A Thermal Review of the Sample Cartridge Assembly (SCA) Gravitational Effect of Distortion in Sintering (GEDS) Experiment Flight Processing
NASA’s Sample Cartridge Assembly (SCA) first flight experiment, Gravitational Effect of Distortion in Sintering (GEDS), was processed on the International Space Station (ISS) between 2019 and 2020. The SCA was heated in the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Low Gradient Furnace (LGF) that is housed inside the Material Science Research Rack (MSRR) located in the U.S. Laboratory Module. This summary will give a review of the design and flight experiment development for the GEDS SCA. It describes flight processing and the role of thermal engineering support. Lessons learned and future Principle Investigators (PI) will be discussed.

STUDY OF PURIFICATION OF WATER FROM BIOLOGICAL WASTE.
All the recent data accumulated for the recovery of potable water from metabolic waste have been obtained from the accordian pleated self-heating catalyst. Potable water was obtained in the preliminary runs. Optical pyrometer readings of the furnace temperature were obtained through the side wall of the quartz reactor tube. No further conclusions have been made regarding the correlations between the low pH and high flow rate of the original unit.
Angular glass tubing drawn from round tubing
Round glass tubing softened in a furnace is drawn over a shaped plug or mandel to form shapes with other than a circular cross section. Irregularly shaped tubing is formed without limitations on tube length or wall thickness.

Effects of growth parameters and deposition zone geometry on boron carbide whiskers produced in graphite resistance furnace - filament synthesis
The potential for cobalt-tungsten superalloys.
Cobalt-tungsten superalloy for space power systems, vacuum furnaces and turbojet engines, emphasizing stress rupture and tensile test results
Coiled sheet metal strip opens into tubular configuration
Copper alloy is converted into a spring material that can be rolled into a compact coil which will spontaneously open to form a tube in the long direction of the strip. The copper alloy is passed through a furnace at a prescribed temperature while restraining the strip in the desired tubular configuration.
Auxiliary coil controls temperature of RF induction heater
Auxiliary coil controls the temperature of an RF induction furnace that is powered by a relatively unstable RF generator. Manual or servoed adjustments of the relative position of the auxiliary coil, which is placed in close proximity to the RF coil, changes the looseness of the RF coil and hence the corresponding heating effect of its RF field.
Mounting facilitates removal and installation of flame-detector rods
Flame-detector-rod holder is easily removed from the wall of a gas-fired furnance for maintenance or replacement of the detector rod without requiring shutdown of the furnace. The holder consists of an externally threaded outer bushing, a sleeve which is held inside the outer bushing with a set screw, and a detector rod assembly which screws into the sleeve.
Modified thermocouple is effective from minus 250 deg to 5000 deg F
Modified, commercially available thermocouple which measures the temperature of a spacecraft heat shield, is capable of continuous measurement in the range of minus 250 deg to 5000 deg F. The modified thermocouples may be used inside metal treating furnaces in high temperature technology, and in certain corrosive environments.
Braze alloy holds bonding strength over wide temperature range
Copper-based quaternary alloys of the solid solution type is used for vacuum furnace brazing of large stainless steel components at a maximum temperature of 1975 deg F. The alloy has high bonding strength and good ductility over a temperature range extending from the cryogenic region to approximately 800 deg F.
