Galaxy morphologies revealed with Subaru HSC and super-resolution techniques. I. Major merger fractions of L UV ∼ 3–15 L*UV dropout galaxies at z ∼ 4–7

Abstract We perform a super-resolution analysis of the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) images to estimate the major merger fractions of z ∼ 4–7 dropout galaxies at the bright end of galaxy UV luminosity functions (LFs). Our super-resolution technique improves the spatial resolution of the ground-based HSC images, from ∼1″ to $\lesssim \!\!{0{^{\prime \prime }_{.}}1}$, which is comparable to that of the Hubble Space Telescope, allowing us to identify z ∼ 4–7 bright major mergers at a high completeness value of $\gtrsim \!\!90\%$. We apply the super-resolution technique to 6412, 16, 94, and 13 very bright dropout galaxies at z ∼ 4, 5, 6, and 7, respectively, in a UV luminosity range of LUV ∼ 3–$15\, L_{\rm UV}^*$ corresponding to −24 ≲ MUV ≲ −22. The major merger fractions are estimated to be $f_{\rm merger}\sim 10\%$–$20\%$ at z ∼ 4 and $\sim 50\%$–$70\%$ at z ∼ 5–7, which shows no fmerger difference compared to those of a control faint galaxy sample. Based on the fmerger estimates, we verify contributions of source blending effects and major mergers to the bright-end of double power-law (DPL) shape of z ∼ 4–7 galaxy UV LFs. While these two effects partly explain the DPL shape at LUV ∼ 3–$10\, L_{\rm UV}^*$, the DPL shape cannot be explained at the very bright end of $L_{\rm UV}\gtrsim 10\, L_{\rm UV}^*$, even after the AGN contribution is subtracted. The results support scenarios in which other additional mechanisms such as insignificant mass quenching and low dust obscuration contribute to the DPL shape of galaxy UV LFs.

Kaon gluon parton distribution and momentum fraction from 2+1+1 lattice QCD with high statistics

We present a high-statistics lattice-QCD determination of the kaon gluon parton distribution function and gluon momentum fraction. We use clover valence fermion action to take 1,296,640 kaon-correlator measurements on a highly improved staggered quark ensemble with 𝑎 ≈ 0.12 fm and 310-MeV pion mass generated by the MILC Collaboration. A detailed investigation into the impact of gauge-link smearing on the gluonic matrix elements indicates that five steps of hypercubic smearing offer an effective balance between signal quality and preservation of long-distance physics. We report a nonperturbatively renormalized kaon gluon momentum fraction of Math output error at 𝜇 = 2 GeV in the Math output error scheme. Using reduced pseudo-Ioffe-time-distribution matrix elements and pseudo-parton-distribution-function (PDF) matching, we extract the kaon gluon PDF and compare with the prediction from the Dyson-Schwinger equation and with the pion PDF obtained from the same ensemble.

Missing baryons recovered: A measurement of the gas fraction in galaxies and groups with the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect and CMB lensing

We present new constraints on the halo masses and matter density profiles of DESI galaxy groups by cross-correlating samples of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) and bright galaxy survey (BGS) galaxies with the publicly available CMB lensing convergence map from ACT DR6. This provides an independent, lensing-based calibration of halo masses, complementary to methods relying on clustering or dynamics. We derive constraints on the mean halo mass for three DESI-selected samples, finding log⁡(𝑀 halo /(𝑀 ⊙ /ℎ)) ≈ 13.18, 13.03 and 13.02 for the main LRG, extended LRG, and BGS samples, respectively. Using a halo model approach, we also compare the projected galaxy-matter density profiles with previously reported gas profiles inferred from measurements of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (kSZ) effect. This work addresses one of the key uncertainties in interpreting kSZ signals—the unknown host halo mass distribution—by providing an independent and consistent mass calibration. The agreement between the gas and total mass profiles at large aperture suggests that sufficiently far from the group center (2–3 virial radii), we recover all the baryons, offering a resolution to the missing baryon problem. We further study the cumulative gas fractions for all galaxies as well as for the most massive galaxy groups in the sample [log⁡(𝑀 halo /(𝑀 ⊙ /ℎ)) ≈ 13.5], finding values that are physically sensible and in agreement with previous findings using kSZ and x-ray data: compared to the TNG300 simulation, the observed gas fractions are systematically lower at fixed radius by ≳ 4⁢𝜎, providing compelling, independent evidence for stronger baryonic feedback in the real Universe. These findings highlight the power of combining CMB lensing with galaxy surveys to probe the interplay between baryons and dark matter in group-sized halos.

Measurement of the ratio of the $𝐵^+_𝑐 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜏^+⁢𝜈_𝜏$ and $𝐵^+_𝑐 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜇^+⁢𝜈_𝜇$ branching fractions using three-prong 𝜏 lepton decays

The ratio between the $𝐵^+_𝑐 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜏^+⁢𝜈_𝜏$ and $𝐵^+_𝑐 → 𝐽/𝜓⁢𝜇^+⁢𝜈_𝜇$ branching fractions is measured using a data sample of proton-proton collisions collected by CMS at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in the years 2016–2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The 𝐽/𝜓 meson is identified through its 𝐽/𝜓 → 𝜇 + ⁢𝜇 − decay and the tau lepton is reconstructed in the hadronic three-prong final state. The measured ratio of branching fractions in this tau decay mode, ℛ had 𝐽/𝜓 = $1.0⁢4^{+0.50}_{−0.44}$, is combined with the previous analysis based on the 𝜏 + $→ 𝜇^+⁢𝜈_𝜇\bar{𝜈}_𝜏$ leptonic decay channel, leading to ℛ 𝐽/𝜓 = 0.49 ± 0.26. As this result is consistent with the standard model prediction of 0.258 ± 0.004, no evidence of lepton flavor universality violation is found.

Theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect in Weyl semimetals

Here, we develop a hydrodynamic field theory of the three-dimensional fractional quantum Hall effect, which was recently proposed to exist in magnetic Weyl semimetals, when the Weyl nodes are gapped by strong repulsive interactions. This theory takes the form of a BF theory, which contains both one-form and two-form gauge fields, coupling to quasiparticle and loop excitations, respectively. It may be regarded as a generalization of the Chern-Simons theory of two-dimensional fractional quantum Hall liquids to three dimensions.

Thermoelectric response and entropy of fractional quantum Hall systems

In this work, we study the thermoelectric transport properties of fractional quantum Hall systems based on an exact diagonalization calculation. Based on the relation between the thermoelectric response and thermal entropy, we demonstrate that thermoelectric Hall conductivity $α_{xy}$ has power-law scaling $α_{xy} ∝ T^η$ for gapless composite Fermi-liquid states at filling numbers $\textit{ν}$ = 1/2 and 1/4 at low temperatures ($\textit{T}$), with an exponent η ~ 0.5 distinctly different from Fermi liquids. The power-law scaling remains unchanged for different forms of interaction including Coulomb and short-range ones, demonstrating the robustness of non-Fermi-liquid behavior of these interacting systems at low $\textit{T}$. In contrast, for the 1/3 fractional quantum Hall state, $α_xy$ vanishes at low $\textit{T}$ with an activation gap associated with neutral collective modes rather than charged quasiparticles. Our results establish another manifestation of the non-Fermi-liquid nature of quantum Hall fluids at a finite temperature.

Disorder broadening of even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states in the presence of a short-range alloy potential

We study energy gaps of the $\textit{ν}$ = 7/2 and $\textit{ν}$ = 5/2 fractional quantum Hall states in a series of two-dimensional electron gases containing alloy disorder. In this work we found that gaps at these two filling factors have the same suppression rate with alloy disorder. The dimensionless intrinsic gaps in our alloy samples obtained from the model proposed by Morf and d'Ambrumenil are consistent with numerical results, but are larger than those obtained from experiments on pristine samples published in the literature. The disorder broadening parameter has large uncertainties. However, a modified analysis relying on shared intrinsic gaps yields consistent results for both the $\textit{ν}$ = 5/2 and 7/2 fractional quantum Hall states and establishes a linear relationship between the disorder broadening parameter and alloy concentration. Furthermore, we find that we can separate contributions to the disorder broadening of the long-range and short-range scattering.

Electronic spectra with paramagnon fractionalization in the single-band Hubbard model

We examine spectral properties of a recently proposed theory of the intermediate temperature pseudogap metal phase of the cuprates. We show that this theory can be obtained from the familiar paramagnon theory of nearly antiferromagnetic metals by fractionalizing the paramagnon into two “hidden” layers of S = 1 / 2 spins. The first hidden layer of spins hybridizes with the electrons as in a Kondo lattice heavy Fermi liquid, whereas the second hidden layer of spins forms a spin liquid with fractionalized spinon excitations. Here, we compute the imaginary part of the electronic self-energy induced by the spinon excitations.

Measurements of the branching fractions B ( B ¯ 0 → D * + π - ) and B ( B ¯ 0 → D * + K - ) and tests of QCD factorization

Using (771.6 ± 10.6) × 10 6 $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs recorded by the Belle experiment at the KEKB e + e - collider, we report the branching fractions $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ 0 → D* + π - ) = (2.62 ± 0.02 ± 0.09 X 10 -3 and $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ 0 → D* + K - ) = (2.22 ± 0.06 ± 0.08) × 10 -4 ; the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. A measurement of the ratio of these branching fractions is also presented, R K/π = $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ → D* + K - )/ $\mathscr{B}$($\overline{B}$ → D* + π - ) = (8.41 ± 0.24 ± 0.13) × 10 -2 , where systematic uncertainties due to the D* + meson reconstruction cancel out. Furthermore, we report a new QCD factorization test based on the measured ratios for $\overline{B}$ → D* + h - and $\overline{B}$ → D* + ℓ - $v$ decays at squared momentum transfer values equivalent to the mass of the h = π or K hadron. The parameters |a 1 (h)| are measured to be |a 1 (π)| = 0.884 ± 0.004 ± 0.003 ± 0.016 and |a 1 (K)| = 0.913 ± 0.019 ± 0.008 ± 0.013, where the last uncertainties account for all external inputs. These values are approximately 15% lower than those expected from theoretical predictions. Subsequently, flavor SU(3) symmetry is tested by measuring the ratios for pions and kaons, |a 1 (K)| 2 /|a 1 (π) 2 | = 1.066 ± 0.042 ± 0.018 ± 0.023, as well as for different particle species. The ratio is consistent with unity and therefore no evidence for SU(3) symmetry breaking effects is found at the 5% precision level.

Revisiting GeV-scale annihilating dark matter with the AMS-02 positron fraction

Antimatter cosmic-rays are used to probe new phenomena in physics, including dark matter annihilation. Here, we use the cosmic-ray positron fraction spectrum by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, to search for such an annihilation signal in the Galaxy. We focus on dark matter with mass between 5 and 120 GeV, producing high-energy electrons and positrons. In these cosmic-ray energies the interplay of multiple astrophysical sources and phenomena, makes this search highly sensitive to the underlying astrophysical background assumptions. We use a vast public library of astrophysical models for the cosmic-ray positron fraction background, to derive robust upper limits on the dark matter's annihilation cross section for a number of annihilation channels. This library accounts for different types of cosmic-ray sources and uncertainties on their distribution in space and time. Also, it accounts for uncertainties on those sources' output, their injected into the interstellar medium cosmic-ray spectra and for uncertainties on cosmic-ray propagation. For any given dark matter particle mass and annihilation channel, upper limits on the annihilation cross section are given by bands that stretch a full order of magnitude in its value. Our work provides weaker limits compared to earlier results, that are however robust to all the relevant astrophysical uncertainties. Between 5 and 15 GeV, we find indications for a possible excess flux of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons. That excess is found for most, but not all of our astrophysical background parameter space, and its significance can vary appreciably. Further scrutiny is necessary to improve the understanding of these lower energy cosmic rays. Finally, we note that even if an excess signal is found in these energies, the current background uncertainties do not allow us to accurately deduce its underlying particle properties.

Search for charmed baryons in the Λ c + η system and measurement of the branching fractions of Λ c ( 2880 ) + and Λ c ( 2940 ) + decaying to Λ c + η and p D 0 relative to Σ c ( 2455 ) π
