Viscous damping of Alfven normal modes in non-uniform plasmas

The Alfven normal mode in a nonuniform, viscous plasma is investigated. Because the ideal hydromagnetic equation is singular in a nonuniform magnetic field, viscosity is included in order to regularize the equation, analogous to the removal of the singular point by resistivity (Mok and Einaudi, 1985). The eigenvalue equation is then solved numerically for a particular magnetic configuration. The real part of the frequency of this viscous normal mode is found to be similar to the one in the resistive case, while the damping is shown to be comparable, and sometimes to exceed, the resistive effect under certain conditions in which the Lundquist number is sufficiently large. The damping rate is evaluated for various plasma conditions corresponding to different parts of the solar atmosphere. The effects of viscosity are found to dominate resistivity in the quiet sun corona and solar wind.

Perturbation analysis of internal balancing for lightly damped mechanical systems with gyroscopic and circulatory forces

Approximate expressions are developed for internally balanced singular values corresponding to the modes of mechanical systems with gyroscopic forces, light damping, and small circulatory forces. A brief overview is first given of the balanced realization model reduction method, including a discussion of recent work. The models considered are defined, and a perturbation analysis is used to show that the modal representation becomes asymptotically balanced as damping reduces to zero. The approximate balanced singular values are calculated, and a simple example of a flexible, dual-spin spacecraft is given as an illustration of the results.

An efficient frequency response solution for nonproportionally damped systems

A method is presented to accurately and economically calculate steady state frequency responses based on the analysis of large finite element models with nonproportional damping effects. The new method is a hybrid of the traditional nonproportional and proportional damping solution methods. It captures the advantages of each computational approach without the burden of their respective shortcomings, as demonstrated with comparative analysis performed on a large finite element model.

Shape optimization of damping layers

Shape optimization of unconstrained and constrained damping layers is completed. The specific problem analyzed is a cantilever beam loaded at its tip by a harmonic force. Finite element modeling and mathematical programming techniques are used to obtain the solution. Performance measures are taken to be reduction of maximum diplacement and increase in fatigue lifetime. Results include the improvement, over the uniform treatment case, of these measures when the profile of the damping layer is optimized.

DAISY-DAMP: A distributed AI system for the dynamic allocation and management of power

One of the critical parameters that must be addressed when designing a loosely coupled Distributed AI SYstem (DAISY) has to do with the degree to which authority is centralized or decentralized. The decision to implement the Dynamic Allocation and Management of Power (DAMP) system as a network of cooperating agents mandated this study. The DAISY-DAMP problem is described; the component agents of the system are characterized; and the communication protocols system elucidated. The motivations and advantages in designing the system with authority decentralized is discussed. Progress in the area of Speech Act theory is proposed as playing a role in constructing decentralized systems.

Prediction and experimental observation of damage dependent damping in laminated composite beams

The equations of motion are developed for laminated composite beams with load-induced matrix cracking. The damage is accounted for by utilizing internal state variables. The net result of these variables on the field equations is the introduction of both enhanced damping, and degraded stiffness. Both quantities are history dependent and spatially variable, thus resulting in nonlinear equations of motion. It is explained briefly how these equations may be quasi-linearized for laminated polymeric composites under certain types of structural loading. The coupled heat conduction equation is developed, and it is shown that an enhanced Zener damping effect is produced by the introduction of microstructural damage. The resulting equations are utilized to demonstrate how damage dependent material properties may be obtained from dynamic experiments. Finaly, experimental results are compared to model predictions for several composite layups.

Effect of natural damping on the dynamics and control of a class of optimally designed structures

In this study the vibration control of large space structures with structural damping is investigated. Emphasis is made on the control of both a class of optimally designed (stepped) structures and also the corresponding uniform structures using a cantilever beam as an example. The open loop and closed loop dynamics are compared and the transient responses are determined to study the effect of damping on the control system design.

Some nonlinear damping models in flexible structures

A class of nonlinear damping models is introduced with application to flexible flight structures characterized by low damping. Approximate solutions of engineering interest are obtained for the model using the classical averaging technique of Krylov and Bogoliubov. The results should be considered preliminary pending further investigation.

Reducing model uncertainty effects in flexible manipulators through the addition of passive damping

An important issue in the control of practical systems is the effect of model uncertainty on closed loop performance. This is of particular concern when flexible structures are to be controlled, due to the fact that states associated with higher frequency vibration modes are truncated in order to make the control problem tractable. Digital simulations of a single-link manipulator system are employed to demonstrate that passive damping added to the flexible member reduces adverse effects associated with model uncertainty. A controller was designed based on a model including only one flexible mode. This controller was applied to larger order systems to evaluate the effects of modal truncation. Simulations using a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) design assuming full state feedback illustrate the effect of control spillover. Simulations of a system using output feedback illustrate the destabilizing effect of observation spillover. The simulations reveal that the system with passive damping is less susceptible to these effects than the untreated case.

A model for predicting damage dependent damping in laminated composites

A constitutive model has been developed for predicting the dynamic properties of composite beams which accounts for the influence of microstructural damage. The model assumes the damage state to be fixed. The model can account for both the damping increase and stiffness loss due to microstructural damage. Damage dependent material constants obtained from a baseline data set can be used to predict damping changes for several composite layups. The validity of the model has been verified by comparing the experimental results to model predictions for crossply laminates with a variety of stacking sequences.

Fore-and-aft stiffness and damping characteristics of 30 x 11.5-14.5, Type VIII, bias-ply and radial-belted aircraft tires

Measurements of footprint geometrical properties and fore and aft stiffness and damping characteristics were obtained on 30 x 11.5-14.5 bias-ply and radial-belted aircraft tires. Significant differences in stiffness and damping characteristics were found between the two design types. The results show that footprint aspect ratio effects may interfere with the improved hydroplaning potential associated with the radial-belted tire operating at higher inflation pressures.

Spatial versus time hysteresis in damping mechanisms

A description is given of continuing investigations on the task of estimating internal damping mechanisms in flexible structures. Specifically, two models for internal damping in Euler-Bernoulli beams are considered: spatial hysteresis and time hysteresis. A theoretically sound computational algorithm for estimation is described, and experimental results are discussed. It is concluded that both models perform well in the sense that they accurately predict response for the experiments conducted.

The influence of nonlinear damping on the random response of panels by time domain simulation

The effects of nonlinear damping on the large-deflection response of symmetrically laminated composite panels is studied by time-domain simulation in an attempt to quantify experimentally observed phenomena. A single-mode deflection approach is used in the equations of motion and in the linear and nonlinear damping models. The probability, peak-probability, and spectral-density data are compiled for both strains and deflection. The rms responses as a function of input excitation level are also obtained and compared to linear, equivalent-linearization, and Fokker-Planck equation solutions.

Component mode synthesis for model order reduction of nonclassically damped systems

Based on a component mode synthesis approach, a model-order-reduction method for linear structures with arbitrary linear damping has been developed. Projection matrices are introduced to make the method applicable to systems having rigid-body freedom. To test the method, eigenvalues of a reduced-order model of a free-free beam with nonproportional damping were compared to exact eigenvalues and to eigenvalues obtained using two other model-reduction strategies. The present model-reduction strategy proved to be decidedly superior.

Sensitivity of actively damped structures to imperfections and modeling errors

The sensitivity of actively damped response of structures with respect to errors in the structural modeling is studied. Two ways of representing errors are considered. The first approach assumes errors in the form of spatial variations (or imperfections) in the assumed mass and stiffness properties of the structures. The second approach assumes errors due to such factors as unknown joint stiffnesses, discretization errors, and nonlinearities. These errors are represented here as discrepancies between experimental and analytical mode shapes and frequencies. The actively damped system considered here is a direct-rate feedback regulator based on a number of colocated velocity sensors and force actuators. The response of the controlled structure is characterized by the eigenvalues of the closed-loop system. The effects of the modeling errors are thus presented as the sensitivity of the eigenvalues of the closed-loop system. Results are presented for two examples: (1) a three-span simply supported beam controlled by three sensors and actuators, and (2) a laboratory structure consisting of a cruciform beam supported by cables.

Nonobstructive Damping For Parts Vibrating In Flows

Vibration-prone parts in fast-flowing liquids or gases damped by simple provision: drill or cast small holes in them and fill holes with particles. Particles absorb vibration energy without obstructing flow. Damping holes add little to cost of manufacturing parts. Reduces masses of parts because masses of inserted particles less than materials removed to make holes.
