A comprehensive chemical abundance analysis of the extremely metal poor Leoncino Dwarf galaxy (AGC 198691)
ABSTRACT We re-examine the extremely metal-poor dwarf galaxy AGC 198691 using a high quality spectrum obtained by the LBT’s MODS instrument. Previous spectral observations obtained from KOSMOS on the Mayall 4-m and the Blue channel spectrograph on the MMT 6.5-m telescope did not allow for the determination of sulfur, argon, or helium abundances. We report an updated and full chemical abundance analysis for AGC 198691, including confirmation of the extremely low “direct” oxygen abundance with a value of 12 + log (O/H) = 7.06 ± 0.03. AGC 198691’s low metallicity potentially makes it a high value target for helping determine the primordial helium abundance (Yp). Though complicated by a Na i night sky line partially overlaying the He i λ5876 emission line, the LBT/MODS spectrum proved adequate for determining AGC 198691’s helium abundance. We employ the recently expanded and improved model of Aver et al., incorporating higher Balmer and Paschen lines, augmented by the observation of the infrared helium emission line He i λ10830 obtained by Hsyu et al. Applying our full model produced a reliable helium abundance determination, consistent with the expectation for its metallicity. Although this is the lowest metallicity object with a detailed helium abundance, unfortunately, due to its faintness [EW(Hβ) < 100 Å] and the compromised He i λ5876, the resultant uncertainty on the helium abundance is too large to allow a significant improvement on the measurement of Yp.
metagRoot: a comprehensive database of protein families associated with plant root microbiomes
The plant root microbiome is vital in plant health, nutrient uptake, and environmental resilience. To explore and harness this diversity, we present metagRoot, a specialized and enriched database focused on the protein families of the plant root microbiome. MetagRoot integrates metagenomic, metatranscriptomic, and reference genome-derived protein data to characterize 71 091 enriched protein families, each containing at least 100 sequences. These families are annotated with multiple sequence alignments, CRISPR elements, hidden Markov models, taxonomic and functional classifications, ecosystem and geolocation metadata, and predicted 3D structures using AlphaFold2. MetagRoot is a powerful tool for decoding the molecular landscape of root-associated microbial communities and advancing microbiome-informed agricultural practices by enriching protein family information with ecological and structural context. The database is available at https://pavlopoulos-lab.org/metagroot/ or https://www.metagroot.org.
A comprehensive framework to assess elemental mercury in the Department of Energy: A descriptive analysis
Objective: This study investigated the relationship between personal breathing zone air samples and associated biological monitoring urine samples collected in the U.S. Department of Energy Operations. Methods: We performed standard descriptive analyses of the air sample and BEI monitoring data. We also provide a list of direct-reading instruments used in mercury field assessments. Results: A total of 2,330 air samples and 265 BEI data were analyzed. These data were grouped into 16 job titles, excluding categories with fewer than 10 samples, which resulted in 11 job titles. Conclusions: We conclude that industrial hygiene airborne sample data alone may not provide a complete assessment in exposure determination. We suggested the necessity of incorporating biological monitoring to determine the exposure.
A comprehensive framework to assess elemental mercury in the Department of Energy: A time series analysis
Objective: This study investigated whether seasonal categories affect airborne mercury concentrations in the U.S. Department of Energy operations. Methods: We conducted an initial assessment of the general variability of airborne elemental mercury time-weighted average (TWA) samples. Then, we performed a two-component time series analysis to determine whether long-term, cyclical temperature change patterns affect mercury concentrations. Results: Both ARIMA time series models demonstrated stationary, non-random means (χ² = 83.8, p < 0.001) and standard deviation (χ² = 55.8, p < 0.001) of mercury concentrations. Here, our results indicate that the seasonal factors did not influence mercury concentration. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that mercury concentrations primarily emanate from operational activities, work practices, and/or transient environmental conditions rather than seasonal fluctuations.
Comprehensive analytical model of the dynamic 𝑍 pinch
In this work we present an analytical 1D axisymmetric model describing the evolution of the dynamic 𝑍 pinch. This model is capable of predicting the trajectories of the imploding sheath's magnetic piston and preceding shock front, along with the velocity, pressure, density, and magnetic field profiles, for any time-dependent current, spatially varying initial density profile, and weak initial axial field. The implosion is divided into stages, with each stage described by a set of coupled ordinary differential equations derived from the ideal MHD equations. Comparisons with experimental data from the COBRA pulsed-power facility are quite promising and imply this model could prove useful in designing and analyzing future pulsed-power experiments.
Comprehensive model for evaluating voltage losses and performance improvements in thin-film photovoltaic devices
Progress of state-of-the-art and next-generation thin-film photovoltaic devices is often stymied by open-circuit voltage (𝑉 oc ) that is significantly lower than theoretical and practical limits. Yet, effectively diagnosing the primary sources of voltage loss remains challenging. Herein, a sequence of device-level characterization techniques and simulations are employed to identify and rank loss mechanisms. For the research-based Cd(Se,Te) device under study, most of the loss was at the front semiconductor heterointerface due to a clifflike conduction-band offset that lowered the recombination activation energy. Additional losses due to band tails were quantified by photoluminescence analysis. The latter provided the absorption coefficient and activation energy reduction associated with band tails as inputs to device models. Simulations showed that alleviating front-interface issues would improve 𝑉 oc , but it would then be limited by bulk recombination. Further improvement of the bulk would then lead to back-contact limitations. Reducing band tails is beneficial in any circumstance. In conclusion, this analysis provides guidance for reaching toward the radiative 𝑉 oc limit.

Comprehensive anisotropic linear optical properties of the Weyl semimetals TaAs and NbAs
We report that TaAs and NbAs are two of the earliest identified Weyl semimetals that possess many intriguing optical properties, such as chirality-dependent optical excitations and giant second harmonic generation (SHG). Linear and nonlinear optics have been employed as tools to probe the Weyl physics in these crystals. Here, we extend these studies to address two important aspects: determining the complete anisotropic dielectric response and exploring if and how they can reveal essential Weyl physics. We determine the complete anisotropic dielectric functions of TaAs and NbAs by combining spectroscopic ellipsometry and density functional theory (DFT). Parameterized Lorentz oscillators are reported from 1.2 - 6 eV (experiment) and 0 - 6 eV (DFT), and good agreement is shown between them. Both linear and nonlinear optical properties have been previously reported to reveal Weyl physics. We suggest that strong optical resonances from trivial bands are the likely origin of the large optical SHG previously reported at these energies. Furthermore, by comparing the contribution of a small k -space centered around the Weyl cones with the total linear dielectric function, we find that these contributions are highly anisotropic and are < 25% of the total dielectric function below 0.5 eV; abov1 eV, these contributions are negligible. Thus, the study of Weyl physics using optical techniques requires very low energies, and even there, a careful assessment is required in distinguishing the much smaller contributions of the Weyl bands from the dominant contributions of the trivial bands and Drude response to the total dielectric function.
Comprehensive simulation of heavy-ion collisions at nonzero baryon chemical potential
Here, we present results of hydrodynamic modeling of Au-Au collisions from $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7 to 200 GeV. Our simulations have three novel components. First, we use a Linear EXtrapolation of Ultratrelativistic nucleon-nucleon Scattering to nucleus-nucleus collisions (LEXUS) inspired Monte Carlo initial-state model. Second, we use a crossover equation of state at finite baryon densities without a critical point. Finally, we use departure functions derived from the quasiparticle theory of transport coefficients for hadronic matter at nonzero baryon densities.
Comprehensive study of radon progeny attachment to surfaces
Low energy, low rate experiments, such as searches for neutrinoless double β decay and dark matter, require unprecedentedly low levels of background in order to deliver their full science potential. 210 Po driven, neutron induced background, caused by nuclear (α, n) reactions on low-Z materials, direct background contributions of the 210 Po α radiation and desorption of the 210 Pb progeny 210 Bi from surfaces into the detector medium are of particular of concern. These backgrounds depend on details of the components’ exposure to radon-loaded laboratory air and, thus, their handling history. The attachment rates of airborne radon progeny to surfaces, needed for the estimation of these background rates, are poorly understood. This article reports the results of a campaign comprising of more than 1200 attachment measurements, performed for nine different materials. Correlations of the attachment with environmental parameters such as air exchange rate, electrical surface potential, temperature, atmospheric pressure, and relative humidity have been studied and found to be significant only in case of the first two. Attachment modeling, using the Jacobi model, is compared to data.

Comprehensive symmetric-hybrid ring design for a proton EDM experiment at below 10 –29 e · cm
A concise demonstrative summary of the Symmetric Hybrid ring design for the storage ring proton electric dipole moment experiment is presented. In this paper, critical issues such as lattice design, background electrical fields, geometrical phase, general relativity, spin coherence time and polarimeter systematics are presented. Overall, we find that with the currently proposed design iteration, systematic error sources are reduced by orders of magnitude and that the ring alignment requirements are within the currently available technology.

Comprehensive Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum and Flux at Daya Bay
This Letter reports the precise measurement of the reactor antineutrino spectrum and flux based on the full dataset of 4.7 ×10 6 inverse-beta-decay candidates collected at Daya Bay near detectors. Expressed in terms of the inverse-beta-decay yield per fission, the antineutrino spectra from all reactor fissile isotopes and the specific 235 U and 239 Pu isotopes are measured with 1.3%, 3%, and 8% uncertainties, respectively, near the 3 MeV spectrum peak in reconstructed energy, reaching the best precision in the world. The total antineutrino flux and isotopic 235 U and 239 Pu fluxes are precisely measured to be 5.84 ± 0.07, 6.16 ± 0.12, and 4.16 ± 0.21 in units of 10 −43 cm 2 /fission. These measurements are compared with the Huber-Mueller model, the reevaluated conversion model based on the Kurchatov Institute measurement, and the latest summation model (SM2023). Furthermore, the Daya Bay flux shows good consistency with the Kurchatov Institute and SM2023 models but disagrees with the Huber-Mueller model. The Daya Bay spectrum, however, disagrees with all model predictions.

XtalCAMP: a comprehensive program for the analysis and visualization of scanning Laue X-ray micro-/nanodiffraction data
XtalCAMP is a software package based on the MATLAB platform, which is suitable for, but not limited to, the analysis and visualization of scanning Laue X-ray micro-/nanodiffraction data. The main objective of the software is to provide complementary functionalities to the Laue indexing software packages used at several synchrotron beamlines. Here, the graphical user interfaces allow the easy analysis of characteristic microstructure features, including real-time intensity mapping for a quick examination of phase, grain and defect distribution, 2D color-coded mapping of microstructural properties from the output of other Laue indexing software, crystal orientation visualization, grain boundary characterization based on orientation/misorientation calculation, principal strain/stress analysis, and strain ellipsoid representation, as well as a series of additional toolkits. As an example, XtalCAMP is applied to the microstructural investigation of a solution-heat-treated Ni-based superalloy manufactured using a laser 3D-printing technique, and a deformed natural quartzite from Val Bregaglia in the Central Alps.
