layered architecture to separately predict storm (K p ≥ 5 – ) and non-storm cases. As solar wind-driven models are limited in their ability to predict the onset of transient-driven activity we also introduce a model variant using solar X-ray flux to assess whether simple models including proxies for solar activity can improve the predictions of geomagnetic storm activity with lead times longer than the L1-to-Earth propagation time. By comparing the performance of these models we show that including operationally-available information about solar irradiance enhances the ability of predictive models to capture the onset of geomagnetic storms and that this can be achieved while also enabling probabilistic forecasts.

Rapidity dependence of initial state geometry and momentum correlations in p + Pb collisions

Event geometry and initial state correlations have been invoked as possible explanations of long range azimuthal correlations observed in high multiplicity p+p and p+Pb collisions. We study the rapidity dependence of initial state momentum correlations and event-by-event geometry in √s = 5.02 TeV p+Pb collisions within the 3+1D IP-Glasma model [1], where the longitudinal structure is governed by JIMWLK rapidity evolution of the incoming nuclear gluon distributions. Furthermore, we find that the event geometry is correlated across large rapidity intervals whereas initial state momentum correlations are relatively short range in rapidity. Based on our results, we discuss implications for the relevance of both effects in explaining the origin of collective phenomena in small systems.

Flat band driven itinerant magnetism in the Co-pnictides CaCo 2⁢ As 2 and LaCo 2 ⁢P 2

Flat bands can induce strong electron correlation effects that help stabilize both magnetic and superconducting states. Here, in this study, we carry out angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations to study the electronic structure of the Co-pnictides CaCo 2 ⁢As 2 and LaCo 2 ⁢P 2 . We find that the 𝑘 𝑧 Fermi topology of ferromagnetic LaCo 2 ⁢P 2 is markedly two-dimensional, while the antiferromagnetic CaCo 2 ⁢As 2 develops a 3D Fermi surface described by a zigzaglike band dispersion perpendicular to the Co-As plane. Furthermore, the magnetism is driven by the electronic correlations of the flat bands with 𝑑 𝑥⁢𝑦 and 𝑑 𝑧 2 orbital character at the Fermi level. Our results link the electronic dimensionality and the magnetic order and emphasize the critical role of the As-As and P-P bond strength along the 𝑐 direction to understand the electronic band structure and the rich phase diagram of transition metal pnictides.

Dynamic P-Q Capability and Abnormal Operation Analysis of a Wind Turbine with Doubly-Fed Induction Generator

After several accidents occurred in wind farms in the United States and around the world, the subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) issues in grid-connected wind farms have gained serious attention. Particularly, these issues have caused significant challenges to wind turbines with a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) because it is connected to the grid via both its stator and rotor paths. Traditionally, a P-Q capability chart is utilized to assure the safe operation boundary for a synchronous generator. But the energy conversion characteristics of a DFIG wind turbine are completely different. A critical factor to affect the reliable operation of a DFIG wind turbine is the rated current and pulse-width modulation (PWM) saturation constraints of its power converters. These constraint conditions can be affected by the wind turbine rotating speed and grid conditions. However, a detailed study of DFIG P-Q capability from these perspectives has not been conducted, which has hindered adequate understanding of many abnormal wind turbine operations reported in the literature and the development of advanced control technologies to overcome the challenges. The proposed study in this paper considers vector control implementation to DFIG power electronic converters in the dq reference frame, and the models and algorithms developed for the P-Q capability study have addressed specific DFIG power converter constraints that are different from those of a traditional synchronous generator. The paper especially focuses on exploring the dynamic natures of DFIG P-Q capability under uncertain and variable conditions to explore the root causes of many abnormal operations of DFIG wind turbines reported in the literature. The proposed study is validated through an electromagnetic transient simulation model of a grid-connected DFIG wind turbine. The proposed study has the potential to lead to the development of new DFIG control technologies that can help overcome the challenges for many abnormal operations of DFIG wind turbines.

Evolution of p -coumaroylated lignin in eudicots provides new tools for cell wall engineering

Ester-linked p-coumarate (pCA) is a hallmark feature of the secondary cell walls in commelinid monocot plants. It has been shown that pCA groups arise during lignin polymerisation from the participation of monolignol conjugates assembled by p-coumaroyl-CoA:monolignol transferase (PMT) enzymes, members of the BAHD superfamily of acyltransferases. Herein we report that a eudicot species, kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus), naturally contains p-coumaroylated lignin in the core tissues of the stems but not in the bast fibres. Moreover, we identified a novel acyltransferase, HcPMT, that shares less than 30% amino acid identity with known monocot PMT sequences. Recombinant HcPMT showed a preference in enzyme assays for p-coumaroyl-CoA and benzoyl-CoA as acyl donor substrates, and sinapyl alcohol as an acyl acceptor. Heterologous expression of HcPMT in hybrid poplar trees led to the incorporation of pCA in lignin but no improvement in the saccharification potential of the wood. This work illustrates the value in mining diverse plant taxa for new monolignol acyltransferases. Furthermore, the occurrence of pCA outside of monocot lineages may represent another example of convergent evolution in lignin structure. Furthermore, this discovery expands textbook views on cell wall biochemistry and provides a new molecular tool for engineering the lignin of biomass feedstock plants.

Fast-ion-driven Alfvén eigenmodes during ICRF-heated high β p plasmas on EAST

Fast-ion-driven Alfvén eigenmodes (AEs) are observed during ICRF-heated high-β p plasmas on EAST. Multiple high frequency modes are observed for shot 112670 at f TAE1 ~ 145 kHz, δB/B ~ 4 × 10 –4 and f TAE2 ~ 175 kHz, δB/B ~ 1.2 × 10 –5 measured by high-frequency Mirnov coils, at B 0 ~ 2.45 T, I p ~ 350kA, n e ramp-up from 3.5 × 10 19 to 4 × 10 19 m −3 at P ECRH ~ 2 MW, PLHW ~ 2 MW, and P ICRH ~ 2.1 MW. Here, 37 MHz ICRF minority hydrogen heating scheme, located at plasma core, creates fast ion population which drives TAEs unstable from TORIC + SFFPQL. In the experiment, it is observed that the evolution of mode frequency depends on electron density, following the theoretical TAE frequency characteristic $f_{{{\text{th}}}} = V_{{\text{a}}} /(4\pi qR) \propto \sqrt {n_{{\text{e}}} }$. As the electron density increases, the amplitude of the AE mode progressively diminishes. Higher plasma density shortens the fast-ion slowing-down time, reduces the heating efficiency of minority hydrogen, weakens the high-energy tail, and consequently decreases the fast-ion beta. Based on the diagnostic results from the microwave reflectometer and electron cyclotron emission (ECE) diagnostics, the TAE is located within the plasma core, consistent with the narrower core region of the TAE gap observed in the continuous spectrum.

A data-driven method to constrain the $\bar{p}$ background in Mu2e

The Mu2e experiment will search for the charged lepton flavour violating process of neutrinoless coherent muon to electron conversion in the field of an Al nucleus. The expected signal is a 104.97 MeV/c electron. One of the expected backgrounds is due to ¯ps produced by the proton beam at the Production Target and annihilating in the Stopping Target (ST). The background from ¯p annihilation is not a dominant one, but it has a large uncertainty and it cannot be suppressed by the timing cuts used to reduce the prompt background. However at Mu2e energies, p¯p annihilation is the only source of events with multiple simultaneous tracks coming from the ST. We exploit this unique feature and reconstruct the multi-track events to estimate the ¯p background.
