3002 Humidified Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer (HTDMA) Instrument Handbook

The Brechtel Manufacturing Inc. (BMI) Humidified Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer (HT-DMA Model 3002) (Brechtel and Kreidenweis 2000a,b, Henning et al. 2005, Xerxes et al. 2014) measures how aerosol particles of different initial dry sizes grow or shrink when exposed to changing relative humidity (RH) conditions. It uses two different mobility analyzers (DMA) and a humidification system to make the measurements. One DMA selects a narrow size range of dry aerosol particles, which are exposed to varying RH conditions in the humidification system. The second (humidified) DMA scans the particle size distribution output from the humidification system. Scanning a wide range of particle sizes enables the second DMA to measure changes in size or growth factor (growth factor = humidified size/dry size), due to water uptake by the particles. A Condensation Particle Counter (CPC) downstream of the second DMA counts particles as a function of selected size in order to obtain the number size distribution of particles exposed to different RH conditions.

Literature Review of Thermomechanical Analysis, Its Instrument Components and Applications

Thermomechanical analysis (TMA) is used to measure the dimensional changes in a sample as a function of temperature. TMA allows for several modes of analysis, with expansion and compression being the most common. TMA is based on the theory of dilatometry and relies on the fact that polymers are viscoelastic materials, possessing both viscous and elastic properties. TMA yields information about the thermal effects on a polymer such as shrinkage, expansion, softening, melting, glass transition temperature and allows for the calculation of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), which can be useful for many applications of polymers.

Aircraft-Integrated Meteorological Measurement System (AIMMS) Instrument Handbook

The AIMMS-20 probe is manufactured by Aventech Research Inc. and measures platform position, velocity, attitude, ambient temperature, static pressure, and the differential pressures from a 5-port hemispheric gust probe, and combines all these measured data into a calculation of the ambient winds. A detailed description of the AIMMS-20 specifications is available here. Note: The Aventech engineers use the aircraft-centric frame of reference common to aeronautical engineering, which defines z as down.

REDC Process Instrumentation Modernization Project

Critical electronics used for isotopes production have become outdated and difficult to manufacture. In particular the alpha-particle and neutron detection electronics (commonly referred to as Q2809A-9 and -11) which are used to monitor effluent activity in ORNL Building 7920 were designed and deployed in 1966-67. These electronics are still used but some parts are no longer available for purchase. In addition, the printed circuit boards used in the Count Rate Monitor (CRM) module have no fabrication files or quality assurance documentation. In light of this, a project to modernize the modules for ability to manufacture with modern parts was undertaken. Both the preamplifier and CRM were modernized with new printed circuit boards and parts which are current catalog parts. In addition, QA documentation was generated which allows the manufacturer to assure proper operation prior to delivery.

Ice Nucleation Spectrometer (INS) Instrument Handbook

The Ice Nucleation Spectrometer (INS) is an offline analytical measurement system used to process filter samples for freezing temperature spectra of immersion-mode ice nucleating particle (INP) number concentrations. It is almost identical to the CSU Ice Spectrometer (IS) design. While basic immersion freezing methods have been applied for decades, recent intercomparison studies (DeMott et al. 2017, 2018b) with other methods for sampling ambient INPs support the method’s utility. Use of the INS with filters produces spectra spanning wide dynamic ranges of temperature and, hence, INP concentration (e.g., six orders of magnitude). The INS is supported with well-established experimental protocols and has been applied in many diverse scenarios.
