Advanced Human-System Interface Risk Analysis Based on Redundancy-guided Systems-theoretic Hazard Analysis and Human Reliability Analysis

Human-system interfaces (HSIs) play an important role in enabling operators to communicate with the nuclear power plant (NPP) side. Getting the information required to understand a NPP’s current status or perform necessary actions for responding to a given operational context are representative operator tasks performed using HSIs. To date, HSIs have been mainly evaluated in the context of human reliability analysis (HRA). However, the current HSI evaluation that occurs during HRA may be challengeable on two fronts: (1) reflecting the unique characteristics of HSI systems and (2) considering situations in which HSIs are poorly operated due to software/hardware malfunctions. Accordingly, this study proposes an approach for specifically evaluating HSIs for digital instrumentation and controls (DI&C) systems, using Redundancy-guided Systems-theoretic Hazard Analysis (RESHA) and HRA. RESHA is a method for analyzing DI&C systems with redundancy features. In this study, we investigate how HSIs are evaluated in existing HRA methods, and what challenges exist in the current approaches. To better evaluate HSIs for DI&C systems, this study modifies the existing HSI evaluation process by additionally modeling the HSI back- and front- ends. In this paper, a HSI fault tree for the APR1400 DI&C system is introduced through a piping and instrumentation diagram. It then touches upon what aspects of the suggested method must be further researched.

OPER: Optimality-Guided Embedding Table Parallelization for Large-scale Recommendation Model

With the sharp increasing volume of user data, Deep Learning Recommendation Model (DLRM) becomes an indispensable infrastructure in large technology companies. However, large-scale DLRM on the multi-GPU platform is still inefficient due to unbalanced workload partitioning and intensive inter-GPU communication. To this end, we propose OPER, an OPtimality guided Embedding table placement for large-scale Recommendation model training and inference. OPER explores the potential of mitigating remote memory access latency in DLRM through fine-grained embedding table placement. Specifically, OPER proposes a theoretical modeling that builds up the relationship between EMT placement and the embedding communication latency in both training and inference. OPER proves the NP hardness of finding the optimal embedding table placement and proposes a heuristic algorithm that yields near optimal placement. OPER implements a SHMEM-based embedding table training system and a unified embedding index mapping to support fine-grained embedding table sharding and placement. Comprehensive experiments reveal that OPER achieves on average 3.4× and 5.1× speedup on training and inference respectively over state-of-the-art DLRM frameworks.

Decarbonizing Building Thermal Systems: A How-to Guide for Heat Pump Systems and Beyond

Buildings account for a substantial portion of carbon emissions, primarily due to the widespread use of fossil fuels in heating systems. Decarbonization of heating is essential to meet climate targets and reduce the environmental impact of buildings. Heat pumps are capable of leveraging renewable energy sources and can provide heating and cooling in an energy-efficient manner. By leveraging heat pump technology, buildings can significantly reduce their carbon footprint, minimize energy consumption, and decrease their reliance on fossil fuels. The design and construction community plays a pivotal role in facilitating the transition to heat pump systems for heating and cooling. However, this transition requires specialized knowledge and expertise. This resource was developed for architects, engineers, and contractors in response to an industry need for a comprehensive technical resource that guides them through the intricacies of heat pump system design, installation, and maintenance. This resource provides detailed information on system sizing, selection of appropriate heat systems, heat sources, and integration with existing building systems. Moreover, it emphasizes best practices for ensuring operational efficiency, system longevity, and reliability. The development of this recourse was a collaborative effort between NREL/DOE Better Buildings Design and Construction Allies and ASHRAE Task Force for Building Decarbonization. This resource is composed of two complimentary portions that will be completed and released on separate time frames. The first portion will be completed and released in 2023, while the second portion will be released in 2024.

Analysis as a Key Guiding Tool for Waste Carbon Utilization

Over a billion metric tons of waste and biomass are projected to be available in a future mature market in the United States. These resources represent an opportunity to decouple chemical and polymer production from conventional fossil fuel feedstocks, but such a broad solution space can also make for challenging decision-making. This talk will provide researchers with an introduction to key analysis techniques such as techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, and material flow analysis: how they are conducted and how they can be used to benchmark the costs, environmental impacts, and circularity of new innovations as well as to identify opportunities for prioritization and optimization. Using a series of examples related to plastic recycling and chemical manufacturing, we will explore how analysis can guide where and how to leverage waste carbon in supply chains towards a future circular economy.

A Primer on Using Analysis to Guide Plastic Circularity

BOTTLE, funded by DOE's Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technologies Office and Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), conducts analysis-guided R&D to change the way we recycle plastics. But what does analysis really mean? In this webinar, BOTTLE Analysis Co-Lead Dr. Taylor Uekert, a researcher with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), will introduce key analysis techniques such as techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, and environmental justice evaluation. Relevant to both analysts and non-analysts, Dr. Uekert will cover the basics of analysis techniques and discuss how these methods are conducted and interpreted. She will provide examples from the BOTTLE portfolio demonstrating their use in benchmarking and optimizing the costs and environmental impacts of new innovations in plastic redesign and recycling. If you are working in the plastics recycling field - from experimental work to analysis to community-focused projects - you won't want to miss this talk. The webinar will end with a Q&A session.

CritView User’s Guide Rev. 2

This document serves as a user’s guide for the CritView code, version 1.05. It supersedes the previous revision (Rev. 1), which was applicable to version 1.04 of CritView. This release of CritView also includes version 1.09 of the database, which replaces version 1.08. The CritView code is used as an electronic equivalent of a nuclear criticality handbook (e.g., ARH-600). This code takes an electronic data library and allows the user to plot data as needed. This approach has two distinct advantages over a paper handbook. First, the database can be easily expanded to include additional data sources (e.g., other handbooks, configurations, or modeling techniques). Secondly, the code provides flexibility by allowing the user to easily change the units and parameters of the plots.

Reductive Analysis with Compiler-Guided Large Language Models for Input-Centric Code Optimizations

Input-centric program optimization aims to optimize code by considering the relations between program inputs and program behaviors. Despite its promise, a long-standing barrier for its adoption is the difficulty of automatically identifying critical features of complex inputs. This paper introduces a novel technique, reductive analysis through compiler-guided Large Language Models (LLMs), to solve the problem through a synergy between compilers and LLMs. It uses a reductive approach to overcome the scalability and other limitations of LLMs in program code analysis. The solution, for the first time, automates the identification of critical input features without heavy instrumentation or profiling, cutting the time needed for input identification by 44× (or 450× for local LLMs), reduced from 9.6 hours to 13 minutes (with remote LLMs) or 77 seconds (with local LLMs) on average, making input characterization possible to be integrated into the workflow of program compilations. Optimizations on those identified input features show similar or even better results than those identified by previous profiling-based methods, leading to optimizations that yield 92.6% accuracy in selecting the appropriate adaptive OpenMP parallelization decisions, and 20-30% performance improvement of serverless computing while reducing resource usage by 50-60%.
