One-dimensional focusing X-ray telescope for stellar X-ray astronomy

A one-dimensional X-ray telescope of the Kirkpatrick-Baez design is described. The instrument consists of a grazing-incidence X-ray telescope and a multiwire proportional counter. The optics were provided with a gold reflecting surface to yield an energy response from below 0.25 to above 4.0 keV. The angular resolution of the system is 6 min by 9.5 deg over a 1.1 deg by 9.5 deg field of view.

Double-focusing mass spectrometer

Device uses lighter, easily alined, magnet assembly to provide field required to interact with ion beam. It has no separate duct; instead, evacuated duct is formed by pole pieces which support vacuum pump. Magnetic gap and magnet assembly are reduced from 4.64 to 2.54 mm and from 2.4 to 1.5 kg, respectively.

The effect of adiabatic focusing upon charged particle propagation in random magnetic fields

Charged particles propagating along the diverging lines of force of a spatially inhomogeneous guiding field were considered as they are scattered by random fields. Their longitudinal transport is described in terms of the eigenfunctions of a Sturm-Liouville operator incorporating the effect of adiabatic focussing along with that of scattering. The relaxation times and characteristic velocities are graphed and tabulated. The particle density is evaluated as a function of space and time for two different regimes. In the first regime (relatively weak focussing), a diffusive mode of propagation is dominant but coherent modes are also dominant. In the second regime (strong focussing), diffusion does not occur and the propagation is purely coherent. This supercoherent mode corresponds exactly to the so-called scatter-free propagation of kilovolt solar flare electrons. On a larger scale, focussed transport provides an interpretation of many observed characteristics of extragalactic radio sources.

RPRV research focus on HiMAT

A review is presented of the F-15 Remotely Piloted Research Vehicle (RPRV) project. The F-15 RPRV is air-launched from a B-52 at 50,000 ft. Following launch a series of research maneuvers are performed during an unpowered descent to a recovery altitude. Another RPRV program considered is the Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology (HiMAT) program. This program is designed to use RPRVs to speed the technology transition from wind tunnel to flight and to reduce the cost of aeronautical experiments. It is pointed out that HiMAT will make extensive use of composite materials.

Electron kinematics in a plasma focus

The results of numerical integrations of the three-dimensional relativistic equations of motion of electrons subject to given electric and magnetic fields are presented. Fields due to two different models are studied: (1) a circular distribution of current filaments, and (2) a uniform current distribution; both the collapse and the current reduction phases are studied in each model. Decreasing current in the uniform current model yields 100 keV electrons accelerated toward the anode and, as for earlier ion computations, provides general agreement with experimental results.

Random sampling adaptively focusing synthetic aperture radar

A high resolution narrow angle of view imaging radar system is considered that employs an airborne synthetic aperture of 600 meters operating at X-band to produce a beamwidth of approximately 0.05 mr. This system differs from a conventional SAR in that only a smaller number of wavefront samples, spaced randomly over the aperture are processed, and adaptive beamforming with open loop scanning is used. As a result, the processing requirements are reduced to within the capability of present day small computer technology, and the tolerance on flight stability is loosened by about 100:1. The system is described and initial analysis and evaluation results are presented.

Electrostatically focused intensified charge coupled devices

Work performed to develop intensified charge coupled devices (ICCDs) is presented. Four ICCDs, containing 100 x 160 arrays, were fabricated. Electron gains up to 3200 at 15 keV were achieved. Photocathode sensitivities ranged from 190 to 410 micro A/lumen. Dark currents varied from 11 nA/sq cm to 37 nA/sq cm. There was serious concern about the reliability of the bonding scheme for ICCDs due to occassional bond failure. Two solutions to this problem were developed. One involved a modification of the existing bonding technique, and the other was the development of a protected bond pad employing a barrier metal between the aluminum metallization and the gold bond wire. An accumulation process was characterized with respect to its most critical variable. This characterization led to the achievement of reproducible spectral response and the discovery and elimination of dark current increase associated with this process.

Solar thermal power systems point-focusing distributed receiver /PFDR/ technology - A project description

The goal of the Project is to support the industrial development of PFDR technology that will provide favorable life-cycle costs per unit of electrical or thermal energy produced. The technology will be made available in the early 1980s for applications project experiments. PFDR systems utilize concentrator dishes to furnish energy to their own individual receivers and power conversion subsystems. Initial effort is with steam Rankine and gas Brayton cycles. Periodic assessments will be made to confirm or change the cycles initially selected. Subsystems will be designed, fabricated and tested together in modules as appropriate. This paper describes PFDR systems briefly, outlines the project goals and organization, discusses the plans and current status of the project, and lists the benefits of PFDR technology concepts.

Solar receiver performance of point focusing collector system

The solar receiver performance of cavity receivers and external receivers used in dispersed solar power systems was evaluated for the temperature range 300-1300 C. Several parameters of receiver and concentrator are examined. It was found that cavity receivers are generally more efficient than external receivers, especially at high temperatures which require a large heat transfer area. The effects of variation in the ratio of receiver area to aperture area are considered.

Diffractoid grating configuration for X-ray and ultraviolet focusing

An aspheric grating is described which is operable to image local or distant point sources sharply in a designated wavelength, i.e., produce a perfectly stigmatic image in the given wavelength at grazing angles of incidence. The grating surface comprises a surface of revolution defined by a curve which does not have a constant radius of curvature but is defined by a nonlinear differential equation.

Approaches to adaptive digital control focusing on the second order modal descriptions of large, flexible spacecraft dynamics

The widespread modal analysis of flexible spacecraft and recognition of the poor a priori parameterization possible of the modal descriptions of individual structures have prompted the consideration of adaptive modal control strategies for distributed parameter systems. The current major approaches to computationally efficient adaptive digital control useful in these endeavors are explained in an original, lucid manner using modal second order structure dynamics for algorithm explication. Difficulties in extending these lumped-parameter techniques to distributed-parameter system expansion control are cited.
