On massive carbide precipitation during high temperature low cycle fatigue in alloy 800H

The effect of strain rate on massive precipitation and the mechanism for the occurrence of massive precipitation of M23C6 in alloy 800H is investigated during elevated temperature low cycle fatigue testing. It was observed that large M23C6 platelets were in the vicinity of grain and incoherent twin boundaries. The strain controlled fatigue testing at higher strain rates that promoted cyclic hardening enabled massive precipitation to occur more easily.

800 C Silicon Carbide (SiC) Pressure Sensors for Engine Ground Testing

MEMS-based 4H-SiC piezoresistive pressure sensors have been demonstrated at 800 C, leading to the discovery of strain sensitivity recovery with increasing temperatures above 400 C, eventually achieving up to, or near, 100 recovery of the room temperature values at 800 C. This result will allow the insertion of highly sensitive pressure sensors closer to jet, rocket, and hypersonic engine combustion chambers to improve the quantification accuracy of combustor dynamics, performance, and increase safety margin. Also, by operating at higher temperature and locating closer to the combustion chamber, reduction of the length (weight) of pressure tubes that are currently used will be achieved. This will result in reduced costlb to access space.

Prolonged 500 C Operation of 100+ Transistor Silicon Carbide Integrated Circuits

This report describes more than 5000 hours of successful 500 C operation of semiconductor integrated circuits (ICs) with more than 100 transistors. Multiple packaged chips with two different 4H-SiC junction field effect transistor (JFET) technology demonstrator circuits have surpassed thousands of hours of oven-testing at 500 C. After 100 hours of 500 C burn-in, the circuits (except for 2 failures) exhibit less than 10 change in output characteristics for the remainder of 500C testing. We also describe the observation of important differences in IC materials durability when subjected to the first nine constituents of Venus-surface atmosphere at 9.4 MPa and 460C in comparison to what is observed for Earth-atmosphere oven testing at 500 C.

TEM Analysis of Diffusion-Bonded Silicon Carbide Ceramics Joined Using Metallic Interlayers

SiC fiber-bonded ceramics (SA-Tyrannohex: SA-THX) diffusion-bonded with TiCu metallic interlayers were investigated. Thin samples of the ceramics were prepared with a focused ion beam (FIB) and the interfacial microstructure of the prepared samples was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning TEM (STEM). In addition to conventional microstructure observation, for detailed analysis of reaction compounds in diffusion-bonded area, we performed STEM-EDS measurements and selected area electron diffraction (SAD) experiments. The TEM and STEM experiments revealed the diffusion-bonded area was composed of only one reaction layer, which was characterized by TiC precipitates in Cu-Si compound matrix. This reaction layer was in good contact with the SA-THX substrates, and it is concluded that the joint structure led to the excellent bonding strength.

Silicon Carbide Pressure Sensors for Venus Environment

We report on the evaluation of 4H-SiC piezoresistive pressure sensors in the simulated Venus environment of the NASA Glenn Extreme Environments Rig (GEER). The purpose of the evaluation was to determine the survivability of the pressure and temperature sensors and ancillary packaging components when subjected to the high pressure and aggressive chemical media that are characteristic of the Venus environment. Interest in Venus has been stimulated by the ongoing debate about Earth's planetary evolution, particularly in regards to its climate, and NASA has proposed a flagship mission to Venus to be launched in the near future. Quantifying how the Venus evo-lution ran its course will greatly aid researchers trying to model Earth's climate dynamics.
