PhaseGAN: a deep-learning phase-retrieval approach for unpaired datasets

Phase retrieval approaches based on deep learning (DL) provide a framework to obtain phase information from an intensity hologram or diffraction pattern in a robust manner and in real-time. However, current DL architectures applied to the phase problem rely on i) paired datasets, i. e., they arc only applicable when a satisfactory solution of the phase problem has been found, and ii) the fact that most of them ignore the physics of the imaging process. Here, we present PhaseGAN, a new DL approach based on Generative Adversarial Networks, which allows the use of unpaired datasets and includes the physics of image formation. The performance of our approach is enhanced by including the image formation physics and a novel Fourier loss function, providing phase reconstructions when conventional phase retrieval algorithms fail, such as ultra-fast experiments. Thus, PhaseGAN offers the opportunity to address the phase problem in real-time when no phase reconstructions but good simulations or data from other experiments are available.

FleetREDI Insight: Intrastate Coach Bus Dataset

Capturing real-world data is critical to improving efficiency and supporting technology advancements in commercial vehicles. FleetREDI’s insights provide detailed duty cycle information and highlight unique aspects of the given dataset. Each insight delivers a quick look at the collected data by summarizing the operation and identifying key findings of the initial analysis. This FleetREDI insight explores coach buses operating in Colorado. Coach buses are a primary mover for intrastate transit and are primarily used for longer trips with more comfortable seats and a restroom. All Aboard America! Holdings Inc. offers various fixed-service and charter routes across Colorado on its Bustang fleet out of its depot in Golden, Colorado. NLR installed logging devices and collected operational data on nine 40-foot Bustang motorcoaches operating on fixed routes from May through August 2022. Using NLR’s FleetREDI data platform, this dataset provides a summary of daily operation to help understand duty cycle characteristics. This includes daily distance, fuel use, and estimated engine-produced energy consumption for nine motorcoaches that operated more than 33,000 miles. These vehicles primarily operated on Interstate 25 and Interstate 70. ![FleetREDI interstate bus](FleetREDI-interstate-bus.jpg)

Flux Seasonality Metrics Database: A companion dataset for FLUXNET annual product

This dataset include standardized phenological transition dates, and derived season lengths of active, dormant and transition seasons of ecosystem carbon and energy fluxes, as reported in FLUXNET. Such metrics are unique in that they characterize the seasonal dynamics of these fluxes in their own terms rather than in reference to traditional phenology indicators that mostly relate to vegetation structural characteristics. The Flux Seasonality Metrics Database (FSMD) generated 17 standardized seasonality metrics for 4 different fluxes including gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (RE), latent heat (LE) and sensible heat (H) reported in FLUXNET2015 Dataset for about 200 sites and 1500 site-years of data globally. Each metric is reported as an estimate and a confidence interval, which is a function of data coverage and flux variability. We anticipate that the FSMD will facilitate new model validation exercises, and stimulate new research in global change and Earth science disciplines where land-atmosphere exchange dynamics play a central role.

Aerobic respiration controls on shale weathering, Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, 2023: Dataset

This data package was generated in order to support the development of a deep-time weathering model and to assess the coupling between shale weathering and aerobic respiration in the paper “Aerobic respiration controls on shale weathering” by Stolze et al., Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (2023). The package contains two csv files providing the average CO2(g) concentration profiles [ppm] and mineral concentration profiles [wt%], respectively. The CO2(g) concentration profiles were measured in the vicinity of the monitoring well PLM2 between January 2018 and April 2019. The gas samples were collected in the unsaturated zone to a depth of 1.52 m. The mineral concentration profiles were determined by X-Ray diffraction (XRD). The XRD measurements were performed on sub-core samples collected in the monitoring well PLM3 down to a depth of 7.01 m. The dataset additionally includes a file-level metadata (flmd.csv) file that lists each file contained in the dataset with associated metadata; and a data dictionary (dd.csv) file that contains column/row headers used throughout the files along with a definition, units, and data type.Update on 2024-05-28: Revised versions of the CSV data files (CO2_data_GCA_Stolze_et_al_2023.csv and XRD_data_GCA_Stolze_et_al_2023.csv) were made to apply ESS-DIVE's CSV reporting format guidelines. Updated versions of the File Level Metadata (v2_20240528_flmd.csv) and Data Dictionary (v2_20240528_dd.csv) files were updated to reflect the changes made to the CSV files.

Dataset for scientific paper "Simulated plant‑mediated oxygen input has strong impacts on fine‑scale porewater biogeochemistry and weak impacts on integrated methane fluxes in coastal wetlands", a modeling study based on field observation at the tidal salt marshes of the Parker River Estuary, Massachusetts, United States

This dataset is the raw and processed data for the paper "Simulated plant ‑ mediated oxygen input has strong impacts on fine ‑ scale porewater biogeochemistry and weak impacts on integrated methane fluxes in coastal wetlands". This study investigated how plant-mediated oxygen input affects subsurface biogeochemical reactions of organic carbon degradation and the resulting methane emissions of coastal wetlands by model simulation. We used the subsurface geochemical simulator PFLOTRAN for the modeling, which produced the simulated changes in porewater chemical substances and methane emissions over 10 days under different scenarios of plant-mediated oxygen input.Specifically, this dataset contains: 1) the input files for PFLOTRAN of all simulation runs conducted in this study. Those files are with an extension of ".in", containing information of the biogeochemical reaction network (stoichiometry, reaction rate, Monod constants, etc), fluid flow rate and oxygen concentration in the fluid which together simulated the plant-mediated oxygen input, the configuration of artificial reactions that simulated the methane fluxes, etc. The PFLOTRAN input files are text files, which can be opened by NotePad, but running these input files will require proper installation of PFLOTRAN (instruction: https://documentation.pflotran.org/user_guide/how_to/installation/installation.html). 2) the raw and processed model output from PFLOTRAN of all simulation runs, and 3) the python scripts used to process the raw model output, including random allocation of root cells, converting raw data into organized formats, calculating the methane fluxes based on the model output, data visualization, etc. The raw and processed model output from PFLOTRAN are in .spydata format, which can be viewed with Python. and 3) the python scripts for data processing and analysis are programming scripts, which can be opened with Python. This modeling work, in particular the model parameterization of root density and initial conditions of porewater concentrations of biogeochemical substances, was based on field measurements at the salt marsh of the Upper Parker River Estuary, Massachusetts, United States.

deeplenstronomy: A dataset simulation package for strong gravitational lensing

Automated searches for strong gravitational lensing in optical imaging survey datasets often employ machine learning and deep learning approaches. These techniques require more example systems to train the algorithms than have presently been discovered, which creates a need for simulated images as training dataset supplements. This work introduces and summarizes deeplenstronomy, an open-source Python package that enables efficient, large-scale, and reproducible simulation of images of astronomical systems. A full suite of unit tests, documentation, and example notebooks are available at https://deepskies.github.io/deeplenstronomy/ .

Uncertainties associated with GAN-generated datasets in high energy physics

Recently, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) trained on samples of traditionally simulated collider events have been proposed as a way of generating larger simulated datasets at a reduced computational cost. In this paper we point out that data generated by a GAN cannot statistically be better than the data it was trained on, and critically examine the applicability of GANs in various situations, including a) for replacing the entire Monte Carlo pipeline or parts of it, and b) to produce datasets for usage in highly sensitive analyses or sub-optimal ones. We present our arguments using information theoretic demonstrations, a toy example, as well as in the form of a formal statement, and identify some potential valid uses of GANs in collider simulations.

Market Assessment for Hydropower Turbine Design Tools Using Integrated Datasets of Dams, Turbines, Owners, and Fish

A Department of Energy funded project titled Biologically Based Design and Evaluation of Hydropower Turbines (BioDE) has developed modeling tools and data that are intended to inform the design and installation of more environmentally friendly hydropower turbines. A market assessment was conducted to identify prospective users of these products within the hydropower industry and regulatory community. The market assessment included the development of a dataset of hydropower turbines and their defining characteristics (both physical and biological) for the purpose of refining program outreach and marketing of BioDE tools and data. A specific objective of the analysis was to identify hydropower owners and operators whose turbines were likely candidates for refurbishing or replacement because of senescence or re-licensing. This report describes a dataset that combines turbine properties, licensing status, fish resources, and ownership information on nearly 5,500 turbines at nearly 2,200 hydropower projects throughout the United States. The data analysis categorizes turbines by design type, geographic region, owner, age, license expiration, fish species presence, and regulatory authority. The ultimate result is the identification of the federal and non-federal owners with the most turbines of various types and the most turbines that have the potential to interact with fish species of concern.
