Matched Guiding and Controlled Injection in Dark-Current-Free, 10-GeV-Class, Channel-Guided Laser-Plasma Accelerators

Here we measure the high-intensity laser propagation throughout meter-scale, channel-guided laser-plasma accelerators by adjusting the length of the plasma channel on a shot-by-shot basis, showing high-quality guiding of 500 TW laser pulses over 30 cm in a hydrogen plasma of density n 0 ≈ 1 X 10 17 cm -3 . We observed transverse energy transport of higher-order modes in the first ≈ 12 cm of the plasma channel, followed by quasimatched propagation, and the gradual, dark-current-free depletion of laser energy to the wake. We quantify the laser-to-wake transfer efficiency limitations of currently available petawatt-class lasers and demonstrate via simulation how control over the laser mode can significantly improve beam parameters. Using 21.3 J of laser energy, and triggering localized electron injection, we observed electron bunches with single, quasimonoenergetic peaks up to 9.2 GeV with charge extending beyond 10 GeV.

Cosimulating Integrated Energy Systems With Heterogeneous Digital Twins: Matching a Connected World

Energy system integration promises in-creased resiliency and the unlocking of synergies, while also contributing to our goal of decarbonization. It is enabled by both old and new technologies, glued together with data and digital services. Hydrolyzers, heat pumps, distributed renewable generation, smart buildings, and the digital grid edge are all currently the subject of integration with the power system and the energy sector at large. To plan and operate such a multidisciplinary and multisectoral system properly, insight, tools, and expertise are all needed. Further, this is exactly where the state of the art fails to deliver: tools for integrated energy systems (IESs) are still in their infancy, and many times, even academia treats these sectors separately, producing experts in each of them but not across.

Sparse measurement medical CT reconstruction using multi-fused block matching denoising priors

A major challenge for medical X-ray CT imaging is reducing the number of X-ray projections to lower radiation dosage and reduce scan times without compromising image quality. However these under-determined inverse imaging problems rely on the formulation of an expressive prior model to constrain the solution space while remaining computationally tractable. Traditional analytical reconstruction methods like Filtered Back Projection (FBP) often fail with sparse measurements, producing artifacts due to their reliance on the Shannon-Nyquist Sampling Theorem. Consensus Equilibrium, which is a generalization of Plug and Play, is a recent advancement in Model-Based Iterative Reconstruction (MBIR), has facilitated the use of multiple denoisers are prior models in an optimization free framework to capture complex, non-linear prior information. However, 3D prior modelling in a Plug and Play approach for volumetric image reconstruction requires long processing time due to high computing requirement. Instead of directly using a 3D prior, this work proposes a BM3D Multi Slice Fusion (BM3D-MSF) prior that uses multiple 2D image denoisers fused to act as a fully 3D prior model in Plug and Play reconstruction approach. Our approach does not require training and are thus able to circumvent ethical issues related with patient training data and are readily deployable in varying noise and measurement sparsity levels. In addition, reconstruction with the BM3D-MSF prior achieves similar reconstruction image quality as fully 3D image priors, but with significantly reduced computational complexity. We test our method on clinical CT data and demonstrate that our approach improves reconstructed image quality.

RESONANT MATCHING SECTION FOR CEBAF ENERGY UPGRADE

In order to prevent emittance growth during long stores of the proton beam at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), we need to have some mechanism to provide fast cooling of the dense proton beams. One promising method is coherent electron cooling (CeC), which uses an electron beam to both ?measure? the positions of protons within the bunch and then apply energy kicks which tend to reduce their longitudinal and transverse actions. In this work, we discuss the under- lying physics of this process. We then discuss simulations which constrain the electrons to move only longitudinally in order to perform fast optimizations and long-term track- ing of the bunch evolution, and benchmark these results against fully 3D codes. Additionally, we discuss practical challenges, including the necessity of a high-quality elec- tron beam and sub-micron alignment of the electrons and protons.

Proving the 6d Cardy formula and matching global gravitational anomalies

A Cardy formula for 6d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) conjectured by Di Pietro and Komargodski in [1] governs the universal behavior of the supersymmetric partition function on S^1_\beta \times S^5 S β 1 × S 5 in the limit of small \beta β and fixed squashing of the S^5 S 5 . For a general 6d SCFT, we study its 5d effective action, which is dominated by the supersymmetric completions of perturbatively gauge-invariant Chern-Simons terms in the small \beta β limit. Explicitly evaluating these supersymmetric completions gives the precise squashing dependence in the Cardy formula. For SCFTs with a pure Higgs branch (also known as very Higgsable SCFTs), we determine the Chern-Simons levels by explicitly going onto the Higgs branch and integrating out the Kaluza-Klein modes of the 6d fields on S^1_\beta S β 1 . We then discuss tensor branch flows, where an apparent mismatch between the formula in [1] and the free field answer requires an additional contribution from BPS strings. This ``missing contribution’’ is further sharpened by the relation between the fractional part of the Chern-Simons levels and the (mixed) global gravitational anomalies of the 6d SCFT. We also comment on the Cardy formula for 4d \mathcal{N}=2 𝒩 = 2 SCFTs in relation to Higgs branch and Coulomb branch flows.

Paths Forward for Nuclear Energy: Using a Nationwide Post-Stratified Hierarchical Model to Facilitate Matching of New Nuclear Technologies to Receptive Host Communities

This project was a collaboration between the University of Oklahoma (OU) and the University of Michigan (UMich). The overall objective of the project was to address a critical problem facing the siting of nuclear facilities, where there is no mechanism for incorporating public attitudes at a state and local level into decision-making. Utilizing recent advances in data modeling over local spatial scales, the research team created a state and county level map of public attitudes towards nuclear energy. Current estimates for public acceptance of nuclear technologies primarily exists on a national level, and sub-national estimates of public opinion about reactor siting, research facilities, transport routes, or storage and disposal facilities are very scarce. Model results from this project provide a systematic basis for technology developers to evaluate public acceptance across alternative siting options as a critical component for weighing potential benefit-cost tradeoffs for alternative paths to deploy new nuclear facilities. The project utilized data from the largest database of nuclear attitudes in the US, coupled with Census and elections-related data as well as data on social vulnerability and proximity to current nuclear facilities. In addition to modeling public support, the team also developed an interactive map to showcase results, using an online tool called Public and Local Attitudes about Nuclear Energy Technologies (PLANET). The tool allows technology developers and stakeholders to interact with the model results and better understand variation in support for nuclear facility siting on a state and county level. The interactive nature of the tool also allows users to analyze results in a targeted way, by comparing levels of support across different states and/or counties as desired.

Deep Learning Accelerated History Matching and Forecasting in Geologic CO 2 Sequestration [Slides]

We have successfully developed a predictive workflow for the Geologic CO 2 Sequestration using a deep learning model based on the Fourier Neural Operator. The workflow has high accuracy for predicting pressure & saturation during the injection and post-injection periods and has decent accuracy for predicting water and CO 2 production rates during injection period. It is necessary to train exclusive DNN models for pressure prediction in long term GCS, but for saturation prediction, we can use a single model to predict it.
