Molecular tori in Seyfert galaxies - Feeding the monster and hiding it

The principal properties of the tori of gas which surround Seyfert nuclei are discussed. The internal state of the clouds and their size distribution function are examined, and it is shown that the Jeans mass scale results in clouds which are individually sufficiently opaque to block out the nucleus, and that the balance of processes which controls their size distribution function also forces the covering factor to be of the order of or greater than unity. Where the gravitational potential is dominated by stars, cloud-cloud collisions keep the molecular clouds close to the equatorial plane. Stirring by stellar processes is never strong enough to compete with collisional losses. The position of the inner edge of the torus is determined by a balance between the inward flow of clouds and the rate at which the nuclear continuum can evaporate them.

Neural network based feed-forward high density associative memory

A novel thin film approach to neural-network-based high-density associative memory is described. The information is stored locally in a memory matrix of passive, nonvolatile, binary connection elements with a potential to achieve a storage density of 10 to the 9th bits/sq cm. Microswitches based on memory switching in thin film hydrogenated amorphous silicon, and alternatively in manganese oxide, have been used as programmable read-only memory elements. Low-energy switching has been ascertained in both these materials. Fabrication and testing of memory matrix is described. High-speed associative recall approaching 10 to the 7th bits/sec and high storage capacity in such a connection matrix memory system is also described.

Compound-taper feed horn for NASA 70-m antennas

A novel X-band feedhorn was designed for the Deep Space Network (DSN) 70-meter antennas. The feedhorn is a compound-taper structure consisting of a corrugated flared section and a corrugated straight section. This feedhorn is designed to closely imitate the characteristics of the standard feedhorn, while providing the proper phase center location, without adding any significant loss to the system. The use of the existing feedhorn and the ease of manufacturing the corrugated straight section have resulted in major overall cost savings.

Feasibility study of a synthesis procedure for array feeds to improve radiation performance of large distorted reflector antennas

Surface errors on parabolic reflector antennas degrade the overall performance of the antenna. Space antenna structures are difficult to build, deploy and control. They must maintain a nearly perfect parabolic shape in a harsh environment and must be lightweight. Electromagnetic compensation for surface errors in large space reflector antennas can be used to supplement mechanical compensation. Electromagnetic compensation for surface errors in large space reflector antennas has been the topic of several research studies. Most of these studies try to correct the focal plane fields of the reflector near the focal point and, hence, compensate for the distortions over the whole radiation pattern. An alternative approach to electromagnetic compensation is presented. The proposed technique uses pattern synthesis to compensate for the surface errors. The pattern synthesis approach uses a localized algorithm in which pattern corrections are directed specifically towards portions of the pattern requiring improvement. The pattern synthesis technique does not require knowledge of the reflector surface. It uses radiation pattern data to perform the compensation.

Static feed water electrolysis subsystem development

This disclosure is directed to an electrolysis cell forming hydrogen and oxygen at spaced terminals. The anode terminal is porous and able to form oxygen within the cell and permit escape of the gaseous oxygen through the anode and out through a flow line in the presence of backpressure. Hydrogen is liberated in the cell at the opposing solid metal cathode which is permeable to hydrogen but not oxygen so that the migratory hydrogen formed in the cell is able to escape from the cell. The cell is maintained at an elevated pressure so that oxygen liberated by the cell is delivered at elevated pressure without pumping to raise the pressure of the oxygen.

Plasma gun with coaxial powder feed and adjustable cathode

An improved plasma gun coaxially injects particles of ceramic materials having high melting temperatures into the central portion of a plasma jet. This results in a more uniform and higher temperature and velocity distribution of the sprayed particles. The position of the cathode is adjustable to facilitate optimization of the performance of the gun wherein grains of the ceramic material are melted at lower power input levels.

Nonplanar linearly tapered slot antenna with balanced microstrip feed

A nonplanar linearly tapered slot antenna (LTSA) has been fabricated and tested at frequencies from 8 to 32 giga-Hz. The LTSA is excited by a broadband balanced microstrip transformer. The measured results include the input term return loss as well as the radiation pattern of the antenna.

Microwave characterization of slotline on high resistivity silicon for antenna feed network

Conventional silicon wafers have low resistivity and consequently unacceptably high value of dielectric attenuation constant. Microwave circuits for phased array antenna systems fabricated on these wafers therefore have low efficiency. By choosing a silicon substrate with sufficiently high resistivity it is possible to make the dielectric attenuation constant of the interconnecting microwave transmission lines approach those of GaAs or InP. In order for this to be possible, the transmission lines must be characterized. In this presentation, the effective dielectric constant (epsilon sub eff) and attenuation constant (alpha) of a slotline on high resistivity (5000 to 10 000 ohm-cm) silicon wafer will be discussed. The epsilon sub eff and alpha are determined from the measured resonant frequencies and the corresponding insertion loss of a slotline ring resonator. The results for slotline will be compared with microstrip line and coplanar waveguide.

Feed-forward volume rendering algorithm for moderately parallel MIMD machines

Algorithms for direct volume rendering on parallel and vector processors are investigated. Volumes are transformed efficiently on parallel processors by dividing the data into slices and beams of voxels. Equal sized sets of slices along one axis are distributed to processors. Parallelism is achieved at two levels. Because each slice can be transformed independently of others, processors transform their assigned slices with no communication, thus providing maximum possible parallelism at the first level. Within each slice, consecutive beams are incrementally transformed using coherency in the transformation computation. Also, coherency across slices can be exploited to further enhance performance. This coherency yields the second level of parallelism through the use of the vector processing or pipelining. Other ongoing efforts include investigations into image reconstruction techniques, load balancing strategies, and improving performance.

Feasibility study of a synthesis procedure for array feeds to improve radiation performance of large distorted reflector antennas

The manpower on this effort was reduced during this reporting period. Activity in the past six months is summarized. The Type 1 antenna is complete and documentation is in final phases. The Type 2 antenna design is complete and a journal article was prepared and was accepted for publication in EEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. The spherical antenna configurations are complete and a journal article will appear in the June 1993 issue of EEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. In addition, a patent for the spherical antenna is being pursued. The final current activity is that of optimization techniques and they are approaching completion as well. The Tri-Reflector synthesis code (TSAP) was put into user friendly format. A user's guide (Report 93-13) was written and distributed to LaRC. Work continues on EASY7. EASY7 is a user friendly code used to create an input file to GRASP7.

Feasibility study of a synthesis procedure for array feeds to improve radiation performance of large distorted reflector antennas

There were several tangible products that resulted from the reflector antenna research program. The initial technical effort was to develop techniques to compensate for distortions over the surface of the main reflector of a large reflector antenna system. An in-depth investigation of this problem resulted in a new technique for the electronic correction of surface errors. A journal article on the findings describe the use of the iterative sampling method. Shortly after the 'Mission to Planet Earth' program started, we began investigating the use of large reflector antennas in geostationary orbit for passive earth remote sensing. A study panel was coordinated by Virginia Tech to set technical goals for the effort. These were used to guide the design of several antennas. The original interest stemmed from an industrial (Reynolds Metals) need and currently involves work with industry (Prodelin Corporation) on high technology, low cost reflectors. The intervening years (1987 - 1993) is the period of this report and Virginia Tech's reflector antenna activity then was exclusively with NASA LaRC.
