Polymeric membrane systems of potential use for battery separators

Two membrane systems were investigated that may have potential use as alkaline battery separators. One system comprises two miscible polymers: a support polymer (e.g., polyvinyl formal) and an ion conductor such as polyacrylic acid. The other system involves a film composed of two immiscible polymers: a conducting polymer (e.g., calcium polyacrylate) suspended in an inert polymer support matrix, polyphenylene oxide. Resistivities in 45-percent potassium hydroxide and qualitative mechanical properties are presented for films comprising various proportions of conducting and support polymers. In terms of these parameters, the results are encouraging for optimum ratios of conducting to support polymers.

Urea transport through composite polyallylamine membranes

Polyallylamine composite reverse osmosis membranes were prepared by plasma polymerization and deposition onto small-pored cellulose acetate/cellulose nitrate films. The polyallylamine coated the porous substrate with a thin uniform polymer film which exhibited water permeability and urea rejection, of interest because of the potential application of reverse osmosis to urine purification in closed environmental systems. The flux of C-14 labeled urea was studied under the influence of osmotic gradients provided by sodium chloride solutions. The urea flux was found to be enhanced by an osmotic pressure gradient in the same direction and diminished, but not prevented, by an opposing osmotic pressure gradient. Consideration is given to the mechanism of the urea transport, as well as to the influence of concentration polarization on the experimental results. The minimization of coupled flow in pores of a critical size range is apparently necessary to improve urea rejection.

Diffusion of hydrogen through platinum membranes at high pressures and temperatures

The diffusion of hydrogen through platinum membranes has been measured at 450, 500, 550 and 600 C at 2000 bar pressure, using the hydrogen sensor technique. Ag + AgCl + 3M HCl was the starting solution inside the platinum tube. Hydrogen diffuses out of the platinum tube into a system containing Fe2O3 + Fe3O4 + H2O; that is, a solution with a fixed hydrogen fugacity. After quench, the drop in hydrogen fugacity inside the platinum tube was calculated from measurements of pH and chloride molality. The hydrogen fugacity is initially roughly proportional to the square root of time. Diffusion constants were calculated from these data by numerical integration.

Study of Membrane Reflector Technology

Very large reflective surfaces are required by future spacecraft for such purposes as solar energy collection, antenna surfaces, thermal control, attitude and orbit control with solar pressure, and solar sailing. The performance benefits in large membrane reflector systems, which may be derived from an advancement of this film and related structures technology, are identified and qualified. The results of the study are reported and summarized. Detailed technical discussions of various aspects of the study are included in several separate technical notes which are referenced.

Tensioning of a belt around a drum using membrane element

An application of the membrane element to the problem of the tensioning of a conveyer belt which wraps around a drum is presented. Two cases were investigated: (1) belt tension increase due to drum edge wear; and (2) material trapped between the drum and the belt. In both cases it was found that the increase in belt tension was due to the additional stretching of the belt resulting from the drum radius change rather than from the transverse deflection of the belt.

Age characteristics of changes in invertase activity of the mucous membrane of the small intestine

Rats of varying ages were subjected to stress from heat, cold, and hydrocortisone injection. Invertase activity in homogenates of small intestine mucous membranes was studied following sacrifice. Invertase activity was low in young animals, but increased sharply in 30 day old ones, remaining at a relatively constant level until old age. The study concludes that the stress hormone (corticosteroids, etc.) levels in the blood, which affects the formation of enteric enzyme levels and activities, and that age related peculiarities in invertase activity are a consequence of altered hormone status and epitheliocyte sensitivity.

Design and performance of compliant thrust bearing with spiral-groove membranes on resilient supports

Novel thrust bearings with spiral-groove flexible membranes mounted on resilient supports were designed and their performance demonstrated. Advantages of surface compliance were combined with the superior load-capacity of the spiral-groove geometry. Loads of 127-150N were supported on an area 42 sq cm, at speeds of 43,000-45,000 rpm and mean clearances of 15-20 microns. Support-worthiness was proved when tested in conjunction with foil journal-bearings and a 19N rotor, excited in a pitching mode by a total unbalance of 43 micron-N.

On minimal surfaces, membranes and compressible flows

The theory, variational formulation and finite element analysis of a class of nonlinear problems arising in optimization, thin membrane deflection and compressible flows are developed. Error estimates are summarized, and representative numerical results are presented. Particular theoretical questions pertaining to the existence and uniqueness of solutions are addressed, and their implications for such applications of finite element analysis as the study of compressible flows indicated.

Nonbonded interactions in membrane active cyclic biopolymers. IV - Cation dependence

Interactions of valinomycin and form of its analogs in several conformations with the central ions Li(+), Na(+), K(+), Rb(+) and Cs(+) are investigated as part of a study of the specific preference of valinomycin for potassium and the mechanisms of carrier-mediated ion transport across membranes. Ion binding energies and conformational potential energies are calculated taking into account polarization energy formulas and repulsive energy between the central ion and the ligand atoms for conformations representing various stages in ion capture and release for each of the two ring chiralities of valinomycin and its analogs. Results allow the prediction of the chirality and conformation most likely to be observed for a given analog, and may be used to synthesize analogs with a desired rigidity or flexibility. The binding energies with the alkali metal cations are found to decrease with increasing ion size, and to be smaller than the corresponding ion hydration energies. It is pointed out that the observed potassium preference may be explainable in terms of differences between binding and hydration energies. Binding energies are also noted to depend on ligand conformation.

Measurement of losses of mesh membrane material for reflector applications with an S-band radiometer

The spatial resolution, the frequency of revisits, and the accuracy requirements for the detection of Earth surface parameters from space force the satellite designers to consider large space structures for microwaves. Some Earth surface parameters are only detectable with radiometers. Because the large reflectors should be much lighter than solid and deployable reflectors, mesh membrane material is considered to be used as the reflector. It is essential to determine the emissivity of the reflecting material even when close to zero to estimate the accuracy of the radiometer measurement. An existing S-band radiometer was used to determine the loss of a 1 sq m pretensioned mesh first in a field experiment and later in a well shielded laboratory set-up. The models for retrieving the emissivity of the mesh are described in detail and the equivalent losses for different mesh positions were calculated.

Conceptual design and analysis of a large antenna utilizing electrostatic membrane management

Conceptual designs and associated technologies for deployment 100 m class radiometer antennas were developed. An electrostatically suspended and controlled membrane mirror and the supporting structure are discussed. The integrated spacecraft including STS cargo bay stowage and development were analyzed. An antenna performance evaluation was performed as a measure of the quality of the membrane/spacecraft when used as a radiometer in the 1 GHz to 5 GHz region. Several related LSS structural dynamic models differing by their stiffness property (and therefore, lowest modal frequencies) are reported. Control system whose complexity varies inversely with increasing modal frequency regimes are also reported. Interactive computer-aided-design software is discussed.

Polyvinyl alcohol membranes as alkaline battery separators

Polyvinly alcohol (PVA) cross-linked with aldehyde reagents yields membranes that demonstrate properties that make them suitable for use as alkaline battery separators. Film properties can be controlled by the choice of cross-linker, cross-link density and the method of cross-linking. Three methods of cross-linking and their effects on film properties are discussed. Film properties can also be modified by using a copolymer of vinyl alcohol and acrylic acid as the base for the separator and cross-linking it similarly to the PVA. Fillers can be incorporated into the films to further modify film properties. Results of separator screening tests and cell tests for several variations of PBA films are discussed.

Electrostatically figured membrane reflectors: An overview

A schematic diagram of the electrostatically figured membrane reflector (EFMR) is presented in Figure 1. Here, active reflector figure control is exercised via electrostatic stresses which operate between the reflector and a second surface called the -command surface. The command surface is located a short distance behind the reflector and is pulled firmly into an approximate paraboloid by a network of guy wires or comparable structure. This same surface supports insulated conducting segments which are individually addressable by dedicated control voltages. The control voltages are, in turn, collectively biased with respect to the reflector. The reflector, tensioned by a rigid rim at the perimeter, is distended toward the command surface by the bias. The resulting command surface potential distribution, and hence the electrostatic stress distribution acting on the reflector, is continuously and rapidly refined via the control voltages so as to produce and maintain a precise parabolic reflector figure. Optical reflector figure measurements provide the data necessary for computer-supervised figure control. Finally, in order to prevent command surface discharging by photons and charged particles, the command surface is completely enclosed by a conducting shroud of which the reflector serves as the front side. Guy wires to the back-side shroud can be used to figure the command surface. The complete shroud is not pictured in Figure 1.

A general diagram for estimating pore size of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis membranes

A slit sieve model has been used to develop a general correlation between the average pore size of the upstream surface of a membrane and the molecular weight of the solute which it retains by better than 80%. The pore size is determined by means of the correlation using the high retention data from an ultrafiltration (UF) or a reverse osmosis (RO) experiment. The pore population density can also be calculated from the flux data via appropriate equations.
