Bit Error Rate of Coherent M-ary PSK

The bit error rate (BER) for the coherent detection of M-ary PSK signals with Gray code bit mapping is considered. A closed-form expression for the exact BER of M-ary PSK is presented. Tight upper and lower bounds on BER are also obtained for M-ary PSK with larger M.

Coherent infrared lidar mission and technology needs for measurements of transport and concentration of tropospheric trace species

The science justification and the feasibility of aircraft-based CO2 Doppler lidar measurements of transport between the free troposphere and the stratosphere (or planetary boundary layer) are discussed for a wide range of seasonal and geographic conditions. Ground-based coherent CO2 lidar aerosol scattering experiments using a stable ring resonator (about 50 mJ/pulse) CO2 laser with external injection locking are reported. Comparative studies of injection-locked CO2 laser unstable resonators and master oscillator power amplifiers are reported for future CO2 lidar missions with respect to requirements of pulse energy, duration/shape, frequency chirp, efficiency for heterodyne detection, and combined Doppler lidar and Differential Absorption Lidar missions.

A tunable coherent CO2 lidar for measurements of atmospheric aerosol backscatter and attenuation

A coherent laser radar system using a grating-tunable, injection-locked TEA-CO2 transmitter is being used to measure the altitude dependence of atmospheric aerosol backscatter and attenuation at a variety of CO2 laser wavelengths in the 9-11 micron region. Injection control of the TEA-CO2 laser allows one to obtain Single-Longitudinal-Mode (SLM) pulses which will follow the frequency of the injected radiation if the TEA laser cavity length is adjusted so that a cavity resonance is in proximity with the injected signal frequency, and if various additional conditions are satisfied. Requirements for generation of SLM pulses in this manner from a TEA CO2 laser with an unstable resonator cavity will be discussed. Procedures used for quantitative range-gated measurements of aerosol backscatter and attenuation will also be discussed.

Laboratory demonstration of image reconstruction for coherent optical system of modular imaging collectors (COSMIC)

The first physical demonstration of the principle of image reconstruction using a set of images from a diffraction-blurred elongated aperture is reported. This is an optical validation of previous theoretical and numerical simulations of the COSMIC telescope array (coherent optical system of modular imaging collectors). The present experiment utilizes 17 diffraction blurred exposures of a laboratory light source, as imaged by a lens covered by a narrow-slit aperture; the aperture is rotated 10 degrees between each exposure. The images are recorded in digitized form by a CCD camera, Fourier transformed, numerically filtered, and added; the sum is then filtered and inverse Fourier transformed to form the final image. The image reconstruction process is found to be stable with respect to uncertainties in values of all physical parameters such as effective wavelength, rotation angle, pointing jitter, and aperture shape. Future experiments will explore the effects of low counting rates, autoguiding on the image, various aperture configurations, and separated optics.

Observations of solar-flare ionization in the mesosphere using coherent-scatter radar

Observations of solar-flare ionization in the mesosphere can be made using coherent-scatter radar systems. The scattered power profiles they measure in the 60-90 km altitude region is a function of the ion concentration gradient and the intensity of turbulent mixing at each altitude. By comparing the power profiles before, during and after a solar flare, it is possible to estimate the ion production rate during the flare as a function of altitude and time. This analysis is used to compare the ion production rates with generally accepted ion-chemical models. Comparisons are made with ion production rates estimated from the solar X-ray flux for the same flare made by geostationary satellites.

Fast turbulent correlations from phase coherence velocimetry

Flows with coherent structures allow see-free measurements of local velocity and velocity fluctuations. Continuous turbulent velocity histories in ionizing shock waves are obtained at a 10-MHz sampling rate. From this, correlation profiles and frequency spectra are determined which reveal the presence of prominent high-frequency components.

Contributions to the understanding of large-scale coherent structures in developing free turbulent shear flows

Advances in the mechanics of boundary layer flow are reported. The physical problems of large scale coherent structures in real, developing free turbulent shear flows, from the nonlinear aspects of hydrodynamic stability are addressed. The presence of fine grained turbulence in the problem, and its absence, lacks a small parameter. The problem is presented on the basis of conservation principles, which are the dynamics of the problem directed towards extracting the most physical information, however, it is emphasized that it must also involve approximations.

Ground-based measurements of atmospheric backscatter and absorption using coherent CO2 lidar

In the present derivation of vertical profiles of atmospheric absorption and backscatter coefficients from coherent pulsed Doppler lidar by means of a slant path method, a strong seasonal variation of absorption and backscatter is evident throughout the lower troposphere. Measurements beyond the lower troposphere are hampered by modest pulse energy and lidar beam absorption, although small backscatter values are occasionally observed at midtropospheric levels during the winter months, when absorption is minimal. While a monomodal lognormal backscatter distribution is found within the lower boundary layer, evidence of a bimodal lognormal distribution is found at higher levels.

Coherent large-scale structures in high Reynolds number supersonic jet of Mach number 1.4

Large-scale coherent structures are found to exist in fully expanded shock free supersonic jets with Reynolds number 1.6 million and Mach number 1.4. The jet was excited by a weak upstream tone to extract the large-scale structures from the random turbulence. The most preferential excitation Strouhal number is found to be in the vicinity of 0.4, and the dependence of the large-scale structure phase velocity on the excitation Strouhal number shows a similar trend to that found for subsonic acoustically excited jets.

Coherent structures in a turbulent boundary layer. I - Generation of 'artificial' bursts

In an effort to better understand the physics and structure of coherent events in a turbulent boundary layer, an attempt is made to produce 'artificial' bursts. These are generated in a turbulent boundary layer developed on a flat plate towed in an 18 m water channel and thus with negligible freestream turbulence. The burstlike events are produced by either withdrawing near-wall fluid from two minute holes separated in the spanwise direction or by pitching a miniature delta wing that is flush-mounted to the wall. Either of these two actions generates a hairpinlike vortex and low-speed streak that resemble naturally occurring structures. The resulting sequence of events that occur at a given location can be uniquely controlled, thus allowing detailed examination via phase-locked measurements and flow visualization. In this paper, the proof of concept of artificial burst generation is established by comparing the artificial events with natural, random bursts using flow visualization and hot-film signals.

Nonlinear Coherence Function for Machinery Diagnosis

Vibration spectra analyzed for signs of trouble. Nonlinear coherence function assists in analysis of vibration spectra of machinery for signs of incipient failure. Useful primarily in determining whether apparent harmonic in complicated vibration signal indicates possible defect or if due to independent vibration source or extraneous noise.

Coherent lidars based on intracavity heterodyning of echo signals

The development and technical realization of the method of laser sounding of the atmosphere based on the effects of mixing of reference and external fields of scattering inside a laser cavity are presented. An approximate theory of the method was developed on the basis of the investigations using the model of a three-mirror laser. The nonlinear effect of a wideband laser on frequency-dependent external influences of the atmosphere was investigated. The field measurements of gaseous composition of the atmosphere were performed on the basis of a given method of coherent reception using a tunable CO2 laser.

Wavelength dependence of coherent and incoherent satellite-based lidar measurements of wind velocity and aerosol backscatter

The results are presented of a capability study of Earth orbiting lidar systems, at various wavelengths from 1.06 to 10.6 microns, for the measurement of wind velocity and aerosol backscatter, and for the detection of clouds. Both coherent and incoherent lidar systems were modeled and compared for the aerosol backscatter and cloud detection applications.

An analysis at mesospheric coherent-scatter power enhancements during solar flare events

Solar flares produce increases in coherent-scatter power from the mesosphere due to the increase in free electrons produced by X-ray photoionization. Thirteen such power enhancements were observed at Urbana. When such an enhancement occurs at an altitude containing a turbulence layer with constant strength, the relative enhancement of electon density is estimated from the enhancement in power. Such estimates of enchanced electron density are compared with estimates of the X-ray photoionization at that altitude, deduced from geostationary satellite measurements. It is found that possible types ion-chemical reaction scheme may be distinguished, and the nonflare ion-pair production function may be estimated. The type of ion-chemical scheme and the nonflare ion-production function are shown to depend on the solar zenith angle.
