Argonne National Laboratory Site Environmental Report for Calendar Year 2024

This report discusses the status and accomplishments of the environmental protection program at Argonne National Laboratory for calendar year 2024. The status of Argonne environmental protection activities with respect to compliance with the various laws and regulations is discussed, along with environmental management, efficiency efforts, environmental corrective actions, and habitat restoration. To evaluate the effects of Argonne operations on the environment, samples of environmental media collected on the site, at the site boundary, and off the Argonne site were analyzed and compared with applicable guidelines and standards. A variety of radionuclides were measured in air, surface water, groundwater, and bottom sediment samples. In addition, chemical constituents in surface water, groundwater, and wastewater were analyzed. External penetrating radiation doses were measured, and the potential for radiation exposure to off-site population groups and on-site members of the public was estimated. Results are interpreted with respect to the origin of radioactive and chemical substances (i.e., natural, Argonne, and other) and are compared with applicable standards intended to protect human health and the environment. A U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) dose calculation methodology, based on International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) recommendations and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) CAP 88 computer code, was used in preparing this report.

The Athena++ Adaptive Mesh Refinement Framework: Design and Magnetohydrodynamic Solvers

The design and implementation of a new framework for adaptive mesh refinement calculations are described. It is intended primarily for applications in astrophysical fluid dynamics, but its flexible and modular design enables its use for a wide variety of physics. The framework works with both uniform and nonuniform grids in Cartesian and curvilinear coordinate systems. It adopts a dynamic execution model based on a simple design called a "task list" that improves parallel performance by overlapping communication and computation, simplifies the inclusion of a diverse range of physics, and even enables multiphysics models involving different physics in different regions of the calculation. We describe physics modules implemented in this framework for both nonrelativistic and relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). These modules adopt mature and robust algorithms originally developed for the Athena MHD code and incorporate new extensions: support for curvilinear coordinates, higher-order time integrators, more realistic physics such as a general equation of state, and diffusion terms that can be integrated with super-time-stepping algorithms. The modules show excellent performance and scaling, with well over 80% parallel efficiency on over half a million threads. The source code has been made publicly available.

The Very High n Rydberg Series of Ar^16+ in Alcator C-Mod Tokamak Plasmas

X-ray transitions of the very high-n Rydberg series in Ar^16+ have been observed from Alcator C-Mod tokamak plasmas. Individual emission lines up to 1s16p - 1s^2 have been resolved and the central chord line brightnesses with principal quantum number n between 7 and 16 are generally found to decay as 1/n^alpha, with alpha slightly larger than 3. In the plasma periphery, emission from 1s9p - 1s^2 and 1s10p - 1s^2 are found to be significantly enhanced relative to this decrease, indicative of selected population of these levels through charge exchange between background neutral deuterium in the ground state and Ar^17+. An unresolved feature between the wavelengths of 1s27p - 1s^2 and 1s30p - 1s^2 is also present, which arises through charge exchange with neutral deuterium in the n^* = 3 excited state. The brightnesses of transitions populated by charge exchange are spatially up/down asymmetric, with an excess on the side of the magnetic surface X-point. The relative brightness of the unresolved very high-n feature compared to 1s7p - 1s^2 is found to increase with electron temperature and decrease with electron density. Simulations of line emission just on the long wavelength side of the Ar^16$ ionization limit indicate that the principal quantum number decay exponent is closer to alpha = 4 at very high n. The brightness dependence on n below 16 is in excellent agreement with calculations from the Flexible Atomic Code package.

Two carrier communication system with single transmitter

A pulse code modulated communication system is disclosed for transmitting two subcarrier modulated carriers from a single transmitter comprising two channels for phase modulating the two carriers independently. The modulating subcarriers are independently modulated by data and/or pseudonoise (PN) codes as desired. The modulated carriers are switched alternately to the single transmitter in synchronism with operation of a PN code generator when PN code modulation is present, as for ranging.

Editing of EIA coded, numerically controlled, machine tool tapes

Editing of numerically controlled (N/C) machine tool tapes (8-level paper tape) using an interactive graphic display processor is described. A rapid technique required for correcting production errors in N/C tapes was developed using the interactive text editor on the IMLAC PDS-ID graphic display system and two special programs resident on disk. The correction technique and special programs for processing N/C tapes coded to EIA specifications are discussed.

Effects of compressibility on boundary-layer turbulence

A series of turbulence measurements in a subsonic compressible turbulent boundary-layer flow in the Mach number range of 0.1 to 0.7 is described. Measurements include detailed surveys of the turbulence intensities and Reynolds shear stresses, and other quantities such as the turbulent kinetic energy. These data are examined to bring out the effects of compressibility and show that the stream-wise and transverse fluctuations and the turbulent shear stress follow a universal scaling law. A preliminary attempt is made to examine some of the assumptions made in turbulence models commonly used in numerical codes for the calculation of compressible flows.

Aeroelastic stability analysis of the AD-1 manned oblique-wing aircraft

The AD-1 manned flight test program was conducted to evaluate the stability, control and handling characteristics of oblique wing aircraft. The results of the aeroelastic stability analysis are presented for both the wing alone and the wing with ailerons. A comparison was made between the results obtained using the traditional k-method of flutter analysis and the results using the PK or British method of flutter analysis. Studies were performed using the latest version of the NASTRAN computer code as well as the PASS/FLUT program.

Incoherent scatter radar observations of irregular structure in mid-latitude sporadic E layers

The basic experiments used phase-coded pulses to record electron density profiles with a resolution of 600 m in range and 300 m in horizontal extent, while scanning in azimuth. Data from incoherent scatter radar were compared with simultaneous ionosonde observations. Observations of sporadic E layers by incoherent scatter radar were discussed in terms of the effects of the neutral wind system acting on metallic ions. Several features were noted in the data, which support the wind shear mechanism of layer formation. The sporadic E layers often contained a pronounced small-scale structure, especially at times when partially transparent echoes were observed by the ionosonde. Under specific conditions, the ions in a meteor trail can be converged by a shear in the neutral wind into a relatively small irregularity at the center of a sporadic E layer.

Combustion: Structural interaction in a viscoelastic material

The effect of interaction between combustion processes and structural deformation of solid propellant was considered. The combustion analysis was performed on the basis of deformed crack geometry, which was determined from the structural analysis. On the other hand, input data for the structural analysis, such as pressure distribution along the crack boundary and ablation velocity of the crack, were determined from the combustion analysis. The interaction analysis was conducted by combining two computer codes, a combustion analysis code and a general purpose finite element structural analysis code.

The correlation of the output of a binary convolutional encoder

In this paper we discuss the correlation properties of the output of a binary convolutional encoder. We consider both random statistically independent inputs and first-order Markov inputs. It is shown that for random inputs, the ensemble average of the product of the outputs of a convolutional encoder taken two at a time is always either 0 or 1, and that for almost all good codes the ensemble average is always 0.

High-altitude-resolution stratospheric measurements with the Arecibo 2380-MHz radar

The 2380-MHz planetary radar of the Arecibo Observatory and the 30-m interferometer antenna at Higuialles, Puerto Rico, have been instrumented as a bistatic radar for stratospheric turbulence research studies. The average power of the transmitter is 400 kW, and it uses the 300-m Arecibo spherical reflector. A vertical resolution of 30 m has been achieved by means of a novel continuous pseudorandom phase coding scheme. Preliminary results obtained with the system are presented. The thickness and internal structure of turbulent stratospheric layers have been resolved for the first time. The potential of the instrument in assessing the role of turbulence in the vertical transport of tracers, contaminants, and momentum is discussed.
