A parallel p ‐adaptive discontinuous Galerkin method for the Euler equations with dynamic load‐balancing on tetrahedral grids

Abstract A novel p ‐adaptive discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method has been developed to solve the Euler equations on three‐dimensional tetrahedral grids. Hierarchical orthogonal basis functions are adopted for the DG spatial discretization while a third order TVD Runge‐Kutta method is used for the time integration. A vertex‐based limiter is applied to the numerical solution in order to eliminate oscillations in the high order method. An error indicator constructed from the solution of order and is used to adapt degrees of freedom in each computational element, which remarkably reduces the computational cost while still maintaining an accurate solution. The developed method is implemented with under the Charm++ parallel computing framework. Charm++ is a parallel computing framework that includes various load‐balancing strategies. Implementing the numerical solver under Charm++ system provides us with access to a suite of dynamic load balancing strategies. This can be efficiently used to alleviate the load imbalances created by p ‐adaptation. A number of numerical experiments are performed to demonstrate both the numerical accuracy and parallel performance of the developed p ‐adaptive DG method. It is observed that the unbalanced load distribution caused by the parallel p ‐adaptive DG method can be alleviated by the dynamic load balancing from Charm++ system. Due to this, high performance gain can be achieved. For the testcases studied in the current work, the parallel performance gain ranged from 1.5× to 3.7×. Therefore, the developed p ‐adaptive DG method can significantly reduce the total simulation time in comparison to the standard DG method without p ‐adaptation.

CO 2 electro-reduction on Cu 3 P: Role of Cu(I) oxidation state and surface facet structure in C 1 -formate production and H 2 selectivity

We report the catalytic activity and mechanism of copper(I) phosphide, Cu 3 P, with predominant [00Ι] facet exposure for the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 (CO 2 RR) to formic acid. Crystalline nanosheets of this compound that show a preferential [00Ι] facet orientation exhibit undiminished CO 2 RR activity after 16 hours with full retention of crystal structure and surface chemical speciation and no detectable corrosion. In contrast to the range of products formed on Cu metal, CuO, and Cu 2 O, the CO 2 RR on Cu 3 P [00Ι] produces mainly hydrogen and formate as the sole carbon product in KHCO 3 electrolyte. Analysis of the Cu 3 P [00Ι] facet by HAADF-STEM was used to determine the surface lattice structure, while both XPS and Auger spectroscopies were used to determine the surface chemical speciation from the kinetic energies of ionized electrons. The presented analysis identifies isolated trigonal CuP 3 sites on the Cu 3 P[00Ι]-Cu 3 P 3 terminated surface and the Cu(I) oxidation state as precursor to the active catalyst. The CO 2 RR selectivity to formate and the higher turnover rate for H 2 production on the [00Ι] facet allows a structure-activity analysis and chemical mechanism to be proposed. Formation of a surface hydride at isolated *H-CuP 3 sites is proposed as the catalytic site in forming both H 2 and formate, while the long Cu—Cu separation retards forming C-C coupling products. In conclusion, these results disprove previously published claims of Cu(I) oxidation state as a sufficient criterion to promote CO 2 RR to C 2+ products, show that stronger bonded hydrides, *H-CuP 3 on Cu 3 P, favor production of the C1 product formate over all other carbon products, and predict that stronger formate binding (bidentate) is needed for CO 2 RR currents to compete with H 2 production.

miR-31-5p promotes proliferation and inhibits apoptosis of goat hair follicle stem cells by targeting RASA1/MAP3K1 pathway

Highlights: • MAP3K1 was upregulated in hair follicle stem cells in response to overexpression miR-31–5p. • We confirmed RASA1 as a target gene of miR-31–5p. • Inhibition of miR-31–5p promotes apoptosis. • The miR-31–5p/RASA1/MAP3K1 axis regulates hair follicle stem cells activity via MAPK pathway. The Yangtze River Delta white goat is a sole goat species that can naturally produce superior-quality brush hair. It's worth to mention that study the developmental mechanism of goat hair follicle stem cells is vital for future breed preservation and molecular breeding. In this study, we successfully isolated hair follicle stem cells from the skin tissue of fetal sheep neck spine, and harvested superior-quality and normal-quality brush hair goat tissue. The expression of miR-31-5p in goat hair follicle stem cells was verified by qPCR and Western blot. The effects of overexpression or inhibition of miR-31-5p on the proliferation and apoptosis of hair follicle stem cells were detected by EdU, CCK-8, flow cytometry, etc. miR-31-5p can significantly improve cell proliferation and inhibit cell apoptosis by targeting RASA1 and upregulating MAP3K1 level, whereas miR-31-5p knockdown led to an opposite effect. These results reveal a miR-31-5p-associated regulatory network between miR-31-5p and RASA1/MAP3K1 during the progression of superiorquality brush hair traits.

Nature of the Reactive Biferric Peroxy Intermediate P′ in the Arylamine Oxygenases and Related Binuclear Fe Enzymes

Binuclear nonheme iron enzymes activate O 2 to perform a wide range of chemical transformations. The process of O 2 activation typically involves a biferric peroxy-level intermediate P. It has been previously found that this intermediate undergoes further activation, either protonation or rearrangement to form P′ or further oxidation to form high-valent intermediates Q or X. Here, this study defines the structure of the P′ intermediate in the N-oxygenases CmlI (and AurF based on previous data) using nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) in conjugation with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These results, combined with variable temperature variable field (VTVH) magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy on the 1-electron cryoreduced P′, define the structure of the P′ intermediate as a μ-1,2-hydroxoperoxo biferric site with a second hydroxide bridge. Reaction coordinate calculations demonstrate that single electron transfer (SET) is facilitated by protonation of the peroxo, activating its reductive cleavage, and that the additional hydroxide bridge does not impact this reaction. VTVH MCD studies further reveal that the hydroxide bridge is absent in the biferrous site, suggesting that during the O 2 reaction with the biferrous site, a water molecule forms the hydroxide bridge in providing the proton that activates the peroxide in P′ for reactivity.

Structural evolution during solution-based synthesis of Li 7 P 3 S 11 solid electrolyte by synchrotron X-ray total scattering

Solution-based synthesis has emerged as a promising approach for scalable and efficient synthesis of solid electrolytes (SEs). However, the ionic conductivity of solution-synthesized SEs is much lower than that of SEs synthesized by solid state approaches. The structural evolution during the synthesis of SEs is crucial to explaining the decreased ionic conductivities but has not been well understood. Here, in this work, we use synchrotron X-ray total scattering combined with pair distribution function (PDF) analysis to understand the structural evolution during annealing of the solution-processed precursor for the synthesis of Li 7 P 3 S 11 SEs. Combining Bragg diffraction and diffuse scattering, X-ray total scattering enables detection of structural information including phase transition and crystallinity. The results show that the formation of Li 7 P 3 S 11 glass-ceramic starts at 230 °C. Increasing the annealing temperature helps to improve the crystallinity, but the degree of crystallization is still lower than 70.3% even after annealing at 290 °C when thermal decomposition of Li 7 P 3 S 11 to Li 4 P 2 S 6 has occurred. PDF analysis also revealed the existence of acetonitrile used in the solution-based synthesis in the SEs after annealing at high temperatures. The results rationalize the synthesis–property relationship, explain why annealing at 290 °C provides the highest ionic conductivity at the studied temperatures due to an optimal balance for achieving a high crystallinity while suppressing severe decomposition of Li 7 P 3 S 11 , and provide novel insights to develop approaches for synthesizing superior Li 7 P 3 S 11 SEs on a large scale.

Improved thermonuclear rate of 42 Ti( p , γ ) 43 V and its astrophysical implication in the rp process

Context. Accurate 42 Ti(p,γ) 43 V reaction rates are crucial for understanding the nucleosynthesis path of the rapid capture process (rp process) that occurs in X-ray bursts. Aims. We aim to improve the thermonuclear rates of 42 Ti(p,γ) 43 V based on more complete resonance information and a more accurate direct component, together with the recently released nuclear masses data. We also explore the impact of the newly obtained rates on the rp process. Methods. We reevaluated the reaction rate of 42 Ti(p,γ) 43 V by the sum of the isolated resonance contribution instead of the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model. We used a Monte Carlo method to derive the associated uncertainties of new rates. The nucleosynthesis simulations were performed via the NuGrid post-processing code ppn. Results. The new rates differ from previous estimations due to the use of a series of updated resonance parameters and a direct S factor. Compared with the previous results from the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model, which assumes compound nucleus 43 V with a sufficiently high-level density in the energy region of astrophysical interest, large differences exist over the entire temperature region of rp-process interest, up to two orders of magnitude. We consistently calculated the photodisintegration rate using our new nuclear masses via the detailed balance principle, and found the discrepancies among the different reverse rates are much larger than those for the forward rate, up to ten orders of magnitude at the temperature of 10 8 K. Using a trajectory with a peak temperature of 1.95×10 9 K, we performed the rp-process nucleosynthesis simulations to investigate the impact of the new rates. Our calculations show that the adoption of the new forward and reverse rates result in abundance variations for Sc and Ca of 128% and 49%, respectively, compared to the variations for the statistical model rates. On the other hand, the overall abundance pattern is not significantly affected. The results of using new rates also confirm that the rp-process path does not bypass the isotope 43 V. Conclusions. Our study found that the Hauser-Feshbach statistical model is inappropriate to the reaction rate evaluation for 42 Ti(p,γ) 43 V. The adoption of the new rates confirms that the reaction path of 42 Ti(p,γ) 43 V(p,γ) 44 Cr(β + ) 44 V is a key branch of the rp process in X-ray bursts.

Synthesis, structure, and transport properties of Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 clathrate solid solution

In this work, a new clathrate solid solution Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 ( x = 4, 8, 12) was synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state annealing method. The crystal structures of Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 were determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction. This clathrate solid solution crystallizes in the orthorhombic superstructure of clathrate-I type with 23 crystallographically independent framework sites, eight of them are occupied by Au/Cu and 15 are exclusively occupied by P atoms. The distribution of Au and Cu atoms over these eight framework sites is not random with a clear preference for Au to occupy the largest (Au/Cu)P 4 tetrahedra in the framework. The thermal stability and thermoelectric properties of the Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 solid solution were evaluated. Low thermal conductivity was achieved for Ba 8 Cu 16 – x Au x P 30 due to the combination of the host–guest crystal structure with rattling Ba atoms with the presence of heavy Au atoms and substitutional Cu/Au disorder in the clathrate framework.

Distributed polarization-doped GaN p–n diodes with near-unity ideality factor and avalanche breakdown voltage of 1.25 kV

Polarization-induced (Pi) distributed or bulk doping in GaN, with a zero dopant ionization energy, can reduce temperature or frequency dispersions in impurity-doped p–n junctions caused by the deep-acceptor-nature of Mg, thus offering GaN power devices promising prospects. Before comprehensively assessing the benefits of Pi-doping, ideal junction behaviors and high-voltage capabilities should be confirmed. In this work, we demonstrate near-ideal forward and reverse I–V characteristics in Pi-doped GaN power p–n diodes, which incorporates linearly graded, coherently strained AlGaN layers. Hall measurements show a net increase in the hole concentration of 8.9 × 1016 cm−3 in the p-layer as a result of the polarization charge. In the Pi-doped n-layer, a record-low electron concentration of 2.5 × 1016 cm−3 is realized due to the gradual grading of Al0-0.72GaN over 1 μm. The Pi-doped p–n diodes have an ideality factor as low as 1.1 and a 0.10 V higher turn-on voltage than the impurity-doped p–n diodes due to the increase in the bandgap at the junction edge. A differential specific on-resistance of 0.1 mΩ cm2 is extracted from the Pi-doped p–n diodes, similar with the impurity-doped counterpart. The Pi-doped diodes show an avalanche breakdown voltage of ∼1.25 kV, indicating a high reverse blocking capability even without an ideal edge-termination. This work confirms that distributed Pi-doping can be incorporated in high-voltage GaN power devices to increase hole concentrations while maintaining excellent junction properties.

Measurement of minority carrier diffusion length in p -GaN using electron emission spectroscopy (EES)

Electron emission spectroscopy was performed on metalorganic chemical vapor deposition grown p-n – -n + junctions with p-thicknesses ranging from 50 to 300 nm, doped with [Mg] = 3.5 × 10 19 cm –3 . By measuring the decreasing emitted electron intensity from a cesiated p-GaN surface with increasing p-thickness, we were able to extract the minority carrier diffusion length of electron in p-type GaN, L e = 26 ± 3 nm. The measured value is in good agreement with literature reported values. In conclusion, the extrapolated electron current at the n – region–p-GaN interface is in reasonable agreement with the simulated electron current at the interface.

Chalcogenide Perovskite YScS 3 as a Potential p-Type Transparent Conducting Material

Transparent conducting materials (TCMs) have been widely used in optoelectronic applications such as touchscreens, flat panel displays and thin film solar cells. These applications of TCMs are currently dominated by n-type doped oxides. High-performance p-type TCMs are still lacking due to their low hole mobility or p-type doping bottleneck, which impedes efficient device design and novel applications such as transparent electronics. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we propose chalcogenide perovskite YScS 3 as a promising p-type TCM. According to our calculations, its optical absorption onset is above 3 eV, which allows transparency to visible light. Its hole conductivity effective mass is 0.48m 0 , which is among the smallest in p-type TCMs, suggesting enhanced hole mobility. It could be doped to p-type by group-II elements on cation sites, all of which yield shallow acceptors. Here, combining these properties, YScS 3 holds great promise to enhancing the performance of p-type TCMs toward their n-type counterparts.

Physical properties investigation of tetragonal Ba T 2 P 2 (T = Ru, Pd)

The structural, thermal, electrical transport, and magnetic properties of ternary compounds BaT 2 P 2 (T = Ru, Pd) are reported together with electronic structure calculations. Our results show that BaRu 2 P 2 crystallises in the layered tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 -type structure (space group I4/mmm) whereas BaPd 2 P 2 adopts the primitive tetragonal CeMg 2 Si 2 -type structure (space group P4/mmm). The combined experimental results and electronic structure calculations suggest metallic and diamagnetic ground states for both materials. Electrical transport measurements further indicate non-Fermi liquid behaviour at low temperatures. Notably, BaRu 2 P 2 exhibits an anomalous feature in the magnetic susceptibility at T ~ 260 K, similar to that observed in BaRu 2 As 2 . A comparison between the bare density of states obtained from electronic structure calculations and the experimentally estimated values suggests the presence of strong correlation effects in the material. Furthermore, the heat capacity of BaPd 2 P 2 , calculated using the full phonon dispersion relation, is in good agreement with the experimental data, particularly at low temperatures, highlighting the significant contribution of optical phonon branches to C P in this temperature range.

HEXIM1 controls P-TEFb processing and regulates drug sensitivity in triple-negative breast cancer

The positive transcription elongation factor b (P-TEFb), composed of CDK9 and cyclin T, stimulates transcriptional elongation by RNA polymerase (Pol) II and regulates cell growth and differentiation. Recently, we demonstrated that P-TEFb also controls the expression of EMT regulators to promote breast cancer progression. In the nucleus, more than half of P-TEFb are sequestered in the inactive-state 7SK snRNP complex. Here, we show that the assembly of the 7SK snRNP is preceded by an intermediate complex between HEXIM1 and P-TEFb that allows transfer of the kinase active P-TEFb from Hsp90 to 7SK snRNP for its suppression. Down-regulation of HEXIM1 locks P-TEFb in the Hsp90 complex, keeping it in the active state to enhance breast cancer progression, but also rendering the cells highly sensitive to Hsp90 inhibition. Because HEXIM1 is often down-regulated in human triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), these cells are particularly sensitive to Hsp90 inhibition. Our study provides a mechanistic explanation for the increased sensitivity of TNBC to Hsp90 inhibition.

Disruption of p -coumaroyl-CoA:monolignol transferases in rice drastically alters lignin composition

Grasses are abundant feedstocks that can supply lignocellulosic biomass for production of cell-wall-derived chemicals. In grass cell walls, lignin is acylated with p-coumarate. These p-coumarate decorations arise from the incorporation of monolignol p-coumarate conjugates during lignification. A previous biochemical study identified a rice (Oryza sativa) BAHD acyltransferase (AT) with p-coumaroyl-CoA:monolignol transferase (PMT) activity in vitro. In this study, we determined that that enzyme, which we name OsPMT1 (also known as OsAT4), and the closely related OsPMT2 (OsAT3) harbor similar catalytic activity toward monolignols. We generated rice mutants deficient in either or both OsPMT1 and OsPMT2 by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis and subjected the mutants’ cell walls to analysis using chemical and nuclear magnetic resonance methods. Our results demonstrated that OsPMT1 and OsPMT2 both function in lignin p-coumaroylation in the major vegetative tissues of rice. Notably, lignin-bound p-coumarate units were undetectable in the ospmt1 ospmt2-2 double-knockout mutant. Further, in-depth structural analysis of purified lignins from the ospmt1 ospmt2-2 mutant compared with control lignins from wild-type rice revealed stark changes in polymer structures, including alterations in syringyl/guaiacyl aromatic unit ratios and inter-monomeric linkage patterns, and increased molecular weights. Furthermore, our results provide insights into lignin polymerization in grasses that will be useful for the optimization of bioengineering approaches for the effective use of biomass in biorefineries.

Emergence of p+ip superconductivity in two-dimensional doped Dirac systems

Searching for the $p + ip$ superconducting (SC) state has become a fascinating subject in condensed matter physics recently, as a dream application awaiting in topological quantum computation. Unfortunately, so far there is no universal principle for realizing $p + ip$ in generic solid-state systems. Here we report a theoretical discovery of a $p + ip$ SC ground state (coexisting with ferromagnetic order) in the honeycomb lattice Hubbard model in the extremely strong-coupling limit (e.g., infinite U) at low doping $(δ < 0.2)$, by using both the state-of-art Grassmann tensor product state approach and a continuum quantum field theory approach. Our discovery suggests a mechanism for the $p + ip$ SC state in generic strongly correlated systems based on spin-charge separation and the charge current–current coupling scenario, which opens a door towards experimental realization. The $p + ip$ SC state has an instability towards a potential non-Fermi liquid with a large but finite U . Nevertheless, by applying an in-plane Zeeman field, such a $p + ip$ SC state can be stabilized with finite U in a very wide range of doping. Relevant realistic materials are also proposed.

Hadronic resonance production and interaction in p-Pb collisions at LHC energies in EPOS3

Using the EPOS3 model with the Ultrarelativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model to describe the hadronic phase, we study the production of short-lived hadronic resonances and the modification of their yields and p T spectra in p-Pb collisions at √sNN= 5.02 TeV. High-multiplicity p-Pb collisions exhibit similar behavior to midperipheral Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies, and we find indications of a short-lived hadronic phase in p-Pb collisions that can modify resonance yields and p T spectra through scattering processes. The evolution of resonance production is investigated as a function of the system size, which is related to the lifetime of the hadronic phase in order to study the onset and evolution of scattering effects in p-Pb collisions. We also study hadron production separately in the core and corona parts of these collisions and explore how this division affects the total particle yields as the system size increases.

Nonlinear dynamics and quantum chaos of a family of kicked p -spin models

Herein we introduce kicked p-spin models describing a family of transverse Ising-like models for an ensemble of spin-1/2 particles with all-to-all p-body interaction terms occurring periodically in time as delta-kicks. This is the natural generalization of the well-studied quantum kicked top (p = 2) [Haake, Kus', and Scharf, Z. Phys. B 65, 381 (1987)]. We fully characterize the classical nonlinear dynamics of these models, including the transition to global Hamiltonian chaos. The classical analysis allows us to build a classification for this family of models, distinguishing between p = 2 and p > 2, and between models with odd and even p's. Quantum chaos in these models is characterized in both kinematic and dynamic signatures. For the latter, we show numerically that the growth rate of the out-of-time-order correlator is dictated by the classical Lyapunov exponent. Finally, we argue that the classification of these models constructed in the classical system applies to the quantum system as well.
