Dataset for: Price Controls for Scarcity Events in Real-Time and Transactive Energy Systems

Real time pricing (RTP) is often promoted as a mechanism to improve the economic efficiency of the electricity system. However, many regulators have been hesitant to adopt RTP due to concerns about exposing customers to extreme price swings. To balance these concerns, this paper proposes a methodology for establishing price controls, based on the supply of demand-side flexibility in the system. As an illustrative example, we measure price responsiveness using an agent-based simulation model that is representative of the ERCOT market. The model is composed of a distribution feeder that has 250 customers with active agents controlling their HVAC systems in response to the historical ERCOT RTP with an artificially added high-price event. These agents are subjected to increasing electricity prices during the event, which we then use to create a supply curve for demand-side resources in our modeled scarcity event. We set potential price caps at points on the supply curve where customers’ have exhausted their flexible capacity. Using historical prices, we examine the systemic costs of these price caps, and present regulatory options for recouping them. Utilities and regulators interested in limiting consumer risk from dynamic pricing can utilize these methods to develop rate structures and encourage conservation. 2020 International Conference on Smart Grids and Energy Systems (SGES)

This paper is concerned about phasor-based linear state estimation of three-phase power grids which contain non transposed lines and unsymmetrical branches. It builds upon our previous work where the linear measurement equations were decoupled into three independent sets via the symmetrical component transformation. Such a transformation may however not fully decouple the measurement equations if there are nontransposed transmission lines and unsymmetrical branches in the system. This paper addresses this limitation by deriving additive terms that compensate for the remaining coupling between sequence measurements after the application of the conventional transformation. It will be shown that general unbalanced threephase power grids can still be transformed into three decoupled subsystems and their state estimation solution can be obtained in parallel by the proposed approach.

Hybrid Energy Systems: Opportunities for Coordinated Research

This chapter presents a baseline assessment of DOE’s current portfolio related to hybrid systems that produce electricity as their only output (Track 1), within the context of the key challenges facing these systems. Of particular importance is that this chapter is focused on understanding what makes a hybrid different from two standalone technologies, both in terms of the research being performed and the challenges that ongoing and planned research will seek to overcome. The purpose of summarizing and describing current research areas is to identify opportunities DOE could consider supporting in the near term. DOE encompasses several offices, each of which has unique objectives and is financially constrained. Additionally, the emergence of low-cost hybrid resources presents an array of new opportunities for the electricity sector, including better managing and allocating risk, improving operating performance, reducing system costs, and enhancing reliability and resilience. Realizing these opportunities will require overcoming barriers to the deployment of hybrids through targeted R&D which multiple DOE offices can invest in and benefit from.

Sustainable, Net-Zero Carbon Steelmaking Utilizing Nuclear and Renewable-based Integrated Energy Systems

Decarbonizing Steelmaking: Emissions Background Industrial processes (including power) account for 28% of global CO2 emissions dominated by steel, cement, NH3, ethylene. Steel accounts for 7% of global CO2 emissions (25% of Industrial), 2-3 Gigatonnes annually. Given long asset life and large investments in steel industry, recommend: Detailed analysis, materials R&D and pre-pilot technology integration required by 2030 to position U.S. industry for an investment decision for building first net-zero integrated steel plan Symposium site: https://www.aiche.org/cei/conferences/competitive-energy-systems/2021

Method of controlling a vehicle to adjust perception system energy usage

A method of controlling a vehicle includes determining a current operating situation of the vehicle, and identifying a subset of a plurality of sensors of the vehicle needed to provide data to enable a vehicle control function for the current operating situation of the vehicle. A remainder of the plurality of sensors is disengaged to reduce electric energy usage by the vehicle while the vehicle is operating in the current operating situation of the vehicle. A sampling rate for the selected subset of sensors may be reduced to further reduce energy usage of the vehicle. Additionally, an energy reduction processing strategy may be implemented to reduce a processor frequency or a voltage of a computing device used to provide the vehicle control function to further reduce energy usage of the vehicle.
