Analysis of parton distributions in a pion with Bézier parametrizations

We explore the role of parametrizations for nonperturbative QCD functions in global analyses, with a specific application to extending a phenomenological analysis of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the charged pion realized in the xFitter fitting framework. The parametrization dependence of PDFs in our pion fits substantially enlarges the uncertainties from the experimental sources estimated in the previous analyses. We systematically explore the parametrization dependence by employing a novel technique to automate generation of polynomial parametrizations for PDFs that makes use of Bézier curves. This technique is implemented in a ++ module that is included in the xFitter program. Our analysis reveals that the sea and gluon distributions in the pion are not well disentangled, even when considering measurements in leading-neutron deep inelastic scattering. For example, the pion PDF solutions with a vanishing gluon and large quark sea are still experimentally allowed, which elevates the importance of ongoing lattice and nonperturbative QCD calculations, together with the planned pion scattering experiments, for conclusive studies of the pion structure. Observation of Magnon Polarization

We measure the mode-resolved direction of the precessional motion of the magnetic order, i.e.,magnon polarization, via the chiral term of inelastic polarized neutron scattering spectra. The magnon polarization is a unique and unambiguous signature of magnets and is important in spintronics, affecting thermodynamic properties such as the magnitude and sign of the spin Seebeck effect. However, it has never been directly measured in any material until this work. The observation of both signs of magnon polarization in Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 also gives direct proof of its ferrimagnetic nature. The experiments agree very well with atomistic simulations of the scattering cross section.

Magnetic properties of the quasi-one-dimensional S = 1 spin chain antiferromagnet BaNi Te 2 O 7

We report a quasi-one-dimensional S=1 spin chain compound BaNiTe 2 O 7 . This magnetic system has been investigated by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron powder diffraction. These results indicate that BaNiTe 2 O 7 develops a short-range magnetic correlation around T ~ 22K. With further cooling, an antiferromagnetic phase transition is observed at T N ~ 5.4K. Neutron powder diffraction revealed antiferromagnetic noncollinear order with a commensurate propagation vector k = (1/2,1,0). The refined magnetic moment size of Ni 2+ at 1.5 K is 1.84 μB , and its noncollinear spin texture is confirmed by first-principles calculations. In conclusion, inelastic neutron-scattering results and density functional theory calculations confirmed the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the spin systems.

Dynamical moment fragmentation in the all-in all-out pyrochlore Nd 2 ⁢Sn 2⁢ O 7

We report single crystal neutron spectroscopy and bulk characterization on hydrothermally grown Nd 2 Sn 2 O 7 , revealing magnetic moment fragmentation embedded within the all-in–all-out ordered state. The spectra reveal a nearly flat band with pinch-point momentum dependence accompanied by dispersive branches that produce half-moon features across multiple Brillouin zones. These defining signatures are captured quantitatively by a minimal dipolar-octupolar spin Hamiltonian, demonstrating excellent agreement between experiment and theory. The higher flat-mode energy helps account for the absence of dynamical interference in prior μSR studies, while the lack of any photon-like excitation imposes strict constraints on the proposed Coulombic antiferromagnet scenario. Furthermore, our results extend moment fragmentation to Nd 2 Sn 2 O 7 and identify it as a clean, tractable platform for quantitative exploration of emergent gauge field physics in frustrated magnets.

Spin Dynamics of Triple-𝐐 Magnetic Orderings in a Triangular Lattice: Implications for Multi-𝐐 Orderings in General Two-Dimensional Lattices

Multi-𝐐 magnetic structures on two-dimensional (2D) lattices provide a key route to realizing topological physics in 2D magnetism. A major experimental challenge is to unambiguously confirm their formation by excluding the possibility of topologically trivial multidomain single- or double-𝐐 magnetic orders, which cannot be distinguished using conventional diffraction techniques. Here, we propose that long-wavelength spin dynamics offers a universal diagnostic for triangular lattices: Triple-𝐐 orders that preserve rotational symmetry and single- or double-𝐐 orders that break it exhibit qualitatively distinct anisotropies in their Goldstone-mode velocities, stemming from fundamental differences in their underlying spin configurations. We validate this concept using the metallic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Co 0.325 ⁢TaS 2 , which hosts both a stripe-type single-𝐐 state and a triple-𝐐 tetrahedral ordering at different temperatures. Using inelastic neutron-scattering and spin dynamics simulations, we first refine the spin Hamiltonian by fitting the paramagnetic excitation spectra, allowing us to develop an unbiased model independent of magnetic ordering. We then show that the observed velocity profiles of the Goldstone modes agree with the high-temperature model’s predictions: markedly anisotropic for the single-𝐐 phase and near isotropic for the triple-𝐐 phase. Importantly, this contrast persists across various exchange parameters, highlighting its model-independent nature and suggesting potential applicability to other 2D lattice systems. Beyond the long-wavelength regime, we present a substantial discrepancy between the measured and simulated magnon spectra exclusively in the triple-𝐐 phase. We attribute this discrepancy to magnon energy renormalization arising from order-of-magnitude-enhanced magnon-magnon interactions in the triple-𝐐 phase, due to its noncollinear configuration. This work provides universal insight into the dynamical properties of topological multi-𝐐 magnetic orderings in 2D lattice structures, offering a broadly applicable diagnostic to distinguishing them from topologically trivial single- or double-𝐐 counterparts. The unequivocal confirmation of the triple-𝐐 structure in Co 0.325 ⁢TaS 2 further establishes it as a prominent material platform for exploring topological spin textures in the genuine 2D limit.

High-Pressure Hydrofullerites

This paper is a brief summary of the results of long-term experimental studies of C 60 H x hydrofullerites with a hydrogen content of up to x ~ 60 or more, obtained by loading C 60 fullerites with hydrogen at pressures up to 9 GPa and temperatures up to 500°C. Basically, this is an overview of already published data. Some results for hydrofullerites with compositions of x ~ 60 and x ~ 90 are presented for the first time.

Lifetimes of low-lying levels in 158 Gd

The low-lying structure of the well-deformed nucleus 158 Gd has been revisited to elucidate the nature of the low-lying states in 158 Gd. Earlier (p, t) studies identified numerous 0 + states below 4.3 MeV, prompting questions about whether these states correspond to collective vibrations or shape coexistence. New and previously reported (n, n' γ) measurements are combined, including γ-γ coincidences, excitation functions, and angular distributions, to extract lifetimes and transition probabilities for 44 excited states up to 2.7 MeV, including 32 previously unmeasured levels. Our results confirm or revise γ-ray placements and provide detailed transition strengths, revealing both weakly collective and strongly enhanced B(E2) and B(E1) transition probabilities. In particular, a tentative 0 + state at 2437.8 keV exhibits a strong interband B(E2) transition, which may be a candidate for a possible two-phonon (ββ) excitation. Systematic comparisons with neighboring Gd isotopes, Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov, and interacting-boson model predictions suggest that the first excited 0 + state in 158 Gd is predicted to be a β-vibration, although it is weakly collective.
