Mg vacancy and impurity-limited MgO single crystal thermal conductivity

Magnesium oxide (MgO) exhibits one of the highest thermal conductivities among oxides and is widely used as a dielectric material and substrate in semiconductor devices, in refractory applications, and as a promising filler in thermal interface materials for electronics. Its high thermal conductivity may be sensitive to impurity and defects, yet this influence is still uncertain. Here, in this study, the impact of the common impurities, i.e., Al, Ca, Ti, V, Fe, Si, B, Nb, Zr, Na, and K, as well as Mg and O vacancies on phonon scattering and thermal conductivity of MgO is studied using a fully first-principles T-matrix framework. It is found that B, Nb, and Zr impurities, along with Mg vacancies, lead to exceptionally strong reductions in thermal conductivity. By contrast, O vacancies and other impurities have modest to minimal impacts. Leveraging the T-matrix results, we reassess the perturbative, mass-only formalism whose use is pervasive in the literature and show that neglecting bond disorder does not necessarily lead to underestimation: for all transition-metal impurities studied, bond perturbations partially cancel mass disorder, causing the traditional perturbative model to overestimate scattering. We propose a simple modified perturbative expression that incorporates both mass and bond disorder and closely reproduces the T-matrix trends. Our predicted low-temperature trends by including phonon-impurity and phonon-boundary scattering match reasonably well with experiments. This work provides an in-depth study of impurity- and vacancy-limited thermal conductivity of MgO and suggests that reported “high-purity” MgO values have likely not yet reached the intrinsic upper limit, which may be substantially higher.

Ultrafine-grained Al-Mg-Zr Alloy Processed by Shear-Assisted Extrusion with High Thermal Stability

Shear-assisted processing and extrusion (ShAPE) is used to consolidate Al-4.2Mg-1.6Zr-0.25Si-0.1Fe (wt.%) powders. The extruded alloy exhibits: (i) near-zero porosity; (ii) an attractive combination of tensile yield strength (~220 MPa), ultimate strength (330 MPa) and elongation (>20%); and (iii) excellent thermal stability at 400 ºC. The ultra-fine grain size in the gas-atomized powders – created and stabilized by primary L12-Al3Zr submicron precipitates - is maintained after consolidation and subsequent exposure at 400 ºC, contributing twice as much to strength as Mg in solid-solution. Electron microscopy reveals the microstructure of the L12-Al3Zr precipitates, and other precipitates (Mg2Si and Al3Fe) and dispersoids (oxides).

Binding of Phosphate Species to Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ in Aqueous Solution

Phosphate derivatives and their interaction with metal cations are involved in many important biological phenomena, so an accurate characterization of the phosphate-metal interaction is necessary to properly understand the role of phosphate-metal contacts in mediating biological function. Herein, we improved the standard 12-6 Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential via the usage of the 12-6-4 LJ model, which incorporates ion-induced dipole interactions. Via parameter scanning, we fine-tuned the 12-6-4 LJ polarizability values to obtain accurate absolute binding free energies for the phosphate anions H 2 PO 4 – , HPO 4 2– , PO 4 3– coordinating with Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ . First, we modified the phosphate 12-6-4 LJ parameters to reproduce the solvation free energies of the series of phosphate anions using the thermodynamic integration (TI) method. Then, using the potential mean force (PMF) method, the polarizability of the metal-phosphate interaction was obtained. We show that the free energy profiles of phosphate ions coordinated to Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ generally show similar trends at longer metal–phosphate distances, while the absolute binding energy values increased with deprotonation. The resulting parameters demonstrate the flexibility of the 12-6-4 LJ-type nonbonded model and its usefulness in accurately describing cation–anion interactions.

Probing Conformational Evolution and Associated Dynamics of Mg(N(SO 2 CF 3 ) 2 ) 2 ·Dimethoxyethane Adduct Using Solid-State 19 F and 1 H NMR

Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonimide) or TFSI is widely used as a counter anion in electrolyte design due to its structural flexibility and chemical stability. Here we studied the conformational variations and associated dynamics of TFSI in adduct of Mg(TFSI) 2 with dimethoxyethane (DME), a solvate crystalline material using solid-state 1 H and 19 F NMR. TFSI molecular motion in this solvate structure falls within the timescale of the 19 F NMR experiment, yielding spectroscopic signatures for unique TFSI conformers under the coordination environment of Mg 2+ cation. Within the temperature range of -5 to 82 °C, we observe nine distinct TFSI sites in both crystalline and disordered regions using 19 F NMR, reflecting complexity of structural and dynamics of TFS1 anions within solvate structure. The four distinguishable sites in the disordered region for the two CF 3 groups of the same TFSI molecule are identified using chemical shift analysis. The exchange rate constants from site to site are calculated through variable temperature 19 F NMR and two-dimensional (2D) exchange spectroscopy (EXSY) experiments, along with respective activation enthalpies using Eyring's formulation. The flip rate of CF 3 around the S-C bond is estimated as ~ 15 s -1 at 8 °C with ΔH ≠ ~ 22 kJ/mol, but the rotation of the entire TFSI is 4.8 s -1 at 8 °C with a significantly greater ΔH ≠ = 98 ± 10 kJ/mol. Furthermore, the slow conversion of trans to cis conformers at a lower temperature (T ≤ 1 °C) in the crystalline region is monitored, with a conversion rate of ~ 2 x 10 -5 s -1 at -5 °C. Density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations were performed to support further the assignment of experimental chemical shifts, and the activation energy E a = 21.1 kJ/mol obtained for the cis to trans transition is consistent with experimental values. The combined set of 19 F and 1 H under both one-dimensional (1D) and 2D NMR methods demonstrated here can be further used for examining electrode-electrolyte interfaces to probe the motions of various constituents that can enable detailed studies of interfacial processes and dynamics. Ultimately, such studies will aid in the design and discovery of interfacial constructs in which directed defect chemistry, chemical moiety distribution, and nanostructure are employed to drive efficient charge transport.

Ferroelectricity in Atomic Layer Deposited Wurtzite Zinc Magnesium Oxide Zn 1– x Mg x O

Conformal deposition of wurtzite ferroelectrics, which is needed for their use in scaled nonvolatile memories, is challenging using current physical vapor deposition techniques. To overcome the conformality barrier, this work demonstrates ferroelectricity in wurtzite Zn 1− x Mg x O thin films prepared by plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition, which is a non-line-of-sight deposition method. Films ranging in composition from x = 0.00 to x = 0.58 are predominantly wurtzite phase and exhibit a (0001)-texture. Increasing the magnesium content decreases the c/a ratio, increases the optical bandgap energy, increases the piezoelectric response, and enables polarization reversal. Clear polarization switching is demonstrated in 50 nm thick Zn 1− x Mg x O films by piezoresponse force microscopy in compositions containing x = 0.46 and x = 0.58.

Porous Liquids as Electrolyte: A Case Study of Li + and Mg 2+ Ion Transport in Crown Ether-Based Type-II Porous Liquids

Here, we demonstrate crown ether (CE)-based type II porous liquid (PL) electrolytes in which CEs provide internal porosity and are capable of coordinating with Li + and Mg 2+ ions. We investigated the physicochemical properties of the PL electro-lytes with different functional groups and cavity sizes. Among the electrolytes studied, the 12-crown-4 (12C4)-based PL electrolyte exhibited the most enhanced ionic conductivity due to size match between the CE cavity and the Li + ion. Nu-clear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared analyses revealed that addition of CEs reduces the Li + ion–solvent interaction, resulting in the formation of Li-CE complexes. The simulation study clearly showed that the solvated Li + and Mg 2+ ions form complexes with 12C4. The strategy described here using CE-based PLs should be applicable to the design versatile electrolytes for various metal-ion batteries.

High-temperature phonon-mediated superconductivity in monolayer Mg 2 B 4 C 2

A two-dimensional material – Mg 2 B 4 C 2 , belonging to the family of the conventional superconductor MgB 2 , is theoretically predicted to exhibit superconductivity with critical temperature T c estimated in the 47–48 K range (predicted using the McMillian-Allen-Dynes formula) without any tuning of external parameters such as doping, strain, or substrate-induced effects. The origin of such a high intrinsic T c is ascribed to the presence of strong electron-phonon coupling and large density of states at the Fermi level. This system is obtained after replacing the chemically active boron-boron surface layers in a MgB 2 slab by chemically inactive boron-carbon layers. Hence, the surfaces of this material are inert. Our calculations confirm the stability of 2D Mg 2 B 4 C 2 . We also find that the key features of this material remain essentially unchanged when its thickness is increased by modestly increasing the number of inner MgB 2 layers.

Electrical conductivities of (Mg,Fe)O at extreme pressures and implications for planetary magma oceans

During planet formation, planets undergo many impacts that can generate magma oceans. When these crystallize, part of the magma densifies via iron enrichment and migrates to the core–mantle boundary, forming an iron-rich basal magma ocean (BMO). The BMO could generate a dynamo in early Earth and super-Earths if the electrical conductivity of the BMO, which is thought to be sensitive to its Fe content, is sufficiently high. To test this hypothesis, here we conduct laser-driven shock experiments on ferropericlase (Mg x ,Fe 1−x )O (0.95 ≤ x ≤ 1) as an Fe-rich BMO analogue, perform density functional theory molecular dynamics simulations on MgO and calculate the long-term evolution of super-Earths. We find that the d.c. conductivities of MgO and (Mg,Fe)O are indistinguishable between 467 GPa and 1,400 GPa, despite previous predictions. Here, we predict that super-Earths larger than 3–6 Earth masses can produce BMO-driven dynamos that are almost one order of magnitude stronger than core-driven dynamos for several billion years.

Microstructure and properties of additively manufactured Al–Ce–Mg alloys

Additive manufacturing of aluminum alloys is largely dominated by a near-eutectic Al-Si compositions, which are highly weldable, but have mechanical properties that are not competitive with conventional wrought Al alloys. In addition, there is a need for new Al alloys with improved high temperature properties and thermal stability for applications in the automotive and aerospace fields. In this work, we considered laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing of two alloys in the Al–Ce–Mg system, designed as near-eutectic (Al–11Ce–7Mg) and hyper-eutectic (Al–15Ce–9Mg) compositions with respect to the binary L → Al + Al 11 Ce eutectic reaction. The addition of magnesium is used to promote solid solution strengthening. A custom laser scan pattern was used to reduce the formation of keyhole porosity, which was caused by excessive vaporization due to the high vapor pressure of magnesium. The microstructure and tensile mechanical properties of the alloys were characterized in the as-fabricated condition and following hot isostatic pressing. The two alloys exhibit significant variations in solidification structure morphology. These variations in non-equilibrium solidification structure were rationalized using a combination of thermodynamic and thermal modeling. Both alloys showed higher yield strength than AM Al-10Si-Mg for temperatures up to 350 °C and better strength retention at elevated temperatures than additively manufactured Scalmaloy.

White Laue and powder diffraction studies to reveal mechanisms of HCP-to-BCC phase transformation in single crystals of Mg under high pressure

Mechanisms of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) to body-centered cubic (BCC) phase transformation in Mg single crystals are observed using a combination of polychromatic beam Laue diffraction and monochromatic beam powder diffraction techniques under quasi-hydrostatic pressures of up to 58 ± 2 GPa at ambient temperature. Although experiments were performed with both He and Ne pressure media, crystals inevitably undergo plastic deformation upon loading to 40–44 GPa. The plasticity is accommodated by dislocation glide causing local misorientations of up to 1°–2°. The selected crystals are tracked by mapping Laue diffraction spots up to the onset of the HCP to BCC transformation, which is determined to be at a pressure of 56.6 ± 2 GPa. Intensity of the Laue reflections from HCP crystals rapidly decrease but no reflections from crystalline BCC phase are observed with a further increase of pressure. Nevertheless, the powder diffraction shows the formation of 110 BCC peak at 56.6 GPa. The peak intensity increases at 59.7 GPa. Upon the full transformation, a powder-like BCC aggregate is formed revealing the destructive nature of the HCP to BCC transformation in single crystals of Mg.

Mg 2+ ion-catalyzed polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane in battery electrolytes

Electrolyte salts with Mg 2+ and Al 3+ Lewis acidic cations demonstrate polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane. The speed and extent of the reaction depends on coordination of the anion with the Mg 2+ cation catalyst. Weakly coordinating anions such as TFSI - aid faster polymerization while strongly coordinating anions such as ClO 4 - hinder the polymerization.

Coherent ring-current migration of Mg-phthalocyanine probed by time-resolved X-ray circular dichroism

The coherent ring current of Mg-phthalocyanine created by a broad band UV-visible pump pulse shows variation with time, where the ring currents at the corner benzene rings, around the Mg cation and on the outer ring oscillate with different time periods and the current density migrates among these regions. The 7 pairs of E u degenerate excited states populated upon photoexcitation, generate 21 distinct coherent ring currents. We further calculate the time-resolved X-ray circular dichroism (TRXCD) spectrum of the coherences contributing to the ring current obtained by an attosecond X-ray probe pulse resonant with the nitrogen K-edge. A frequency domain TRXCD signal obtained by a Fourier transform of the signal with respect to the pump-probe delay time clearly separates the currents induced by different state pairs.

APOGEE-2S Mg–Al anti-correlation of the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 2298

We present detailed elemental abundances and radial velocities of stars in the metal-poor globular cluster (GC) NGC 2298, based on near-infrared high-resolution ($R$ ~ 22 500) spectra of 12 members obtained during the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2) at Las Campanas Observatory as part of the seventeenth Data Release (DR 17) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV). We employed the Brussels Automatic Code for Characterizing High accuracy Spectra (BACCHUS) software to investigate abundances for a variety of species including α elements (Mg, Si, and Ca), the odd-Z element Al, and iron-peak elements (Fe and Ni) located in the innermost regions of NGC 2298. We find a mean and median metallicity [Fe/H] = -1.76 and -1.75, respectively, with a star-to-star spread of 0.14 dex, which is compatible with the internal measurement errors. Thus, we find no evidence for an intrinsic [Fe/H] abundance spread in NGC 2298. The typical $α$-element enrichment in NGC 2298 is overabundant relative to the Sun, and it follows the trend of other metal-poor GCs. We confirm the existence of an Al-enhanced population in this cluster, which is clearly anti-correlated with Mg, indicating the prevalence of the multiple-population phenomenon in NGC 2298.

Mg and Al-induced phase transformation and stabilization of Ga 2 O 3 -based $\gamma$-phase spinels

Ga 2 O 3 films were deposited on (100) MgAl 2 O 4 spinel substrates at 550, 650, 750, and 850 °C using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition and investigated using x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. A phase-pure γ-Ga 2 O 3 -based material having an inverse spinel structure was formed at 850 °C; a mixture of the γ-phase and β-Ga 2 O 3 was detected in films grown at 750 °C. Only β-Ga 2 O 3 was determined in the films deposited at 650 and 550 °C. A β- to γ-phase transition occurred from the substrate/film interface during growth at 750 °C. The growth and stabilization of the γ-phase at the outset of film growth at 850 °C was affected by the substantial Mg and Al chemical interdiffusion from the MgAl 2 O 4 substrate observed in the energy-dispersive x-ray spectrum. Further, atomic-scale investigations via scanning transmission electron microscopy of the films grown at 750 and 850 °C revealed a strong tetrahedral site preference for Ga and an octahedral site preference for Mg and Al. It is postulated that the occupation of these atoms in these particular sites drives the β-Ga 2 O 3 to γ-phase transition and markedly enhances the thermal stability of the latter phase at elevated temperatures.

Study of the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition in Ce 3– x Mg x Co 9

The Ce 3-x Mg x Co 9 system evolves from a Pauli paramagnetic ground state for x = 0 to a ferromagnetic ground state for x≈0.80 in single-phase, polycrystalline samples [Lamichhane, V. Taufour, A. Palasyuk, Q. Lin, S.L. Budko, and P.C. Canfield, Ce3-xMgxCo9 : transformation of a Pauli paramagnet into a strong permanent magnet, Phys. Rev. Appl. 9 (2018), p. 024023]. In order to better understand this behaviour, single-crystalline samples of Ce 3-x Mg x Co 9 for x = 0.01, 0.16, 0.24, 0.35, 0.43 and 0.50 were grown using the flux growth technique, and electrical transport and magnetic properties were studied. The T C-x phase diagram we infer shows that the system has a quantum phase transition near x = 0.35, transforming to a ferromagnetic ground state.

Two-neutron knockout as a probe of the composition of states in Mg 22 , Al 23 , and Si 24

Simpson and Tostevin proposed that the width and shape of exclusive parallel momentum distributions of the A - 2 residue in direct two-nucleon knockout reactions carry a measurable sensitivity to the nucleon single-particle configurations and their couplings within the wave functions of exotic nuclei. We further report here on the first benchmarks and use of this new spectroscopic tool. Exclusive parallel momentum distributions for states in the neutron-deficient nuclei Mg 22 , Al 23 , and Si 24 populated in such direct two-neutron removal reactions were extracted and compared to predictions combining eikonal reaction theory and shell-model calculations. For the well-known Mg 22 and Al 23 nuclei, measurements and calculations were found to agree, supporting the dependence of the parallel momentum distribution width on the angular momentum composition of the shell-model two-neutron amplitudes. In Si 24 , a level at 3439(9) keV, of relevance for the important Al 23 ( p , γ ) Si 24 astrophysical reaction rate, was confirmed to be the 2 2 + state, whereas the 4 1 + state, expected to be strongly populated in two-neutron knockout, was not observed. This puzzle is resolved by theoretical considerations of the Thomas-Ehrman shift, which also indicates that a previously reported 3471-keV state in Si 24 is, in fact, the ( 0 2 + ) level with one of the largest experimental mirror-energy shifts ever observed.

Ab initio calculation of muon capture on 24 Mg

In this work we study ordinary muon capture (OMC) on 24 Mg from a first-principles perspective. Starting from a particular two- and three-nucleon interaction derived from chiral effective field theory, we use the valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group (VS-IMSRG) framework to construct effective Hamiltonians and muon-capture operators, which nonperturbatively account for many-body physics outside the valence space. Here, the obtained nuclear matrix elements are compared against those from the phenomenological shell model. The impact of including the correlations from the nuclear shell model (NSM) as well as including the induced twobody part is studied in detail. Furthermore, the effects of realistic bound-muon wave function on the operators is studied. Finally, predictions for capture rates to the lowest excited states in 24 Na are given and compared with available data. It is found that the spectroscopic properties of 24 Mg and its OMC daughter 24 Na are fairly well described by both the NSM and VS-IMSRG, and that the effect of the hadronic two-body currents significantly reduces the OMC rates. Both models have some difficulties in matching the measured OMC rates, especially for the 2 + final states. This calls for further studies in other light nuclei with available OMC data.
