A de novo sacrificial-MOF strategy to construct enhanced-flux nanofiltration membranes for efficient dye removal

Nanofiltration membanes play a critical role in alleviating global water scarcity, affecting more than 4 billion people. Here, a new metal organic framework (MOF) sacrificicial strategy is designed to synthesize flux-enhancing nanofiltration membrane for efficient dye removal. With the aid of polyphenol chemistry, ZIF-67 MOF was first coated onto a porous support and in situ transformed into a selective layer by virtue of pyrrole polymerization. Trigerred by ammonium persulfate, polypyrrole selective layer functioalized nanofiltration membrane was fabricated when accompanying pore regulation by MOF self-sacrifice. The membrane demonstrated a flux enhancement of 745% than pristine polypyrrole (PPy) one with maintained rejection. Furthermore, the synergistic interactions among polypyrrole, polyphenol, and porous support endowed membrane with excellent stability during long term test. The designed MOF sacrificed route may open a new avenue for fabricating advanced energetic-efficient membranes with the reconstructed architecture towards diverse separation applications.

Discovery of spontaneous de-interpenetration through charged point-point repulsions

Entanglement is an energetically favorable occurrence, pervasive in both nature and synthetic systems, where networks prefer to entwine with one another rather than remain open and accessible. As a result of entanglement, valuable internal pore space, useful for applications such as catalysis, storage, and sensing, is lost. Here, we detail our discovery of a phenomenon termed “charged point-point repulsion,” which energetically favors dis-entanglement, transforming a densely packed uranium-based framework with 14.2 and 19.8 Å pores into an open material with 40.7 Å pores and record-high void fraction and pore volume. We anticipate that the phenomenon described in this work could be widely generalized for the direct and systematic production of non-entangled structures with an abundance of valuable pore space and far-reaching practical importance. More fundamentally, this study compels a re-evaluation of the thermodynamics of porosity.

Demand reduction and energy saving potential of thermal energy storage integrated heat pumps [Réduction de la demande et potentiel d'économie d'énergie des pompes à chaleur avec stockage d'énergie thermique intégré]

A heat pump (HP) moves heat from a low-temperature source to a high-temperature sink with an input of energy. Often, one temperature body fluctuates with time (e.g., diurnal ambient temperature), causing the HP efficiency to vary. Integrating thermal energy storage (TES) into a HP system adds a third temperature body, enabling the HP to be advantageously coupled to any two: the application, the ambient, or the TES at strategic times. Although TES integration with HPs is an important emerging technology to lower energy consumption and decrease energy demand during critical times, the favorable circumstances for TES integration are poorly understood. Here, this paper establishes the energy reduction and demand reduction potential of TES-integrated HPs with both analytical and numerical HP models. All possible temperature arrangements are considered for HP-TES systems with two fixed temperature bodies (application and TES) and one variable temperature (ambient). Results show that overall energy savings are most attainable when the TES temperature is near the application temperature, whereas a large temperature difference between the TES and the application leads to the most peak demand reduction. The potential for overall energy savings increases as the magnitude of ambient temperature fluctuations increases.

Prospective Phase 2 Study of Radiation Therapy Dose and Volume De-escalation for Elective Neck Treatment of Oropharyngeal and Laryngeal Cancer

The required elective nodal dose and volumes for head and neck intensity modulated radiation therapy have largely been extrapolated from conventional radiation therapy fields. In this prospective, dual-center, phase 2 study, we investigated the efficacy and tolerability of reduced elective nodal volume and dose in oropharyngeal and laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

De-risking fault leakage risk and containment integrity for subsurface storage applications

The subsurface is pivotal in the energy transition, for the sequestration of CO 2 and energy storage. It is crucial to understand to what extent geological faults may form leakage pathways that threaten the containment integrity of these projects. Fault flow behavior has been studied in the context of hydrocarbon development, supported by observations from wells drilled through faults, but such observations are rare in geoenergy projects. Focusing on mechanical behavior as early indicator of potential leakage risks, a probabilistic Coulomb Failure Stress workflow is developed and demonstrated using data from the Decatur CO 2 sequestration project to rank faults based on their containment risk. The analysis emphasizes the importance of fault throw relative to reservoir thickness and pore pressure change in assessing reactivation risks. Integrating this mechanical assessment with geological and dynamic fault analyses contributes to derisking fault containment for geoenergy applications, providing valuable insights for the successful development of subsurface storage projects.
