Fault tectonics and earthquake hazards in the Peninsular Ranges, Southern California

The author has identified the following significant results. Thin sections of rock exposed along the San Diego River linear were prepared and determined to be fault breccia. Single band and ratio images of the western Mojave Desert were prepared from the multispectral scanner digital tapes. Subtle differences in color of soil and rock are enhanced on the ratio images. Two north-northeast trending linears (Horsethief Canyon and Pine Valley Creek) and an east-west linear (Pine Creek) were concluded to have resulted from erosion along well-developed foliation in crystalline basement rocks.

Strain buildup and release, earthquake prediction and selection of VLB sites for the margins of the North Pacific

Microearthquake studies of the southern section of the San Andreas fault system were conducted in order to elucidate the role of known but little studied complications in the fault system which could affect the SAFE measurement. Data reduction from microearthquake studies in Baja California, Mexico, was completed. In addition, styles of deformation on the Alpine fault in New Zealand and on the San Andreas fault were compared. Sections of these faults with comparable physical characteristics seem to deform in a similar manner, indicating that deformation style is controlled by certain fundamental relations and will continue in the future. The geology of eastern New Guinea is also discussed. Deformation in the area is proposed to be related to collision of a series of island arcs with central New Guinea, which is part of the Australian continent. Among other unusual properties, eastern New Guinea contains the highest anomaly of the gravimetrically determined geoid based on GEM 6 and surface gravity data.

Faulting parameters derived from computer simulation of earthquakes

Seismic source parameters, average displacement, rupture length, and strain energy release are investigated by computer simulation using a coupled massive block model of the sliding along an active fault. Average displacements and energy release vary considerably with the degree of heterogeneity in the friction and elastic parameters used in the model. Strain energy release is determined primarily by the product of dynamic friction, rupture length, and average displacement. Interrelationships among the faulting parameters are consistent with theoretical arguments and experimental data. The variation in the frequency of occurrence of simulation events with strain energy release is different from the variation in the frequency of naturally occurring events with seismic energy.

Application of conventional and advanced techniques for the interpretation of LANDSAT 2 images for the study of linears in the Friuli earthquake area

The results obtained in the study of linears derived from the analysis of LANDSAT 2 images recorded over Friuli during 1975 are described. Particular attention is devoted to the comparison of several passes in different bands, scales and photographic supports. Moreover reference is made to aerial photographic interpretation in selected sites and to the information obtained by laser techniques.

Application of space technology to crustal dynamics and earthquake research

In cooperation with other Federal government agencies, and the governments of other countries, NASA is undertaking a program of research in geodynamics. The present program activities and plans for extension of these activities in the time period 1979-1985 are described. The program includes operation of observatories for laser ranging to the Moon and to artificial satellites, and radio observatories for very long baseline microwave interferometry (VLBI). These observatories are used to measure polar motion, earth rotation, and tectonic plate movement, and serve as base stations for mobile facilities. The mobile laser ranging and VLBI facilities are used to measure crustal deformation in tectonically active areas.
